Posted: 06 Sep 2020 04:43 AM PDT As the title suggests, I received an email this morning saying PennyMac sent my loan to collections for late payments. I've never missed a single one. I was fortunate to not have been affected by COVID in terms of employment so I chose to continue making payments. As a result, my TransUnion Credit Score dropped a ridiculous 130 points. I'm planning on filing a dispute, but was curious if anyone had any experience fighting something similar and what should I expect. Any tips on what to have prepared, or anything to send in would be appreciated Cheers [link] [comments] |
My mom just passed away and had some big debts. What happens now? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:06 AM PDT All she has to my understanding was a small life insurance policy and the house. What can I expect to happen? Edit: I live in NJ. [link] [comments] |
would you sell a house to downsize to a condo? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:04 PM PDT Right now I live in a 4 bedroom house by myself. I was going to get married 4 years ago but unfortunately things did not work out well. As a single person I question the need for this house if it's just me. The house value is $430K and I owe $350K. Condos go around $150-$170K here. I feel like this house is overkill and would rather save the money that would obviously go to the house. I do value my privacy though. that's the one thing I'm afraid of with the condo is having noisy neighbors. [link] [comments] |
Things to look out for in the current mortgage refinance climate Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:55 AM PDT Like many of you, I recently set out to refi because the rates are so low. We're an easy case -- excellent credit and equity in the house, not a jumbo loan. Should be easy! But three months into the process the loan has not closed yet :( Let me recount some lessons learned:
It's a frenzied market for mortgages right now and that has skewed the market. You can get a great rate if you look hard and find the right lender and/or broker and drive the process carefully. But there are many ways to waste your time too and some sketchy practices at play right now. Good luck. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2020 12:37 AM PDT My wife and I (US-Oregon based) have often discussed trying to relocate to a different country (for a number of reasons) but honestly, neither of us really understands the consequences of making that move. Some of it is easy to understand, we need to find jobs willing to sponsor visa's for us in a nation we want to live in. I get that much. When it comes to finances though I'm not sure what should be expected. All of our debt is in USD (student loans mostly) do we just pay an exchange fee on that? I know US expats are expected to pay US income tax but I don't know how that gets reported/works. I'm sure there are other things I'm completely oblivious to so I'm hoping some of you can share some insight. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
When It Rains, It Pours: Advise Please! Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:06 AM PDT Background: I'm a 27 yr old Event Coordinator in NJ that lost my 2 jobs and multiple gigs due to COVID. I was born with cancer around my spine, which made be Paraplegic. Because of my loss of job(s), I also lost my health insurance through my employer on top of everything else. My immune system sucks, so I've been trying to look into jobs that I can do from home, and have actively been searching. I even found an Event Booking job from home, but (shocker. lol) nobody is booking events and the commission was basically nonexistent. I've been selling / flipping on various sites (Poshmark, Mercari, EBay, etc), and that's been keeping my bills paid mostly during the pandemic, so that's good! My New Spontaneous Problems:
I'm barely making it as it is, and I'm not sure I can go on unemployment because of my side-hustle. I could probably go on disability, but I worked SO hard to be financially dependent and get off of Disability SSI. I want to avoid it if I can. There is absolutely no way I can cover these two major expenses the way things are going now. I would appreciate any suggestions / tips / words of encouragement. Hell, I'll even just take a virtual hug at this point. [link] [comments] |
Somebody offered to pay off my wife's debt Posted: 06 Sep 2020 11:12 AM PDT Credit Card Healing LLC is offering to pay off my wife's debt and the lady she is dealing with is going to pay her enrollment fee. I have been looking online and haven't found much of anything on them. I did find their website though. I'm a Firm believer in "If it sounds too good to be true than it probably is" but I really don't want to miss out on something that actually does what they say they are supposed to do. Any info on them or advice would be nice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:15 PM PDT During COVID my family business was forced to close down. I was a bartender and the manager at our restaurant. We made the decision to shut down permanently and I started working full time at my other job making far less money. Now, after draining my savings to make ends meet, I can't afford my credit card bills and other miscellaneous bills and payments. Are there any options that can help me get caught up on past due bills and help me work toward getting my debt back in line? [link] [comments] |
