I made a list of articles founders might find valuable Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:31 AM PST I'm in search of finding my path as an entrepreneur. Over the last few weeks, I've read many academic papers and in-depth articles that might help me with my idea. I'm working on a fintech/blockchain project and plan to create a solid ground and build an MVP before I rush and try to get an investment. Some of the resources I found useful:
I'm looking for great resources about SEO, creating a business plan, finding co-founder, no code founders guide please share in the comments if you know any great resource, if its good I'll add it to this list so the community can learn from it [link] [comments] |
2021 is going to be a HUGE year for weddings. What can a young buck do to get in on the action? Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:37 PM PST Im M22, in Kansas City Missouri. I've never been the best at cold sales buts but I've had good experience in: - culinary/food service - photography - Welding (my current profession) - a little bit of carpentry (nothing fancy) - Computer work I feel like all of these could be very lucrative as a side hustle but I'm not sure how I could enter that world. Can anybody help me with ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:22 PM PST For the longest time felt like I didn't fail at things. I was brought up with the mindset that if something is doable, it cannot be hard. A mindset which compels you to find harder and harder challenges. That all changed when Flex, the Techstars company I co-founded didn't work out. It broke me. What surprised me was that the network, "give first" and all of the opportunity that comes with it is great when you're on the up but awkward, uncomfortable and at times "crickets" on the down. Part of this I now realise is because when you're in failure mode, you're insufferable to everyone around you. You carry this huge weight on your shoulders that you put on others every time you meet like a wounded animal, limping around looking to be put down. I'm not sure if everyone has gone through this, but for me I suffered through thoughts like: I came to learn these can be called cognitive distortions, and the best way to stop them is to write them down and use reason and logic to disprove them. Everyone just tells you its okay, put in their perspective, you'll work it out - This whole experience was incredibly frustrating, how could a non founder possibly relate to the level of aspiration I had taken away from me. What is a well meaning attempt at helping often comes across as people shrugging you off. There was a limit to what my coach could do because I convinced myself he hadn't experienced it. How could he possibly understand what was left behind after this huge emotional debt bubble deflated. I sought out others who's companies had died, or who had been ousted from their own boards but it was hard to match with other failures because it was either a sufferfest of two people feeling sorry for themselves or one of you values success more than the other and you judge the others' failure. I didn't grieve, I tried to re-inflate the bubble inside me. I didn't get angry, I just wanted to get better, I just wanted to feel better without putting in the work. I turned to reading, thinking that with over a century of modern business practices surely titans have recovered from this. Reading a gazillion business biographies, literature I now know to pop science schlop, did not help. In fact it made it worse. I remember reading Lean In and it slid me into depression. How did Sheryl Sandberg career magically line up at the end? Was I on the right track? How do I get on track? Where is the track? What is the track? I would openly talk about imposter syndrome to explain why I approached work and decisions the way I did, and came to learn that:
For me, the voices in my head eventually did die off. Normalcy came about a year later when I realised I was talking about and writing about my experiences from a perspective of wisdom rather than re-hashing scar tissue. Serendipitously after this point, I was gifted the book - When Smart People Fail by another Techstars founder whose grandmother had gifted her the book after she had experienced a set back. A set back which ultimately led to the founding of her Techstars company. Where was this book when I failed? While a subjectively unnecessary read, I read it anyway. In my personal opinion, it was probably the best thing I've ever read on dealing with personal failure. I think it would have saved me months of anguish had I read it earlier, and while I truly love helping entrepreneurs and makers - my goto advice now, when someone has experienced failure and is looking for guidance is - read this book. I think Techstars should gift this to every founder that fails, whether they leave their company, are forced out or go insolvent. Between stories of failure, to understanding the core stages of grief that one must go through - there is something in the book for everyone. Key things the book taught me:
The third point is something I embraced over the year that followed. Clearly others think I have experience/advice/wisdom/ideas to share so there is value there and it made it all much less painful. If success is binary, those of us who don't make it, lose many years of our lives for nothing. This is a stance I fully reject and I thank Jen and the book for really teaching me this. In full realisation of this final point - I'm committing to my failures in public. We'll see how long I can keep it up for, but for every project that didn't hit the goal, the ideas that crash landed and the products that went unloved I'm keeping a record because these failures are not a waste of life, they are the stepping stones that when looking back in 20 years will all make sense. Show me someone without failure and I'll show you someone without learning. Thanks to everyone that listened to me moan for a year about my failures. My door is always open to listen to people who think others don't get it. I do. Reach out. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:33 PM PST Questions can make or break the sale:If you liken a sales interaction to a charter flight, and questions as the coordinates on a GPS, it's fair to say that the wrong questions can leave you in a totally remote location (far away from making the sale) and the right questions can land you right in the sweet spot (closing the deal) If you've spent any time in sales, you'd know that people, based on their individual personalities, needs, wants, desires, etc. all need to be treated differently. Questions help us do that, they give us a sneak peak into what's most important so we can tailor our approach to them accordingly. In my sales experience, there's one particular question that I've used that has helped me tremendously. I own a residential house painting company, and each time I have an estimate, and I'm working with someone I ask this seemingly elementary question: "Have you ever hired a \house painting company before?"* *Insert your service You're probably thinking... That's the question? I just read all of this, for that? Yep. Now let me show you why this question can help open the door to the sale: We will soon identify that your customer, or prospect will have had 1 of 3 experiences:
Once we identify which of the 3 experiences the customer / prospect has had, now we can tailor our approach to either steer them away from pain, or direct them to pleasure. (Did the bell ring yet?) If the answer is: "Yes, poor experience": Goal: Figure out exactly what made the experience so poor. Thought provoking sub-questions (Dig deeper):
Now that you know the answer to those questions, you can fill in the blanks with how you plan to ensure the poor experience doesn't repeat if they hire you:
If the answer is: "Yes, great experience" If you get this answer, chances are they are going to hold you to the same, or higher standard. Goal: To find out what they appreciated about the last company, so you can meet or exceed those expectations.
