[Minnesota] My neighbor asked me for advice because I "work in insurance". But this is a homeowners insurance issue, not health. I know into legal advice territory too, but I thought I'd ask and see if any of the homeowners insurance people have a take on it.

About two months ago one of the kids from the neighborhood, probably 13 or 14, ran her bicycle off the road down a slope, and hit a tree in the front yard. One of her arms was obviously fractured as it was bent in a way an arm doesn't normally bend, and she was bloody, apparently from road rash from sliding through the planting bed with marble chips- she was wearing shorts and a tank top. She was crying and screaming and obviously in a great deal of pain.

My neighbor, who works out of his house like I do, heard and came out and immediately called 911 and waited for the police and ambulance to arrive, but didn't attempt to render any aid because she was obviously breathing and not bleeding uncontrollably and he thought that it would be best to let the professionals come in case there might be some sort of spinal injury. She was wearing her riding helmet and apparently her only serious injury turned out to be her arm.

My neighbor asked me to review my security camera footage, which records the street in front of my house, but not the neighbors yard. From what I can tell the girl was texting on her phone while wearing headphones and not holding onto the handlebars or looking where she was going. I did save the footage at his request.

Now my neighbor got a long, rambling letter from the parents saying it was negligent for him to plant a tree so close to the road and to have a planting bed with sharp rocks and that he should have gone to help the kid and demanding $10,000 for pain and suffering and "PSTD" and "trauma" and "needing psychological help" "being afraid to ride her bicycle" and "the cost of a new phone and bicycle" and their health insurance deductible and asking if they have homeowners insurance and what the limits are (they do, $100K liability per accident) and "you should just settle rather than having your homeowners rates go up"

Potentially relevant facts: the city owns the property 24 feet from the centerline of the street, which would include about a six foot stretch of yard. It is illegal to plant trees and large bushes in this strip, although gardens and planting beds are allowed. The neighbor thinks he planted the tree immediately on his side of the line, but didn't get a survey done so it's quite possible the tree is illegally on city property, or straddling it.

Her health insurance already sent a subrogation letter to his homeowners policy, who told them to go pound sand and they didn't pursue the matter. (Which I'd expect as a health insurance adjuster, we almost never collect from property insurance) We're assuming the parent's letter is just an extortion attempt to try and get an easy few thousand dollars but would homeowners still get involved if there were an actual lawsuit involved? Would it change things if the tree was in fact illegally planted? Or if the girl initially slipped while hitting the edge of the landscape border which is clearly on city property? I'm assuming he should not respond unless there's an actual lawsuit filed, but should he tip off his homeowner's policy about the letter?

My Cat Passed Away and I'd like to get Pet Insurance for my Other Pets.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:05 PM PST

    Hi,

My cat Danny had to be put down last week because of a multitude of issues. Kidney cancer, kidney disease, cancerous tumors and other things that I can't even pronounce, let alone spell.

She was in pain and not eating, so I had to feed her with a syringe tube. The veterinarian did offer a suite of treatments and operations, but we had already spent over $900 just to find out what's wrong and the bill was measuring in the thousands, which we just don't have.

We had to use a large chunk of the Pet Care Credit we had for the euthanasia at $410.

We now have 1 cat and 1 dog and I'd like to be better prepared for the inevitable illnesses and treatments to keep my pets as healthy, pain free, and long living as they can be.

Which is why I'd like to know about Pet Insurance, it's cost, it's usefulness, and most importantly your experience.

    Thank you!

-For the sake of the location by I live in New York.

Me and my wife are on the same auto policy and we got into an accident with one another, should we file any claims?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 07:46 PM PST

Need some guidance. I (25M) drive a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with just liability insurance. My wife (24F) drives a 2008 Honda CRV with collision insurance.

Blocks away from our home at a weird four-way intersection I hit her car as she was turning left. It was completely my fault. Of course, we laughed it off because what are the chances...

But we're unsure of what to do. The damage isn't too horrible, both cars can still drive. I hit her left side which left a considerable amount of damage. My front bumper is f*cked up but it's all still together. We have Geico, both cars and both of us are on the same policy. Please give us some guidance in dealing with this the best way possible.

    Edit: We live in Missouri

    Car accident advice

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:24 PM PST

I had a 2019 honda accord touring 2.0t. The total cost after taxes and everything was about 42k brand new but I am still making paying off a couple thousand left on it. I also have full coverage on it and it had about 18,870 miles on it before the accident.

