I handed in my notice this week!!!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:38 PM PST

I just needed to share this with you guys. It's been a wild ride over the past 3+ years and I've come to realise just how much I hate audit. I started having almost-anxiety just thinking about the audits I was supposed to be leading next year, knowing full well how shit they will no doubt be. My office has been growing a lot over the past few years but isn't managing to retain seniors, instead they keep bringing in brand new associates who have no idea what they are doing and need shitloads of training (with barely any seniors to train them). They have truly treated us like crap this year (in a number of ways that I won't go into), and I had enough.

I changed my LinkedIn profile to 'Open for work' and started getting approached by lots of different recruiters. I was really selective in who I replied to and ended up applying for only one industry job which I was REALLY interested in, put my all into the application and interviews and got it. I'm so happy you guys and just had to share it!! Public accounting isn't for everyone, and it definitely isn't worth sacrificing your own health and wellbeing for. The firms always find a way through busy season so put yourself first.

A few more weeks and then I'm finally free! Onwards and upwards to work in industry.

CFE2020 - Do people care about their feedback if they pass the CFE?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:07 PM PST

    Hi,

I passed the recent CFE, and I am genuinely curious about how well I performed. It got me thinking whether there are others like me who also wonder how close (or far) they were from failing (or missing the 'curve'). My guess is that most are happy that they see the word 'Pass' and never blink twice.

I on the other hand am an oddball and I have been sitting here just wondering how many RCs I scored on Finance lol, or how I managed to clear FR (after thinking I bombed it 1 hour after writing the day 2).

I guess what I am asking, is if there is a large % of people genuinely curious about their feedback and if there is a way to find out how you did w/o purchasing the expensive PAR report (which I probably wouldn't get even if I didn't pass). All I can think of is wait until May 2021, when CPA release the performance report for this CFE and then try and deduce how you performed vs what was in the solution. But by then, I will have long forgotten how I did on the CFE (I barely remembered how I did the weekend after writing it!).

I guess this maybe brings me onto another topic, of whether CPA Canada should provide us with a little more feedback in those pdf files. I know this takes away from their PAR report cash grab, but I still feel they can provide us with more then the word "Pass" lol. Like, give us how many Cs it took to clear FR, and how many you scored.

And I know many of you are thinking that this guy is thinking about such an irrelevant thing while others are depressed about not even passing, I do apologize to those people, I completely get that point of view. I am an oddball like I said, but I was wondering if anyone else thought about this?

[CAN] How badly am I getting paid as a new manager in assurance

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 05:18 PM PST

Making 71.5K. Got promoted this year, got my CPA. Leading a lot of data analytics and transformation projects internally.

Just found out my friends who got promoted in traditional audit/tax are making 80-90K. How badly did I get screwed over again?

What's a decent Christmas gift to bring to a company lunch?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:43 PM PST

I recently got my first accounting job, and this company has a tradition where everyone buys a gift for $25 or less. I didn't get the full rules of the exchange, but I guess all the gifts are anonymous, and then when your name is called you pick one. There might also be one chance to exchange once you open it? Anyways, even though it's anonymous, I don't want to be that one person who bring a lame gift that no one is going to want to keep.

What's something you have seen if you've had these gift exchanges?

(I come from a family who doesn't really do gifts, and my previous job didn't do anything special, so I really have like no idea what people gift or give their coworkers.)

For those of you 30+ do you like working in accounting and finance?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:49 PM PST

I got my CPA in 2015 and have been working in Finance for the last 10 years or so. I chose this career because I thought it was stable and provided a solid income. What I learned is that I find this work kind of draining and repetitive. A lot of people at the management level are also kind of aggressive and manipulative. There are also a ton of CPAs now in Ontario so the field is too saturated. Lots of tight deadlines and anxious moments.

What are your thoughts? Do you like this line of work? What do you like/dislike?

    Government accounting (Canada)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:03 PM PST

For those of you in government accounting in Canada, how did you get in? Is it competitive?

Do government jobs ask for your academic transcript?(gpa is okay at 3.2 but I have a class with a 15% on my record so I hope they don't ask for it)

Would it be a good approach to work in industry and then apply to government? If I were to do that would they not ask for a transcript?

What are salaries like? Sorry for all the questions I'm stressing about my future in accounting.

What part of the cpa exam do you recommend doing first?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:36 PM PST

I plan on starting the cpa exam while finishing up my undergrad. I'll be taking 12 credits (only one of them is an accounting class - corporate tax) and working part time (10 hours a week). I'm more of a computational person than conceptual (concepts of auditing was my least favorite and toughest class for me since it was 90% conceptual).

    Thank you in advance!

    The future for CPAs

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:03 AM PST

I know this is a topic that's brought up a lot. I have non-accounting friends that'll say audit is a dying profession because of automation, but it seems to me like automation will simply be a tool for auditors to use and upskill in. The whole 75% of CPAs currently being eligible to retire + the AICPA report showing fewer people sitting for/passing the CPA exam + fewer people in the pipeline in school (not many people find accounting interesting compared to compsci) seems like the perfect storm for the profession but really good for young CPAs. Is it fair to say this is a particularly good time to get into the profession? Would this trend lead a reasonable person to believe promotions will come quicker in public because of retirement and lack of a talent pool?

I've heard the average time to making partner in B4 has increased over the years, which would suggest this may not be entirely true, or at least there may be other larger factors at play.

Can someone tell me why I can’t/shouldn’t do this

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 08:12 PM PST

I work in B2B consulting. Would I be able to start a company to Bill my consulting fees C2C and used the proceeds to pay myself a modest salary. With the pre tax money left over I buy assets such as stocks, real estate and avoid paying taxes on that money until I sell those assets and distribute to myself?

Need advice/info. for comparing accounting programs.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 04:26 PM PST

I'm a senior in HS and was wondering which school's undergraduate accounting program would be best, I'm not sure if I'll attend same school for getting MAcc since that's over 4 years away but it's likely.

USF or FSU; Already got into USF and confident I'll get into FSU, UF seems to be a reach with their SAT requirements.

Thanks to all who took time to read this.

    Sports Accounting

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:27 AM PST

I'm a student at George Mason University in Virginia and am wondering if there anyone here who works in Sports Accounting? I have a project where I have to interview someone in the sports industry. So as someone who is interested in accounting I decided a sports accountant would be the most interesting person to interview. If you can help out let me know!

Failed CFE Day 1 - DHC case. Felt okay about it when I wrote it and have no idea where I messed up except the stupid operational issue. What should I do next?

If you have any resources that I should look into for the re-write, please list your recommendations (with price if possible please).

    CFE 2020 REsult

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 11:53 AM PST

Congratulations to everyone who passed CFE yesterday. Just saw this link which says 6371 writers made it this time. The pass rate was around 76-77% last two years. Is this still same? This number 6371 seems like low (maybe less number of writers this year).
