I quit my job one month to focus on my pest control company - an update.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:37 PM PDT

I have just about eclipsed the one month mark since deciding to go full time with my pest control business.

I did a couple of things they say you're not supposed to do, but it has really worked out for me. 1. I left my full time job without enough income to cover bills (I did have a little saved up though) 2. I expanded my service area. In pest control, and other service businesses, the more condensed you are the better.

Fortunately I'm now bringing in enough to cover my bills. I live in and operate my business in Tuscaloosa, but I have roots in a more rural area west of Tuscaloosa. I have since started servicing that area too because of my connections and the competition is much worse.

My goal right now is to get my termite and mosquito certifications so I can start adding those services. I've been turning down business because I haven't been certified those areas. Covid has also closed the testing centers nearest me so I couldn't get certified when I wanted to earlier this year. By February I want to have both certifications.

I'm working harder than ever and sacrificing more than ever, but I'm definitely happier. Next week will be my busiest week since starting as I'll be adding 7-8 new recurring customers.

If you have any advice, please send it my way.

    I appreciate y'all.

Building a tech startup and raising funding with your co-founder/brother on a ventilator

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 11:21 AM PDT

Found this podcast to be super interesting. There is only 1 ep so far but in the first one the CEO tells the story of running his company in the middle of the pandemic, and how his brother/co-founder got infected with COVID and had to go on a ventilator! (he's okay now). This all happened while they were raising their series B funding. Lots of good discussion about mental health and parenting during this time as well.

Had to kick out a renter for the first time, I feel bad

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I guess I have to get it off my chest and at the same time I am looking for advise how to emotionally deal with it. I rent out a room for workshops. During daytime I rent it out for business workshops. In the evening there are dance classes. I had to fire a renter. He always was the problem child. While I heard from many people how good the course is he is giving.

His course was also the one I got the most complains for by neighbors, other course teachers and even my landlord.

At one point he disobeyed the Covid-regulations in my country in a way that could have cased very major damage to my business. Times and times I tried to communicate, minor things changed, but other things happened.

Long story short... Rationally I know it's the right thing to let him go. However talking to him was hard. I know, that the major part of his income is generated by the course he is giving in my place. I also like the guy... I feel bad. It's the first time I had to do this. Can you guys give me some advise on how to cope with that kind of stuff?

Would companies pay to get an appliance breakdown of their energy usage?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 07:40 AM PDT

Advantages would be that ALMOST all standby power would be eliminated because of the device(roughly 10% of electricity bill), better idea of energy usage that could also be shared with employees to make them more energy conscious which could possibly bring further reductions in the bill.

    Collaborative Product Idea

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 07:49 AM PDT

So I've found a problem that I'm passionate about trying to solve and thought I'd open it up to this community to add any ideas/help brainstorm.

Problem/Cause : It takes a lot of effort to check up on your friends' mental health and people tend to forget to do it even if they intend to.

My thought is that, if this process were much simpler and there was some way to remind the user to check up on their friends then it would get done alot more.

This concept obviously hits close to home for a lot of people and any work done in this field is always a huge positive.

Anyways if you guys have any ideas on what this should look like/what features this should have

-feel free to drop a comment.

Business strategy, marketing and social media consulting. I also do content creation and social media management.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:32 PM PDT

I'm launching a consulting business called Peek to Peak Consulting that will focus on helping small businesses, entrepreneurs and startups grow. I'm a pharmacist by trade with 12 years combined experience in strategy and innovation for a Fortune 500 company, as well as marketing, content creation, product ideation and social media management in the entrepreneurial and startup space.

I know there are large companies out there with deep pockets, but my heart has always been in the grind. I always found it thrilling to see an idea come to life and I'd love to connect with folks who are currently or were just recently bootstrapping their way to the next level.

Some things I've done so far:

What else could I do to increase my market reach? I should also add that I plan to do YouTube videos, so that's on the horizon. I'm curious to hear what other ideas you guys have.

Can anyone help me with marketing to e-commerce sellers?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 10:43 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I've recently co-launched a video production studio offering flat-rate premium product videos to e-commerce sellers.

