It’s been fun (no it hasn’t), homies. I’m saying goodbye to accounting!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 05:42 PM PST

I got my bachelors in accounting, worked in corporate accounting for a year (after interning there for a year and a half during school) at a large F100. Learned a lot, upskilled myself outside of work, and now I've accepted a position as a Business Intelligence Analyst in a Data and Analytics department for another large company. Slight pay raise, but the benefit is moreso in the pivot.

Good luck to all of you and remember, if you don't like what you're doing, just take the fucking leap already. I'll stick around the sub I'm sure, but now just for kicks!

    Cheers!

Edit: So to all of you asking how I changed roles. I did have a minor in MIS, but over the course of this year I got better with SQL, Power BI, and Tableau. I did some personal projects and talked about them during the interview process. I'd also been participating in some automation teams at work since I've been there. They were looking for someone with my experience level in SAP, so it was a good match.

    Quitting the Big Four

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:04 AM PST

Working until midnight every day for the last 2-3 months.

Whilst all my reviews have been good/excellent, they've given me a shitty 8% payrise for promotion (which I won't even start to receive until March 2021).

No bonus - even though my department has had their most successful year ever.

I don't have another job lined up, but would rather be unemployed than work in this corporate sweatshop. Handing in my 3 months notice at the end of next week and awaaay I go.

What drove you to be an Accountant?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:47 AM PST

I'm in my second year with Penn State World Campus and I've just started to realize that I don't have a definite answer as to why I am taking an accounting degree. I like working with numbers and the idea of keeping tabs on expenses on a large, complex scale. Besides from the great pay, low unemployment rate, and versatility of the job... what drove you then to be where you are now and what are the high points you've experienced that you'd want someone like myself to know of?

    Forensic Accounting?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:06 PM PST

Hi there! I'm currently in undergrad for Accounting (about junior level). I've been interesting in pursuing the Forensics field within Accounting since before I even began my undergrad. However, I feel like there isn't a lot of good information about there on what the field really is or how to get into it. There are simple articles about it, but not a whole lot of primary sources I can access to understand it a bit more. I know the ideal timeline of finishing undergrad, Master's, CPA, a few years of experience, and then CFE.

Does anyone have any advice on how I might get more information on Forensic Accounting? How should I go about this?

Edit: my ultimate goal is working with the government / FBI

What are some examples of stupid questions at work and what are examples of good questions?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 02:05 PM PST

I usually ask basic questions on purpose to get a deeper perspective from an experienced employee or professional. These are usually questions that I know the answers to, but I really wanted to see how different individuals respond to them.

I do this time to time in career fairs, as I would go to different associates or even managers/senior managers/partners and ask them the question to see the variety of responses I get.

    Recurring PA dream (nightmare)

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 06:48 PM PST

Does anyone ever have a recurring dream about all the bad times experienced in public? I'm 11 years removed from being laid off (recession??) But every now and then I experience a dream where I'm working for my old firm with an endless tax season. The partners are constantly belittling me (reality I know) and I always feel like I'm a moron or just don't belong there.

Yes these are all valid experiences I'm sure most of you had but if you're in private now, do you ever have dreams about the horrors you experienced in public accounting. Tell me baby. Punish me.

    Post public practice problem

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 07:53 AM PST

For those of you who escaped from public practice, what do you with your spare time?

Been through 5 busy seasons, it was always wake up, work, gym, work, sleep, repeat. I finally made the move and stepped into a controller position which they force me to leave the office at 3:30pm (I start early). After having a solid gym session and dinner, I find myself at 7pm not knowing what to do with my time... sometimes I feel obligated to fire up my laptop and work. Sounds super stupid but have any of you experienced this post public practice syndrome? Have any personal stories of what you ended up doing with your new found freedom?

Going I to audit and assurance in mid tier company

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 08:31 PM PST

Hi guys, I recently got the opportunity to interview for Mazar for audit and assurance. I'm happy for this opportunity, but I am unsure if this will lead to good career prospect. My concern is that its a smaller company in Australia and I'm afraid I won't develop the skills required. Any tips or advice??

    Bachelors in Accounting

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 09:37 PM PST

I've seen a lot of pages for accountants on Facebook and on here, and everyone seems to hate their job. This is scary because I'm about to get a degree in this field. Do y'all really work 70+ hours a week? How do y'all have families and work so much? I hope I didn't waste my time and money getting this degree

Where do you see the accounting profession WFH environment going in the future?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 03:08 PM PST

Very difficult question to answer because we hear many people in PA or industry are WFH currently or have recently came back to the office. Is WFH here to stay or does management really hate this idea.... such a complicated topic.

Just wanted to hear your prediction of where you see the accounting profession WFH environment in the future?

Does amortization of a sub reduce investment income of the parent company?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:35 PM PST

    Hi,

Let's say the parent bought 70% of the company for 70 dollars and the book value equity of the sub was 110 and the difference is attributable to a patent with 10 years of remaining life. When the parent calculate the investment income at the year end, does amortization decrease their investment income or the investment itself?

How Much Can I Ask for With a Promotion?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 10:21 PM PST

I am working at this larger company for a year and a half as a Revenue Assurance Analyst. I make 47k living in Colorado. They are telling me based off my performance in Q4 I will most likely get a promotion to senior revenue assurance analyst. I already feel like I am getting underpaid as I can barley afford rent and student loans. How much can I reasonably ask for a raise? Id like to make 65k-70k a year. If I dont get the amount I want should I start looking for a new job?

I just decided to start my own LLC rather than continue job hunting. Where can I learn how to pay taxes as a sole proprietor now?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 04:05 PM PST

Long story short lost my job due to corona. Then I had a severe hand injury which turned into CRPS a very nasty chronic pain condition leaving me with tons of medical bills and everyday medication now. (yay 2020) Life was totally turned upsidedown in the span of 4 months just like a lot of unfortunate people out there. Had been job hunting for 5 months with no luck just now starting to get over the depression. Recently decided to go solo and become a sole proprietor LLC independent contractor working out of my house now rather than continue the search in vane.

What tutorial videos should I watch to prep me for tax changes? My tax returns have always been very simple. No dependents no investments no savings really no meaningful deductions whatsoever year after year. Now I need to know how much and how often to pay in taxes each month and how to reliably calculate that where to send it. How to properly pay myself out of the companies profits. What changes I need to make to my bank accounts. How to handle my own medical insurance expenses. What things I can and cannot write off (i'll be travelling to remote locations everyday but office will be my house and car) etc etc Basically I know nothing about LLCs and taxes and I need to learn starting today. Any tips greatly appreciated even if it's just a good link pointing me in the direction to learn on my own or a nice long video!

Why do I find French easier to study than accounting

    Posted: 08 Nov 2020 12:42 PM PST

I'm just trying to get a different perspective on this.

When I study accounting, I take breaks every 45 mins or so. Sometimes I take the entire weekend off from studying accounting.

When I study French, I tend to study longer. I never even think about taking the weekend off and I never go on breaks as often as I do with accounting.

I used to have fun with French and Accounting but that fun isn't there anymore. Still, I last longer studying, learning, and understanding French than I do studying, learning, and understanding Accounting.
