    Police Vehicle hit my car

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:46 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, please let me know if there is another subreddit that is more appropriate. I am located in NY, a police vehicle hit my car turning left without turning on their turn signal. They took my insurance and I.D. and told me to come back tomorrow for the report. I was wondering what my next steps are. Do i need to contact my insurance (geico)? Do i need to file a report with the city? I am also worried that the police report is going to misrepresent what had happened but i do have video footage of what occurred. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Are we covered for damages from storm? (NY)

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:10 AM PDT

My father-in-law passed away and my wife is listed as executor in his will. Her mother pre-deceased her father by 2 years. When he passed away, we contacted the insurance company and let them know. They asked about his wife, and we informed them that she had also died.

Fast forward months later... we had a storm here in New York. There was damage to the house. The insurance company somehow does not have it down that her dad died. We have been making payments, but thought it was under "the estate of". They want to send money to fix the house.... but obviously we can't cash that check.

Will we be able to somehow get the money from this policy to fix the house? From what I read online, it is not transferable.

Should I be looking for another job?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:22 PM PDT

Backstory: I am an Auto desk adjuster. We work in a team environment and deal with anywhere between 20-50 insureds and/or claims each day.

This insured (client) has his parked, unoccupied vehicle hit by a third party. He calls in and advises that the rear was damaged, either the insured or the adjuster (he's a new employee took the call) either missed noting that the front was also damaged.

The senior appraiser said that the front is not related to the loss and most likely a hit and run claim.

The insured claimed that his vehicle was not drivable, got into a rental and decided to drop off his car to the shop almost 1 week after getting the rental despite being advised his coverage transferred to the rental.

The insured was arguing with many of my coworkers. He eventually decided to open up a second claim for the front damage, because he claims we are 'incompetent'.

So fast forward he wants to get a police report ( I am assuming for the front damage) from the local police station and asks the shop against our authority to hold off on repairs.

The shop emails us back a few days later and advised that the insured decided not to get the police report and they want to do the teardown estimate.

So, I tell them to proceed with the teardown of the rear damages. However, I did not tell them to start repairs or lift the hold that insured requested. This was done to reduce the extra rental days to teardown once the insured gave his go ahead.

The shop assumed that they can start and ends up repairing the car. Maybe, I wasnt clear, I didnt say do the estimate only?

The insured is now upset and asked who told the shop to start repairs. And says that we ignored him.

Long story short, I read the notes. The third party looks like they wanted pay for the repairs. Its a $1000 repair total. Also, SIU got assigned after repairs were paid and said that it was fishy and we shouldnt have paid for the repairs.

Have only been at the company for 3 years. And its my first job after college, quite stressed right now. Terrified of losing my job, as I am the only one at home who is stable jobwise, and I know this insured will not let this go. I could barely sleep over the weekend because of this issue.

Auto insurance payout amount in event of car getting totaled

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:23 AM PDT

Just curious how insurance companies determine the payout amount in the event of a total loss. Do they use the NADA value for clean/average trade-in? KBB? A combination or something completely different?

Trying to decide if I want to add GAP coverage to my new car's policy ($140/yr), but don't want to do it if my loan amount is less than the cars value as it would render the GAP coverage useless.

    Thanks!

    Car insurance

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:42 AM PDT

First time posting in here so correct me if this isn't the place for it!

I am looking to purchase insurance and got a quote online. Now the quote in question is with an insurance company (for anonymity we will call it "Smith Insurance") who I was with last year but through a broker. So when doing the quote online you can get a discount if you have a previous policy so I put in my current policy number and the price went down. I rang them up to confirm and the woman confirmed the price and said she'd call me back to purchase it, but never did.

So I rang them today to purchase it only to be told the price is gone up as the discount isn't valid because it was through a broker. But if I do it online, it brings me back to my original cheaper price as it recognises it as a valid policy.

My question is: would I be asked to pay the difference at a later stage if I purchase it online?

What happens if your stock/assets are underinsured?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:29 AM PDT

Say, you have 10 million worth of assets in plant A, and take insurance for 10 million. Then you expand plant A and add assets for 10 million more. Now there is 20 million worth of assets in plant A.

Now there is a fire and you lose 10 million worth of assets at plant A, will I be eligible for 10 million compensation?

Or will the insurance company come and try to find the 10 million assets that were originally present at the location (assuming it is general insurance for plant at various sites and not specific machinery items)

Or will I get paid only 50% ie, 5 million because my total insurance was only 50% of total value at the location and hence only 50% of my loss will be compensated?