So far, I'm not sure exactly of the best way to get in front of medium-large sized sellers aside from on e-commerce Facebook groups.

It's almost impossible to contact sellers through Amazon, other than through their customer service page, which is essentially pointless for trying to reach decision makers.

Other than that, I have been contacting the mid-large sized Shopify stores but with few results.

Does anyone have experience with this or is able to lend some words of advice?

    Hugely appreciate it if so!

    Cheers 🍻

App for helping you make everyday decisions and spark discussions through social polls!

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:19 PM PDT

I launched an app called WhichOne roughly three months ago to help people make everyday decisions. The process is fairly simple: You post two images*, one question, and let the world help you decide! We've had users use WhichOne to help decide their next Instagram pictures, different clothing accessories, start discussions, and more.

I come from a Software/Product background and have mostly done B2C in the past and it was much simpler for me because I knew I could spend $X amount on advertising and still be profitable. With a product/app like this, it's tougher because it becomes truly viable after a large number of users adapt it and we don't really make much money until then. And considering we're bootstrapped, it's a bit tough to spend a large amount on marketing.

I've tried to come up with more creative marketing ideas that are free (like leverage TikTok and try to create viral videos) but trying to find other avenues as well. Any thoughts? Anyone here who's had success with something like this?

    * We do plan on also launching text polls at some point in the near future.

A 17 year old who started a startup needs help

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 10:21 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

This can be long but I am sure it will be interesting. I am writing all of this from the core of my heart and I am sure somewhere out there, someone knowledgeable enough will read it and guide me accordingly. So a quick brief about myself, my name's Tanush, a 17 year old "Indian" (This is important) who just turned 18 a few days ago.

So I am a graphic designer, I have worked with 100s of brands since last 3 years and I am sure they all were unaware of my age and hired me out of my portfolio. I don't want to judge my own designs, but I get great response from the community when they see my designs.

Now India's a country where while being a high school student, generally they don't dream to start a business or work for businesses, and even if a student tries so, the community isn't much supportive, parents want their sons and daughters to study from a broken education system and live the rest of their lives working under a MNC after securing a degree. I won't blame the parents here, they just want their little ones to have a great and secured future rather than having a risky business but what this does is kills our creativity. Hence India generates one of the smartest minds and gets imported by abroad and foreign companies which is considered to be one of the greatest achievements here in India. ( India produces more engineers than US and China combined ) but they fail to generate creativity.

Now, my parents unlike the majority are very very special, they understand me and my perspective, they agree to my stupid thoughts and needs, they never force me to do anything which I don't want, in short they are very very supportive. Now obviously, in return I always want to fulfill any wish they have, I feel like, "Wow! They are so amazing, I have to fulfill any wish they have", now obviously nothing's perfect, their only wish in exchange for their supportive nature was for me to be good academically. And unfortunately, I wasn't ( though I am above average ), I just didn't wanted to study things which won't be valuable to me in the future ( Our curriculum is very very outdated ).
Still I have always felt very bad that they have always fulfilled all of my wishes and are extraordinary parents but I couldn't fulfill just one wish of theirs. So I thought, if I earn good enough, if I will earn extraordinarily enough in my age, they will be happy that their son is talented enough to earn at a age when students spend the time of their day playing games.

So as I loved computers, designing and solving problems with businesses, I used to read books which could increase my entrepreneurial and marketing knowledge (One of my favorite being the "Influence | The Psychology of Persuasion", I have completed over 25-30 courses in Udemy and I currently know to operate more than 6 Adobe Software. So everyday and night, I was wondering about problems which the world had, and ways to solve them (to me this is what business is). Opened several of them, and closed without seeing much profit and then one day I sat to re-evaluate myself and my mistakes and that is when I realized that I was not giving enough time for each of those businesses to flourish. I wasn't giving enough of my dedication to any of them. But often, I used to doubt myself, that really will a 17 year old be able to earn enough or start businesses, if this would be so easy, why people so experienced and aged would struggle to do so. But somewhere down my heart, I wanted to prove the age factor wrong.