I was involved in an accident last Friday in Northern bay area California in which I was the passenger and my boyfriend was the driver. We had just gotten an oil change, washed the car, vacuumed and were headed to target when we got to an intersection of a 4 way stop and an elderly woman who was driving a rental car failed to make a stop and hit us on the passenger side of the car. I think she was going around 40-45 in a 30 zone. Both cars were totaled and were towed. Luckily there was a police officer already near by that separated all parties involved. I low-key had a panic attack or was in shock and the paramedics suggested to take me to the ER even though i just had some pain and minor scrapes on my right arm. But now a day later, my body is sore, have some pain in my head and neck. There were witnesses who told the police that they saw her fail to make a full stop at the stop sign. A police report was made and basically rules her at fault. However, she basically lied to the police and said we were the ones that didn't stop at the stop sign and made up a story. She was claiming she was in pain and seemed to be in distress when she was talking to police. However, when police left, it was only her and my boyfriend left, my boyfriend got the chance to briefly talk to her an she seemed completely fine and unbothered by what just happened. She gave no apology, had no concerns for me or my boyfriend and still blamed us for the accident when there are witnesses. There are hopes of captured footage of the accident from a nearby store however, the police said there was no need for a video since there were witnesses. Right now I'm waiting for my insurance to call me back and the other person's insurance to call me.

Will there be consequences for her trying to frame us and lying to officers/authorities?

Does my boyfriend driving my car affect how much the insurances will cover?

Will the insurance cover the cost of the car which was 42k when though I haven't finished paying it off?

Can I get a rental car from the other insurance since my policy doesn't cover rentals?

Will my rates increase even though I was not at fault and if so, would the other person's insurance cover it?

Basically how do I make sure I get enough money to cover the cost of the car and maybe extra left over?

Thank you so much for the advice in advance! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Will I be at a total loss after being rear ended?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:19 PM PST

Last night I was rear ended on a highway. There is significant damage to my car, no physical injuries to myself. It will most likely be totaled. The other driver and I both have the same insurance so the claim is underway. I'm trying to prepare myself for maybe what is to come. This is the first brand new car and first auto loan I have ever taken out. It's a 2018 Toyota Yaris. I have full coverage insurance. I still owe just under $17,500 on the car. According to KBB, my car's trade-in value is about $10,500. I do have GAP insurance, so I know I won't have the lingering debt. But my main concern is if I will get any type of cash from the value of my car since I will need to buy a new car. :c Edit: Don't know if this is helpful, but I'm in Arizona.

Questions about getting my health and life insurance license?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:59 PM PST

Hi! I recently started my first full time job in CA, and my company is offering me a raise for when I receive my health and life insurance certification. I'm going to be taking the 52 hour pre licensing training at https://prelicensetraining.com/ and then will take the exam. I'm curious to know - how difficult is the exam, and is there anything I should know before going into this? Also, is it okay for me to be going into the pre licensing training with not a lot of knowledge on this subject, like can I expect to learn during this training? Or is it a bad idea to go into the training with not much knowledge?

Why do I have to keep car insurance even though the car no longer exists?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:13 AM PST

    State: GA Company: Farmers

My car was totaled in May 2019. The insurance company convinced me to keep the policy up to make things easier when I buy a new car. Fast-forward 18 months - my life has gone completely to hell. I was working full-time as a rideshare driver, and naturally the insurance payout wasn't enough to buy another car, let alone one that rideshare companies will accept, and I'm also out of work as a driver and simultaneously over- and under-qualified for every other job in existence. I'm driving the family beater "spare" car; my mother is the legal owner and policyholder on the insurance, I'm an authorized driver on her policy. However, I'm still paying this insurance policy on a car that doesn't exist any more, in fact I'm paying MORE than when I had the car and was doing rideshare with it. Needless to say, this is money I can't afford to waste, but the insurance agency just doesn't even return my calls and emails about it any more.

Do I have any rights here? Shouldn't the policy be void and invalid since the item being insured no longer exists?

Is it True - There are life insurance plans that you can cash out in your 60s?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 12:30 PM PST

    We live in the US

When I was doing freelance work I joined a local BNI Networking Chapter - One of the people was an insurance broker and they would always tell their pitch like this...

"If you pay into this insurance plan $60 a month until you are in your 60's you will then be able to cash out like 4x what your actual out of pocket investment was up to that point!"

Like $40,000 out-of-pocket becomes $160,000 insurance cash? - Or something to that effect 🤔

Like after you retire this account becomes an ATM

    Was this total BS?

