    DriveSafe StateFarm Program Questions?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:23 PM PDT

My sister got an unlucky speeding ticket, and AllState jacked up our household rates high enough to make us switch to StateFarm; my dad took a deal to use the DriveSafe tracking device for every insured driver in the household to save a couple thousand. I'm insured by my parents.

My dad says they've straight up reimbursed us up front and that this is a program we will temporarily keep.

A week in I'm already incredibly stressed out about all the percentages and rating systems; I'm incredibly terrified about whether the smallest things are leading to an eventual hike in my insurance. I wanna ask any experienced users at here with this device what the rates are like with your respective percentage ratings and all. I'm only 19 and I'm not too educated about car insurance.

According to the app, My driving average is 80% and I honestly don't know if that's good or not. It seems like the fucking device instantly dings you for being above speed for a split second and unfairly tracks acceleration and braking.

I'm from New Jersey where other drivers may constantly brake poorly, falsely turn left, or literally break a red light and I use my strong brakes well. Every few weeks or so you'll be in situation where someone will make an error you will have to brake or maneuver quickly to stay safe. But if I'm braking to spare myself in the name of safety, the app records it as "a dangerous behavior on my part".

The speed limits oscillate constantly on some of our Jersey highways, where 55's can instantly drop to the 40's at some point. Obviously no one instantly drops their speed and deceleration is gradual, but DriveSafe is flagging me at every split second I'm over even when I'm in the process of slowing down.

As for acceleration, it'll flag obviously safe rates of acceleration as an issue because of its ridiculous sensitivity. We all hate the device but my own parents tell me my driving alone is fine.

I don't know what to make of this since I'm certainly not a passive driver, I move with urgency (while still driving safe). I drive a 2019 Dodge Charger R/T and my acceleration is already pretty jumpy as a default. My yearly mileage is like 7000 miles if that helps me?

Do you guys report saving extensive amounts Witt DriveSafe? Do you think I'll still save with the way things are right now? How is an 80%?

    High Cancer Risk

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 01:48 PM PDT

My husband (48m) and I (33F) are self-employed and have 1 toddler. We have basic health insurance- no insurance agent. My dad was recently diagnosed with cancer (lung), and 3 of his other siblings have previously had cancer (Leukemia, uterine, and brain) with 3 siblings currently not having been diagnosed with cancer. All diagnosed when around 50-62 years of age My grandpa and numerous great aunts/uncles on his side have had cancer as well.

Based on family history on his side, I will be more surprised if I actually don't get cancer in the next 40 years. What would be good/common supplements to add to health insurance to ensure coverage of cost of treatment so treatment wouldn't just be limited to what would be authorized by health insurance, and if death were to occur my family would be ok financially. Not asking for specific companies or cost of supplements, but just the types of supplements you would recommend to someone who has a high(er) chance of getting cancer.

MY CAR INSURANCE IS 498$ A MONTH

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 03:53 AM PDT

My care insurance is 500$ a month and I feel like I'm getting scammed. I live in Los Angeles and I currently have insurance with Farmers insurance. I got my license this august but before that I got into crashed on the freeway without a license and it's on my driving record. I also got a reckless driving charge in Vegas about 2 months ago but I don't think it's reported yet. I recently got a speeding ticket for doing 60 on a Main Street can you believe it ? Should my insurance be this high keep in mind the last 2 tickets are recent and my insurance has been 500$ a month since august. Also do you think my license will get suspended ?

Best way to transition from one job to another and maintain coverage.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 09:28 PM PDT

This is probably one of the most common and most basic questions on here, but as somebody who is diabetic and going to be on his own insurance soon, I need to know a thing or two. Essentially I intend to start a job at a company for about a year's time to build experience to work for another company. The first company provides free health insurance, as it is entirely covered by the employer, a nice perk, but my concern is that when I leave this company, my insurance will either be voided, or I will not be able to afford the premium. My understanding is that employers have certain "windows" for when you can sign up for insurance, so should I time my departure from the first company to the second company? Or is there another way to ensure continuation of coverage without having to sweat about timing my transition based around benefits and not my own convenience?

Renter Insurance NYC - $100k+; excellent total replacement coverage and claims support

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:24 PM PDT

I am moving into an apartment in NYC that requires at least $100,000 worth of liability. I've heard that it's important to have a policy that provides total replacement coverage (I assume this means you get a pretty good pay out in case you lose any of your belongings).

I also want to make sure I go with a company that is responsive to claims and doesn't rely on customers just giving up and/or places that just end up never resolving the case. Additionally I have a broad range of items to cover including furniture, electronics, jewelry, and a bike. Also, in case my apartment becomes inhabitable. No car.

I've heard of Lemonade but don't know much about their track record. I know that State Farm is an established company and my parents have had a pretty good experience with them. I would appreciate any advice before I make my final decision, I've shopped around and so far Lemonade is $23, Liberty Mutual is $15, State Farm is $25. Probably high cause I overestimated the cost of additional possessions. Going to call Travelers once they open too. Ty!

