Paid off one of my 5 remaining loans!!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:59 AM PDT

All of my loans are (thankfully) covered under no interest accrual until the end of the year. The one I paid off in particular was one of two that was at 6.5%. My car will be paid off next month so I plan on using that extra money toward my loans monthly. I just can't wait to get these out of my life. $10,648 left.

    What are my options?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:46 PM PDT

Hello! Last spring, I applied to the uni I wanted to go to and got accepted but I deferred transferring, from the community college I am attending now, until winter quarter. I filled out my FAFSA last year and only qualified for $7,500 in federal student loans for this current academic year that will be split up between this winter and spring quarter ($3750 each quarter). The rough estimate of what it will cost for me to attend, for this quarter alone, will be just under $7000 for tuition, ~$2000 in Misc. fees, and ~$1500 for off-campus uni housing, totaling about 10-11k, give or take. I did not qualify for any scholarships that I was immediately considered for through the university. At this current time, I am not sure of what my options are. All I know is that, due to the state I live in (WA), I should go through Washboard.org to look for scholarships in my state but other than that, I don't know what my options are. From what I understand however, is that my only option (apart from if I get any scholarships) is to take out private student loans. Is that my only option since I didn't qualify for any other federal student loans or financial aid from my uni? Any advice would help greatly, thank you!

Can’t consolidate, personal loan the way to go?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:55 AM PDT

I have about 33k of private loans through Sallie Mae.

I have about 34k of federal loans with Mohela.

I am in an income base plan with my Mohela loans.

I pay 1,000 a month for all of my loans.

My interest rates with Sallie Mae are insane. I'm debating on getting a personal loan to have one large loan rather than having several different loans. What are the pros and cons of doing that? I'm not able to consolidate my private loans for some reason and I don't make enough money to refinance. Any help would be appreciated.

Let me know what other questions you may have and I can answer to the best of my knowledge. Thank you!

Income Based Repayment (PAYE) question about temporary income change - employer paid moving costs and sign on bonus

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:50 PM PDT

I'm currently a few years into the IBR (PAYE) for PSLF.

This year I started a new job which required moving and sign on bonuses which in total reflects ~$12-15,000. These will be reflected into my taxable income on my tax forms, however, will not be a typical amount of money I get for salary.

My question is based around the recertification for income annually. If I use my tax returns it will reflect the higher income and result in higher payments. However, it looks like if I use paystubs or a letter from my employer they will use the gross income (per the government website) instead of the adjusted gross - which will again be higher than expected as pre-tax deductions can add up quickly to reducing AGI on tax forms (401k, FSA, HSA, etc).

Is there a better way to go about this?

Can I get help understanding this?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 12:49 PM PDT

Just wanted to clarify if this means I don't have to pay until later on. I'm struggling financially during covid, so I can't make payments atm.

    MOHELA's Response:

    Thank you for contacting MOHELA,

Your loans are active on the Revised Pay As You Earn (REPAYE) plan with a payment in the amount of $0.00. Due to the Coronavirus emergency, your renewal date deadline has been extended to 09/27/2021.

Does the loan amount on credit karma include interest as well or just the loan amount without interest?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:42 PM PDT

I recently realised that credit karma shows you the loans you ve borrowed but I just want to know if the amount includes interest or just flat out what you borrowed from private and federal.

Private loan refinancing. So you always lose time by renewing the term?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:26 PM PDT

I'm about ready to refinance my loans again and I'm not really understanding some of my math.

If I refinance every year or two and get a better rate but end up extending the loan term so that I'm always staying at 15 years... Aren't I going to be losing money in the long run?

Community Property State - Do Prenups affect Income-Based Repayment?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 03:17 PM PDT

My partner and I live in a community property state. She has ~$280K of student loan debt all incurred before marriage. I have $0. Typically, in community property states both incomes are taken into account.

If we have a prenup that says her loans are always separate and her responsibility will the loan services still take into account my income for the income-based repayment options? I know the loan servicers use tax information so will they care to look at an additional document?

    What are the options here?

    Thanks.

