    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - Oct 27, 2020

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

AMD announces deal to buy Xilinx at 35B all stock

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 04:02 AM PDT

(Reuters) - Semiconductor designer Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) on Tuesday said it has agreed buy Xilinx Inc in a $35 billion all-stock deal that will intensify its battle with Intel Corp in the data center chip market.

Big news. Expect Xilinx shares to jump to 35B valuation, and probably a drop for AMD in the short term.

I've told you about NIO before, and I'm telling you again.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 07:52 AM PDT

Here we go again! I've posted about NIO before Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/stocks/comments/hrqn7k/nio_solo_tsla/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Still lots of room to grow and here's why.

Shanghai's newly announced restricted traffic policy. Starting next monday, Shanghai (chinas second largest city) is restricting all traffic on major roads to shanghai license plate only. This means ppl who now have non-shanghai license plate need to get a Shanghai license plate ASAP. But it isn't that simple for non-EV cars who need to enter a lottery to get a license plate. EV vehicles on the other hand AUTOMATICALLY get a Shanghainese license plate. This policy in effect is a strong push for EV vehicles and to solve traffic issues in Shanghai. For those who don't know much about Shanghai.. Shanghai has a population of 26.32 million within 2,450 square miles. New York has 8.4 million living in 302 square miles.

Could someone explain to me how Zoom is worth $150 BILLION as a company?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. $150 billion for fucking video conferencing in 2020? Trading at over 600x earnings? What massive market are they going to break into that they haven't, with an inferior product to MS Teams? It's just insane. This stock was stupidly overvalued back when it was only $200 a share and it's more than doubled since then, unbelievable. I want to load up on puts on this garbage but then I'll just get burned by the fact that the market might not get any smarter by the time they expire.

Here is a Market Recap for today Tuesday, October 27, 2020. Please enjoy!

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:09 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Tuesday, October 27, 2020

Stocks traded choppily after yesterday's selloff, with the indices losing an average of 5% from their October highs. Market participants are closely monitoring the rising number of coronavirus cases in the US and Europe and uncertainty surrounding stimulus and the presidential election a mere week away.

In the US, over the weekend, the US registered coronavirus cases hit a record high with more than 81,000 new cases, according to data gathered from worldometers.info. Yesterday, the US registered 70,000 new cases. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert said the US is still in the "first wave" of the pandemic, given that cases never stabilized to more than a "manageable level." He explained that while the Northeast has been able to reduce its outbreak, the national baseline never fell to a more manageable number like 10,000 cases per day.

With a worrying surge of cases across Europe, governments have begun imposing a new round of restrictions. Today, the Czech Republic joined France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom in enforcing a strict nighttime curfew and placing new restrictions in businesses such as gyms and restaurants.

Yesterday, Speaker Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin met for what feels like the hundredth time to discuss the passage of additional stimulus. Pelosi's spokesperson Drew Hamill said of the meeting, "The Speaker remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached before the election," adding that "progress depends on Leader Mitch McConnell." Today, Senators left Washington for a break ahead of the election. With the election a mere week away and Senators no longer in Washington, chances to pass a bill are extremely thin.

Next Tuesday, November 3rd are the US presidential elections between Joe Biden (D) and President Trump (R). The election is set to be extremely contentious and will have enormous effect on the market for years to come.

Xilinx prospects going forward. Buying Xilinx vs. AMD shares.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:25 AM PDT

Do y'all think Xilinx will go up down or remain flat at this point? I am interesting in buying AMD. But assuming this deal closes, it seems like a better value to buy Xlininx shares before they are converted to AMD shares. It costs less and gets you the AMD shares for a better valuation it seems. Currently Xilinx shares are ~$123. They are worth 1.7 amd shares if the deal closes. 123/1.7 = ~72.40 per amd share which is better than the current amd share price of ~$78.

So, the question becomes, do we think Xilinx will go up down or remain flat? I might just DCA into it. Also does anyone know how likely it is for deals like this to close or fall apart? Lastly, is there a good estimate of when/how soon the deal is supposed to close?

Hyllion - Investment or day trade opportunity?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 10:39 AM PDT

I've been holding some Hyllion stock for a while now and so have been researching it.

