LOST $100K OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY WITH PAYPAL..AVOID USING THEM PEEPS! #BOYCOTTPAYPAL

PLEASE PLEASE GUYS AVOID USING PAYPAL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AND LET THIS COMPANY DESTROY.

I was running a legitimate e-commerce brand on Shopify and things were goin pretty well. We were doing 7 fig a year with this brand and had 5 full time employees, so tot of 7 families were dependant on this company including me and my partner.

Time came last year when we were close to Q4 which is the best time for Ecom we got an Email from PayPal that your account is limited for 180 days and you cannot withdraw anything at all.

We were using paypal to pay for our Facebook ads and supplier mainly so we had around $100k in balance.

All our cash flow was F**** by paypal overnight and we had nothing to pay for our ads and suppliers nothing at all. Basically we were screwed. For a few days we worked to get a quick business loan to restart our marketing and pay our suppliers, which we did because we were confident we can pull this up and after 180 days once we get our funds back we can basically pay back our loan.

We called paypal and emailed a multiple times but nothing happened and they said the only thing we need to do is to wait for 180 days and paypal will release all the payments.

So we simply started business again just because we didn't want to fire employees and also to bring food on the table for our families. We slowly scaled back and the 180th day finally came in after our account was shut. my business partner logged into paypal account and he was shocked to see everything all the funds inside our account was trasfered to paypal on 179th day and there was no email nothing from PayPal, just a transfer in the name of PayPal which fucking said YOU TRANSFER TO PAYPAL like wtf is that? why would we even do that?

We lost our breath for a good few seconds, it was like an end for us our families our employees were all dependent on this business and we were in loan which was another big big stress on our minds and were waiting for paypal to release the funds to pay back loan.

Long story short we hit paypal from every angle we can continues emails, calls, live chats, Twitter fb , BBB etc but no help nothing we lost our business, we lost our business partnership , we lost our employees , we worked jobs to pay back loans 😢 still remaining......but who cares paypal is a multi billion dollar company their stock price is on the rise since, THEY ARE THE REAL ROBBERS AND SCAMMERS OF THIS ERA.

We curse PayPal, PLEASE FFS STOP SCAMMING INNOCENT BUSINESS OWNERS WHO EARN THEIR LIVING USING YOUR BS SERVICES BECAUSR THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE..

If someone can still help us out here and can get back our funds I am happy to share a percentage with them once we are sure we can get our money back.

    Thanks for reading

P.S. There is a discord group where people are regularly joining and facing the exact same issue with PayPal.

"I need ideas!" NO, I need problems to solve.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:23 AM PDT

I read a lot of posts about people asking for ideas to start businesses. So far I've learned it's not about having ideas, it's about finding problems that are worth solving. I've been trying my darndest to open my eyes and ears for problems people encounter. "I really dislike..", "It's so hard to..", yet this serves a problem for me. Either I'm rather content with life and can't seem to find any real problems or I'm not listening and looking enough.

I've tried reading books about entrepreneurship, startups, and innovation, yet they haven't clicked with me. My mindset is pretty much still the same.

So here I am, asking you te help me solve a problem (haha). What source, book, quote, lesson, video, or whatsoever helped you change your perspective and launched your path into the world of business and problem-solving?

Thank you so much in advance, answers would be very much appreciated. Who knows I might just solve your problem in the future?

I spend hours studying entrepreneurs I interview. I thought I'd share my sources so that you can learn as well.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:00 AM PST

I spent the past week studying Corey Haines. He's one of the smartest marketing guys I've ever talked to and among the rare few who talk substance. Below is a short guide on what I learned. Spoiler Alert: It's a rabbit hole of wisdom ;)

He wrote this beautiful post, when he left Baremetrics, about a trip with his friends that changed the trajectory of his life. Taking the leap is probably the scariest thing you'll do as an entrepreneur. It helps when you can go back in time and read how others did it. Daniel Vassallo also wrote this post when he left Amazon where he was making $500k a year. Their stories are inspiring because they jumped off the cliff, and are learning to fly as they fall. What's interesting is they're also documenting their crazy journey.

Corey shared The Stairstep approach to bootstrapping in one of his tweets recently. Rob Walling is behind some of the most successful companies of our time( Drift, MicroConf, TinySeed Fund). The stairstep approach is a step by step guide for anyone trying to quit their full-time job and go bootstrapping. I realized that Nathan Barry of ConvertKit followed the exact trajectory to entrepreneurship.

