Pest Control Company. It's been a month since I quit my job.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:35 PM PDT

I have just about eclipsed the one month mark since deciding to go full time with my pest control business.

I did a couple of things they say you're not supposed to do, but it has really worked out for me. 1. I left my full time job without enough income to cover bills (I did have a little saved up though) 2. I expanded my service area. In pest control, and other service businesses, the more condensed you are the better.

Fortunately I'm now bringing in enough to cover my bills. I live in and operate my business in Tuscaloosa, but I have roots in a more rural area west of Tuscaloosa. I have since started servicing that area too because of my connections and the competition is much worse.

My goal right now is to get my termite and mosquito certifications so I can start adding those services. I've been turning down business because I haven't been certified those areas. Covid has also closed the testing centers nearest me so I couldn't get certified when I wanted to earlier this year. By February I want to have both certifications.

I'm working harder than ever and sacrificing more than ever, but I'm definitely happier. Next week will be my busiest week since starting as I'll be adding 7-8 new recurring customers.

If you have any advice, please send it my way.

    I appreciate y'all.

How many times have you guys been sued for no reason?

Just curious about your years in business and the number of frivolous lawsuits that have come your way? Also the industry that your business is involved in would help to.

Someone is interested in buying my business, looking for advice assessing what it's worth.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:20 AM PDT

I have someone interested in purchasing my 17 year old, small IT business. We have averaged about $170,000 in total revenue over the last 3 years. Is there a proper method to value it that someone can share with me? Almost all of the revenue is from billable labor hours and monthly managed services. I would appreciate any wisdom that can be shared with me. Thank you.

Starting an online clothing store in Georgia

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 04:42 AM PDT

I am starting an online clothing store. I want to get all my ducks in a row legally. I am so confused though as to what exactly I need. I keep reading that I need a seller's permit but I can not find it. Or is a seller's permit the same as business registration on the tax center. I am so new to this. I want to learn as much as I can and start out right so I'm not having to cover my butt later. Thank you.

Looking to Provide Health Insurance to Temporary and Contract Employees

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:38 AM PDT

A client has requested my company to provide them with a few contractors (essentially acting as a staffing agency) and I would like to provide health insurance to each contractor and understand my options in doing so. My company currently has less than 25 employees and our current insurance broker has suggested forming a separate entity to create a new health insurance policy solely for the contractors due to our current plan's network not being accessible in one of the states the contractors will be working in (Contractors will be based in the following states: Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia). The majority of these contractors will likely stay within each role for approximately 6-9 months, however, at least two will have projects lasting approximately 18-24 months. Any insight, direction, or help with how to tackle this request would be greatly appreciated.

    REVOLUTIONARY New Financial Service Business

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:15 AM PDT

Okay, so maybe a slight exaggeration, but it's the same flavour.

Background: I've worked my family business for 4/5 years turning it from a 400k to £2.2m turnover. Lots of learning on the job! During this fantastic growth period, I had to learn how to keep control of the companies finances on the fly and stop them spiralling out of control. It's been a wild ride, but what I've ended up with is a cash-flow and profit management system that is incredibly effective.

My journey with this company is at its end. The family is taken care of and I'm ready to go solo. I'll be reproducing this cash-flow and profit management system for tradesman as a service - the customer base is the same as the family business.

The problem: My question is how would you position yourself in the market? It's not a bookkeeping service, but rather a bespoke cash management system. I'm not entirely sure what angle to come at this from in terms of marketing message and market position.

EDIT: for clarity - the new business is providing cash-flow and profitability advice via a bespoke cash-flow model that I build. I'd build out the model/spreadsheet, and then work with the client to reduce unnecessary expenses and increase profitability. It's a financial service which is more consulting than it is bookkeeping.

I'd love to back and forth this with some big brains if you have the time 🤓

I’m not making any site sells at all. But plenty of in person sales, what gives?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:48 PM PDT

I run a coloring book/ art supplies business, that I've been working on since about June. But I haven't made a single sale on the site (though I haven't made many page/site views either to be fair) but my family member sells them at their job and has made me at least 30 sales. What gives? Is the site just not good https://www.interstellartkids.com or does it just come with getting more views? Any pointers would be appreciated

Accidental Solopreneur - What should I expense?

Due to COVID I'm now a 1099 contractor, then got a 2nd contract, and now I'm in business...I guess?

I'm hoping to find full time work again, but it could be a while so I'm exploring what it might be like to do this as a small business. How can I maximize being a sole proprietor in terms of expenses and taxes? I do IT work from my home office and have no travel or material costs.

Llc as S Corp tax question

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 11:44 PM PDT

Hello all. I just created an LLC to manage my side gig work in IT consulting. I currently have about $130k in contracts coming in this year. Would it be beneficial to file to be taxed as an S corp vs just a sole proprietor? I've read a ton here and elsewhere but still mega confused. I know talking to CPA is best, but just looking for any pro tips/guidance you would be willing to share. Thanks in advance.