Found out my dad has a terminal illness, neither dad or mom know what to do about dads debts Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:44 PM PDT My dad found out he has a terminal illness. It's been hard for everyone, but I'm trying to think ahead about what they can do to protect assets after he passes. He has a few years left, but they don't make enough to pay off their debt before he passes. Between credit cards and medical debt, most of the life insurance will be gone. How can I help them protect assets like vehicles and the house from debt collectors? Could they just transfer every thing into my moms name? Edit: details They are legally married House is in both names, most of the cars are in my dads name, but only one of them has payments left. They are in North Carolina. [link] [comments] |
I know I'm about to get served Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:50 PM PDT Today my dad called me telling me a county sheriff stopped by his house asking if I was there. Obviously I wasn't there because I don't live there but the deputy I guess was trying to serve court papers about a medical bill. I went to the ER last year and thought I payed everything but I guess not. My dad went through his mail and found that this debt collector has sent him letters and that I owe 800 dollars. I definitely have the money. Now that there was an attempt to serve me what is my next step? Do I just call up and pay the bill or is this now out of my hands? [link] [comments] |
Should I be worried the money I received is stolen or counterfeit? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 04:55 PM PDT I am probably just being an over concerned son here but I can't stop worrying. My parents just sold an old car to a guy on Facebook marketplace and received $900 cash. There was recently a bank robbery in our area (don't live in a big city) which has me concerned about the way the bank notes look. First of all, the guy paid with 18 $50 notes and the notes are all consecutive serial numbers. I know that banks often give out notes with consecutive serial numbers, however these bills felt absolutely brand new and literally were sticking together from being so new and crisp yet there is a large ink stain along the top of the stack as if they were in a pile while stained with something. This seemed weird to me that they could be in such amazing condition but have been stained which is making me worry an exploding dye pack went off during a bank robbery and the guy is giving us the stolen currency. I know this is probably a complete over reaction but I wanted to get others opinions on it. TL;DR : Parents sold car to guy who paid with suspicious bills that were in mint condition yet all had ink stain making me think he robbed a bank. [link] [comments] |
How high of a credit limit can I apply for with the Amex propel card through Wells Fargo ? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:50 PM PDT Been a customer for 10 years and have great credit. Anyone have any clue how much I can apply for? edit - I've had my starter card for 6 years with a credit line of 5k looking to get my second card and curious how high of a credit limit I should ask for 10k? Maybe? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:14 AM PDT It looks legit. It's only for $24. My name and address are correct. The invoice and check are dated from the end of August but I haven't shopped at HD since June. My last online order was delivered on June 19. The subtotal of this online purchase was 24.97 before taxes. But when I order I only use my initials though my credit card does have my full name. I find this check weird. [link] [comments] |
Unauthorized $500 withdrawal from my bank account. Bank won't help me. What do I do? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:26 PM PDT Hey guys. I was looking at my statement last week and saw a $500 cash withdrawal from less than a month ago. I was out of town when this happened and I'm the only person on the account. I tried calling the credit union and was told I would have to have an "account specialist" call me back. Almost a week later and I haven't heard back. Branches are drive-through only because of COVID and I need my $500 back. I know I could file a police report, but how do I get in touch with someone who can actually help me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:42 PM PDT I received a letter from a former employer that they discovered an overpayment of $800 because that portion wasn't vested. The distribution payment was on 12/13/2017. The funds were deposited to by bank account. I did not roll them over to another plan or IRA. They said they will send me updated 1099s for the original tax year by the end of November 2020. Do I need to pay them the $800? Or can I ignore the letter? Should I call and ask for proof of the overpayment? If I do not pay them, I'm afraid it could hurt my credit score somehow. How to actually buy foreign currency? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:40 PM PDT I'm moving to the US soon (foolish I know) and wondering what the best way to convert my currency to USD is? My bank offers it but is there a generally recommended third party that's better to deal with or offers better rates? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:27 PM PDT Hi, so I have a pretty in depth question with a little backstory necessary. So I'm a college student and decided to make a little side money by doing this. For reference, I reside in the state of Florida and I am nineteen years old without a single clue how taxes work. Beginning in July, I, along with another friend started buying computer parts and reselling them to make profit. I would buy these parts on sites like OfferUp, Mercari, Reddit, Ebay, and Facebook Marketplace. The first month we only made about $5000 in sales revenue but only about $1000 after factoring in the cost of the product itself and other expenses (shipping, bubble wrap, etc.) . But in August, we started investing a lot more money and found different contacts within OfferUp and Mercari where I was able to start buying computer parts in much larger quantities than before. I usually paid for these computer parts through cashapp, zelle, venmo, cash, through offerup or mercari directly and occasionally paypal. In August we had about $23000 in revenue and $5000 in net profit. We aren't an official business or anything, it's literally just 2 guys buying and reselling computer parts and making a profit. To sell these products, I usually post them on r/Hardwareswap, where buyers reach out and I send them an invoice through PayPal. I do not charge sales tax or anything when making the invoices. I also sometimes sold stuff through offerup and facebook marketplace locally. I keep records of how much I buy and sell everything for in an excel file, but I don't have too many receipts due to the transactions being on things like cashapp, zelle, and venmo. I can definitely find the receipts for the purchases I made directly in Offerup, Mercari, and Paypal though. I also know that PayPal reports accounts that have over $20000 in sales revenue to the IRS as well, in which we have already surpassed. Now getting to my questions:
Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Am I Being Overkill on Desires for My Next Car? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:00 PM PDT Hey Guys, Looking for some thoughts. I currently have a lease that is ending in 2 months. I make about 130k per year during normal-times and own a business, but I have no clue really how this year's profits (or lack thereof) will be because of COVID. I don't need to drive to work because of how close I live, but I do occasionally need to drive for work, so it is important that my car is reliable. I'm aiming to spend 5k-9k on a used Toyota or Honda. My current car is a nice Audi A6 loaded with options, so I'm unsure how the decline in quality will affect me... I'm mentally preparing myself to be in a much-less-nice car, and spending more than $9k would defeat the purpose for me I think (I want to drastically reduce my expenses and will most likely be paying cash to a seller on craigslist). Looking for any of your thoughts. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2020 03:35 PM PDT Hello everyone.. first I know how stupid I was and am. Yesterday I was at the bank and a man approached me to cash a check in for him.. I know nothing about checks so trying to do a good thing I did it and gave him $500. The check was for $800 so we were suppose to meet up today at 12:30. I realized shortly after it was a scam and my mom freaked. We called the bank and it still hasn't cleared and it wont until Tuesday, anyways he called me back today saying he was at the bank. My mom and I quickly went to the police station where they said there's nothing that can be done until it's completely finalized. I know the chances of getting the back are slim to non existent. But now the man has been texting me calling me, while I was with the police he sent me a text saying "your husband is outside chase".. I just don't understand his end goal. He stole the money why is he continuing to text me? He's texting me from an iPhone and saying "I am usually good judge of character. I'm very surprised you do that. You look timid yesterday. You have nothing to be afraid of me. I am family man. I just don't have my papers yet. But when I do. I open my own account. I'm sorry for bother you. But please no take my money. Is all we have. I have baby to feed. Pleas no do that" and that he will go to the cops and take action against meMy mom no longer wants me to go outside on my runs and I'm scared. I just don't understand what he's trying to get out of me now? If anyone has any advice or any idea what's he doing now i would really appreciate it. The cops told me not to engage with him and that's what I'm doing, he keeps calling me and has called me twice since starting this post. I want to change my number but should I just keep all his texts as evidence for when the cops can do something? [link] [comments] |
Is peer to peer a good investment. Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:23 PM PDT I have been investing in peer to peer lending for about the last years. I wondering if others have been in peer to peer to for a longer period of time. My feeling with interest rates low peer to peer is no longer the best investment any longer. [link] [comments] |