So, you'd then identify that this prospect has a few things that are very important:
You'd then set a new conversation about how prompt you are, and how important communication is to you. In essence, you're aligning yourself to "Speak their language" Last response: "No, I haven't" This is my favorite - it gives you an opportunity to set the expectations with a clean slate. Highlight all of your values, processes, systems and standards here. There's no comparison. Usually, by nature, human beings are less skeptical when they haven't been let down. So, don't let them down. This will set the sail in the right direction and allow you to inform the customer why you are the right choice! I did a video on this topic which can be found here. Thank you for reading! [link] [comments] |

My story of co-founding a company, divergent visions, and a amicable breakup. Posted: 07 Nov 2020 02:13 PM PST This actually happened 11 years ago now but wished I had this channel back then to talk about it, and hopefully it will provide meaningful conservation if anyone finds themselves in a similar situation. I co-founded a company with a local businessman to sell marketing and print services to oil companies during the Bakken Boom in my home state of North Dakota. The initial strategy was accept any job and deliver no matter what. 6 months in we had a breakthrough and got an order for 50k from an energy giant. This was the beginning of the schism. I began to think, I was able to secure 50k in revenue and it took me about 20 hours of my time. I spent countless hours on these "fly by night" wildcats where maybe 20% of projects turned into something billable. It'd be hey I want 500 business cards, some tshirts, and give me a quote on dozen custom specialties products.. Then they'd ghost you for three weeks, apologize ask for a revision, ghost for another three weeks, argue about billing for artwork, rinse and repeat. Since my time was limited I created starter packages with fixed templates and products from vetted vendors as well as 60% down to get started. The co-founder would go over me and I'd be back to wasting time on the fly by nights. It came down to my vision of selling services to large established companies in the oilfield and secondary companies who are benefiting (hotels, restaurants, bars, car dealerships, etc...) and not bother with the fly by nights if they can't put 60% down on a $800 minimum vs. "big or small, we'll do it all" for oilfield services. We ended our business relationship amicably and I moved onto different projects plus a return trip to college. We still have a good friendly relationship to this day and I will grab a burger and a beer with him every time I visit my parents back home. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that find a co-founder who shares a similar vision and even if they differ, they are compatible with each other. Also don't burn bridges, I've made tens of thousands of dollars afterwards doing small freelance projects for the guy. [link] [comments] |
Group for warming email accounts Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:21 PM PST Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in creating a small group to share email addresses so that we can warm our email addresses prior to cold out reach. By warming, I mean sending emails to each others accounts and then responding with a quick message to improve that deliverability score. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:14 PM PST been thinking about it all week, it gives me massive headache. seriously cannot decide. what would you pick?
