    The end is in sight!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:45 PM PST

I graduated from my university in May 2020 and I am over halfway done paying off my student loans. I just surpassed paying $10,000. At this rate, I will be debt free within one year after graduating college.

I've taken advantage of the 0% interest, stayed honest and committed to my budget, and threw all my extra money at the loans. Meanwhile, none of my friends have started making payments or shown any interest or concern in the matter.

I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging. I'm just proud of myself :')

    Staying motivated

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:03 PM PST

I've been putting about 25% of my income to student loans every month. I make about 100k which is great but after taxes, healthcare cost (no conditions aside from mental health), living expenses etc I take home about 4000 per month.

I started with 40k in loans and over the past 14 months I've paid down about 16500 in principle and 19000 total. I'm just having a difficult time, feeling like I'm getting nowhere. Just looking for perspectives on how to stay motivated.

    Thanks in advance!

Can personal loans be paid the same day?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 12:21 AM PST

With so many different loan products, from so many different loan providers, on the market, finding the funding that you require can be confusing. Making a loan application with a 'traditional' lender, such as a credit union or bank, will mean taking time out of your day to head to a physical location to apply in person. You would then possibly have to wait for a decision, after a long application process, and that could take several days.

Turned down public loans, now need loans.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:46 PM PST

So I turned down public loans a few months ago, now I realized that I need a loan for next semester. Is there anyway to change that or get a private loan?

Parent Plus Loan consolidate with Student's Fed Loan

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:16 PM PST

    Hello,

I took out parent plus loans under my mom's name, and both fed sub/unsub loans under my own. I am post-grad so I would need to make payments soon. I got a full time job as a nurse. Should I take out a Private student loan ( I don't have any private loans rn), to just cover my mom's parent plus (if that's allow) or take out a private loan to cover all of the loans (sub/unsub & plus)? Current loan amount is around 55k? Brand new nurse makes about 55k, but my rent is like 1700 a month so that costs a lot. Any insight is appreciated!

    Thank you!

Final check before refinance from Sofi to Earnest

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:13 AM PST

Decided to check my rates for refinancing yet again(fourth time in 3 years, went from Earnest to Laurel Road to Sofi).

    I'm currently getting with Sofi: 10 year, 4.856%, $569.18/month

    Earnest is offering: 10 year, 3.68%, $532/month

I know that around the time I left Earnest years ago, they were just bought by Navient, which encouraged me to look elsewhere. I haven't heard any horror stories since the purchase, so I'm not totally against them. This sounds like a great rate to refinance at, anything I should be aware of before I submit the final application?

I've checked Lendkey, Laurel Road, Citizens, CommonBond, Discover, First Republic, and Splash Financial

    Parent plus Loan help

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:49 PM PST

Just found out my parent has a parent plus loan they used to pay for my college but it has gone to a collection agency. I think it went a few years ago, and they have been receiving notices but have not done anything about it. How can I help them/what is the best move here? They are 67 hopefully getting close to retiring and I want to try my best to eliminate this stress whilst also not having to pay the full amount. Which I'm sure has accrued quite a bit of interest.

What should I (16f) start doing now to prepare for college?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:43 AM PST

Ok, I'll be honest. I am not completely sure if I DO want to go to college or not, but in case I choose to, I want to be prepared. I honestly dislike how expensive college here is in America, and I don't want to take out loans. Can I get some advice on how to go through college debt-free? I want to start preparing now. I'll get jobs and save up as much as possible of course, but applying for scholarships is difficult for me. I can't word things properly, nor do I have any talents. How to apply for scholarships and any other unconventional ways/methods are all appreciated!

Friend trying to get out of an abusive marriage - but is financially stuck. need advice on student loan assistance, ect.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:12 AM PST

TL;DR A friend of mine confessed that her husband is very, very abusive. But, she's financially stuck. She needs help finding assistance with her student loans, because her payments right now are huge. I know there are programs that can lower your payment, but its all very confusing, and there are so many scams out there.

More details: She has an absolute massive student loan payment, and her husband is here on a spousal visa. I'm not totally sure how this works: but apparently because of that, if she divorces him before he becomes a full citizen, this will make the divorce very messy. Also, she works for his company. So she'll be jobless and homeless. But she needs to get out ASAP.

I'd appreciate any information or advice that you can provide.