Over the past years, I've seen many job boards getting launched on Product Hunt. Corey's first product was a job board, Hey Marketers, which he built using no-code tools while working full time at Baremetrics as its head of growth. Here's a detailed post he wrote on how he did it.. No-code tools are here to stay, they're easy to master, and they're getting better at automating things. WordPress disrupted websites, Shopify disrupted e-commerce. Now we have an entire army of no-code tools attacking every single mundane, repeatable task online.

Rand Fishkin knows a few things about building an audience. He wrote this epic post on building a list of potential amplifiers to grow your audience. This never gets old. Timeless strategies that transcend platforms.

If you liked this, you can listen to Corey's interview here.

Acquiring Small Business, but is business too small for attorney, evaluations, etc...

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:33 AM PST

    Hello!

I have a question regarding evaluations and attorneys.

Is there a point where a business, at least in its current state, is not large enough to hire acquisition attorneys/appraisers?

I have come into an opportunity to purchase a company owned by a friend of my wife's, in an industry she works in.

They have shared about 4 years worth of information from sales reports, expenses, bank statements, Quicken P/L, etc. given these records, and knowing the owner, the overall earnings of the business are not that wild, and I am okay with that. For me it is the experience of having a workforce, running a business, and seeing if I can bring change to enhance profit potential.

But my concern is this process of outside attorneys and appraisals will be rather extravagant given the smaller scope of the business at hand. As an example, the current owner mentions she doesn't typically take home more than 60k-70k a year. Modest, and a scope that I believe My wife and I can handle and would simply serve as a typical salary for her.

    Thanks in advance!

I made an animated summary of "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, hope you find it useful...

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:00 PM PDT

    Link to video: https://youtu.be/NcQjBghtxMU

If you'd prefer to read the script instead of watching the video, here it:

    The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho's bestselling book has sold over 65 million copies and translated into more than 56 languages.

    The Premise Of The Book

The underlying principle in Paulo Coelho's book, The Alchemist, is a dedicated desire to work towards your aims."

The book tells the story of Santiago, a young shepherd boy who sets out on a personal quest to Egypt to find his "personal legend." As he ventures out on his quest for personal greatness, the journey fast becomes an adventure full of challenges and obstacles the shepherd boy must face and triumph over if he is to attain his personal legend/greatness.

"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

    Paulo Coelho

The Protagonist in the Alchemist is very relatable.

Here are the main lessons learned from reading and implementing the principles taught in the Alchemist:

Lesson 1: Pursue The Desires Of Your Heart And Soul

"And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."

    Paulo Coelho

Most of us spend our lives waiting for the right time to act. Well, the right time to act is right now. If you fail to take consistent action towards your purpose, your utmost aim, you will never achieve your desire because there is no right time; life will always get in the way. Pursuing your heart's desire with some urgency is the most significant lesson taught in Paulo Coelho's book The Alchemist.

"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

    Paulo Coelho

According to The Alchemist, when you are not pursuing your desires, following your dreams, or doing what you were put on this earth to do, the chances of fulfilling your personal legend are slim to none.

In each of us lies a seed of passion: the passion to experience certain things, to do certain things, and to live life a certain way. If you are not following your heart, if you are not listening to it and answering to its call, you are keeping yourself from living the best life possible.

Lesson 2: Accept Failure As Part Of The Process/Journey

Fear of failure is very relatable, something we have all experienced at one point or the other. Our personal legend, what we want to do or achieve with our lives, manifests in the form of a grand goal or vision. When you allow the fear of failure to take root in your spirit, it keeps you from pursuing and achieving your personal legend.

Do not let fear of failure keep you from pursuing and achieving your dreams and aims. As Coelho notes:

"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure."

    Paulo Coelho

Constantly remind yourself of where you are right now, where you want to go, and why it is important that you get there. When you do this, when you are consistently working to better your life and yourself, the universe will conspire to help you actualize and achieve your dreams:

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity."

    Paulo Coelho

Always remind yourself that everything worth having has a price. Are you willing to pay that price? Only those who are willing to pay the price, to risk it all, to act in the face of fear of failure, achieve their aims and dreams.

Always listen to your heart, to the dream it holds dear and near, and then actively dedicate your daily life to pursuing your dream. The universe will reward you immensely.