Ps Have a full time salary job W2 of about 130k as well. We file married jointly too (if that matters).

Step-dad looking to pursue a franchise. I'm not sure how to help him / get through to him about running a business. Any advice?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 09:35 PM PDT

So my stepdad [52] was laid off due to the tanking airline industry. He's a smart guy, designed commercial engines, and he's always wanted to be his own boss. He sees recent events as his chance to buy a franchise and do that.

Now I'm all for that entrepreneur spirit, but he isn't even sure what he wants to do. Apparently he's talking to some kind of coach that "helps entrepreneurs find their industry". I highly suspect this person is full of sh*t, especially because my mom won't tell me how much they pay him.

Now I went to school for accounting and have experience with startups and analyzing business decisions to open new product lines or subsidiaries, but my stepdad will only see me as the twerpy eight year old he had to help raise, so my advice falls on deaf ears.

I know buying a franchise is like buying a job and even the best of scenarios don't make that much money at first. He's the sole breadwinner and he's low on savings, so I don't think this is a viable option right now, especially when he doesn't know what he wants to do. So I'm trying to think of another option I could try and steer him towards and I'd appreciate any advice you guys have on the subject?

My Company's List of Physical Tools/Hardware

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:40 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, my previous post listing all the useful free software tools I use for my sporting goods design startup seemed to be helpful, so I wanted to make a similar list of the physical hardware/tools that I purchased and believe to be valuable for my business. I worked in industry as a mechanical engineer for several years before starting my business, so a lot of these tools are engineering-related.

    1. FDM 3D printer ($330)
    2. Resin (MSLA) 3D printer and ($300)
    3. Engraving/lightweight CNC machine ($250)
    4. Embroidary/Sewing machine ($370)
    5. Soldering and reflow station ($80)
    6. Soldering "helping hands" ($25)
    7. Electric hot plate ($15)
    8. Photography light box ($27)
    9. Electric smoker (for powder coating) ($175)
    10. Air compressor ($80)
    11. Drill press ($105)
    12. Miniature scale ($13)
    13. Hanging scale ($10)

I'd be happy to answer any questions about how these tools are used/applied in my business.

Buying a Pizza Franchise straight out of university?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 08:39 PM PDT

Are there any franchises that are actually worth buying and that generate decent cash flow.

Just curious, since I hear a lot of people say that buying a franchise is like buying a job and you only make 40k-50k a year.

Does anybody have experience with buying a Pizza Franchise?

My cousin bought a franchise straight out of university with a business loan at 22. He is now 24 and has 4 franchise and makes 320k yearly from the franchise and he is completely hands off.

Was wondering if this type of approach is actually possible or just luck. did my cousin get lucky? Because I would be interested in doing something similar.

Ideally after getting my Accounting degree I would like to buy a pizza franchise as a step into business. Or would I be better off with starting a bookkeeping firm instead?

A lot of people tell me that the capital that will be used to buy the franchise would better used to start a bookkeeping firm since it would require half the capital and I could probably make more with bookkeeping.

Not Sure Where to Go Next

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 03:33 PM PDT

I run an E-commerce site with a 3d printer. I have placeholders all set up (Cali-cats, fidget spinner, etc.). Thing is, I'm not sure what I want to sell. I went over to r/Nerf to see if there would be any interest in a thing like a custom nerf mod kit. The post was removed for selling stuff. Bruh. I have also thought about a desktop navy section. Ideas anyone?

Anybody here do own a Glass Window Installation Business Shower/Sliding Doors Included?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:48 PM PDT

I'm considering starting a business in this industry. I'm exiting the army in a year and will also have my MSc Business by the time I separate. After being in I feel very strongly about working for anyone else or being told what to do at this point.

My dad owned a glass glazing business and I worked as his journeyman for about 10 years. I've been putting a lot of thought into recession proof business models and even though I have a degree I don't consider myself above any type of work that's profitable and makes money.

Any business owners in this niche have any thoughts or comments about their business or the industry and market out look please share.

Project Management App - But not for teams

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:51 PM PDT

Hey all, hoping someone has some experience with this.

Brick and Mortar, 6 employees. Each employee has their own workload and projects. We've outgrown our current project management tool (Google Keep, hey it's worked until now). Each employee has 12 projects going at one time. Different daily goals that need to be completed that day and overall progress for the life of the project.

I've looked into Trello, Asana, Monday, etc. They seem like they WOULD work, but are too feature rich and complicated for our needs. They are all very team based, which I don't need. Bob does all the work on his projects. He buys the parts, assemble the widget, tests the widget, contacts the customer about the widget and no one else is ever involved.

Me and the manager need to see his project status and add tasks, but multiple people aren't ever involved in actually completing Bob's projects. Fighting with the "team" aspects of the above services is what pushed me away from them.

Is there a more stripped down, simpler project management tool that you have used that would do what I need? Or are one of the above mentioned services a good fit and I'm just not seeing it?

We also use Slack heavily so a good integration there would be a bonus.