So... how do I actually get reimbursed for my dental work?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 08:38 PM PDT

I went to the dentist for a couple of visits and got some work done. The dentists office said that they weren't willing to file a claim to my insurance (even though they were in network) because they've had trouble with the insurance company in the past. So, they had me pay upfront, and said I could submit a claim for reimbursement.

Now the claim has been submitted and approved... okay? So now how do I get the money? My insurance site says I owe some amount of money that's about half what I paid—so how do I get that money back into my account?

(NJ) Speeding ticket, but the charges were dropped, doI need to report it?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Basically I got a nasty speeding ticket (45mph over, reckless driving due to speed, a few non moving violations). I hired an attorney and got all charges dropped in exchange for unsafe driving.

Im shopping for new insurance, and it's asking for my driving record (accidents, insurance claims, tickets). Do I need to report this, since the charges were dropped and its not on my dmv record?

    Claims Adjuster Trainee limbo

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:21 PM PDT

This is for Progressive. I'm just wondering if anyone else is going through this or has gone through this: I applied, did an assessment, got a video interview done all within a week and it was relatively quick. After a few more days my status on their portal switched to "Interview" and said something about them scheduling office interviews. Now, I'm not generally one to get anxious and I gave it a few weeks, but I'm going on roughly a month with this status and no communication. Is this something that can happen from time to time or did my application hit some sort of one-off bug?

    cosmetic adhesive insurance

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:49 PM PDT

I have a company which is importing faux mink eyelashes and eyelash adhesive from china into Australia for resale. Is there anyone else on here who has a similar business selling similar products who are insured? We have been denied by several insurers due to the nature of our products. Any help would be much appreciated.

Life insurance after a heart attack?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 06:41 PM PDT

Hubby is 45. Had a heart attack early last year (so about 1.5 years ago). He's doing much much better. We've been trying to get life insurance for him since then with zero luck. He's always declined nearly instantly. We're both property claim adjusters, so we fully realize if we're successful in getting a policy, our premiums will be pricy which we're fully ready to accept... if we could ever get anyone to approve him. We're primarily concerned with making sure the house is paid off if he passes away because I can't afford the mortgage with my job alone (all other bills are affordable).

    Any suggestions?

Where do I buy insurance for a car when I dont have a license?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:12 PM PDT

Where I live, I can buy a car without a license, but I need insurance. I bought / ordered a car that will be used with a learners permit to learn, and eventually get my license. The car gets here next week, but I will need insurance for them to leave the car with me. The issue is that the insurance providers I have checked (geico, etc), assume that I already have a license and ask for it with no option to say "I dont have a license". This is ironic since in order to get a license, I need a car, and in order to have a car, I need insurance, but these companies are assuming that I have a license. I understand that typically, a person learns by using their parent's car or something like that, but I moved out years ago, and just used ubers to commute to work etc.

TLDR: I am allowed to buy a car and buy insurance in CA without a license, but dont know where to buy insurance since the places I tried online are assuming I have a license. I am buying this car to learn with a learner's permit, and then get a license afterwards.

    Getting the maximum?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 09:19 PM PDT

I just totaled my vehicle this weekend. Went sideways off a embankment on an icy road. I owe near $30K on it and an guessing the book value was <$26K. Are there any tips or tactics to getting the maximum payout so that hopefully I can get out of this financing?

Will my car still be fixed even if there is previous damage?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 04:57 PM PDT

So in April I got into an accident (my fault) and it did damage to my front passenger side. It damaged the hood, bumper, and headlight. I opened a claim, just haven't had the 1k for the deductible. The repair was estimated at $5,300.

This month I got into another accident, however it was not my fault and the other driver admitted fault. The damage that was done was to my DRIVERS SIDE bumper, hood, and headlight. This time I was offered to be paid out for the damages minus my deductible of 1k.

My concern is....even I go in for an estimate are they only going to consider the new damage? I only ask because to repair my new damage, it would by default repair my old damage. If the case is that they only look at the new damage, then my understanding would be that I can take 1k of the insurance payout and use it for my first claim, by default repairing all but the headlight on my drivers side, and hang onto the remaining insurance money.

    Am I missing something?

VIN Inspection question! I posted this in another subreddit and they said this was a better place for me to find an answer (WASHINGTON)

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 10:35 AM PDT

A couple of months ago, I bought a car from CoPart using my mom's friend's buyers license. This means it was bought under his member ship. Furthermore, they wouldn't mail me the bill of sale/odometer agreement directly... They had to send it to him (in California). The people at CoPart did not sign the sellers signature line, and the buyer signed where CoPart should have signed, leaving the Seller's signature line open. When I brought the car to the licensing office, they told me that I had to correct this. Fortunately for me, I have a cousin who works at a nearby CoPart, so he was able to hook me up with a new set of paperwork. Problem is, I need the friend of my mom to sign. I still have all of the original paperwork, including his signature.