Also any tips/format ideas on maintaining a register for insurance contracts held by the company?

Question on life insurance and the concept of "insurable interest"

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:46 PM PDT

From what little I remember when I was briefly licensed to sell life insurance close to 20 years ago, I know that the person taking out the policy has to have an insurable interest. For instance, I couldn't just buy a policy on Joe Blow down the street whom I have no relationship with.

My mother and father got divorced 8 years ago. He has a much higher income and pays alimony. She has a 15 year term policy on him that will expire next month. There is no possibility of converting this policy to whole at a lower payout. So the question is does she have a sufficient insurable interest to take out another policy on him even though there is going to be no cooperation from him? They are both in their mid-60's. I'm afraid all she is going to get is one of those like $25K policies, no medical exam (like those advertised on TV). I don't even know if local agents write these types. Per their divorce decree, he was required to maintain a whole life policy @ a certain value but we are almost certain that he never did this.

Should I cancel my collision claim? (NJ)

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:11 PM PDT

    Hello,

First off, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask.

I was involved in a hit and run motorcycle accident. I luckily suffered no serious injuries (cuts and scrapes, thanks to gear), and my bike fared fairly well, but a few things are bent and scratched. The police were unable to locate the car driver. I wasn't at fault.

I started a claim, and initial estimates for the repair came out to around $1300, gear came out to around $350, so ~$1650 . This is based on images by the insurance company. The shop said they found more stuff that'll add to that cost. This is to get my bike back to like new condition.

    My deductible is $500.

I'm by no means an expert, but I'd estimate to get my bike back to running condition, ignoring cosmetics, it would cost around $700 (lots of plastic bits).

Given this, I have a few questions:

    1) Should I expect my insurance rates to go up if I follow through with the claim (I'd assume yes). Any idea how much?

    2) If I cancel my claim, and just pay out of pocket, will my insurance rates still go up?

This is my first accident ever, I'm going to call my claims handler tomorrow but just wanted to get Reddit's thoughts, any help would be appreciated!!!

Can you use your own tow service

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:43 PM PDT

I have Geico and my car battery went dead. I filed an emergency road side assistance claim because nobody at the gas station where my car died, had jumper cables. They found a tow truck provider and they told me it was gonna be a 2hr and 45min wait until the tow could get to me. I looked up tow services in my area and found that were near me and I called them and asked if they would bill Geico and they said they didn't know. Has anybody ever used their own provider before for roadside assistance?

    Car Insurance for New Driver

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:20 PM PDT

Im about to finance a car in New York (around Westchester) and I'm ready to pay for it but the only thing that is really bothering me is the car insurance since I'm getting multiple estimated quotes everywhere. Im a completely new driver, I am 20 years old about to be 21 in the end of October (I know, I got my license late) and Im looking to buy a 2018 Honda Civic EX with 16k miles on it. Do you guys have any idea on what maybe an estimate on my insurance would be? Just looking for a decent range on a estimate. Thanks!

I have been getting charged continuously from my health benefit plan since I ended my contract with my previous employer

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:51 PM PDT

I'm in need of advice, I was under the health benefits plan Leslie & Associates Benefit Alliance while I was with my previous employer. I have terminated my contact with my previous employer since the beginning of the year and I have been under a new employer and benefit plan since then. I just discovered I have still been getting charged bi-monthly from leslie & associates. I just looked it up and it states that my employer termination will not cancel the benefits plan.

I know I messed up heavily by not seeing the fine print but is there anyway I can fight this or get a refund? I have lost thousands of dollars on paying for insurance I do not even use. Any advice is appreciated.

    Need advice about car insurance.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:53 AM PDT

So to start. I started driving 2 1/2 years ago and the car was both registered and under my uncles name in the insurance policy. He recently signed Over the title to me and I went and paid for the car. The car is now in my name but I'm still under his insurance plan. So according to insurance the car is under his name still but it's actually not. I know, that probably sounds confusing. My question is, is that a type of insurance fraud, or like if i got into an accident do I still technically have insurance? Could I just call and change who the car is registered to or do I have to change the whole plan. I know I need to get my own insurance plan but I'm strapped for cash right now because of covid and I can't afford a deposit to put the insurance in my name. That's definitely the goal but I'm worried about the short term.

