Working in big4 while not being white Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:11 AM PDT I've worked for two of the big4 firms for the better part of the last decade and the topic of "racial diversity" was a regular theme at both firms. Each firm had firm-wide seminars and special trainings for "highly talented diverse staff" to "help" us succeed. At the bottom of these internal emails theres always a disclaimer for eligibility usually along the lines of "this program is designed for individuals who identify as african american, hispanic, asian pacific islander, asian, native american, mixed of two or more races or other". Why not just say "non-white" person? Anyways, I find myself getting more and more annoyed with these programs and seminars. I've been able to manage life perfectly well as a "non-white" person and this constant barrage of reaching out to "non-white" people to talk about not being white is just aggravating at this point. To my non-white colleagues do you receive the same type of communications from your firm? How does it make you feel? Apologies in advance for grammar etc (posted on phone). [link] [comments]
How do you keep kool-aid drinking mentors off your back? Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:09 AM PDT Everyone in our firm is assigned a mentor who advises you on how your performance reviews are looking, things you should do to get promoted etc. Mine is actually pretty nice as a person but I swear to god they dope on the kool-aid hard. I get a decent performance review? You should really put more effort in to try and get the top reviews so that you can be recognized and promoted! Only turn up to social events half the time? You need to make more of an effort to socialize with the higher ups. Listen pal, I don't keep getting moderately-above-average reviews because I'm not putting enough effort in. I'm getting moderately-above-average reviews because honestly who gives a shit? The reward for top tier performance is more work, and I don't care about promotions because I'm getting the fuck outta dodge the second I qualify - seriously those resumes are going to fly out left right and centre. Similar reasoning behind social events. Why would I bother sucking up to the higher ups when I'm going to fuck off shortly? Of course I can't say this to them or they'll probably go full Stasi. Any accountants here apart of the FIRE movement? Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:15 PM PDT Engineers are by far the most common types of people who FIRE( Financial Independence Retire Early) because they make a lot of money at a young age, live frugal, most likely introverts, and high turnover causing them to somewhat think about early retirement in there 30s. I assume many accountants have a strong financial background, so utilize the same skills in your personal finances. Why are engineers the most common types of people in the FIRE movement, is it because accounting people are much happier in there careers compared to engineering? Is h&r/local tax prep companies worth it Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:49 PM PDT Hello. I'm a senior. Career changer. Plan on graduating in the summer. I have 7 classes left after this semester. Also working at Amazon. I know I need to be in a relatable job. Of course everything shut down in the spring and summer and my applications weren't getting me interviews anyway. Is the terrible pay at H&R block and other franchises worth it just to get tax experience on my resume? (I'm seeing $10 an hour on some sites.) What about the extremely smaller fly by night tax prep companies that pay commissions, but you have to get your own clients. They always seem shady to me. I'm in the south, so finance jobs aren't falling out of the sky. I'm contemplating moving back to phoenix. Should I simply do the franchise tax job here, take the pay cut for roughly 7 months, and apply to entry level tax jobs in another city that hire after the summer? I'm a veteran so I think I will have enough credits for the CPA. My gi bill is almost out so I doubt I'll go for the masters. Is the masters in taxation even worth it? I do want to specialize in tax, but after making it this far I feel like my degree has not helped me for this career. Has the masters helped those of you who have it? There is only one tax class at my university and it is highly suggested to be taken the very last semester. While back in phx, the community college I attended had the tax class mandatory in the accounting associates(only) program and you had to go work at VITA. Well of course vita is canceled due to covid, but it has never been mentioned in any of my classes over the year i've been attending. Do most 4yr degree plans not care about tax? Any tips are appreciated. [link] [comments]
Moss Adams Employment Benefits Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:17 PM PDT Hi I was just wondering what Moss Adams pay for audit ever since the pandemic. Also what are the raises and bonuses like and at what percentage (also how often do these occur). And how often do you get promoted. I'm curious about the vacation days off you can have. Thank you. Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:37 PM PDT I am tired. 2 weeks off isn't enough to recover from the 9/15 and 10/15 deadlines but I can't let myself stop. Not to mention I'm looking for a job. Turns out the job I really want, the one I feel very excited and energized for - says I'm overqualified for what they want right now. Helloooo. Now is the time. It's the end of October. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here tomorrow. Then it's January, then it's busy season. You need me now so we can both get acclimated. And for the other places I've talked to: I don't want to be partner one day. Stop asking me. Yes, I want to stay somewhere for 5, 7, 10 years because here is a little tid bit: interviewing and starting a new job is just as exhausted as hiring someone and then them leaving. Your resources are money, my resources are mental capacity. I want to be that "back office" manager that is technical and staying up on all the tax topics. You have great business development people for a reason now compensate me for doing the work those business development people are promising. Stop putting so much pressure on 30 year olds to have it all figured out. I'm child free, I don't need partner money to put two kids thru private grade school. Doesn't mean I'm not going to work hard but I'm not going to kill myself to make you richer. And industry for tax professionals is boring. I like the variety of different clients. Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:18 PM PDT Hello - Can I have your advice on what softwares used in Accounting I should learn? And if you know somewhere I can learn that and if they have certifications. I am planning to quit EY after this busy season (IT Audit) and would also like to leverage the resources since we get free access to Udemy Business. I have basic understanding of SQL, SAP ECC and ServiceNow. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:49 PM PDT Rant: Don't like them especially if my weekends and time-offs I'm required to go. Could we just call it a day and rest on our own. The last thing I want to see on my rest days are my co-workers especially if they are absolute a-holes at work. That's my rant. Anyway got to do extra time at work to compensate with the time lost during last week's happy hour. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:23 PM PDT Is there normally a difference between the intern salary and first year associate salary in b4 firms? If so, by how much? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:22 PM PDT F*** co-workers, they blame things on you if you make a mistake. You have to be careful of what you train them on and if you listen to what they train you on. Can't catch up or have them do work efficiently, you're in trouble. Don't give a crap about management as long as you give them results, work quickly, detailed-oriented, responsible and hardworker, yada, yada, etc. Tired of favoritism, the corporate ladder, saving expenses and making a profit. I'm tried of studying for the CPA. All c-suite executives are fake anyway. Rant over. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:33 PM PDT Hey there! I am a senior undergrad accounting student who is set to graduate this coming May. I'm still hesitant about whether I want to go into accounting. I had an internship lined up for the previous summer but COVID cancelled it and I have no experience in the accounting field, so I am unsure whether I want to go or not since I don't have any experience in it. I have thought about an MBA since it would give me flexibility and allow me to sit for the CPA (and my school offers a 5 year program for both). I originally had planned to skip a year of school and try to work full time, but now I'm debating if this may be a good option for me to do a 5 year program. What do you guys think? PS: Not from a top 20 school and I'm in the NYC area. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:32 PM PDT As the title says, does CMA have any merit for Internal Auditor? Any Internal Auditors who benefited from having this cert? When doing some works (e.g., analyzing financial statements, evaluating how costs are accounted for projects, and reviewing financial processes, including budgeting/forecasting), I felt some gaps in my skills and knowledge. That is why I became interested in CMA. I have been in IA for 10 yrs now and no plans to switch my career. CPA is not an option for me because of the time/cost commitment (non-accounting business major). Plus, my employer will reimburse CMA, but not CPA. Appreciate any feedback. [link] [comments]
Anyone pass the CFA exams? Did it help your career? Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:35 AM PDT I'm a CPA and work in big 4 TAS. I've been thinking about taking the CFA exams to help my career but I'm not sure if it will have an impact. A few people in my group passed the exams but still work in TAS. Doesn't seem like it has helped their career in any meaningful way. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 12:39 PM PDT The above sentence alone is already depressing enough, but I didn't even get the random gift they promised way back when at FYE. Can anyone fill a fella in? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:04 PM PDT I have a big4 internship for sum 2021 and hope to get a FT offer at the end. I'll graduate undergrad dec 2021 and hope to have 150 by dec 2022. Are ft offered to people when my 150 is still so far away? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:51 AM PDT Happy to answer any questions people have. Drop them in the comments. I am once again calling upon my favorite sub for some perspective here. I am a B4 audit senior with my CPA. I recently received an offer from a boutique investment banking group to join as an Analyst. In rebuttal, my employer is pulling together an offer to join as a senior in their TAS group and work primarily in FDD. This rebuttal is convoluting things and making me second guess what to do. In short, here's my interests and long term career aspirations:
At the end of the day, I like getting into the details and understanding why things work and then flipping then on their side to improve them. So fine with taking risks. Some of the specific things I'd like to know are: 1. Is boutique investment banking more prestigious on a resume than B4 TAS (I.e., does it matter what firm I go to as long as I've done a banking role, or am I giving up a lot of reputation leaving B4 for a smaller shop)