RSUs as income or assets for mortgage Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:56 PM PDT We're a married couple planning to buy a home in about 10-18 months. We both work for stable publicly traded companies and receive RSUs (restricted stock units) as part of our compensation. Our annual RSU grants make up about 20% - 25% of our total annual gross compensation. Some of our RSUs are vested, and thus can be sold whenever the trading window is open. Some of our RSUs are granted but are not yet vested. Given our vesting cycle, we also expect more RSUs to vest around the time we plan to buy and apply for a mortgage. We are unsure how (if at all) these RSUs could benefit us when it comes to our future mortgage. Does anyone have experience having granted and vested RSUs when applying for a mortgage? Are vested RSUs treated as income or assets? Are granted (but not yet vested) RSUs at all considered? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Should I (18) be worried about money? Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:27 PM PDT As some background, I'm a recently graduated high school kid who's attending college virtually this fall. I'm staying home with my family at the moment. I earned a scholarship for college, and they are paying the remaining tuition, which I am very grateful for. This summer I started working a part time job and for the first time in my life, I have my own money which I can choose to use however I want. The problem is, I grew up in a very frugal family, so I'm a little torn about spending it. In the back of my head, I know I should save as much as I can and eventually begin investing it or placing my money in a retirement account. But on the other hand, I would really like to spend most of it on trips with friends, higher quality clothes that actually last, my hobbies, etc. I've already spent about $400 out of the $2500 or so I've earned so far this summer, and I was planning another 400 or so before slowing down. (I promise I won't go into debt and I'll pay my balances, my parents have schooled me well enough on that haha...) I know most people on this sub are adamant about saving and have a "never too young!" mentality , but I can't help but feel that saving isn't the most important thing for me right now as a young person who wants to have some new experiences... am I wrong? Am I just a silly 18 year old who doesn't know how to handle their money? If so, please smack some truth in me! [link] [comments] |
$47k savings, $60k in student loans... looking to move out Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:02 PM PDT Hi, admittedly I don't have a lot of financial knowledge. I am 24-years-old and am two years post-bachelors degree. Still living with my parents and have virtually no bills aside from monthly student loan payments. Average biweekly income depends, but is usually between $1500-1800. I pay $471.02 biweekly towards my student loans. I've paid off 17% of them so far. Interest rate is 5.790% and I am on a 7-year repayment plan and due to pay them off in January 2027. No credit card, home, or auto loans/debt. My credit score is currently 745. I've been saving up to be able to move out, whether that be renting an apartment or putting a downpayment on a condo/townhouse/house. Rent is insane around here (~$1600/month for a one bedroom) but I don't think I am ready for homeownership. I'm not physically being forced to leave, but I am so ready for some freedom. Prior to moving out, I'll need to buy/lease a car as well, as I currently drive a family car. Will be able to remain on my parent's cell phone and medical insurance, though. I've been toying with the idea of putting down a substantial payment on my student loans as well. But, with a decent interest rate and a doable bimonthly payment, I'm hesitant to see my liquid savings go. I've had no issues paying my loans (even through the pandemic) but like having a comfortable savings account. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Buying my first house.....possibly Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:03 AM PDT Buying my first home..... possibly Hello all! Just to introduce myself before I ask the question.... I'm a 26 year old single RN. I work an office job in nursing making ~62,000/year gross. I have two fur babies I'm still brand new relatively to this position, but believe that I have finally found what I am supposed to be doing for my career. I semi follow Dave Ramsey and only have a little over 6,000 left to go with student loans before I'm debt free. I would love to follow his advise to save at least 20% down for a house but that's still going to take a couple more years. I just don't necessarily agree with everything he says. I have about 14,000 in the bank right now ( a lot of that is budgeted towards various things. I'm a YNAB user and LOVE IT! Just today, a townhome/twin home piqued my interest that's on the market. It's newer, (2002) so everything should be in good repair (furnace, ect). I would eventually like to get new kitchen appliances from the looks of it, but that wouldn't be an emergency. I would save up for that. Currently paying 650 in rent plus cable/internet, water and electric. Apartment pays trash Apartment is 5 minutes from work. House would be in the next town over, about a 20 minute drive So the question is, how low was your down payment for your first home? The house is ~145,000. Doesn't appear that there is a HOA involved Looking at my situation, would this be a good time to at least consider this opportunity? I really struggle with making big decisions like this, but I also know buying can be a really good thing to start building equity. I'll be praying about it, and my parents are really wise about this stuff too. Thoughts, insights? [link] [comments] |
