Do you ever charge a rush fee? small business

Do you ever charge a rush fee?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 03:37 PM PDT

I have a client who I told 6 days ago that I would need specific information regarding the custom item(s) within the next couple days in order to meet their deadline. They just sent me the information mid day today, and now they need it a day earlier then they originally said (and it looks like early that day, so really almost 2 days).

Would it be reasonable to charge them a rush fee? They expressed to me earlier that they wanted to stick to the pre-determined price.

This is a relatively large order, so I don't want to lose it, but it may require me to spend more on shipping to get the materials in time.

How much do I charge my clients for my assistant's work?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 10:15 AM PDT

If my assistant works 5 hours on a project, how much do I charge my client? I am billing the client as myself. She clocks more hours than I would on the same project because she's in training.

If she clocks 5 hours, should I bill 2.5? Or?

Currently sole proprietor, trying to branch out and add an employee. I don't want to tell my clients about her yet because she is still in the trial and training stages. Also, the quality and quickness of her work is likely to never match mine. But, she is extremely helpful simple and tedious tasks.

should the start of business be sloppy?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 08:17 PM PDT

I keep thinking things have to be so thought out, and clean cut. Does the first couple of years need to be a lot of bold chances, and sloppy?Later on things start o look very coordinated?

Whats the mentality to getting a business up to making good money?

What do you look for in an office lease?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 08:56 PM PDT

I just bought my first office building and will be leasing out half to another company. What are some items that are either deal killers or special items that really sell you on leasing a new space?

    Thanks for your time!

[QUESTION] Terminating an employee due to liability risks

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:49 PM PDT

I need to let go of an employee because she has come so close to having us need to file a liability claim...more than once!

Employee has been with us for nearly a year, and each time a mistake happens (liability mistake) I talk with the employee on how to prevent this from happening again, and what to keep in mind. Then a 30-60 days later, another incident arises.

I can't do it anymore and don't want to wait for that moment for when a big mistake happens and someone files something against us. Besides running late, she doesn't make the same mistakes twice. But it's a 'big deal' mistake every 30-60 days.

MY QUESTION IS: What is the best way to let this employee go? Would it be telling them that this isn't a good fit for them even though they've been with us a year? Should I be honest that they have become a risk to our company and we need to let them go?

Finding it hard to find motivation

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:46 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm Julien aka Hero. I have a small business where I sell skin care products and tea.

I have a passion for both but, the sells are disheartening because I have many great products but at a market price that is pretty fair but, low traffic so it doesn't add up to cost running a site and keeping things fresh.

Currently my job is funding my business which I'm okay with but, it's killing my motivation to get 3 or 4 sells a month on various platforms in totally not just my site. eBay mercari etc.

Could anyone advise me or give helpful hints? My site is Shophero.net.

Please be harsh. I know it'll come from a good place. Just feel stuck. I've been open a year and a half and last year I went from zero sales to 3 or 4 a month with advertising. Bing, facebook, Google.

Tips on the site lay out and colors and theme would help a lot even description.

US LLC, remotely based in Colombia - do I need bookkeeping? CPA says no

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 08:20 PM PDT

Just started an LLC in the US but I am based in Colombia. We don't have physical products, we create ads so everything is online, including revenue collection. All of our workers are based in Colombia as well so we don't have any W2 employees or 1099 contractors. We just take draws from our US bank account, transfer to Colombia bank account, and pay them that way. We were considering finding a bookkeeping solution for our biz, but we spoke with a CPA who told us that we wouldn't need bookkeeping for our business because we don't have any US workers or physical products/inventory to deal with. We'd just need to file a few forms each year.

Is this true? Should I get a second opinion? It seems weird that I wouldn't need bookkeeping since I imagine it would give me better visibility of my finances and could help me maximize my tax deductions...I'm confused.

    Reliable Online Voicemail

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:22 PM PDT

My HOA which due to its size is considered as some kind of corporation has an AT&T landline line which is very expensive. It is only used for residents to leave messages to a physical answering machine.

We want to port the number to an online voicemail system that allows checking messages by calling an access number & a PIN.

The people involved are old-fashioned and it needs to be set it and forget it. It doesn't have to be the cheapest, but it is important to be from a reliable and stable provider.

    Any recommendations?

Is your brand more important than details

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 04:55 PM PDT

I'm at the point that I need to invest more in advertising. At the same time I'm reluctant to add details like phone numbers and my address because I feel like it takes away from the brand. My question is in today's technology with Google and what not is it better to just push your brand and not have your phone number or your address or details for the matter?

Edit: just to clarify I have course have my phone number and details readily available I'm talking about merchandise and car wraps and overall advertising of my brand.

Anyone have a run in with "Business Talk Radio"?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 07:01 AM PDT

Just received a call from a 'booking agent' for a radio show I've never heard of. She didn't use my name, but went right into the cold start about how they are a radio show out of Rockefeller center called "Business Talk Radio" and they wanted me to talk on their show. Took a quick look at their site while she was trying to get me to commit to an episode recording and I got weird vibes. The more I clicked through their site the more it seemed like a scam. Or at best, a fluff service that truly serves nobody. Has anyone ever had a similar experience and actually gone ahead with being on the show?

Here's their url. The fact that the number 1 is in the URL is another flag for me lol. As a small business owner, I get how this could be appealing, but it came totally out of left field, and I went with my gut and said no.

Suggestions on how to deal with possible incoming copied product.

