New audit associate, keep making mistakes.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 06:51 PM PDT

Been working at a local CPA firm for 6 weeks. Feel like I have been picking up the work quickly but I'm worried since I have repeated a few of the same mistakes and feel that the partner is getting frustrated. I've been taking diligent notes and have a checklist of past review comments I go through before submitting any workpapers but still find myself getting emails from the partner asking me to quote "write this note down, bold it, then highlight it", since its a mistake I've made before.

I guess I'm struggling with a lack of any positive feedback along with having no clue how I am doing compared to the other new associates. Is this normal? Or do I need to tread lightly. I've gotten positive comments from my 2 managers but the partner is the main one who does all the final reviews since its a small firm and he's never really said anything positive.

I'll add this is my first real job straight out of college besides internships.

How common is it to switch between tax and audit once you start working?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 09:46 PM PDT

I've seen posts implying that sometimes people switch service lines when they start working, either by choice or by necessity. How common is this?

I'm currently getting a masters in accounting with a concentration in tax. Other than an Intro to Audit course, I feel like I'd be utterly unprepared to engage in audit work.

Bookkeeping Business Idea as a CPA

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:07 PM PDT

    Hello All,

I am potentially considering starting a bookkeeping business to help fund other dreams that I have on the other side. I have my CPA and am currently work at a CPA firm in Audit but despise the lifestyle/work/meaning that I am in. I really do know how valuable of an opportunity it is working in Audit, but I know this just is not meant for me. I wanted to know what people in the industry think of bookkeeping as a side hustle. I know the flexibility would help achieve my other goals while having steady income.

    My questions are:

-Can a CPA charge a higher rate than non CPAs? Also are CPAs in a better place starting out building a business?

-What is the range a CPA could charge for a monthly rate (Tennessee is my residence)?

-Are there more affordable options than Bookkeepers.com/launch to start learning what I need to do (I have considered quickbooks online certification and potentially some community college classes)?

-What are the main challenges that someone starting their own bookkeeping business face?

-Is starting your own bookkeeping business viable to make decent income working 20-30 hours a week? What could potentially be a yearly income to target?

-What other considerations/factors in starting a bookkeeping business do you recommend?

Any answers to these questions would be very helpful thanks!

Why are suppliers required to pay value added tax?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 08:03 PM PDT

Im wondering about the very simple logic behind why suppliers pay value added tax. And is it actually supplier paying the tax or the purchaser? When I read the government guide, it sounds like purchser is paying it but suppliers collect it and pay it. However, when I read about small suppliers not required to collect and pay, it seems it is suppliers' obligation. Its so confusing.

    Please help.

Unsure if a class meets CPA ethics requirement

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 08:00 PM PDT

So I go to school in California and I am planning to take a course called Fraud Examination (ACTG 59) at Foothill college which is a community college. I'm just not sure whether it counts towards the ethics requirement. Who should I contact to figure out whether a class meets a CPA requirement?

getting rejected from all firms, big and small, for entry level positions with all CPA exams passed and a degree, need advice please

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 04:12 PM PDT

Basically the title, I've only been rejected from larger firms and gotten no response from smaller firms (I've only been applying for entry level positions too.) I've got my degree (3.2 gpa) and just finished the CPA exams, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here. The only reason I can think of as to why I'm not getting any responses is that I graduated 2 years ago or mediocre 3.2 gpa. My only lead is one friend who is an associate at a local audit firm, if that falls through I feel like I'm gonna be completely screwed. I just don't know what these firms are looking for, I even worked with a resume coach and I feel like my applications were solid. What would you do here?