It wont let me correct my FAFSA application.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 10:47 AM PST

A few days ago, I recieved an email saying that I needed to correct my FAFSA application, but, when I tried to log in to my FAFSA application this message popped up: "FAFSA on the Web has encountered an error. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause", and it has been popping up every time I try to log in. I googled the issue and tried to do what a page from FAFSA itself said to do if that error popped up. But nothing worked, I then tried from my phone and it did actually work once, but I left the page without finishing to correct some things because I didn't have the info I needed. And so I tried logging in from my phone again but now that doesn't work either. And I googled it again, and that led me to a post on this subreddit, but none of that has worked either. Hence, why I'm asking for help if anyone knows what the problem might be and how to fix it.

    Undergraduate loans in medical school?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:20 AM PST

Hi! I'm about to enter medical school next year and I was wondering what happens to the subsidized loans (FAFSA) that I took out during my undergraduate years? Does the government still pay for the interest during medical school or am I responsible for the interest starting then?

Student loan repayment choice: IBR,PAYE, or REPAYE

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:09 AM PST

Standard Plan, REPAYE, PAYE, and IBR for student loan

So I just graduated this past year and make 90k annually now and I'm trying to figure out what would be the best payment plans for my loans.

The breakdown of my payments for each plan/month are below (for my personal 100k in student loans excluding my parent plus loans):

    Standard plan $ 1,075

Revised Pay As You Earn $ 591

Pay As You Earn $ 591

    Income-Based Repayment $ 886

I also plan on paying close to $1,000 extra to pay off the parent plus loans under one of my parent's accounts (80k).

No matter what plan I choose I will be paying as if I am on the standard plan to pay off my loans by at least year 10 if not earlier. I've seen posts where it is more efficient to do a PAYE, REPAYE, or IBR than standard since you can direct more of your payment to the higher interest loan thus decreasing your interest accrual.

I want to aggressively pay these off even if my money may be better spent accumulating in a brokerage account under a mutual fund (majority of my interest rates are below 6%) Note: I will be maxing out my traditional IRA, HSA, and 401k as well and saving $500-1000 per month. I live at home and don't have to worry about rent or food expenses currently but I do plan on moving out with my significant other in 1 or 2 years (which I may get another boost in salary but not guaranteed). We plan on getting married in 3-4 years which I know will effect REPAYE plan payments.

I'm mainly deciding between PAYE and REPAYE but I'm not sure what the main difference is between the two besides PAYE cant go over the 10 year plan and I may become ineligible if my salary increases significantly (like 140k based off studentloan.gov calculator). I also briefly saw that REPAYE may be the better option if I plan to pay faster because of some of my accrued interest being payed off.

Want to know if anyone would want to give their advice on what I should do. Thanks!

TLDR: 100k in personal student loans + 80k in parent plus loans. Make 90k annually. Which plan you suggest.

how is everyone doing with student loan forgiveness?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:35 PM PST

So apparently zero-interest thing due to covid will end this year and interest will start accruing afterwards. I'm probably going to start paying off in chunks soon as I've been saving until now ever since the no-interest thing happened, how about you guys?

Not well-versed in student loans. Why didn't I receive my full subsidized and unsubsidized loans?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 03:48 PM PST

I'm new to this sorry for the potentially dumb question but when I was a student at uni I accepted, for example, $5,000 for subsidized loans and $2,000 for unsubsidized loans to help pay off tuition/COL. But when I look online, it says I was only disbursed $4,600 out of the $5,000 that I accepted of the subsidized loans and only $850 out of the $2,000 that I accepted of the unsubsidized loans.

Is this normal or did I hit some sort of limit or did I do something wrong?

    Trying to do some research

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:50 AM PST

Hi y'all. Just got a question... I'm a recent graduate with and undergrad in Poli Sci and an MBA. I'm going to have to start repaying my loans in 4 months and I'm trying to do as much research as I can now so that I can address my loans head on as soon as they are due. I have 100k in loans, in about 13 different loans.

The loans themselves except for one are many but quite small like around 2k-5k and one for 30k (graduate plus loan). They are all federal loans and I want to learn more about consolidating, interest, etc,

Was wondering if anyone had any good book recommendations specific to student loans??

Many of the debt books that I've been reading are directed towards car loans, corridor card debts, and mortgages.

Also If anyone has any general advice here is some more info about me....

I'm lucky enough that I only have my fed student loans at the moment and will be able to live with my mom for a few months (paying minimal rent) before having to relocate for my job which will hopefully start this upcoming week. Job is currently remote bc of pandemic.

In case people want to know my repayments are going to be income based at around 1,100 a month. I'm going to try myself to make them more than that especially while I have the chance to live at homes. My salary is at 62k.