Though at that time I also used to carry out part time and freelance jobs. So fortunately, I was little successful at earning, Getting $200 per month through freelance jobs which is a big deal here at the age of 16 was something which I was able to do, so they were satisfied that I am skillful enough to earn without being good academically. But I wanted to make them 'very proud' so I had bigger dreams, I wanted to buy my mom the dream house she ever wanted as soon as possible ( because I have this strange and weird fear of the death of my parents, and I want to achieve things as soon as possible at least so that they can see that they were successful at making their son a great and successful person and go very very happily and peacefully ), I wanted to be one of the most youngest entrepreneur the country has seen and don't worry, I am very very against of 'get rich quick schemes'. I believe in the hard work that goes into earning.

So, now you know the little background of mine, and back to current situation. So now, after evaluating all of my mistakes and understanding what I am excellent at, I opened a company which served Social Media Management services by making beautiful content 5-7 days a week with mesmerizing caption copy ( I did hire a talented copywriter for this and 2-3 more people for better management) and I posted our portfolio in one of the Facebook groups, and instantly few people approached from all around the world and I successfully closed two of them from Portland and Australia respectively, It's been 4 months, and we produced beautiful and engaging posts for them and even successfully carried some marketing campaigns as well. Through my experience of last 2 years, I had little knowledge about the Instagram algorithm as well, so I was able to successfully bump up their engagement rates as well. So now this so called company of mine is generating more than 600$ monthly, (though not much profit is left, but I don't want to secure profit right now). But something inside me was telling me, if I secured just 2 clients without any much effort and helped them with their problem of social presence then over the world, there must be so so so many companies who are in need of the same services, I searched through Fiverr and all, and people are charging hundreds of dollars for designs which are no where close to ours so I am pretty sure, I can scale this to immense figures.

Now the facebook group where I posted the portfolio have closed the option of promotions, and I can't seem to approach clients or get any leads. I am exploring LinkedIn, Fiverr and other sites. but still I feel like there is something which I am missing or doing wrong. Now I know there are a lot of people with immense knowledge here, if you did read all of the above. Thankyou so so much, I feel proud that I was able to make even a single person read this. but if there is anything, any advice which you feel should be given to me, please do so. Where should I look at, where should I get the clients, should I start with Paid ads? What should I do right now, even if you have anything to say apart from this, please do so. Any critique or comment will be valuable to me more than you know. Again Thankyou so so much for reading this through. Hope you have a wonderful day ahead.

How can Entrepreneurs like Elon Musk buy expensive cars that are worth millions and also mansions when he declines his salary?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:20 PM PDT

The only other option that I can see is to sell his shares but he hasn't done that as well. I know that he is a billionaire but that billion is not in liquid asset or cash. I do not see cash flow as well. He has amazing capital gains though. Capital gain and cash flow are entirely different so how do they afford it?

Does Elon get dividends from his investments? Is that the only way?

How To Generate Quality Leads - From a Founder at an MSSP

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:13 PM PDT

It took my firm 12 years to implement the "lead" recipe, but PPC and SEO have taken my firm to the next level. Just a glimpse at our projected numbers. We are on pace to meet with 400 CEOs this year. A huge accomplishment for my firm.

We are the number one organic Google search for over 30 keywords and our PPC ads come up on the first page. Our campaign continues to generate leads every day.

I personally set up the campaign back in 2012 and for three months, we paid Google $2,500 a month with zero leads. I was about to pull the plug at the end of week 12, but decided to give it another two weeks…on week 13, leads started streaming in daily, at times, 3-4 firms would contact us in one day. I will warn you, if you do not have a PPC expert in-house, you will be flushing money down the toilet.

    Here is my recipe to success if you plan to invest in PPC;

    1. Which vertical and service make you the most money? This is the first step a business should research before embarking into the PPC and SEO digital universe. The research will help you determine keywords, phrases, pain points, and challenges you solve for your clients. If you don't have access to metrics, sit down with your team, and start a brainstorming session. Which vertical makes you the most revenue, what problems do you solve, and then develop your value proposition.

