Small business are marginalized in the United States

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:34 PM PDT

You can't get approved for a commercial space unless you have two years of tax returns showing profitability.

You can't get a bank loan for your business unless it's already been profitable ($100,000+) for a few years.

Maybe it's just my state (CA), but the system for businesses here is so warped. People who already have tons of money can get any loans they want. Any commercial space they want.

But the new, budding businesses who need the loans the most can't get approved. They can't get the commercial space they need to scale and grow. A commercial space and a loan are the very things you need to be profitable, but in order to get those things you need to already be making money.

What a god damn joke. The rich get richer. The poor stay poorer. It's no wonder that wealth inequality in this country is so bad. This country doesn't care about small businesses. The banks and the government don't support us. They support large corporations and special interest groups.

This country has become a corporatocracy.

    Hostile Takeover (Partnership)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:22 AM PDT

I have a media company that I've been running for 8 years with a partner. We've been 50/50 partners but within the last few years my partner hasn't really been holding up his end of the responsibilities and I've been really spreading myself thin trying to keep everything together. We've been able to build a pretty huge following and we generate 70-80K a year on average.

I've had conversations with my partner about scaling and renegotiating our operating agreement which he was open to because we need more helping hands. Since that convo, I've connected with 3 other guys who are way more qualified (from a schooling perspective) than my partner and me, and they're looking to become managing partners with the brand - they are also my friends.

The LLC that I've created with my original partner has dissolved within the last year. I haven't talked to him in months and the workload has been unfair, 85/15 with me doing the 85% of the work. The 3 guys want to cut out my original partner and they offered to pay me a salary of $50K and they'd each take 20% equity in the company while giving me 30%.

Within the last month, I've been negotiating with these 3 guys and I feel like they've been begirding their way into the business without me fully being on board. They formed a new LLC under the assumption that I was on board with their offer. They've been buying things for the company that I haven't approved and today I told them I wasn't interested because I didn't feel comfortable moving forward.

They ended up guilt-tripping me for "leading them on" and even threatened to sue for what they've contributed up until this point. Just wondering does this sound like a hostile takeover? What are your thoughts?

PS: I think it's important to add that these 3 guys are very well off and I'm not. This media company is all I have and I've dedicated my life to it these past 8 years. I'm also not super business savvy if you can't already tell haha

So guys let's talk mental illness in starting a business.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:13 PM PDT

So what do you guys do to combat things like anxiety/depression, stress, burn out and lack of motivation(sometimes because of depression)? I'm getting a bit burnt out from my side hustle psychic business and it's like I put a lot of pressure on myself and my ablities. I feel somewhat inadequate. But I still like the job and my fulfilment.

How to find a competent digital marketing agency? Seems the industry is chock-full of scammers.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 04:25 PM PDT

Hi All. I'm the owner of a service-based business. We currently serve our regional area but I want to branch out to a few select cities in the US.

I've been searching for months now for a digital marketing agency that can create and manage our SEM.

But it seems that almost every agency pulls the same shit: They will gladly charge you a hefty monthly fee but their proposals, road maps, and detailed deliverables seem very vague.

The average proposal looks something like this:

    • Manage Google Ads monthly
    • Create content monthly
    • Create landing pages
    • Do SEO

    Cost: $5K/month

I tried out a firm that offered to just create a new campaign for me (I know Google Ads fairly well already) on a project basis to see if we would be good partners to work together. They forgot to apply our negative keyword list to the new campaign resulting in a ton of irrelevant searches. Ooops!

If anyone knows of a top-notch digital marketing firm or can offer me any other advice, please do. Thank you.

Started buying and selling pre-owned camera gear to a fair bit of a success, feeling I could make it a small business in the side of my regular job. When do I need to start declaring income and everything if I buy on Gumtree/Marketplace and typically sold on eBay?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:18 PM PDT

For reference, I'm in NSW, Australia for people giving advice I'm just not sure how to set it all up, basically I want a eBay style store that I auction everything from and I'm buying gear as low cost as I can from Gumtree/Facebook Marketplace

Adding DBA to Corporation - IRS requirements?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:49 AM PDT

    Hi,

We have a tiny, micro business and recently added a DBA to our company. The DBA will not be replacing the business name but an adjunct and has all been appropriately filed with our state (we're US based).

