What should I waste my bonus on?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 08:25 PM PST

Disclaimer: I'm four strong IPAs deep in celebration. PE finance team back office if that makes a difference

Being the good wage slave I am, I checked my work email today to make sure there wasn't any work flow that popped up unexpectedly over the holiday weekend, and was greeted by the usual holiday email from the CEO with the standard "grateful for everyone's hard wok etc etc" BS, but then saw that they're going to slap an extra $5k on top of everyone's annual bonus this year.

Now, here's the thing. I budgeted for $5k less bonus than I'm going to get, my budget workbook straight up does not account for this. Fellow accountants with a compulsion to have a solid financial plan, I have a windfall I did not plan for, and I'm leaning towards splurging.

After throwing wads of hundreds at the requisite amount of black tar heroin and babes clamoring for the hot meat that is my Certified ass, what should I waste my money on?

    Got laid off last week

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 05:46 PM PST

I was working at this public accounting firm for four months. And this place was not a good fit. There was no learning curve, there was barely any work for me to do unless I was out on audits which wasn't very often. It was taking me a little longer to do tax training and because of that and having nothing to do, I wasn't generating enough billable hours.

Last Friday, two of the directors called me in and they said "We don't feel that this is the best fit for you." They didn't say "You're fired" or "We have to let you go" and they explained they really enjoyed getting to know me and work with me and that there was no wrongdoing and to not look at this as a failure as public accounting thing is hard and not for everyone, but they didn't have enough work at my skill set to fulfill a 40 hour work week.

I was granted a handsome severance check and an unemployment package but I feel that this place never did right by me, it was a complete waste of my time and I took a leap of faith to leave the bank I had been working at to come to what I thought was my dream job, turned out it wasn't going to amount to anything.

I'm left thinking that the only thing I can trust myself doing is banking and bookkeeping

I'm at a crossroads with my life and my relationship with accounting has taken a turn. It's been a week and this layoff/let go is all I've been rehashing in my head.

I don't know how I can go forward with this field.

    I need advice.

I should also note that one of the partners reached out about another opportunity.

[CAN] [CFE 2020] Finally Passed- to those who didn't make it, please read

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:36 AM PST

I promised myself last night that if I passed the CFE I will make a motivational post on this sub and try anything I can to contribute to help those of you struggling in this journey.

I am using a new reddit account cause I don't want all this associated to me and I know some people are mean to use it against me...

Anyway.. I finally did it!!! I passed CFE this year! This was my 4th attempt (2019 didn't count). I passed Day 1 on first attempt but every successive attempt for Day 2/3 I either failed on Level 4 (only one component), Level 1 (Decile 1), or Depth in Role.

Mind you despite writing one of the toughest roles for CFE, I managed to pass role each time except once (which honestly I really don't understand how).

Anyway, the point of this post is to you who is feeling extremely demotivated and dejected by not making it this year. No matter if this was your first attempt or second or third. You can do this. Are you to blame for failing? I personally don't think so. I personally do believe the methodology of marking is really ridiculous and you could have just missed one AO and you are screwed. But again, that is my opinion. I was on the verge of being deregistered since this was my last and final attempt. I went through a lot of embarrassment among work collegues and friends and often felt extremely low knowing I keep on failing while countless people pass. It is normal. You will feel it too. It will get the better of you. Let it for a while. But then, pick yourself up. You will hate re-doing those cases, you will hate taking time off, you will hate the study sessions. I went through all of that 4 freaking times. But you will make it as long as you don't give up.

While this is not my real reddit, I will monitor this for a while to answer any of your guys questions. The biggest one I know many would be wondering what did I do differently this time? Well, not a whole lot. I re-did cases. I did take Prep and Densmore during these 4 years. But there is nothing drastically different I did this year. I was literally on the verge of burn-out and loathed each time I opened a case. I think the only thing I really did all in this process was not give up. I said, well there is an attempt, I will try again. Why give up myself? Let them deregister me worst case but until then I will keep trying.

Side note, I am not dumb accountant. I work in industry in finance in a really top fortune 500 company. I always get high performance reviews, (knock on wood) getting multiple job offers have never been a problem for me.. BUT, I just couldn't crack the CFE. It annoyed me.. but I finally did it!! And I knocked it out of the park this time around actually- I'll just say that :)

I am happy to answer any of your guys questions, and wish you all luck in your next attempt. And to those who passed. Congrats! But in our happiness today, lets not forget about those who are struggling and help and support them. Kindness goes a long way.. don't be harsh!

    Thanks!!

Things you hate in seniors as staffs in public?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 07:37 AM PST

I hated when they handled me a workload at 4:50PM and I simply don't give tasks to staff after 4PM as a principle. I don't mind working until late but saying "hey man it's 5PM and you gotta do this, it might take you three hours if you are fast" is just plain disrespectful.

    Failed CFE D1 Four Times

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 08:12 PM PST

Today makes four time I saw the word 'FAIL' when I opened CFE D1 results. I don't know how I really feel since I think that I am not in a normal state. There are many unanswered questions at this point. Are the CFE exams normal exams? If I did not possess the skills of an expected CPA why did I pass all prerequisites course unblemished one after the other.

