Neighbor's house burned down due to negligence. We have the same insurance company. How do we ensure a fair deal? [WA State, USA]

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:45 PM PDT

The neighbors had a huge pile of trash, including chemicals and propane tanks. Rats were living in the pile and likely chewed through an electrical wire that started the fire. The fire quickly got out of hand when propane and gas cans started exploding.

We lost a 75+ y/o fir tree, several very old family heirloom rhodies, our fence, a few random ferns/plants, and a few hundred sq. ft. of grass. The neighbors experienced a total loss, but no one died thankfully. We were all very lucky.

We both have Traveler's Homeowners' Insurance. They've been great to us in the past, but we're worried that we won't get a fair payout since they're batting for both teams here. What should we do?

Additionally, how do we get a fair payout for the tree and rhodies? They are irreplaceable and added significant intrinsic value to the home. A doug fir seedling is free, but a 75+ y/o tree can't be replaced in our lifetimes. The intrinsic value of that tree is far more important to us than the value of its wood. The rhodies were my wife's parents. We transplanted them years ago and they were nearly 30 y/o.

Any advice is much appreciated. We don't want to screw anyone over, but we do want to make sure we're compensated fairly.

    Thank you in advance!

Took off my own side mirror

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:44 AM PDT

This morning (like an hour ago) I was pulling out from underneath an awning and took off my driver mirror with the support pole.. it was hanging from the wire, and I superglued it back on and you almost couldn't tell anything happened in the first place.

Do I need to put this on my insurance? Or do I just leave it undocumented, and later down the line someone buys it with a "broken" side mirror that is weaker structurally.

If I put it on my insurance does my rate increase because this is classified as an accident, do I need to put a maintenance report on my car that this happened? There are so many things I don't know what I should or shouldn't do. Any help is much appreciated. Sorry if this is the wrong sub.

    Edit: I live in Texas

    Uninsured dump truck driver

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 02:35 AM PDT

My daughters car was hit by a dump truck delivering dirt to a job site. The insurance policy he listed on the police report had lapsed. If the company that owns the truck truly is uninsured, what are my options? Should i threaten to go to the company they were doing work for?

Rear ended and Claim was Denied NY

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 10:51 AM PDT

Hey Everyone, looking for some advice on what to do.

My father was rear ended late one night a month or so ago. The person opened a claim in their insurance claiming he cut them off and stopped short causing the accident. He filed a claim as well with his side saying they just drove into the back of him. My father does not have collision so he went through their company. He received a letter today stating since they are not legally responsible and "There are conflicting versions surrounding the details of this accident and it is word vs word. Your failure to keep a proper look out while making an unsafe lane change was the proximate cause of the accident."
I advised him to get a copy of the police report but I'm not sure what to do past that. I was under the assumption that if you were rear ended no matter what that person was at fault unless they can somehow prove they were not.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Apartment Flooded, now HOA Insurance and Condo Insurance both point the finger at each other for Coverage?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Sorry if this is wrong place to post about this! So I live in a garden (basement) unit in Chicago, IL. Back in mid-May we had a large rainstorm, flooding the river walk downtown, and most garden unit apartments in the area. Ours was seemingly fine, except a small amount of water in the middle of our apartment. We got the water cleaned up ASAP and brought in a water mitigation specialist who found more water and tore up our floor and sprayed disinfectant to make sure mold doesn't grow. The HOA insurance is saying this is covered. The source of the flood was the city water line in the front of the building backing up through our main water line (which runs directly underneath our apartment) through the grease trap in the parking lot (back of the apartment) through the pipe leading to our main kitchen stack (in the middle of our apartment) and up the stack. The pressure from the city water line backing up caused the leak to occur - we've never had leaking here in the past (and have not had any subsequent leakage with any other rainstorms since then). My homeowners insurance is saying they won't cover fixing the floor because the flood was caused by a sewer back-up originating in the city sewer drain, which is outside of our plumbing system. The HOA is saying the reconstruction is only covering the drywall and subfloors, but we're responsible for the flooring since that's "within the drywalls," and thus our responsibility/our personal homeowner responsibility. I sort of have issues with that logic because they covered tearing up the floor when it was still "within our drywalls" so they should cover replacing them. Both have denied fixing any of the plumbing issues since they're considering them routine upkeep and wear and tear. Does anyone have experience with this or know how to possibly push back? Unsure of next steps.

Insurance company wants to total car.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:08 PM PDT

My car was rear ended, the insurance company(aarp(the Hartford)) of the other driver has accepted full responsibility. They however insist on totaling the car. I am not a car expert. But looking at the damage. I just don't see it being totaled. Granted I know they use fancy math. They sent someone out to take pictures. All from terrible angles. They are refusing to let me get a second opinion. Stating that they are confident in their decision. Then also stating the hidden damage which they didn't calculate would also drive it higher. If they haven't done a hands on evaluation how can they possibly give a true evaluation. They are also citing they are bound by state laws. As far as what numbers they have to follow. I suspect it's not that cut and dry they are just hoping I am not smart enough to know the right things to say/do. Help!

How to get more value from a custom built computer

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 10:47 PM PDT

Hey guys I'm just wondering if there is a way for me to get more money from my home insurance claim for a custom built computer.