Jim Cramer had announced the best time to buy this stock would be at 20, it's hit there yesterday and is hovering above it today! I believe this is due to a mix of the current US market tanking downward, the fact that he made this announcement, investors relating this to Nikola's fake videos, multiple articles trying to push shorting this stock and no big news catalyst from Hyllion.

I now (think) I see a decent opportunity. Hyllion have started hiring, multiple new career opportunities are available on thier website:

    https://www.hyliion.com/careers/

Unlike Nikola, Workhorse, Spartan and other SPACs, Hyllion actually have a working product and are working on orders now:

    https://twitter.com/TruckNewsMag/status/1318282048445030401?s=19

And have also just joined forces with America Natural Gas:

    https://twitter.com/ANG_NATURALGAS/status/1318909375403130880?s=19

I feel that leaving this any longer is potentially missing out on hefty gains. Thoughts?

Apologies for the lack of links, happy to provide more to clarify each pont if this gets a discussion going.

Cyberpunk 2077 release on Nov 19, 2020. CD Projekt ($OTGLY)

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 08:05 AM PDT

Update: Game release was 21 days delayed just 1 hour after I posted this.

I don't usually post here but this was to juicy not to share.

CD Projekt's ($OTGLY) biggest game to date is being released on Nov 19th. This is not just any release. This is the biggest RPG game of the decade. 8-10 years in making, it is not just slightly better than other games; it redefines the category. This thing is something everyone will be playing for years to come. Think of it as someone giving you a poke 3 weeks before the original Grand Theft Auto was released. This is the first in franchise.

Huge moat: Cost of production is in $120 Million to $200 million range which puts it in the same league as Grand theft auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA V has made 6 billion to date. Red Dead Redemption 2 made over $725 million in revenue in three days, and over 17 million copies shipped in total in two weeks. They have a staff of 500 working on this. It took 8-10 years to make this. No one else is gonna be able to compete for a long time.

Top dog within class: There are many different game classes. This is gonna sit at the top of RPG class with anyone thinking about RPG games buying this.

Buzz: I don't play video games but even I noticed the buzz. Any trailer, teaser, review that gets posted immediately gets several hundred views within days. r/gaming is losing its mind waiting for the release. This post got 134,000 upvotes and is the top post of the week: https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/jezwed/its_been_8_years_my_friends/

Huge nerd following: Cyberpunk is a genre of fantasy that includes Blade Runner, Matrix trilogy, Terminator, Robocop, ... After dungeon and dragons and magic the gathering, cyberpunk role playing games have huge following. This is your chance to invest in nerds and fringe.

Wall Street hasn't woken up to this because the company is Polish. But recently their ADR has been trading OTC without any analyst taking notice. This is your opportunity.

Uncorrelated to the rest of the market. When everything else goes down this thing doesn't react. That's a massive advantage giving you uncorrelated gains.

The game has Drugs, Nudity/Sex, Violence, Politically incorrect concepts, shooting, dystopia, and future technology. You can even customize your penis in the game. I am not kidding. You really can customize your penis in the game.

    Lots of Celebs:

    • Keanu Reeves - Johnny Silverhand.
    • Michael-Leon Wooley - Dexter "Dex" DeShawn.
    • Grimes - Lizzy Wizzy.
    • Samuel Barnett - Delamain A.I.
    • Cherami Leigh

Positions: You can only get shares. No options available for North Americans. Also traded in France, and of course Poland.

I just want to know peoples thoughts on INTC. I can't understand why it's selling this cheap for. This seems like a good price point to add it. I think it will be a good long term play because it is not going to go away any time soon.

Morning Market Synopsis - Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 07:30 AM PDT

    US equities mostly lower: Dow (0.47%), S&P 500 (0.28%), Nasdaq +0.07%, Russell 2000 (0.08%)