My question is, I've seen info on informing the IRS about a DBA but in the context of a name change not an add on. I know we keep our current EIN or it's not a DBA, it would be a new corporation or something similar. But I don't know if the IRS can add the name to our EIN without replacing it or if it even matters as long as we have all the paperwork. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

(PS I've search extensively but as I mentioned above all the info is about changing one's name with IRS rather than adding one. I don't want to lose our corporate name with IRS.)

Beginning to expand outside of freelance side work to focusing full time on my photography business

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 01:45 AM PDT

Right now, I'm currently in the works of investing in the equipment to get my business off of the ground through versatility and flexibility.

I currently focus on automotive photography along with graduation/portrait shoots.

I will now be branching into the meat and potatoes of it by expanding into real estate/commercial photography, videography and drone work.

I have a large list of already established clients/customers who have used my services before that have also committed to using my newly rendered services.

I currently take payments via PayPal/Venmo similar services.

I don't have an LLC and currently freelance/under the table and operate in Florida.

    Thanks!

I need some help with the business I'm starting.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 10:04 PM PDT

I recently started a shoe-customizing business, I got all the supplies and everything but the only problem is that I'm not that good at painting shoes. So, I talked to this person and she told me that she could do it for me. We decided that I'm going to be the one that will pay for the expenses, like the shoes, supplies, website maintenance, and everything and she's going to be the one painting the shoes and getting paid for each pair painted.

The problem is that I don't know what's a fair way to share the profits, and in what percentages. Or if I should pay her a fixed amount for each shoe she customizes. Can you give me some advice on how I should properly run this small business I started and what's the best way to split profits keeping in mind that the risk is all taken by me and that I'm going to be the one working on the business most of the time?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:18 PM PDT

It's been 2 years and I just cancelled it. I haven't paid any taxes on it. I have not received any documents or letters/notifications since started it in 2018. I did not use the LLC at all. Do I owe taxes? What happens if I don't pay? Thanks for any input.

Looking to start a tutoring business, but not sure where to begin

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 09:14 PM PDT

I'm in my final year of University, and have experience tutoring within a company, but want to also start looking for my own clients (my hourly rate is extremely low with this company compared to what they charge parents). I had high grades in high school and have very high university grades (a near perfect GPA). My problem is that I'm not too sure how to acquire clients. Currently, I don't have any personal contacts/connections that I could use to start acquiring clients. I guess I'm trying to decide whether starting my own tutoring service is something I should pursue, and where/how I should advertise. My "budget" is low ($100-200), but I would be willing to spend more as time goes on if I actually am successful at getting clients.

I've thought about printing out flyers and putting them up inside schools near me - do students actually look for stuff like this at school or would I be wasting my time (I know that I personally would have never noticed if flyers were posted when I was in high school). I've been considering buying a website domain (like $20) and making a website. Does online advertising (through Facebook/Google etc.) work or would I be wasting my money with this stuff?

tldr: what's the best way to acquire clients if I want to start a tutoring service

    cheap labor

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 08:03 AM PDT

Hi guys. I am from Ukraine, and my salary is now $ 400 per month. And I thought, if there is such a cheap labor, maybe you can produce some goods and send them abroad? I understand that China produces whatever the heart desires. But for example, farm workers receive $ 15 per day. I doubt it's the same in America. And that a kilogram of apples costs $ 0.50. Do you have any suggestions or want to cooperate? I will be very happy to answer

    What should I do?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 05:07 PM PDT

Hey. I am a teenage entrepreneur and recently I started a web design business. I have gotten 3 clients so far but I am not quite sure how to move forward. I haven't had much luck emailing local businesses and have exhausted any Craigslist gig in the United States that fits my skill set. I would like to find other businesses or people that can refer people or existing clients to me but I'm not sure where or how to do this. I would be willing to give them a decent portion of each sale(10%) but I don't know how to go about this. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. My business site is here if you would like to see my provided services. chasebonfiglio.com