    2. Research Specific keywords - Once you complete the exercise above. You will come up with a long list of keywords. These keywords(phrases) are what your prospective clients enter in a Google search bar when they require your service. I suggest you come up with at least 20 keywords. Google Keyword analysis tool will give you an accurate count on how many times those specific keywords are searched for each month.

    3. Create A & B Landing pages - This is an absolute must. You DO NOT point PPC ads to your website. You point them to your landing pages. Your PPC expert should know how to point to an A and a B LP. You can then determine which page converts the most visitors. These are metrics your firm needs to pay very close attention to.

    4. Write Laser-Focused Ads - You will need to get a marketing expert to write these for you. The ad must have a value proposition that hits a nerve with your prospect. They need to see your ad that shouts...WE SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM!!! WE ARE HERE TO SAVE THE DAY!!! The text in your add needs to speak volumes to your audience.

    5. Schedule – 24-7 or Biz Hours - This is up to you. I ran my ads during business hours M-F. I had a limited budget and was not going to blow my budget after hours.

    6. Select a specific Geography - This is important. If your firm prefers to only meet face to face with prospects, your campaign needs to be configured so businesses in your area locate you. I see many ads that do not follow this simple rule. You do not want your ad showing up in China. Your budget will be spent faster than a turkey gets cooked on Thanksgiving. Now, if you have a SaaS product, you can go global. If you have a tight budget, configure the campaign to run in specific states or cities.

    7. Optimizing the PPC tool – Get certified if you have time. I initially set up the campaign back in 2012. It was much easier to operate, plus I had time to research how to optimize the platform. Today is a different ball game. I suggest you hire a PPC firm. If you do not know one, I have a list of experts I can recommend.

    8. Measuring success – Learn Google Analytics inside and out. If you hire a PPC firm, you won't need to learn GA forwards and backward. They will go over all the metrics. However, if you have a tight budget, get to know this tool. It is invaluable to the success of your campaign.

    9. Remarketing strategy – Remarketing is a component that needs to be configured on your campaign. If you have done the research for a product and left the website for whatever reason. A day later you go on MSN.com and select a story that you find of interest...VOILA...the product you researched the day before pops up as an ad on that same screen. Not only do you get back in front of your audience, it costs pennies. I would also suggest you create a 15-second video so when your audience goes on YouTube, your video will come up.

    10. Keyword variants - A PPC expert will help with this, but if you decide to do this on your own. Google has a tool that helps with keyword variants.

    11. Negative keywords - This is a fun one...NOT...this was something I had to watch weekly. We are in the help desk support business. One of my keywords was "Help Desk Support", but I selected "broad search term". What does that mean? It means fun stuff, rainbows and unicorns. JK...it means if someone enters "help desk support at Verizon"...my ad would come up. The person entering the phrase automatically assumes the top ad is Verizon, they could care less what it says. So, not only do you pay for them selecting your ad, you get a call asking for support with their Verizon account. Ohhhhh, fun stuff. Every week, I would enter a new word to the negative keyword feature. Verizon, AT&T, Hulu...it was a long list, but the false positives will eventually be minimized. This is part of the optimization process.

    12. Videos - This is a must, but not a requirement. Read bullet point 9 if you skimmed over it. Videos can have a powerful message that static ads do not.

    13. Bidding - The bidding process for a specific keyword determines your position in the sponsored section. However, Google has a very interesting algorithm for this bidding process. Google ranks your ad, LP, and keywords chosen. If your Landing Page has a higher ranking than your competition, but your competition is bidding $100 dollars for a keyword... let's say you are bidding $5 for that same keyword...your ad will go above theirs. Why? It all comes down to your score. Google will determine your page is providing the information their client is looking for.

    14. Budget - This is important. DO NOT expect overnight success. This is a process and it will take anywhere from 4-12 weeks for your campaign to start generating leads. You need to run a campaign for at least 6 months to build momentum. You also need a healthy budget. If you are a service firm, 5K a month will get you about 20-40 appointments with CEOs.