"The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times"

    Paulo Coelho

Lesson 3: Take Consistent Action; It Is Secret To All Learning

Tony Robbins is fond of saying, "knowledge is not power. It is potential power. Execution will trump knowledge any day."

If you are not taking action towards fulfilling your personal legend, you will never fulfill it no matter how much you learn or know. Action is the secret sauce to all forms of success.

"There is only one way to learn. It's through action."

    Paulo Coelho

The importance of taking consistent action towards the fulfillment of your dreams is one of the most important lessons gleaned from reading and implementing the principles taught in The Alchemist.

True to this, you can study as much as you want, and seek advice from the best the world has ever known, but if you are not taking action, if you are aiming but not pulling the trigger, yours will be a case of unexploited potential, which you do not want. You do not want to go to the grave with your potential still unfulfilled; the regret is just too painful.

    Conclusion

Discover your purpose and actively pursue it every day. That is the only way to achieve personal greatness.

Six Stages Of Business Growth Cycle

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:38 AM PST

Your business passes through six stages of growth cycle. It starts with the "Seed", i.e. when you get an idea for a new business and ends when you "liberate" yourself from the business and it becomes self-sustaining.

    1. Seed:

This is the discovery stage where you get a business idea and you explore the market and its opportunities. You experiments with the idea and test it through feedback from existing players in the market.

    2. Start-up:

At this stage, you find your first set of customers. You start understanding what works and what does not. As an entrepreneur, you are the entire value of the business at this stage, without you the business will not sustain.

    3. Small Business:

Your organization starts building at this stage. You try to attract quality people in your business. You feels the need for developing Systems and Processes growing business brings with it chaos due to its outdated processes. Most small businesses get trapped at this stage and stop growing due to the lack of Systems and Processes.

    4. Large Enterprise:

Your business grows to this level with the help of good Systems and Processes and is able to attract professional talent. You manages the business by exception and decentralize the decision-making process. Your entire focus is on growth and business' future.

    5. Corporate:

Here your business gets a public image. You drive the business through strategic planning and with the help of systems and processes. Processes are consistent across the length and breadth of your organization. Your organization invests heavily on upgrading employees, systems and processes.

    6. Liberated:

You as an entrepreneur liberate from the business when a board forms with independent professionals to run your organization. Strong governance and ethical practices implemented across your organization. The employees imbibe your philosophy and strive for continuous excellence.

At what stage of growth is your business? An how do you plan to take it to the next level of growth?

Philip Kotler’s definition of a product makes sense to me ... what do you think ?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:29 PM PST

The majority or people would put Products and services on the same level. Product (tangibles) vs services (intangible)

But Kotler has a different way of looking at it. He considers the term "Product" as a generic term. It is the umbrella that includes all tangible items (like goods and physical items) and intangible items (like service)

According to Kotler, the definition of a product is : " A product is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use or consumption. It includes physical objects, services, personalities, place, organizations and ideas."

What do you think ?? Do you prefer to use the term "product" as the umbrella ? Or to use the "product" as on the same level as the term "service" ?

From employee to bootstrapper to financial freedom

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:57 AM PST

I recently started to fulfill my lifestyle expectations. I'm now able to live wherever I want and move whenever I want, working remotely and having a flexible work schedule while running digital products that create recurring income so I don't have the complicated uncertainty of those early days as an entrepreneur.

I'm just beginning this journey, but it's already a few years since I started to walk the walk and having a retrospective look at it allows me to share a few thoughts and stories with you in case you're planning to do the same.

I went from employee to bootstrapper to achieve that financial independence, without raising a cent from venture capital. I believe the learnings I've got throughout this process have made me a more solid and resilient person.

I wanted to share a bit of my story and posted on this Medium article: https://maomorales.medium.com/from-employee-to-bootstrapper-to-financial-freedom-89b20ea20e06

Best ways to invest in local businesses?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:55 AM PST

I'm thinking about becoming a minority investor or silent partner in a few local businesses. Looking at things like bars or gyms that have been hit especially hard by COVID, because I figure they'll be going at a discount now, but have good potential to bounce back next year.

Are there any good sites people on here have used for finding businesses like this that are looking for minority investors? To be clear, I'm not looking for crowdfunding, but more to invest 5-10k each in a few businesses.

    1099 for cleaning subcontractors?