Can I Get Loans for a Online Certificate/Continuing Education?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 03:06 PM PDT

Hi guys. I'm currently trying to acquire some new skills in order to break into a new field (and potentially become able to apply to some grad school programs) and I'm looking into using some online "bootcamps"/"certificates" to do so. The only catch is that the average cost of these programs (about $3,600-5,000) is way outside of my budget at the moment. Is it possible to get loans for these kinds of programs? And is that even smart to do? Like I said, I'm trying to branch off from my current field into a more specialized one and need some very specific subfield and I've discovered quite a few holes in my skill set that I need to fill. I was hoping to use one of these programs as a bridge into the field without having to commit to a whole different degree.... but now I'm starting to question that a bit.

    New to student loans

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT

Im brand new to this whole loan thing. My parents didn't go to college and so they have no clue how this works. I know that federal loans are ideal subsidized then unsubsidized then the parent plus then private. I've gone through the federal loans and accepted those but I still need more. How do I go about finding private loans and what's the process for making sure it's school channeled? Which ones are best? Thank in advance -a very helpless student with limited financial knowledge

Idk how to refinance these and I feel like all companies are trying to rip me off - help!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:10 PM PDT

Hi hi! I just graduated 2 years ago and I have 6 figures of private loans that I need to refinance. I talked to my bank and they have rates that are lower and I also reached out to other companies to try and help and I applied with earnest.

I really don't dont know what the best move is. I'm living at home and could be paying off more than I would if I lived in my apartment but since I'm saving from rent .. should I pay more or idk what the best move is?

Lowest rate? What's apr? What's the best move with a 6 figure loan on about 4 private loans.

Thanks for any advice I'm very lost

    Student loan question

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 01:36 PM PDT

My father is planning to relocate near a campus which I'm planning to attend. He will be paying rent for this house. I'm wondering if I can live with him and pay rent by utilizing student loans - will I get student loans for housing if I live with my parent - and if my parent requires me to pay rent?

Need support for postgraduate course, urgent!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 01:17 PM PDT

I've started my postgraduate course this year in the UK, and was misinformed on how the payment plans work. Initially being confused, I rang up Student finance to be explained on how it works. The woman I spoke to said "You are meant to pay with your loan, but you don't have to" with no additonal information, so I took that as that it's pretty much similar to undergraduates, and that it is encouraged to pay and not essential.

I'm assuming because of covid I did not recieve an email of my invoice until this month, finding out that I should have already paid for the first two units, and now that I have no spare money, I am more than likely going to be cut off from the course. I feel like this was unfair, and now I am worried because the loan was going to cover my rent and living for the rest of the year, and I really want to complete the course I am on, especially considering I have already completed some of the work.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any support, charities or funding other than the day to day funding that I can access and apply for? The university said due to a backlog of work because of covid, I should of been cut off from the course by now and probably have within a week to figure something out. I am literally trying everything in my power to do everything I possibly can to fix this and be able to do complete this course.

I really do not want to leave the course and be forced to quit. I can find a part time job, next payment put aside some of the loan, but really I need to find help with paying the first term. I'm really hoping someone can help me in some way as soon as possible, I would rather not starve and be forced out of my accommodation.

How do student loans work? HELP

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:41 AM PDT

Hi! Quick background: I have a bachelors in communications. After being in the field for a few years I've realized finally what it is I want to do with my life; I would need to go back to college to pursue a psychology degree. My questions are the following: can I use student loans to pay for personal expenses while I'm in school? (Car, phone, bills, etc?) my other question is does the amount of money or approval for a loan depend on what degree you're pursuing (bachelors, masters, PhD) ? I need all the info I can get! thanks in advance!

    Navient hasn't processed payment?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:51 AM PDT

    Hello!

It's exactly what it says in the title. On Tuesday I made a payment on my federal loans thru Navient. In my experience it typically takes till the end of the next business day to post and then it updates that evening. It's now Thursday morning and the charge from Navient is still pending in my bank account. Not only that, but I don't even see a pending/processing payment on their website at all which is unusual, as that usually shows up shortly after I make the payment.

Not that I'm super desperate to give Navient my money but it is annoying to see it pending for this long. Is there some reason it might be delayed?

Paid off my student loan and disputed negative remarks but do I just have to wait 7 years?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:12 AM PDT

I consolidated several small loans into one and paid the whole thing off earlier this year. A couple of years ago I had a health crisis and missed payments. When I got better I got caught up and disputed the negative remarks. They never came off and they still list balances I've paid now. Do I just have to wait the 7 years till they drop off? Anyone had this experience with Navient?