Need advice on hail damage claim

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:43 AM PDT

So maybe 16-18 months ago (I don't remember the exact date), my vehicle got hail damage. The marks were pretty small (no paint chipped), but they are all over the roof and hood of the car. They are barely visible unless you are looking at them closely in the right angle. It has always been on my list of something to get fixed but I never thought it was that urgent, other more important stuff, car and otherwise, always popped up. I figure it was just a matter of someone using a tool to pop out the dents, I figured this was maybe a few hundred dollars worth of labor, and if I did it, I would just pay out of pocket. I did not submit a claim at the time.

Fast forward to the last time I got my oil changed a couple weeks ago, I finally asked the mechanic if it was something they could do. They said no but referred me to a body shop. Body shop came out to my house and gave me a free estimate. I was completely surprised that the estimate was several thousand dollars. They said they needed to replace the hood. I figure at this point maybe insurance does need to get involved.

So I call my insurance agent and say I have hail damage and am interested in submitting a claim. She asked when the damage occurred and I say I honestly don't remember. She said "there was a big storm on X date, I will put that down." I figure all is well at the time.

I start feeling a little uneasy the more I think about this. The damage, while it is real (and I was insured by the same insurance company at the time, I have been a long time customer, and hardly ever submit a claim), did not occur on the date of the claim. To me, this could be fraud, and I want no part of that. So I call the insurance company and tell them I just want to withdraw the claim. The reason I give is that I don't want my premiums to go up, and I will live with the cosmetic damage. They say no problem, we will withdraw it. In my mind, that is the end of that.

I get a call a couple days later and the claims representative says since it is an act of God my premiums will NOT go up, and suggests I pursue the claim. I said I will think about it.

I don't know what to do. The reason I gave for withdrawing the claim is no longer valid. I feel like I am too far along to admit the date of the claim is incorrect. I don't want to get in trouble. What do people recommend?

Insurance Nor Covering Hit & Run Rental

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:16 PM PDT

My car endured a hit and run, leaving it undrivable. We got the guy, but his insurance is waiting to claim liability. Also, the car is in my mom's name, but I'm an authorized driver and live in a city 4 hours away. The insurance company will only cover the rental costs if my mom gets the rental, not me. What should I do? I need a car to get to work each day, and I can't afford the cost of a rental myself. I'm 23. I don't feel it's right that I shouldn't be reimbursed.

    I'm in Savannah, GA.

Homeowners claim— what else can I do?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:56 PM PDT

I think we're being jerked around by insurance and from what I'm reading that's not surprising behavior from an adjuster... but maybe someone with experience can shed some light or gibe some pointers on how to move forward.

Our dishwasher leaked into the kitchen/dining area and ruined both floors as well as our lower cabinets. Restoration company came out and ripped out our kitchen floor and a few planks of our dining room floor. They also removed our dishwasher and put it in the garage. They left the cabinets per our insurance adjuster so they wouldn't have to pay for "loss of use" and left our kitchen haphazardly tented with four or five blowers and a dehumidifier. The kitchen was completely unusable for 3 days while the blowers were in there. They cracked our ceiling with their tent poles. Came and got their tent and fans, billed insurance for $3700, and didn't hear from anyone for a week. Our kitchen has had no dishwasher, been down to subfloors, and there's two areas in the floor where there's exposed wires just hanging out of the floor for over two weeks now. I've obviously made triple sure that the breakers to those wires are off, and I've been pulling staples out of the floors as our three children keep finding them with their tiny feet.

We just got our settlement proposal from insurance for $11k. We were told during the restoration process that our uppers would be included in the overall price and last minute were told we don't need them. I'm under the impression that they absolutely should be covered since everything needs to match so as to not devalue the house. That also seems extremely low to renovate an entire kitchen and dining room. I looked closely at each portion of the estimate... there's about $3800 for flooring which is accurate. $280 for painting about 2,000sqft of wall space which LOL. And then they allotted 6k total for the entire kitchen. That was paint, any drywall, trim, cabinets, removing and reinstalling all the appliances, countertops... whatever else they put in there. But 6k. Come on. That's hardly enough for just lower cabinets, forget everything else. When our adjuster called us with the proposal I said that seems grossly underestimated and informed him I'd be having our contractor write it all up to get an actual cost and scope of the project. I have hope that our contractor will work with us to get this number up since he obviously wants to make some money on the job and we all want it done well, no cutting corners to make 6k pay for an entire kitchen remodel and reflooring 3/4 of our house. He comes Wednesday to go over everything and write it all up. My concern is that our adjuster is going to give us a hard time about giving more money to cover the project.