I am starting a house cleaning business and plan on subcontracting cleaners and paying them per clean on a weekly basis until I feel confortable to fully transition them into full time. I am not an LLC yet as I am not sure that this will workout but assuming the next couple of weeks looks promising I will then get one. Should I have my cleaners filling out a 1099 form even though I'm not a registered business?

Is it worth pursuing an app idea for experience even if you know it's not going to be some crazy hit?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:30 AM PST

    Hey guys!

I'm not sure if this is the right place but I'm looking for some sort of guidance. I am a university student in the UK and I love computer science. I'm currently studying it and I want a career in software development or some other cyber security consultant role.

I've made my fair share of side projects, including apps, but now I want to get out there and have people try stuff I make.

I'm looking to build an android app to release within the next month or two, I don't want to explain exactly what it is but it's basically a dropshipping utility app! A very hot topic at the moment. While I don't expect this app to go crazy and make me money or anything, I just want to try it to see what happens.

I guess my question is if I know it might fail to get traction is it worth doing it? I just want to get a feel for the process of making something that I think would provide utility to people and seeing how they react to it. I already have around 30 people who would definitely download it just to try it and i guess if they like it they would share it around.

Payment Processor to Capture Fee's Based on Transaction Amount?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:23 AM PST

I'm looking for a payment process that ultimately handle's fee capture based on transaction amount. For example - a seller lists a product for $100. We (the platform) charge a set amount for each listing based on the listing price (i.e., $50- $100 listing - seller is charged $1 to list which goes to the platform. This would be similar to the way that ebay charges sellers a % percentage to list - does anyone do this currently and can provide advice?

I’m starting to doubt myself, but I don’t want to give up.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:42 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'm currently going through one of the most depressed, unmotivated, and miserable times throughout my life.

I'm a 20 year old who's had dreams of being an entrepreneur since I was a kid, watching family members start their own businesses and be their own bosses. My whole life however, I've been told that I should just go about life in the normal way, go to university, get a degree, work a 9-5. Mostly by people who don't understand my thought processes and what I know I am capable of.

I've saved up about 40k so far, no where close to what I know I'll need, and my parents are starting to put heavy doubts into myself, constantly telling me to just stop and go back to school, which by the way I did, wasting about 30k dollars on general courses in the past 2 years.

I'm lost. I just need to write this out to vent a little bit and hopefully gain some inspiration. I feel like I'm floating through space with nothing to grab and frankly, I feel like a failure.

I've had little businesses I've started throughout my teens, detailing cars, selling cars, landscaping. But nothing that I have a drive or a passion for.

Any advice for this young soul is appreciated, harsh words, kind words. I need to hear it all.

    Thank you.

I'm currently in the beginning stages of building out an ecommerce website on shopify selling imported food items (want to start off non-parishable goods) from a specific abroad region in the US. I'm a developer but new to ecommerce specifically and wanted to gauge thoughts on anyone who is currently selling food items and how they started up. Few questions and any insight would be appreciated:

    1. Since i'm just starting out, i'd rather not go in and look to purchase directly from brands abroad and deal with importing the goods myself at this stage. This most likely would require a significant MOQ from a range of manufacturers, shipping container issues and the overall monetary risk is high considering i have 0 traction at this point. I'm thinking to test the market by purchasing from a a wholesaler that already imports themselves and deals with customs and if I indeed get traction, then look into importing to reduce product costs. Has anyone done this?

    2. In regard to storage, I've read about using a 3PL to handle warehousing and order fullfillment. Again I'm not well versed in this but if I would use a third party to handle this, would i simply need to hire an external transportation service to pickup from the wholesaler and bring to the warehouse or can a 3PL handle pickup? I guess I'm trying to get clarification on the overall process from pickup of goods to storing to shipping to customer. Any reading recommendations to learn more on this end of things?

These are some initial questions/thoughts. Thank you.

    Business Name

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:36 AM PST

Hello! I'm new here. Here is my situation. I'm opening a sticker and stationery business soon and I've picked up a name I absolutely love. I found out today on Instagram that there's someone with the same name in Australia and is also a sticker shop (the designs are not that good and copies the memes, by the way). The name is not trademarked and it's also available as a domain which I immediately bought. That's why I thought the name is free for the taking.

This might seem like a silly question but I'm new to business so I need someone to help verify if it's okay or not. Thank you!
