Whelp. I quit my Engineering job during a pandemic shutdown to be a full time blacksmith. Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:48 AM PDT And holy crap business is booming. Some may remember my post earlier this year about planning to quit my job to be a full time knifemaker in the spring of 2022 to have perfect positioning and blah blah blah. Well guess what? It doesn't work like that. When it's time to make the jump, it's f**king time. I left my job 2 weeks ago and have been working nonstop since then. It seems like every day I have a new email asking for quotes or someone buying stuff off my website. My biggest fear was having too little work to sustain me which is totally not happening. I'm already making more than I did at my old job with all the freedom in the world to set my own priorities. A few quick advice bullets for anyone trying to go down a similar path:
And that's where I'm at now- full time and pulling in tons of revenue despite the COVID shutdown. Ask me anything below; but I may not respond immediately since I have lots to do in the forge today! [link] [comments] |
Our First Frivolous Lawsuit - mask related Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:37 PM PDT Well, was just a matter of time. Got served by a potential customer who didn't want to wear a mask in the store. Basically, was told must have a mask on in the store. Is making ADA claim - with a very vague reference to a "neck injury". From our research is is unlikely that he has a respiratory disability preventing him from wearing a mask, also unlikely that his son with him has the same thing to be exempt. We do offer curbside pick up and local delivery, so there are accommodations that can be made. However, it was a no win situation with this guy. Further research indicates that Covid represents a large enough public health risk that you don't have to allow someone with a legitimate mask wearing disability in your business anyways. Guy doesn't have much of a case, probably hopes we roll over and settle (which lawyers might advise anyways). Either way, last thing I need right now is a drain of money and time. Mostly here to vent, I was furious when we got served. But also, remind your employees that the safest response to anyone saying they are exempt is to offer to shop for them while they wait in their car, or something similar. That being said, you are technically allowed to question the type of exemption and what the disability is, but there's people out there looking for an excuse. [link] [comments] |
Hypothetical question about a business idea Posted: 03 Sep 2020 03:01 AM PDT Okay, I have no idea how to summarize this yet, so here's my thought process coming up with this product idea. Let's say you need something fixed around you house (there's a pipe leaking, or your oven door is not being properly shut, or maybe it's just a tiny crack in your wall). You know you could get a professional to fix this for you, but we're all socially distanced now, so we've got plenty of time on our hands. So maybe you just need a consultant (a specialist for the problem you are having to look at photos of your problem and provide some guidance — tell you which materials to buy, suggest some youtube videos of others performing the same task and so on). The professional will obviously be paid for this gig that they can do on the phone, while also having a full-time job. So, here's my question? Would you sign up for such a service (if you are a professional)? Would you use this service to find a consultant for a house chore that you can do on your own? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Sep 2020 01:08 AM PDT When a new user signs up to a small business as a new client. We wanted to send one text a day for 14 days to the client to check in on them. This is not a marketing text, there is no up sell involved, but a campaign to check on their wellness. It should ideally look like it was sent from the owners personal phone and replies should go to that phone as well. After the 2 weeks are up, the messages would then likely go out once a week. Is there a service that you like that you think would meet the criteria above? [link] [comments] |
Safe spot for people living in their cars Posted: 03 Sep 2020 12:59 AM PDT I had a crazy idea but what do you guys think? Buying land and making it safe for people who are living in their cars to park there all day and sleep. Public restrooms would be provided and picnic areas for people to eat. There are many times when people try to park at a grocery store because it is safer and get kicked out by security. I know a lot of people are out of jobs right now due to COVID and are living in their cars. This would be based in California since the prices for housing are RIDICULOUS. I don't even know if I would charge anyone to rent a spot but if I did it would be $5-$10 a month for a guaranteed spot? People deserve to feel safe and shouldn't be punished just for living in their cars. [link] [comments] |

Am I making the wrong decision giving up 50% for $300k Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:22 PM PDT Hey, i'm opening an optical store with my fiancé (she's managed one for the last 4 years taking it from 100k in revenue to 595k). I have about 50k saved up to put into the business but I want to go big with our dream location and store design/inventory. Neither of us are opticians. A good friend of mine is willing to invest the 300k more we'd need to start it. Is it wrong to give him 50% for that? My credit score wouldn't let us get the loan to do it besides majority of that is inventory which they don't give small business loans for (here at least). All we have is a sound business plan at this point and my 50k. I don't have other investors lined up immediately but could potentially. Is it wrong to give him 50% ? [link] [comments] |
