Is Xactimate for home insurance estimates just software designed to undervalue claims? Insurance

Is Xactimate for home insurance estimates just software designed to undervalue claims?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 02:21 AM PDT

I'm dealing with a home insurance company saying my estimates from 6 different contractors are too high.. because they don't match what the home insurance came up with on Xactimate. The home insurance company is saying the price should be half what the contractors are quoting.

All 6 contractors are within $2,800 of each other on a $35,000 job.

I couldn't figure out how the home insurance was coming up with this, so I downloaded the free demo of Xactimate and built the job myself using the updated October 2020 price list for my area.

Two examples that stand out right away:

Xactimate has it preset that it should only cost $5.19 per sqft to install new tile.. the calculator on Homewyze shows a range of estimated labor prices to install new tile to be between $9.70 and $15.75 per sqft for my area (not sure how high this is in relation to the rest of the country, but everything is definitely expensive where I'm at). All 6 of the contractors' quotes are between $10.00 - $11.50 per sqft for the install of tile cost, which doesn't even put them at the high end of that Homewyze range but puts them at double what Xactimate says the job is valued at....

Another example; Xactimate's preset says it should only cost $0.87 per sqft to seal/prime and paint 2 coats on interior walls. At 1,000sqft that is only $870 for all the materials, the paint, and the labor (I couldn't find a felon alcoholic who rides a stolen bicycle to work to supply the paint, materials and labor on 1,000sqft for that cheap).. Homewyze has a range of $3.11 - $6.48 per sqft for my area to paint inside walls. All 6 contractors were between $3.75 - $5.00 per sqft which again isn't even at the top of Homewyze's range and puts the job at more like $3,750 - $5,000 all in as opposed to only $870

I then came across this article - https://www.thecontractorcoachingpartnership.com/Blog-Contractor-Coaching--Construction-Business-Coach-EPA-RRP-Lead-Rule/bid/73754/Why-you-cannot-trust-an-Xactimate-estimate-for-your-insurance-claim

Now I'm wondering is this just software built and managed by insurance companies to provide false data that allows them to under value claims?

If this software is so far off of what all licensed general contractors are charging then what is even the point of it other than to support low evaluations from insurance agents? And how do you negotiate with a representative from the insurance company who just says "we always go off the Xactimate numbers and even tho you have quotes from 6 completely different and independent general contractors, we believe Xactimate is right and they are all wrong"

Hit and run on my house but driver left the license plate

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 08:28 PM PDT

A car ran into the front corner of my house and brick, but his license plate fell off. The police gave his name and insurance info to me. His insurance company stated that the repair quote is higher than his policy's limits and I should file a claim under my insurance company.

After discussing the damage with my insurance company, they were willing to go after the other person's insurance company to recoup damages and my deductible, but they were only willing to patch the damaged brick. My house is 25 years old and every contractor said they will not be able to match the brick and it will appear miss-match or patched when you look at it. Multiple contractors suggested replacing the front exterior brick wall and a potion of the side to the nearest corner.

My concern is the house will lose value since it will have a obvious brick patch on the front exterior. With another person at fault, is my insurance company correct in only patching my house and not restoring to an consistent/non-patched wall? Are there other routes (legal) I can take to have my house repaired in a manner that will not devalue it? The accident takes place in Texas.

    Insurance help

    Posted: 06 Oct 2020 02:01 AM PDT

Hey y'all. So I have some issues with health insurance.

I 21M want to get on my own insurance policy. The one I qualify for is Medicaid. I am a broke college student, so this insurance helps me pay for the medications that I need.

The only problem I have, is that my mother won't take me off her insurance policy. She has a thing against me being on "welfare" and refuses to take me off her insurance policy. She is also abusive, and this is her way of keeping me off my medications. I can't pay for necessary doctor visits, or medications because that policy keeps things at a higher cost.

My question is, how can I get off that insurance policy? Any advice would be great. I'm just not sure what I can do.

Lemonade - sudden monthly transaction fee?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:29 PM PDT

I have been using Lemonade renter's insurance for a year now.

Recently, they emailed me and said, "As an insurance company, regulation requires us to issue a new policy every year. This means that sometimes, prices may change. Your new monthly price for [my address] renters policy is [$1 more than my previous price]. Your new policy is attached here."

When I checked the policy, the price was the same - not $1 more. So, I emailed and asked about this. The person who responded said, "Since you purchased your policy, Lemonade has started charging a $1 fee for each transaction. Because you pay monthly right now, we're charging you $12 annually to make sure we can cover some costs associated with charging your credit card." She then pushed me to switch to the annual payment plan in order to avoid this $1 extra monthly fee.