Now, this is where things get sticky. My mom thought it would be okay for us to do this, since "this is how we always do it" (mom's bf uses her friend to buy/flip cars, I now know I could have bought this car with a 400 dollar deposit and this all could have been avoided). While we were at the licensing office, they pointed out the missing/incorrect signing. They also gave us an odometer disclosure and a certificate of fact (my cousin also printed out a new certificate of fact for me). These new pieces of paper need the buyers signature, so it can be transfered to my name. But this motherfucker is in California or Mexico, I'm not entirely sure. So my mom decided to forge the signature on the odometer disclosure AND the certificate of fact (only one of the signature lines, there are two). You can tell two different people have signed these papers using the same name, one of them even has a letter missing.

On top of this mess right here, there was some damage that needed repairs since it was in an accident: Left side doors have minor damage, right side mirror is damaged (front cover is gone, it hangs a bit from the door, will this pass inspection?), there's a small dent on the hood (which doesn't stop the hood from opening), and the windshield needed to be replaced. My mom's boyfriend knows a guy who replaced my ELECTRONIC windshield for 225 dollars. A deal right? Well this guy didn't bother writing out a proper invoice, so that means as of now I don't have a receipt for that repair. On my area's state patrol website, the windshield isn't listed as a major repair, but I'm not sure if that's going to keep me from running into any problems.

So at this point, I have improper signatures, no receipt for my repair, and my VIN inspection is on Monday.

Should I just cancel my appointment?

I'm not sure what I can do at this point and scheduling another appointment is gonna be a hassle.

Would they tow my car at the VIN line? I've been driving around using 15 day permits, but I'm not sure if that's legal lol, haven't been pulled over yet...

Received a letter from Liberty Mutual cancelling my umbrella policy. Please help!

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 02:15 PM PDT

I'm in NJ. So I got a letter from my insurance company stating that they'd be canceling my umbrella policy due to a driving while suspended (my second) ticket and conviction I received. I went to court and got a ruling on this almost a year ago but I just received the letter recently. I spoke to someone at the company (Liberty Mutual) and they said I needed to get it removed from my record. They will cancel the policy on November 6th.

Is this possible? Do I contact the DMV or the court that I received the ticket from?

Starting first time insurance producer job tomorrow. Have some questions.

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 05:36 PM PDT

I'm excited to start a new path in my life, but I guess I just have a few questions...

I did some research on reviews from places like glassdoor to get some insight on peoples experiences at this company and specifically those around my area. A lot of people mentioned they had decent turnover rate by not hitting their quotas. Its a captive agency, and I will have a salary + commission, but I've heard some people say you have to buy your own leads, some said they help, some said they slowly take away the salary, so I'm not sure what's accurate. I'm nervous coming from a more technical position, mostly finances of a small start up, that if I'm not great at selling for a bit I could have some issues. Have you found, for the most part, meeting quotas and selling in a captive agency are pretty realistic and achievable? I heard both sides, where people said they worked hard and couldn't meet expectations and some said they worked hard and could. I'm not expecting an easy road by any means, but have you found meeting captive agency expectations are pretty real? We sell all types of insurance which I think helps, too.

Another question, when it comes to independent vs captive, I've only heard pretty much good things about independent and mediocre things about captive. I understand the appeal, and I'd love to do independent eventually. I felt like I was approached by a lot of captive agencies after finishing my license tests for p&c and life and health. But how much harder is it to get in with independent agencies over captive? Is it actually as much better as people say? Why exactly, outside of the multiple options you have available for clients, what's so much better about it would you say?

As for the start, coming from no background, any tips and tricks you have to getting my footing in the field in the first few months, outside of training? Is there a good way to really help learn the industry outside of just what training the company gives? I know the internet is great, but any noobie tips would go a long way.

I'm from Illinois by the way.

3 friends renting a shop for 2 months, general liability insurance question TIA

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 04:34 PM PDT

I (candle maker) am joining 2 others ( one makes leather goods and one makes ceramics) in a pop-up retail store for only 2 months. We are not in a partnership (landlord only wants to deal with one person), just one person signing a lease and the other two are invited to help and to defray costs equally. We need general liability insurance and I need product insurance since people set my product on fire. Do all 3 of us need a separate general liability policy or can just one of us have general liability insurance? Do they need product liability for leather bags and ceramics? We're in California

ELI5 Recoverable depreciation for personal property

    Posted: 25 Oct 2020 03:39 PM PDT

I've searched up the term as well as the policy, but can someone ELI5? To give some more backstory. Home was destroyed by fire. I filed insurance and ended up maxing out on policy. I received that. Now they're telling me there's 4,000 in recoverable depreciation. So simply go out and buy the items I had and they will give me only the depreciated amount listed back? So say a laptop I owned was 1,000 new. The depreciated it 75% and they only gave me 250 for it. So this means I have the full 75% left? Thank you in advance.
