Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Does anyone else do FIRE because they like seeing numbers go up, and not working is just an added bonus?

I treat it like a video game where I want to get a high score. However, I want the greatest probability of getting that high score, so capital intensive businesses like startups or real estate don't work for me, all VTI baby.

By "numbers" I don't mean it's fun to see any random numbers go up, I mean it's specifically exciting to see your net worth go up every day. Of course I'm going to spend the money I will make eventually.

I don't really hate working, I like my job and career a lot; the fun is just in optimizing the system for my benefit, as doing this is interesting in and of itself to me as a programmer. Does anyone else feel the same way?