I pushed back and asked why they said originally that the policy itself had increased in price; she didn't answer, but again pushed me to take the annual payment plan.

I said I would pay by debit card in order to avoid the "costs associated with charging your credit card," and was again pushed to take the annual payment plan. I asked again about paying by debit card, and was eventually told that the charge applied no matter what payment method is used.

The whole experience has left me with a bad taste in my mouth, as I feel they misrepresented the new fee and I don't understand why it's being levied upon me all of a sudden. I also asked a friend who has Lemonade if he had received a similar email, and he hadn't.

So, I'm wondering if I'm right to find this suspicious and annoying - has anyone else experienced this with Lemonade? are they just going to keep adding fees the longer I am with them, with the expectation that I won't leave? why did they misrepresent the fee, and are there any steps I can take to avoid this fee, other than the annual plan?

I really appreciate any second opinions about this. Thank you Reddit!

Is using a family member’s address for health insurance when you don’t have a stable address fraudulent?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 07:13 PM PDT

I signed up three years ago for a health insurance plan that was a marketplace plan but not a subsidized plan, meaning I pay full price.

When I signed up, I was living in a place but knew I'd be moving in a few months to another city and county for a temp contractor assignment, I just didn't know where yet. Because I didn't know where I'd be moving to and didn't want to deal with losing coverage and reapplying, I used my family member's address (that I lived at years before) in another county as my residence address. The particular plan was available in both counties.

Before I had moved into the place I was living in when I signed up, I had no permanent address and had had to move from temporary accommodations across the state several times in one year for temp contractor assignments. After i moved out of the place I was living in when I signed up, I again moved several times between temporary accommodations across the state until I moved back in with the family member whose address I had used as my residential address.

I stayed at my family member's place for a year and then again moved to temporary rentals several times across the state until I got an apartment in another city and county. This county had the same plan as the one I was on, it was just about $20 less a month in my family member's county. I was supposed to move again halfway through the year, so I kept my exact plan that I had had on my family member's residential address despite not actually living there. However, due to covid I decided not to move this year and stay where I am. So I've kept it at that address for 3 years despite only living there a year because a) I don't know where I'll ultimately be living due to moving so much and not having a permanent address b) not wanting to have to re enroll and change my plan every time I move because I'd be changing my plan several times a year and c) my health insurance company customer service is extremely incompetent and just doing something simple like changing a phone number takes multiple phone calls and months to be done properly and I don't have the energy to deal with them several times a year on a plan change where they would inevitably screw it up and cause me to lose coverage. In fact, they've caused me to temporarily lose coverage a few times due to admin errors and each time took multiple hours long phone calls and me almost ripping my hair out.

I thought everything I was doing was fine until it dawned on me that I could have inadvertently engaged in health insurance fraud and I'm posting here to see if I've done so and I could get in trouble.

    I'm in Florida.

Reply to the person who posted on my post because my comment to you isn't showing up: No, I don't have Medicaid. I have a private single person plan with no subsidy, I pay full price each month. I use my family member's address as my permanent residential address and a P.O. Box as my mailing. There is a $20 difference between my family member's zip code and the one I live at now for the plan, meaning, I save $240 a year but that's not why I keep it as my family member's address. I keep it because as my post says, I've moved too many times and don't know where I'll ultimately be living and if I changed it each time I moved, I'd be losing coverage and reapplying for a special enrolment a few times a year not to mention the incompetency of my insurance company and how many hours I'd be spending dealing with them messing something up in that special enrolment if I did it that way

My Homeowners policy is being canceled. Not sure what to do now...

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 04:45 AM PDT

I recently purchased a house. 'When I first signed up with Progressive the said that they would send someone out to do the inspection. Inspection was completed and then they said that we no longer qualify for their policy due to ineligible siding, homes built on an open foundation are ineligible, and condition of roof on detached garage. The home was built in 1910 so it does have a asbestos siding. The open foundation we were able to get that rectify. The roof of the garage is in bad shape but I am in the process of getting that replaced now. I just don't think it is going to be done in time before my policy is canceled.

I'm located in Florida. I've called around other companies like Allstate and State Farm and they all said that they can't help me unless I fix the issues first. Does anyone else have any other advice for me? I greatly appreciate it.

