    Desire to become an Accountant

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:47 PM PST

I am 26 years old. I attained an undergraduate business degree that specializes in operations management and marketing about 4 years ago. I am now working a full time job within my major, however, I have begun developing interest in becoming a certified accountant. I have little to no Accounting course credits. I am unsure of what my next steps or, what to research or who to inquire with. Below are some questions I've been brainstorming:

Will I need to restart college and get another undergraduate degree in accounting?

Do you need a major in accounting to take the CPA?

Do you need a masters in accounting to take the CPA?

What are the pre requisites for taking a CPA?

4 years later.. am I able to contact the university I attended for guidance? If so, which department?

Generally speaking, what are my steps to achieving my goal of becoming an accountant and what is the timeframe from my current status?

Really appreciate your time, thank you.

Big 4 Firm vs Local Firm

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:54 PM PST

So, I have an offer from a Big 4 firm (EY) and a local firm (OUM&CO) , They have two locations, one in San Francisco, the other in San Diego,

I already signed the offer letter for EY but then again, I have the right to rescind my own offer, right? I mean, at-will-employment goes both ways.

I'm in a dilemma of which one to pick because a Big 4 and a Local Firm are very different firms to work in. (If you work/ed at EY and/or OUM&CO0, your insight will be a huge bonus)

I don't know what exactly I should look for both within firms and myself to determine which firm would be the better fit for me?

(If you work/ed at EY and/or OUM&COO, your advice and insight will be a huge bonus)

I was told by my accountancy tutor that I would quit by time I was 40...

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:05 AM PST

So back when I was studying 15 years ago, my tutor told me that I would be like a gentleman she knew and that one day, when I was 40, I would just quit and leave the profession.

She was wrong, I lasted until I was 34!! I quit last week and that's me done *dusts hands off*.

Now because many of you are paid handsomely...fancy giving a jobless ex-accountant a hand-out so that I don't end up having to rent my mouth and bum out?? haha (joking, not joking)

Is there anyone who is a CPA and a CFP?Curious about a career path

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:40 PM PST

I'm currently getting my CPA, and am planning on getting another degree in financial planning. Honestly, the thought of being in Corp accounting long term sounds depressing to me, but I am super passionate about personal finance. So I was just wondering if this is an actual career path, maybe like starting my own business to be a financial advisor and personal tax accountant? I figured with a CPA and CFP, I can do people's taxes and help them plan for their future, the whole package.

Does it look bad if I can’t finish my bank recs on time because I’m waiting for people to get back to me?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:40 PM PST

This month my boss made us do bank recs in 3 days. Normally we get 5/6 days. I have the most to do out of all accountants at the firm. I'll finish the actual work but I don't think the people will get back to me in time to turn it in, but I'll have all the actual work done in that time...

Interested in pursuing accounting, but scared of having no life

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:01 PM PST

I'm going to begin with a personal anecdote that created this fear for me. For some reason that wouldn't make sense to most people, I receive notifications for most of the purchases my uncle makes on one of his credit cards. Today, I received a notification of him purchasing from an escort service. My uncle is in 60s, is retired, and divorced. He's one of my relatives who focused on his career all his life. My other relative (my cousin) was a director at PWC before switching to another company. As you might have guessed, he focused on his career a lot. I wouldn't say he is lifeless. He's very charming, extraverted, and the life of the party. He parties almost every night. But he has no time for family.

I'm also interested in pursuing accounting and getting to the big 4. But I'm very scared I'll end up like them: Divorced, no life, no family, and no one to look forward to seeing when coming back home. And I sure as hell would never want to purchase from an escort service.

I do want a successful career in something I like such as accounting, but I also want to have time for family.

Entry-level job prospects with a graduate certificate (Canada)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:25 PM PST

Hi all, I recently graduated with a useless bachelors degree and I am seriously thinking of pursuing accounting after having a lot of trouble trying to find a job that is not retail. I do plan to take the CPA in the future. I don't have the savings to pursue another degree so I found a college near my place that will give me the preparatory requirements to take the PEP and receive a Professional Accounting Graduate Certificate. It's 3 semesters long and includes a 4 month co-op term.

Assuming I'm able to get the co-op, what do you say are my chances of getting a decent paying (higher than minimum wage) accounting-related job after finishing with this certificate? I'd like to be working while studying for the CPA, so I can have a good amount of savings even after paying off my student loans. Also, I'd really appreciate any advice from others who have had a similar experience (pursuing accounting with an unrelated bachelors). Thanks in advance for your help!

I hate how punishing taking leave is [Vent]

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:44 AM PST

Took leave for two weeks while clearly communicating to everyone involved from the managers, seniors and staff that I will be on leave for two weeks.

Assigned urgent sections that needed to done asap to the staff who were still on the field.

Came back to finding that not only are all the sections which are assigned incomplete due to the staff not even touching the sections I assigned to despite the Senior In Charge reminding everyone to get it done urgently.

And of course, another file came back with urgent EQCR comments to be cleared by this week which I would need to work on at night to get it done since I am in another clients now.

    Just so done.

Edit: Did meet up with the staffs to get a progress update. One staff is on leave, so will catch the staff when they get back. Another promised to get it done this week. Another who is one step away from PIP claimed to be unable to find the documents despite it being in the email, will get them to solve my work regardless. Another one is claiming to be working from home but is MIA.

The fact that 4 staff and no one can get their work done despite the senior-in-charge (not me) reminding them for two weeks is infuriating.

Edit 2: I wish I could complain to the manager in charge and partner in charge but they are so hands off that they couldn't be bothered about what is happening.

Edit 3: Proof that despite doing everything right, nothing goes right in Public accounting.

Edit 4: I'm in a senior role. Got permission and was asked to by the SIC to allocate the work to the staff.