or
both cost the same. what would you choose? basically, we're boiling down to: a logo only from a design firm destined to land in the history books vs full brand design with simply awesome work thank you [link] [comments] |

10 Smart Strategies To Generate More Leads For Your Business Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:47 AM PST Nearly 4.57 billion people use the internet worldwide as of July 2020, says Statista. So, generating leads online shouldn't be a challenge. However, the type of business, the industry, and customers are a few factors you need to take care of. No one would be interested in your product if it is BORING and especially if you haven't managed to reach the RIGHT TARGET AUDIENCE. So, you see, even if you offer the best-selling price of your product or service, it really won't matter. Unless you hit the right button. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:43 AM PST I have recently started my under graduation and I want to learn something extra. I'm looking up for some online courses about social media managing and marketing as this has always interested me but I'm totally confused. Which udemy or any other platforms offering this would be suitable so that I can even earn part time after doing the course as a freelancer? [link] [comments] |
How to Market an Online Store? Posted: 07 Nov 2020 09:45 AM PST Hello everyone! I'm currently a student studying for my BSBA and my BIL has just asked me to help him promote his brand! He just released a shirt that's plays off of the WAP song but in Thanksgiving fashion! I've done marketing research before for another brand, but I was never involved in the actual marketing process. He said he has already boosted his post on his Instagram, but that's about it. He also posted the shirt to all of his personal/work accounts! My main goal is finding maybe 5 Instagram influencers that would be willing to wear and post the shirt for free, and then offering other people the chance to receive a discount on the shirt in exchange for a post and a shout-out on his pages. Any other advice that you can offer me in helping him grow his small business would be appreciated! It would definitely help me jump start my career for sure! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2020 08:36 AM PST What problems are you facing daily? What are the things you wish were there to solve that problem? Would you pay for that product? . . . . These are very broad and general questions! But they certainly might help budding entrepreneurs come up with an idea or a product use case to research and build! Thank you 😌 [link] [comments] |
How do I buy a house with multiple family members Posted: 07 Nov 2020 07:25 AM PST I am looking to purchase a house with 3 other family members, including myself. I've been searching everywhere, and can't seem to find anything helpful. This will be a family home, but I want to use the profits I get from my relatives renting it from me to help launch me into investing in real estate. Simply put, my family has been pooling in money into a high yield savings account for a while, so we can get closer to meeting something like 3% down. However, what are the ramifications of getting qualified for a house loan this way? Will I not be qualified if this money is coming not from myself? I work a full-time job @ $10.50/hr and just am dying to stop this type of job model. I'm looking to open a Business, but everything seems to far away. [link] [comments] |
My dad wants to come to India and start a business. Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:23 PM PST He's 52, and is working a soul crushing 9-5 job in the middle east and is slowly going insane with all the pressure. Recently, he's stated that he wants to leave his job and come home to India and start a small business. I'm in the 3rd year of a 4 year course doing computer science. I'm 20 and have no income of my own right now. I do want him to come home like everyone else in my family, but I don't know how we would stay afloat once he's here. Right now, I've asked him to develop a good idea to base a business around, but I'm just as confused as him to think about where to go from there. Is his idea of starting a business viable? Should he just suck it up and keep working his stable job? Somewhere in between? [link] [comments] |

I made an animated summary of "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg. I hope this is useful to you. Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:01 PM PST Link to video: https://youtu.be/d366w-o8nhA I release new videos often, if you're interested in subscribing here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfbLDMh6uGOZePAfqqjVZ-g?sub_confirmation=1 If you'd prefer to read the script instead of watching the video, here it is: The Power of Habit By Charles Duhigg 'The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do.' - Charles Duhigg This book is divided into three parts. The first part is titled 'The Habits of Individuals' and contains the following chapters. The Habit Loop – How Habits Work This chapter discusses in depth the cycle all habits form, which Duhigg calls the 'habit loop.' All habits follow a certain cycle- they start with a cue, which is anything that serves as the reminder of the habit and triggers it; they then move on to the habit's routine; and end on enjoying a certain reward you seek from that habit. For example, if you smoke every time you are stressed, stress is the cue of this habit. If you smoke 3 cigarettes consecutively and listen to sad songs while smoking, this is the habit's routine. The temporary relief you experience after smoking is the reward you seek from this very habit. How to change a bad habit To break any bad habit, you need to be aware of what triggers it, the routine and the rewards it provides you. You then need to find positive substitutes of that habit and engage in them every time you experience the bad habit's trigger so you seek that reward from a positive activity and nurture its habit. So the cue will be the same, you need to change the routine and have a similar reward. So if the cue is stress, instead of smoking you could go for a walk, the reward would be the relief you feel from a walk. Keystone Habits – Which Habits Matter Most There are certain habits that matter more than others and if you implement just a few strong keystone habits they can have knock on effects in other areas of your life. 3 Keystone habits that will really change your life are reading or listening to audiobooks more, meditation and exercise. Reading or listening to audiobooks will help give you better ideas on how to tackle problems in your life, Exercise will elevate your mood and keep you fitter, meditation will help to keep you calmer and happier. It's best to focus on these simple keystone habits because these lead to the biggest changes. Arguably, the key take away from the book is that we create habits to save our time and effort because through habits, we mostly function on auto-pilot and don't have to think a lot before doing something. Our habits create our reality more than we realise so if you change your habits you really can change your life. 19 yr old looking to step up my money game Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:25 PM PST Hey guys, I'm 19 yr old from a third world country. 8 months ago, I started working online as a software developer, frankly I've dropped out chasing my job but I plan to continue my college this January. I've been earning 1500-2000$ monthly, which is pretty good considering the average salary in my country is 500$. Basically I've been overspending (800-1k$ monthly) the last couple of months, so I want to reduce my spendings & do something with my money. I believe I can save 1k$ monthly. The question is how do I use that money to generate more. Any ideas & advice is appreciated [link] [comments] |