    • US equities mostly lower in Tuesday morning trading. Comes after stocks faced some pressure to start the week with S&P on Monday suffering its biggest pullback in over a month. Growth beating value. Tech and consumer discretionary among the outperformers. Energy, industrials, and financials trailing. Treasuries firmer across the curve. Dollar weaker vs yen and euro. Gold up 0.1%. WTI crude up 0.5%, but off best levels, after falling more than 3% in prior session.
    • Nothing particularly incremental surrounding some of the higher-profile themes. Press continues to focus on record average number of new coronavirus cases in the US, along with increase in hospitalizations. Earnings beat rates strong but bar has moved higher in aggregate. Stimulus deal looks increasingly unlikely before the election given longstanding stumbling blocks. Biden remains the front runner with the election just a week away but there is still a path for Trump to pull off another 2016 surprise. Market would seemingly be fine with either scenario but contested election a risk.
    • Busy earnings day. Just over a third of the S&P 500 has reported Q3 results. Beat rates remain very elevated but down a bit from Q2. Takeaways mixed and seem to be leaning more company specific with some of the higher-profile themes well understood. Recent strategist commentary has focused on how beats are not resonating with the market like they normally do, a function of a high bar and a bigger focus on issues such as the coronavirus, election and stimulus. M&A and strategic announcements fairly well received.

    Notable Gainers:

    • +24.7% HOG-US (Harley-Davidson): Big Q3 revenue and EPS beat; shipments ahead and all segments beat expectations; lower provisions and tax rate helped; raised restructuring savings target and provided more detail on its market strategy and product portfolio reduction plans.
    • +17.8% EXAS-US (EXACT Sciences): Q3 EPS decline bigger than expected, but revenue beat, EBITDA posted surprise gain, GM ahead; to acquire Thrive Earlier Detection in $2.15B cash and stock deal, Base Genomics for $410M in cash; analysts positive on Thrive deal and price paid compared to ILMN-US GRAIL acquisition.
    • +9.1% XLNX-US (Xilinx): To be acquired by AMD-US in $35B in all-stock deal; $143 a share price a ~27% premium to 8-Oct close, before first report companies were near a deal; expected to close by end of 2021.
    • +9.1% FFIV-US (F5 Networks): Fiscal Q4 revenue and EPS better; Dec Q guidance also ahead; Street positive on increased subscription contribution to software growth, muted coronavirus impact, initial guidance for FY21, leverage to 5G opportunity, and valuation; more cautious commentary revolved around structural pressures on core hardware business.
    • +8.8% SSTK-US (Shutterstock): Big Q3 earnings beat with revenue ahead of consensus; highlighted strong subscriber growth and progress of margin initiatives; noted improvement in revenue per customer and revenue per download.
    • +3.9% BGS-US (B&G Foods): Acquiring Crisco brand from SJM-US for ~$550M in cash with deal to close in Q4; company expects acquisition to be immediately accretive to EPS and FCF; sees unit benefiting from increased Covid-related demand.
    • +2.7% AIG-US (AIG): Announced plans to separate its Life & Retirement business and focus on its P&C General Insurance business; however, no details on separation path while Reuters said it could take a couple of years; also announced a number of executive changes; Peter Zaffino, the current President and Global COO, will replace current CEO Brian Duperreault, effective 1-Mar.
    • +2.5% WAT-US (Waters): Q3 organic growth, revenue and EPS beat; GM light; company highlighted a rebound in most markets and geographies; pharma and industrial the bright spots; Academic still soft but did show significant improvement; recurring revenues and instrument revenues both rebounded; Street waiting to hear more on strategy under new CEO.
    • +2.0% CRM-US (Salesforce.com): CEO Marc Benioff downplayed concerns about the read-throughs for his company and the broader software space from yesterday's guidance cut from SAP-US ; said SAP's troubles are "unique to them," noting their CEO transition is just not proceeding smoothly and customers are saying that.

    Notable Decliners:

    • -12.1% CHGG-US (Chegg): Q3 earnings, revenue, subscriptions ahead with guidance raised; analysts noted high expectations as stock benefited from stay at home trend this year, gross margin guide missed; however subscriber growth and ARPU were strong due to international expansion, product adoption, and better monetization.
    • -5.7% LLY-US (Eli Lilly): NIH halted study of bamlanivimab in combination with GILD-US 's remdesivir on hospitalized Covid patients after finding no benefit; studies on earlier-stage patients will continue; Q3 earnings and revenue missed amid lower realized prices.
    • -5.6% DXCM-US (Dexcom): Preannounced Q3 revenues above consensus; however analysts underwhelmed by magnitude of beat vs past history and elevated expectations; COO/EVP Rick Doubleday announced his retirement.
    • -5.3% ROP-US (Roper Technologies): Q3 EPS and EBITDA better on largely in-line revenue performance; raised FY EPS guidance; however, Q3 organic growth declined a larger-than-expected 3%, both software segments missed, overall segment EBIT only in line (vs better performance at peers), Q4 EPS guidance below the Street, software revenue guidance reduced.
    • -5.3% PFG-US (Principal Financial): Q3 operating EPS missed in noisy report; NII ahead of consensus but fee income weaker; provision and expenses higher than consensus; analysts flagged challenges in both individual life and specialty benefits.
    • -4.1% CNC-US (Centene): Q3 earnings, revenue ahead with guidance raised though adjusted HBR missed; analysts noted earnings beat due to one-time favorable items including taxes, charity, ACA risk corridor receivable (which also flattered HBR); however enrollment grew faster than expected and SG&A surprised lower.
    • -3.9% SWK-US (Stanley Black & Decker): Q3 EPS and segment EBIT beat with help from cost control; however, revenue light and T&S growth slower than expected; company flagged hit from promotional shift into October from September; expectations elevated with the stock a beneficiary of the at-home theme.
    • -3.6% AMD-US (Advanced Micro): To acquire XLNX-US in a $35B all-stock deal, or ~27% higher than 8-Oct close before first report of potential deal; Q3 EPS, operating income revenue beat; GM in line; raised FY20 revenue growth ahead of Street.
    • -3.2% CAT-US (Caterpillar): Q3 revenue ahead with earnings near consensus after considering boost from tax; analysts noted weaker dealer sales led by Energy and Other segments mostly due to softness in Europe, earnings outlook appeared in line to slightly below consensus; however, pricing and margins were better and dealer inventory destocking well along.
    • -1.4% MMM-US (3M): Q3 earnings and revenue beat; organic growth shy of consensus with sales weaker in Transportation/Electronics; provided no guidance and sees persistent weakness in certain end markets; analysts generally positive but noted decelerating core growth.
    • -1.4% TWLO-US (Twilio): Q3 EPS and revenue beat; GM a bit light, ending active customers slightly below estimates; guided Q4 EPS and operating income below Street, but revenue ahead; analysts cautious on Q4 guide, though noted elevated expectations into print.

I understand setting a stop-limit sell order but not the purpose of a stop-limit buy order

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 11:57 AM PDT

I know that a stop-limit sell order can be used to help prevent possible major losses if you believe the stock could drop suddenly. It acts as a bit of a safety net, which, yes isn't 100% failsafe, but is better than suffering infinite losses. What I don't understand is stop-limit buy orders, what is their purpose? Why would you want to buy at a higher point than the current price? Is it basically the inverse of stop-limit sell orders where now you want to buy at a certain price because you think the stock will keep going up so you set that order to buy before it becomes too high? Please let me know if I have this correct or not, thanks! :)

3M has a huge beat on earnings and the stock is down 1.5 percent?..

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 05:58 AM PDT

Here's how the manufacturing giant's results fared comparted with Wall Street estimates:

EPS: $2.43 per share vs. Refinitiv estimate of $2.26 per share

Revenue: $8.35 billion vs. $8.32 billion expected

The company's stock fell 1.5% in the pre-market after the results were released. I don´t understand this stock market anymore. Good companies like 3M are being punished on earnings and revenue beats and unprofitable companies like Snapchat shoot up 33 percent on an EPS of 1 cent....

Strategy: Invest a lot in one and take profit with higher % return, or invest a lot in one and take profit with lower % return but more frequently?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:56 PM PDT

My current stocks strategy involves BIG buy ins and holding for a while, maybe swing trading?

    For example:

Strategy 1: Buy $50,000 of STOCK and wait for it to return something higher than 20-30%. Withdraw original investment and leave profits.

Strategy 2: Buy $50,000 of STOCK and wait for it to return 10-15%. Withdraw original investment and leave profits.

All profits are left in stock forever. All i would do is move on the next stock and wait for it to return a %, withdraw the original invested amount and leave profit. Do this again and again and again.

Would it be better to have a lot with little or to have a bigger investment with less stocks and waiting out till the stock pays out more.