Question about purchasing land with business . Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:24 PM PDT I was hoping to get some advice on a potential opportunity I have to purchase a business . The short version is that I am in the medical field looking to purchase a practice in a suburb/ more rural area about 35 minutes from a city in Florida . The practice is for sale along with several acres of land. I believe it may be an all or nothing deal. I'm not that interested in owning the excess land and it is valued at 3x the cost of the business . As a new business owner it seems foolish to purchase all this land that the business would have to service the debt on. Am I wrong to feel this way ? Or is this a good opportunity ? Also what steps should I take to make sure I'm not falling into a trap? I'd love any feedback I can get or even to be told what a better subreddit to ask this kind of question would be if I'm in the wrong place . [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:59 PM PDT Hi I'm brand new to reddit, I'm not really sure how it all works. However I'm from Australia and recently started my own business. It isn't quite off the ground yet but is an Indie clothes brand, bringing forth high quality garments made and produced here in Melbourne where I am from. I only have a small following on instagram at the moment, however if anyone wants to come along for the journey as my business gets off the ground then follow along at 249clothingcompany on instagram. I'm obviously not forcing anyone but if you'd like to it would mean a lot to me if you could. Thanks and I hope you have a nice day! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:25 PM PDT Hey guys so me and my Dad plan on both doing a gig job called Instacart and we want to combine our earnings at the end of the year and just have one tax bill. Is there anyway we can do this through a business entity just wanting to know. I'd prefer if I was the one doing our taxes at the end of the year so I'd like to have our income made from Instacart tied to the business where it comes out as one tax bill. My dad really doesn't understand self contracted work and taxes so I'd hope to find an answer that doesn't involve him having to do any tax filing and just be able to work while I handle the taxes for the business [link] [comments] |
How do you develop and store SOPs? Posted: 02 Sep 2020 02:52 PM PDT Hi there -- I've been running a pretty small business that I'm in the process of scaling up which means bringing in new people and wanting to quickly share with them institutional knowledge that I largely have. I'm thinking the best way of doing this is taking a lot of my notes and workflows and turning them into SOPs - my questions: 1 - Do you know of any good books/resources on developing or organizing SOPs? 2 - How do you share your SOPs? Google Docs? Evernote? Is there a knowledge-management suite you really like? Appreciate any help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:50 PM PDT I work in construction and sometimes I'm asked to got out of my direct area for a project. I've been charging based on how long I estimate the project will take as I am often asked to include my travel expenses in my bid for the projects. I usually have a pretty good idea on how long a project will take based on past experiences. I feel like there may be a better way to handle this however. I currently have a customer that is saying that my travel expenses should be prorated based on man-hours. I feel like this wouldn't be enough as I have to pay about $100 ($50/employee) a night per hotel room and $50 per employee for food. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Client filed for Chapter 11, owes us money Posted: 02 Sep 2020 10:54 AM PDT I'm in a small business, just 6 of us left at the moment. This is my first bankruptcy, what are the chances of getting paid? And how long is the process? They owe us around 10k and usually it wouldn't matter but with COVID every penny matters to keep the business going. What has been everyone's experience eight this? Any insight would be helpful. Forming an out of state business Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:16 PM PDT I live in PA. I want to form a business in VA and operate from PA. I will most likely won't have any income from my business for a year or so. I will spend my time networking, submitting bids until i land a contract. When I land a contract, I will move my principal office to VA where my business is originally registered and continue operations from there. My question is, Do I need to register my business as a foreign entity in PA? I will not be selling goods or services, I will only be pursuing opportunities. [link] [comments] |

Any nail studio/salons on here? How are you doing? Posted: 02 Sep 2020 04:45 PM PDT Helping a buddy see if we can get more bookings to his studio via digital marketing tactics. COVID obviously put a wrench in what was a rocking business. Had me curious if any salon owners lived in these parts. What channels have you found effective? Why do you think they are effective? Homeadvisor contacted me about my business Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:46 PM PDT Hello all! No idea if this is the right place for this so please delete if not allowed. So a few weeks ago I pulled the trigger and started a pressure washing business in Goldsboro NC. Had two jobs since then, but not much else. Taken some Facebook ads out and just been waiting for stuff to roll in. Well today I get a call from Homeadvisor saying they had a ton of pending jobs for pressure washing in my area, and that all they needed was me to do a background check and pay almost 300 for their membership and they would be passing the leads onto me(though I pay for each lead as well). The thing that seems sketchy about this was the guy first thought I was in Gainesville Florida(I'm In NC so a long way off). Just curious if anyone has had experiences similar and whether the service itself is worth it. Any advice would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Should I acquire legal help to establish an LLC? Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:01 AM PDT If so, where do I go about doing this? In short, I'm starting an online art brokerage. I had questions about which entity to establish so I read the book "the tax and legal playbook" by Mark Kohler. Consequently, Im pretty sure the best bet for me is an LLC. However, I have some more questions: should I speak to an attorney and or cpa before setting one up? How much is a fair rate for a service like that? Is legalzoom generally recommended here? I appreciate the advice in advance, y'all. Hope everyone is having a good day. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 02:08 PM PDT Hey everyone, I am setting up my chart of accounts in Wave. One of my services is reselling G Suite to my business clients. Basically, I have to preload funds into my reseller account. They only use PayPal, so there is a fee to load the funds. Once the funds are loaded (minus the fee), I let the money sit there until it's time to renew my client's G Suite services. What is the best way to handle this for accounting purposes? Would I use a Vendor Prepayments & Vendor Credits account or add a separate checking account for this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:52 PM PDT We have it in our handbook that part time employees don't receive paid holidays. We're closed on Monday for a paid holiday and the rest of the staff is full time and will not be working. For context, we're a service based company and all work remotely. My part time employee's usual schedule is M, T, W. Can they still work on Monday and keep their schedule or do I have to instruct them to shift their schedule? First time having a part time employee. Thank you for the help! [link] [comments] |