[CAN] CFE - Failed 2020 CFE Thread

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 10:08 AM PST

Hey everyone, I was not successful on my 2019 attempt at the CFE. I wrote again this year and was successful. I wanted to say that your results DO NOT DEFINE YOU and you are still smart to have made it this far! The day you find out you didn't pass really blows, but life goes on and it really does get easier to handle. My advice for you is to not be hard on yourself and to not give up on your CPA. Remember that failing is only defined by not trying again. I specifically say that "I didn't pass last year" instead of "I failed last year" because of this. Feel free to reach out if you just want to vent or want to know the process I took after. Celebrate today anyways, you wrote a grueling exam and waited months for results, that is a feat in and of itself.

Photos of Old Time Inventory Counting

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 06:04 PM PST

Hi there, does anyone have any photos of old-style inventory counting using tape recorders and reel-to-reel recorders, that then utilized typing pools to transcribe the results? Thanks.

What are some signs I’m gonna be fired?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 03:13 PM PST

I'm in industry. I don't have the best relationship with my boss. I'm in property management, I got my list of properties increased and have made some dumb mistakes as I've adjusted to the new workload. I heard someone is gonna start in January, in the cubicle in front of my boss' office. That's where they put some new accounting hires. I also heard they are gonna be an "internal hire". They are also hiring a new HR position, but they sent her welcome email today, so it wouldn't make any sense for it to be her. January is also a very busy month with 1099 and close.

[CAN] [CFE 2020] Requesting thoughts and feedback on the CFE process

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 02:42 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

This is a new account I'm making specifically for this subreddit. Overall I'd like to hear some thoughts and feedback on the most recent CFE 2020 process for those who wrote it this year. Things you felt were helpful throughout the CPA Capstone modules, things that were not helpful, and what you believe helped you succeed.

For those of you that were unsuccessful, please take the time to digest that, and come back next year fully ready to destroy the exam. It is not over and not the end of the world!

Overall what I've been gathering from the comments here is that whether it's CPA or other preparatory courses, candidates are getting a whole ton of theory thrown at them and just not enough actionable feedback on what they are doing and writing in their modules, which is a little disheartening since the entire exam is about case-writing. Being on the Honour Roll in the past and having experienced marking for these institutions before, I know first-hand what it feels like to not be getting the support that you are needing. Although tons of the people I helped personally succeeded this year, I've been wanting to talk to some of you guys personally on my own as I feel like there's just a lot of stuff out there that is not working for you guys.

Anyways, looking for some valuable feedback and comments on how you guys felt through the whole process, and what you thought could have been more helpful (and if you are one of those that were unsuccessful this year, please feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about it).

    Thanks for your time guys.

[CAN] CFE Results - Failed Level 3 Assurance - Passed Everything Else

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 01:14 PM PST

Like some of the other people, I did not make it. I passed Day 1 and all of the other levels except for Level 3 - Assurance. During mock CFE cases, I had always received positive rankings for my role. Do I have a possibility of appealing the decision? Any advice would be appreciated!

(CAN)failed cfe for the second time very dejected

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 08:37 AM PST

I failed last year because my computer wasn't working and I was very sick.

All three days this year and last year.

Last year for day 2/3 I got all levels besides level 2.

This year for day 2/3 I got all levels besides level 1 at decile 2. How is that possible? I am I thinking of appealing. I never failed any of the PEP exams.

I feel so dejected and feel like leaving the program. One year writing with insane computer issues and the second year during a global pandemic. My mental health is at an end.

Also if anyone knows any good markers let me know.

[CAN] looking for career feedback from Accountants in Industry who didnt pursue Public Accounting

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 10:10 PM PST

I don't want to do tax and audit as neither is truly interesting. Out of the 2, I would do audit if i had to but not tax.

I am looking for feedback from accountants who chose not to pursue public accounting by taking different electives in the modules other than audit/tax which is required for PA.

I want to see what type of careers you ended up in etc.

Have only done 1 PERT since starting program and just passed CFE. What’s going to happen?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 09:31 PM PST

Soooo I've done 1 of the 4. Should I do 3 in a row 1 for each 6 month period or should I just do one that encompasses the 3 that I should have done. Obviously I'll be getting hit with additional months for each one missed. Has anyone had this. This year has been a write off. My mental health has not been well. I'm surprised I made it through with a pass or even to the cfe.

    [CAN] CFE pass compensation

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 09:08 PM PST

Congrats to everyone who got their successful results today! And to those who didn't, you'll get it next time (this year's been an absolute shit show so it's only up from here)

For those who have passed this year/in past years, do you know if any of the big 4 firms give any sort of cash reward or other reward for passing the CFE?

Please help. I’m creating a program in python for accounting that needs to display 5 options to the user.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 09:04 PM PST

Depreciation is off limits but would have options such as straight-line, double-declining, etc.

I was looking into overhead allocation but this seems so complicated as the user would need 5 options to select from.

Any other ideas for an accounting concept that would have 5 options for a user to initially select from? The teacher recommended bank recs but I can't think of 5 options for that. Thank you for your help!