    What were they talking about?

    Minor Accident... Need some advice.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:03 AM PST

So I just got into my first accident. Two lane street, going around 20 mph and I was trying to switch lanes and skid into the car that was in my blind spot. I looked at the mirror but just didn't fully look because I didn't think someone was so close. We pulled to the side and it seemed like both of us had no idea what we really needed to do. Nobody was remotely injured. It was literally a quick side swipe then when I noticed I hit a car I immediately corrected myself. All we did was exchange name and phone number. At the time, we didn't take pictures or call the police or anything because we both felt the damages were minor. Didn't realize how stupid that thinking was until after the fact. I told her I wanted to avoid insurance and she told me that her dad works in a body shop. So I was hoping to square this away with a quick payment. So we exchanged name and numbers and that's all. 15 mins later I get a call from her and she said that her dad believes the damages will come out to $1000. I was convinced the damage wasnt close to that amount and they were trying to take advantage. Once I heard that I knew I had to get pictures. She told me she was a block away from visiting her dad so I drove around the area, found her car, and took pictures after the fact. When I looked at it again, I definitely feel $1000 was way too much. What's the best way to handle this? Is it best just to go through insurance? She only has my name and number. She didn't take pictures or anything at the scene. Maybe she got my plate but I'm not 100% sure.

My insurance is effective sooner than I think it should be, is this going to become a problem? [TX/USA]

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:38 AM PST

Hi, I have questions about my insurance and I hope you can help!

    I am in TX, USA.

    Here are the facts:

-Recently got shifted from part time to full time (in middle of a pay period)

-Benefits are supposed to be effective 30 days from beginning of full time status

-My insurance is showing an effective date about a week prior to what I expected it to be.

-Both the company I work for and the insurance company are large companies, if that matters.

My thought is maybe they messed up my start date since it was in the middle of the pay period; however, both the effective date of my insurance and the date I expected it to become effective are in the middle of a pay period. That said, the effective date is 30 days after the beginning of the pay period from when I started fulltime. [I hope that makes sense.]

    My questions

Is this something I need to be concerned about? Would I have to pay any money back if I used it before the *expected effective date? I have an appointment on Monday that I expected to pay out of pocket for but it would be nice to have the coverage.

    Thank you in advance.

How long until my mom finds out I totaled my car?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:12 AM PST

I'm in my 20s and we share a plan together, along with one of my siblings and my stepfather. I wrecked my car today and have to tell insurance. I was completely at fault.

Once I report, how long will it be before my mom finds out??? I just need to prepare. Fuck. I'm United States btw. I'm from Michigan, as is my policy. The accident is in New York though, because I decided to go there for some reason....

    Life Insurance Policy Legitimacy/Feasibility

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:15 AM PST

Here is one part of an insurance policy. How can I determine if it is legitimate? If it is legitimate, is there a guarantee it will be enforced as long as I pay in?

    ~$50/month for $75k (the document linked below (759252-A) shows $25k. I have a nearly identical document (759252-B) showing $50k)

I question it because I haven't seen other "no medical check" life insurance policies this cheap. Not accounting for inflation, if I started to pay in at 21 years of age, I would "profit" as long as I died before age 74. At age 64, I would have paid in $26.4k, but would get a $75k payout. At 75, I would have paid in $32.4k and the payout would be $26.3k.

Why are my quotes so high?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:05 AM PST

I'm 20 years old, a couple tickets on my record, and I currently pay $230 a month through Progressive. I've looked at a couple other insurance companies, and for some reason every one of them wants hundreds of dollars more for the same coverage. For example Allstate wanted $860 a month for the exact same coverage as I'm getting now. Why is this? Am I maybe doing something wrong that an agent could catch?

    First car Crash

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:37 PM PST

Hi, so recently I got in a car crash when I was coming from school got rear-ended around 40 mph. At first, I was just in pure shock and now I'm pissed off because the driver that hit me was on his phone during rush hour traffic. So I'm wondering how much could have gotten damaged that I cant see. This is my first car crash and I'm really flustered over the whole situation. I'm getting really pissed off because the crash happened on the 5th of November I called insurance and later that week I took it to a service king to get an estimate and it's at the end of the month and I still haven't heard anything from the repair shop or insurance. Since this is my first crash, i also don't know where to go for a good repair shop a repair shop that will paint match the bumper that needs replacing and the panel gaps that formed due to being hit so hard. Will it ever go back to looking good before the crash? This whole situation has made me super depressed and feeling down.