    Need advice (At fault)

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 08:52 PM PDT

My wife backed into a car today and scratched a bumper but the driver wasn't in the car. My wife found her gave her insurance information to the other lady. This was at Toyota so she got an estimate at the spot, must've been a slow day. They quoted her $380. Just a paint job. She has an option of paying $380 cash.

Should we go with insurance or just pay cash and hope for the best?

My wife is worried if she pays the $380 and they claim other issues after. If we decide to go with insurance and they see that it's just a paint job from a scratch that is less than $400 will that cause premium to increase?

more question after my meeting with Insurance agent-tried to sell life policies linked with Market

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 08:32 PM PDT

So this agent spoke about my questions on Term Life policies and was showing interest in selling Life policies linked to Market. is it whole life policies ??

He started projecting as if i will become a millionaire if i invest 10 grand each year for next 20 years and that too with possibility of withdrawing 50 grand after 15th year continuously for next 5 years and still get death benefits. the way he explained about the money growth; it felt as if i was actually a millionaire .... while this agent was talking to me :)

For some reasons i felt that the agent was not fully revealing the truth to me, and he kept saying that his company has historically performed best in market and their customers reaped benefits like anything... so on... for some reasons i felt that he was selectively picking the numbers ( of course based on the requirements which i asked him for...). He did not make it clear to me if there was hidden costs or any penalities or any 'gotchas' which was not revealed to me upfront, inspite of me asking him in different possible ways...

He was more interested in signing me up as a customer,, and i understand he gets commission for a successful sale. but are these market linked insurance policies any good? is my dream of money growth and 50 grand money withdrawals in reality a dream only ? since he kept saying that growth depends on Stock market and we all know what happened due to COVID19 and the stock market crash....

Am i missing something obvious in this sales person/insurance agent trying to sell me market linked insurance policies ?

i dont want to become Bill Gates based on the policy premiums which i pay for any insurance company and i know i wont become Bill Gates... at the same time i dont want this insurance agent to scam me and making me to believe that i will become Bill Gates or Warren Buffet... when in reality the insurance company is going to charge me left, right and center and at the end of the day my premiums are going to be drained by them...

Appreciate your assistance ! im a newbie to this insurance stuffs

    Total Loss

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 03:42 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone!

I hope this is the correct spot to ask this. For background, I drive a 2002 Volkswagen Golf with 205k miles on it. This guy is a little tank. I was recently in an accident where the other party rear ended me and pushed me into the car in front of me. Both the front and back bumpers received superficial damage (dents and paint scrapes). This in no way effects the ability to drive my vehicle. The body shop quoted the repair for both bumpers at $1800 ish dollars total. The at fault party's insurance said that my car was a total loss as the repairs exceeded the value of my car. They offered a $ sum for the total loss and if I wanted to keep my vehicle a fee of $600 but my title would be salvaged. My insurance has proven to be semi-useless with advice on this. I want to keep my car as it is still driveable, but I would have preferred a clean title. Has anyone had experience with this and do they think this is the best route to go? Is there any way to keep a clean title? I reside in Arizona.

    Hit and run temporary plates

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 11:50 AM PDT

I was rear ended while stopped at a red light last week. The driver at fault took off without providing insurance information. Luckily, I got a clear picture of his license plate, which I reported in the police report and to my insurance. My insurance carrier is telling me that since the car had temporary plates (dealer plates), they could not locate the other driver or his insurance company. Is there any other recourse for locating the other driver and/or the insurance company?

Waiting on check - advice needed

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 03:35 PM PDT

My house got struck by lightning in early September. The entire electrical system got screwed and the house is unlivable. It took 3 weeks to get an adjuster, inspector, and contractor estimates done. We got a check sent out a week ago from the insurance company but it got lost in the mail. Insurance adjuster said she'd track it down because it would take another week to get that check voided and another sent out. Me, my partner, and our child and pets have been staying in one bedroom in my parents' home. The environment is quite toxic between my family and I'm slowly getting more and more depressed/stressed staying here. We have to pay the contractor half in order for them to begin, so at this point it's been over a month and the house has been untouched. The inspector told us to not pay anything out of pocket before we get our check in order to "protect us". But at this point, I feel like taking out a personal loan just to get the work started because I'm tired of this waiting game we've been on. My question is, what are the dangers of doing this?