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:00 PM PDT

    Hey everyone

We have a successful product in backyard farming category. We sell online for the last 4 years and started to become a recognized brand. Or at least a brand people have heard about. Our product is premium, hard to make, and our customer service is second to none. People who are switching their equipment are happy, and happy to share it on social media. We are still too small compared to the big few players in the field. They know us. We talked to them in the past and all.

Well, just like all good things, our product was copied by a Chinese manufacturer with hideous colors and now sent on email lists all over the world saying they have a new design/product. Our product uses the highest quality materials, everything food grade, everything certified. They can not compete on price if they go with the same quality and precision.

The design is patented internationally. So how would I deal with this product? We will already let them know that it's a patented design and we will do everything to prevent the product's sale in the US and other countries. Another alternative is to actually let them come and create an awareness of the product features, increasing the conversion of people and have them pick me when they are looking for one because of better quality product and known customer service.

We are more like Tesla. There were already cars with internal combustion engines for 100 years. We made an electric one. We have a very small percentage of the market. Many haven't seen one, some have heard of it. I have patents on electric cars. I can fight to prevent making anyone else make electric cars. Or have them make it, show how nice they are and make them aware of all the features. And when they are shopping for one and decide to go electric, they pick the one with the most experience and best design etc (which would be us).

How would you do? Just looking for ideas.

    Thanks in advance

    Taka

    Finally starting my business idea!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:05 PM PDT

    Hey y'all!

I've finally decided to start my business idea! I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to be able to join small business/home business communities :) I have a few questions for everyone, please let me know if y'all can help.

    • Does anyone have any recommendations on where to find crinkle paper, packaging boxes, etc in bulk?

    • Does anyone know where to find candle jars, lids, etc in bulk and for a good price? (I would also love to use pottery but I'm not sure if you find that online or you go to shops or individuals)

    • Does anyone know where to buy those small wooden hammers in bulk?

    • Advice in buying items in bulk in store or online?

*I've heard a lot about people preferring etsy over a website domain and visa versa. What's your advice?

    • Any general advice y'all have, I would be so happy and grateful to hear it!

I'm starting this side business to have extra income coming in. As well as to have something brightens our day because it is something we enjoy doing! Things are really tight right now and this will really help us financially.

Thank y'all so much for reading this!

    First time opening business

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 10:46 AM PDT

Hello, I am hoping to find insight and guidance on the best way to organize and structure my business. My concerns are less about how to operate the business in its day-to-day operations but more-so about anything finance-related, deductions, and taxes.

The business is an LLC and has two employees. The business has contracted with another entity where one employee is paid $28k per year from that contract and I am contracted to receive $125k for my salary. Per an arrangement between me and the other employee, I am paying her an additional $7k per year from my end. The business also gets reimbursements and rent pay, so if that matters for purposes of any analysis I am happy to expound on those numbers.

As the owner of the LLC, my understanding is that I can set my wage at a reasonable amount. From those of you who are experienced in this, what would you recommend I do? Should I set my salary as high as I can minus any necessary expenses or is it better to do a lower amount for other reasons? I'm new to all of this and am not sure what the best approach is.

Part of my issue or concern is that I don't know enough to know what questions I should be asking, but maybe this is a good starting point. I'm happy to answer questions or elaborate on other areas if it will give a better picture of what I'm dealing with. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Deferred Compensation - Search Fund Operating Agreement

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 09:49 AM PDT

I am working with an investor on buying a small business, and have been getting pretty close to closing on a company, with a couple of Letters of Intent near being accepted. My investor and I are finalizing how to structure the operating agreement. Generally speaking, it seems like operators typically receive a salary, a percentage of the profits for each year that achieves target EBITDA (deferred), then an equity stake once the business is free and clear. How would such a deferred compensation be paid out? Assuming we are able to successfully pay down all the debt on the business in a three to five year period, would the percentage of profits from those deferred years be paid as a lump sum once we are free and clear? For example, if I were to annually receive a percentage of EBITDA that reaches $700,000 until the business is paid off, and then an equity stake, and we paid off the business at the end of year 3, would I receive the equity stake + the deferred payment from those previous years? I'm not sure how it should be structured.

    Looking for advice

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 05:40 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm a working student [ I study business and finance, this is where my interest lies as well ]and I've worked in a range of roles dealing with business functions and operations along with some general administrative work.

Just to give you a fair idea:

I've dealt with business functions and tasks such as managing operations, logistics coordination, product sourcing, inter-departmental coordination, data and business analysis, preparing business reports and feasibility reports on new ideas, tracking project updates and other key metrics, etc.

I've also dealt with general administrative work or carrying out the functions of an assistant. Everything from schedule management, managing internal and external correspondence, coordinating various activities, organizing remote meetings, business/technical writing, client invoicing and billing, tracking and managing budgetary spending on various projects, etc.

Due to certain reasons, I'm only open to working remotely.

This is not a troll post or anything. But, I'm currently looking to work for free - to be more specific - looking for a mentor or to work as an intern. Any advice on how to proceed? And if, anyone reading this is open to an arrangement like this - do let me know.

Ideally, I'd want to work under an experienced business owner. So that, I'd get the most out of this experience.

I know that offering to work for free sounds sketchy and unreliable due to the lack of accountability involved. Any tips on how to avoid this?

And, before anyone brings this up. I'm well aware that the best way to learn is to actually work in that niche/field. I totally agree with that. But, with the pandemic and everything, it's been incredibly difficult for me to land any roles. I feel like I'm really wasting away all my time. So, I thought this would be a good way to make use of it by gaining more experience and increasing my network as well.

Disclaimer: This is not my main account.