ALSO, we pay for loss of use insurance, we have $54k coverage in loss of use. They're saying we can't use it right now because our kitchen is "functional" until the cabinets are removed. We're walking on subfloors, the dudes left all the staples and wires hanging out, so there's safety and electrical hazards and we have young children. When it happened we pulled everything out of our soaked cabinets and put it away in boxes, and we're not putting anything back in the cabinets just to have to box it up again when the cabinets get ripped out. Its been two weeks, I haven't been nagging or annoying, I've only called maybe four times over the last two weeks and only two of those conversations had a mention of loss of use which he quickly shut down. So what can I do? The specific language in our policy states that when a peril impacts our standard of living we are entitled to utilize our loss of use insurance. Well we're used to having floors without staples, no electrical wires left exposed through the floor, and not to be too picky but a dishwasher would be nice. Does this really not qualify as loss of use?

TLDR; Dishwasher caused lots of damage, I filed a claim. Insurance came back with low estimate and doesn't want to pay for loss of use. What can I do to get loss of use covered, and how can I ensure the contractor secures more funds for the project?

    Payments on car and insurance

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:05 PM PDT

So I need another car very soon and I'll be making payments on it. I'm worried about insurance being so high because I'll be making payments on it. I'd go from paying 93/mo liability to about 267 and that's something I would barely be able to afford. Is there ways around this? Do u have to have full coverage if you're getting a used car while making payments? Are there ways around this?

Renters Insurance - Details on making an Inventory Claim

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:45 AM PDT

    Thanks for reading this post

(AZ) An 550sqft apartment I rented has caught on fire last month, and there was extensive damage on one side of the apartment. In the process of making an inventory list, I'm not sure how detailed I can be, or if I should write down items that was not in the direct area of the fire damage, but still smells like smoke.

Would listing every bottle of seasoning, or coffee mugs be too petty? Is it reasonable to ask for compensation for cast iron pots? There are some appliances that was soaked in the water because of the fire, and I don't feel safe using it. I could wash my clothing, but fiberglass insulation was exposed, and I don't want to wear clothes that may be covered in it.

I am worried that this can be seen as deceitful if I am claiming items that was in another room.

I moved from FL to CA about 2 weeks ago. Does this qualify me to change my health insurance? Do I go thru work or my insurance company?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:00 AM PDT

    Hi all,

Couple weeks ago moved from FL to CA. Since the company is based in CA only, I apparently have new choices of health insurance. Right now I have a high deductible plan, but I plan on trying to start therapy and getting some medical issues looked into, so I want to switch to a higher premium plan the company offers with small co-pays per visit and no deductible.

Anyways, I guess I have a few questions

    1. Would this qualify me to change insurances now?

    2. Would I go thru my health insurance (United Healthcare), or my HR folks at work?

    3. Is it a pain in the ass? Open enrollment is in November for January, I think, so if it's a pain in the butt I'll wait a few months since it's nothing urgent or an emergency.

    Out-of-network for behavioral claims?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:11 AM PDT

Hello, I need some help figuring out what to do about a number of claims with my therapist.

This is in Massachusetts. I have United healthcare. I can get the specific plan name if that's necessary.

I recently (in June) started a new job and got new health insurance (United) as a result of that. Prior to enrolling in any of the plans, I called United to determine if my therapist was in-network or out-of-network. I was told that he was in-network. I do not have a call reference ID for this call. I chose a health plan with no out-of-network benefit because I understood that all my providers were in-network, and I wanted to choose the cheapest option.

Later, when he made a claim, it was denied as he is apparently out-of-network. It took a lot of calling for me to finally understand, behavioral claims are routed to Optum, where he is out-of-network. But medical claims stay at United, where he is in network.

However, he is a psychiatrist, and they consider psychiatry to be behavioral coverage rather than medical.

They told me that if he were to make the claims using medical codes, they would go through just fine (I have a call reference ID for that). But he doesn't understand the difference between medical and behavioral codes. I don't understand that either, but I don't want to have to pay for my appointments with him out-of-pocket.

I've received a new job offer with better insurance, and will likely accept it. But I still have to figure out what to do about the past three months of claims. If anyone has advice or ideas, I would really appreciate it. It could save me a lot of money.