So for example 50 stocks with $1000 in them

    or 5 stocks with $10,000?

Shopify partners with TikTok to link ads & E-commerce

Good news for Shopify as announced today a partnership between Shopify and Tiktok has been made official.

It allows Shopify to have their users make and sell ads to their products on tiktok. This is great for just coming onto the holiday season. This gives more power to the third person seller.

Do you think this will help Shopify's stock?

(SE) Sea Ltd. - crazily overvalued?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:30 PM PDT

Looking at SE numbers following a nice little ~10% run up from 155 to 172 over the past month...

    Revenue - 3B

    Market cap - 84B

    Price/sales - 28.16

    Price/book - 98.40

    Debt - 2.32 B

    Debt / Equity - 259.6

I have been in SE for only about 5 months. I am a buy and hold investor, but these numbers make me so nervous. Is it wrong to adjust my strategy and take some profit early in the face of what I deem to be a completely unjustifiable valuation?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:42 PM PDT

So I did some quick research and found some of Slack's patents on justia. (link below)

    https://patents.justia.com/assignee/slack-technologies-inc

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like they were recently approved (Sept 8, 2020) of a patent for their channels that they filed back in 2017.

What's stopping Slack from sueing Microsoft for the use of channels. Or Discord as well, for copying their ui/channels.

It really looks like Microsoft has been copying Slack after they refused to buy them out.

I think I am cursed, what are some tips for trading?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 10:23 AM PDT

I bought an $81 call expiring next week and right after I f***ing enter, I just watched AMD go from 80.50 when it broke VWAP just to have it drop all the way to 78 with like 40 red candles in a row. It happens every single time and I'm so pissed and frustrated because it happened to me yesterday with ZM. Stochastics and all indicators say it is oversold but it just keeps going lower until I sell, then it will make a rally back up. I know a lot of people can relate but I think I'm blinded by emotions right now. Need help with risk management :(

    Verizon to purchase Bluegrass Cellular

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:19 PM PDT

I just received a message from Bluegrass about an upcoming buyout / merger / they don't specify exactly.

    https://www.bluegrasscellular.com/important-letter-to-our-customers.html

I'm surprised they've stayed independent this long.

Here in rural south-central Kentucky, Bluegrass Cellular is the only mobile phone plan worth a damn. I pay $35/month for my pre-pay plan and I hope that I can continue the same with Vz.

Position: I have 3 shares of Vz that I will continue to hold :)

Why are people convinced oil stocks are done?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I am new to the energy sector and have been living in a coma through it.

Is there smth I am missing out here? Oil is still necessary for production and though most production has ceased or been heavily reduced I doubt it will go extinct anytime soon.

Not to mention many oil and energy companies have invested and even offer solar and wind energy, so the idea of renewables taking over seems hype, no?

Taking advantage of the SAP price drop.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 05:49 AM PDT

    Hi all,

are you considering taking advantage of the SAP -20% plunge from yesterday?

Before dropping to 90€, one stock was 120€. Today it jumped back to 100€ (apparently people taking advantage). I am still hesitating.

Do you see this as a „discount" or are you going to rather stay away?

The reason for the drop, as far as I understood, is the less than expected profitability in the cloud business area of SAP. Which could - theoretically - recover on the long run and jump back to 120€ or more.

But I am not familiar with their business model. This is why I prefer a more experienced opinion here, before buying/not buying.

    SCHD Allocation

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 10:48 AM PDT

I posted this on the ETF sub but wanted to see what you guys think on here before I pull the trigger.

    Currently i'm holding 3 ETFs: 60% VTI, 30% SCHD, 10% ARKK

I'm 34 and this is for a long term retirement investment for my brokerage account. My roth IRA is strictly target date funds.

I'm wondering if i'm holding too much in SCHD. I'm not chasing dividends but am very interested in the dividend growth companies and might use some of it as passive income 15 years from now. I'm using 'dividend growth" as a quality metric and have read good things about SCHD, including it having dividend growth, high yield, and overall quality stocks.

However, many have suggested i'm just shooting myself in the foot as it being a "tax drag" and will most likely being seeing less in total return, so best to reallocate all of it in VTI. What are your guys thoughts?