    15. Set monthly/quarterly goals - This should be in place for all businesses. What do you expect to get out of PPC? Set your goals and your salespeople's expectations.

One more piece of information. 99% of my competition was not leveraging PPC and SEO to drive traffic to their site. The 1% that was...90% of them are failing with their PPC strategy.

Feel free to DM me. If you want to look me up on LinkedIn, I am at https://www.linkedin.com/in/itmanagedservices/. Happy to answer any questions.

Good luck to everyone, hope this helps clear up any questions you might have about PPC and SEO. I am the proof in the pudding :-)

Corona helped me give up college and help develop my dad's business.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:31 AM PDT

    Hello!

Just came here to talk for a while.

In the beginning of the year, I was just so ready to give up college but had no balls to do it. However, when Corona kicked in , right here in Portugal, I started having online classes and saw my dad getting worried about his business.

I never really had the balls to tell my family that I wanted to quit, but boy oh boy, in those first few weeks of quarantine, my instinct was to say goodbye college and go help my dad, who's been supporting me for the last 2 years without any need to.

So , I did it. No more anxiety, no more worries about the future. Whatever happens happens, but not before I got something to say about it.

I'm now working at marketing at his company, that produces acoustic panels and wall cladding in ceramics and wood. I fall asleep reading about marketing strategies and wake up reading about the products he sells. I also learned coding for simple website editing, and it's been so useful.

Giving up things that don't make you money, smarter or happier really helps, uh?

    Thinking about a new business

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:00 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I would consider myself an entrepreneur. I have two revenue streams. My third, an air bnb business essentially collapsed because of covid, but i kind of wanted to end the business anyway as it was getting too time consuming.

This leads me to my next thought, which i would like some feedback on. I am looking to possibly start a 3d scanning business. Does anyone have any knowledge on this business type? I am not a photographer but 3d scanning homes seems to be in demand. I live in a major city and if i made an extra 15-20k a year i would be set. I bet it may be saturated, but anything else i should know about this, that's not obvious? Thanks in advance.

Hi there and thanks for your help in advance.

I just joined a company, that uses the INITIALS@COMPANYNAME.COM format (ie at@thebiz.com)

His first email came through a job platform, so no worries, but the 2nd and 3rd, from his work email, went straight to my SPAM folder (I used Gmail). I filtered & labeled his email address, but:

    a) he said he sent me two emails I never received b) his last reply to an email I sent went to my spam folder

What could be the issue and how to fix it for this new company I'm going to join? Thanks for your help

Alibaba $1000 inventory purchase/shipment. Should I be concerned by the sellers actions?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 09:45 AM PDT

I have placed an order through Alibaba for items for my store at ~$1000CAD. It's my first one and I'm not sure if this is normal or I should be concerned. I understand the pandemic complicates things. The seller seems to be dragging things out and now it looks like they entered tracking information and voided it two days ago. I heard shady AliExpress sellers do that in some situations and it is a bad thing. This seller looks to be quite highly rated and is in the top 35% of sellers.

Today I asked the seller if there's a problem with the shipment and haven't heard back yet. Just thought I'd check with people who use them often! Thanks!

What do you think from this sequence of events? Thank you for your help!

September 1: Seller sends invoice including their Alibaba fees

September 5: Full payment cleared/received (through Alibaba trade assurance) Seller says will arrange shipment September 7. Contract says good will ship 12 days after cleared payment.

September 11: Seller reconfirms shipping address

September 15: Seller asks if a different shipment method is preferred which takes longer but includes taxes. I confirm. Seller says will ship that day.

September 16: Seller says shipment ready. Tracking number takes 3 days to obtain.

September 16: Seller requests to amend contract from 12 days to 15 days following cleared payment. I sign off on amendment.

September 21: Tracking number received. Tracking states: "Hong Kong Order Processed: Ready for UPS"

September 21: Tracking states: HK Voided Information Received

Today I asked the seller if there's a problem with the shipment and haven't heard back yet. Just thought I'd check with people who use them often! Thanks!