    Hello,

I am currently working for a third party claims processing company which has many clients (Allstate, Mercury, etc). I am looking to stay in this position for around a year but I am not one hundred percent satisfied with my pay. I am looking to transition into a claims adjuster position with Allstate or another larger insurance company in the future. I do plan on getting a license and I have also graduated college with a bachelors degree one year ago. Does anybody have any suggestions for me? Thanks

“Not Authorized” to make changes to policy, how to get permission?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 10:15 AM PDT

My parent pays for my auto insurance, however I believe I can get a significantly cheaper rate and was going to call my agent to discuss my policy. Apparently I am not authorized to make changes when I introduced myself as the primary driver of the car, as I don't have access granted from the policy owner (being my dad).

Do I just get my dad on the phone to tell them I have authorization? How would they even prove that it's my father in the phone? I say this because it seems as though they would have answered my questions about the policy changing if I had just given them my dads name instead of mine, doesn't seem very secure unless I have to do anything else. In Ontario with RBC/Aviva if that helps.

    Progressive Snapshot

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 03:08 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I need a bit of advice. So I live in Michigan and have been with progressive for about a year and a half. Last policy term I opted in to Snapshot, their discount based on driving behavior program. I got a 350$ discount at the end of my term and was asked to return device which I did. The discount would apply to this term; however, my state had a insurance reform and my agent had to start a new policy (on my account there are now two policies listed). My snapshot discount never got to me and my agent says she was required to start a new policy due to the state law changes. I called the Customer Service and even talked to the supervisor. They are refusing to honor my discount although I haven't changed anything about my account, just the policy switch which to my knowledge was unavoidable. I just wanted to hear if anyone else has had anything similar and any advice you guys have for me. Thanks!

After being told there was no copay for a prescription, I'm being billed $3200?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 09:08 AM PDT

I was insured with Oxford through my employer in New York for the past three years. Didn't accrue enough hours in 2019 to stay covered in 2020, so I lost my old insurance at the end of February.

My employer happened to switch insurance companies to Empire Blue Cross starting in March. Empire sent me a membership card in the mail, which was confusing my employer told me I wouldn't be covered. We were all laid off later in the month due to the pandemic.

I gave the OptumRX pharmacy my new Empire Blue Cross insurance information and they continued to refill my anti-HIV medication with zero copay for the months of April and May. I'd been refilling through them for two years, always with no copay.

Late June I get an invoice from a collections company saying I owe $3200 for the two months' supply of the drug -- this after being quoted at zero copay.

Apparently my health insurance lasted one month, through the end of March, but I was never notified that coverage ended when I re-ordered the drug in April and May. I would have never ordered the drug if I knew I was paying $1600 per month out of pocket.

So the pharmacy doesn't let me know that my insurance had expired (again, they told me zero copay in April and May) and I didn't get any notification from Empire Blue Cross either. Compounding this confusion is when I login to the EBC website, it says my two transactions for the drug were approved and that I owe zero money.

How come on my profile online it says I owe nothing but they are coming after me with a collections agency? What do I do?

Fender Bender: To file a claim or to pay out of pocket

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:47 PM PDT

2019 shiny and nearly new GMC Sierra 4WD..Backing out of my driveway in the pitch dark this morning and backed into an oak tree that jumped out at me. Can't believe I did that.. but I digress...

Won't let me post pics - basically dented the rear bumper about 6"x12" section and a dent in the tailgate about 4"x8".... bare with me for pics when I figure out how to upload. My deductible is $500. I think my premiums for both vehicles are around $450/6mo. If I file this with Geico (my insurance company) is there a way to determine how much this would increase my premium?

I found somewhere that hitting a tree is considered an "at fault" accident. This would increase my premium for (three??) years?

State of claim would be MAINE.

I am trying to figure out a cost analysis. I am thinking there is $2000-3000 in body repair? Or someone feel free to chime in.

    Thanks in advance.

    Got a $18,000 subrogation letter

    Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:28 PM PDT

So here are some details. About 18 months ago I was in bed in an altercation where I drove my car into someone else's out of fear and panic. I was subsequently arrested and charged with menacing. I thought I was acting in self defense.

I paid restitution to the victim for his insurance deductible costs and paid out of pocket for my own vehicle repairs ($8,000).

Today, 18 months after that incident and over a year since the end of the court case, I received a letter from a collector that his insurance, State Farm, is requesting me to pay $18,000.

I have contacted my insurance (whom denied repair for my own car because they said I was at fault), and filed a new claim and am going to speak to an adjustor tomorrow.

I also sent the letter to my criminal defense attorney who handled the case.

What do I do? What should I be expecting? What can I do to best prepare myself? I'm a fairly broke college student and $18,000 would take years to make.

Edit: my insurance is in Texas and the victims insurance is in Colorado. The event occurred in Colorado. I am now living in Texas.