I had built it over 2 years ago and I sent the insurance company the parts list. I bought the parts of various venders and it got lost over the years. The insurance company gave me a replaced cost of 550 cdn

I called the restoration company hoping they still have it so I can ask them to open it up and take pictures but they already tossed it.

Is there anything I can do ?

    Insurance vs body shop confusion

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 10:26 PM PDT

Here is my update to my previous post (https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/iiqh0g/did_i_waive_my_right_to_written_estimate_from/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) and more questions. To satisfy location bot, I'm from Orlando FL.

So the insurance company finally paid a supplement of $1800 out of the $3000 that the body shop quoted. So there is still about $1200-1300 deficit.

The body shop says the insurance adjuster refuses to communicate with them and negotiate. The insurance company says things can't be negotiated on phone, only through written communication. Is that true? Even so, the body shop says the adjuster doesn't communicate at all even through written.

I called the insurance company twice yesterday after that and they said that they have approved everything that the body shop submitted. So I asked them to send me a copy of the supplement that the body shop submitted, but both times they sent me a copy of the supplement that they approved (which I already have access to through my online account). What's the use of sending me what's approved? I want to see what has been declined and why. Is the insurance just dodging or is there some genuine confusion with this?

I am going to have a call with both parties at the same time tomorrow.

Taking over a Captive Agency (MN)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:10 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I am in the middle of putting together a business plan for X company to take over a recently vacated agency.

I'm kind of at a stand still right now, especially when it comes to the financial side of things. I think they are looking for monthly figures for the first year, and quarterly numbers up to the full 5 year plan. These include break even analysis, bottom line, all of that fun stuff. What kind of growth should I project? When should I hire another staff member?

Sorry for the noob question, I've just never ran my own business before. Any help and insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Auto insurance. Brother crashed mom's car, I am the policy holder for the family's car insurance. CA.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 09:40 PM PDT

Hi. Here is the situation: I am paying for my family's car insurance, except for my older brother. He is not an insured driver on my policy. My mom's car has basic liability 50/100k. My brother used her car and was in an accident not that long ago. It might have been a 3 car accident, his fault. I don't know what injuries there were. What happens if the liability coverage I have on my mom's car isn't enough to cover all the damages? Will this come back to me financially? Also should i trust that this accident is being taken care of properly? I don't know if he's reported it to his insurance, or if he even has to. I don't even know if he has insurance. Should I make a report to my insurance company? I feel like this is creeping into legal advice territory but I really want to know what happens from the insurance side of things. Sorry if this is confusing, I'm not sure I really know how to ask the question.

Question about multiple auto insurance claims in a short amount of time?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:50 PM PDT

I recently purchased a 2020 Tesla Model 3 after years of saving up for one. Exactly one week after I took delivery of the car, I got rear-ended in a drive thru. Thankfully, with the built in cameras, it was quite easy to prove that I was not at fault. That claim is still in progress as I'm waiting for the other person's insurance to pay out, but after several inspections with both my insurance (USAA) and their insurance (Allstate) everything seems pretty concretely in my favor.

However, just about two weeks ago, a random rock chip flew up while I was driving and cracked my windshield. It hasn't reached the inside of the glass, which is good. However, it spread into a single crack that's almost half the length of the windshield itself.

I will obviously need to get this repaired. I have a service appointment set with Tesla tomorrow, but their out of pocket windshield replacements are very expensive; up to $1500-$1600, which I have available, but will make finances extremely tight for me.

At the same time, I am hesitant about filing another claim with USAA even though neither this nor the last incident were my fault. I know that comprehensive insurance claims normally don't impact rates, but considering the previous claim where the other drive was at fault, do you think making the claim on this windshield will impact my rates significantly? Any input/advice you guys could provide would be super helpful; I almost never go through auto insurance for anything as I've enjoyed many years of safe and incident-free driving, but seems like this Tesla is cursed.

TL;DR - Want to make an auto glass claim, but have a recent collision claim where the other driver was at fault. Concerned about the two claims hiking my rates if I file the second one.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I am in Chicago, IL!

At fault accident with hot head neighbor

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:04 PM PDT

I backed into my neighbors car (he lives in the same building directly below me). When the incident occurred, he came out of the house yelling. I offered my insurance information to him multiple times but he refused it. He said it was fine, told me to leave, and went back inside his apartment. I ended up leaving to pick up food (which is where I was headed when I backed into his car) and came back.

Not long after I got back, I heard my door bell ring. My neighbor threw me this pitch that the damages to his car could be up to 1000 dollars and that if we go through insurance my rate would go up exponentially. This is my first accident and I honestly felt like I had no other choice, so I agreed to pay him 400 dollars (a number he suggested with no reason given) for the damages and we would call it even.

After review my insurance policy and talking to a few people, I realized that insurance is the only way I can cover my ass and make sure his car is actually fixed. Although I live above him, I almost never see him. I tried ringing his door bell but there was no answer, so I left a note with an explanation and my insurance information, along with my phone number to message so that I can get his information. It has been other 24 hours since I left the note and I have not been contacted.

I want to call my insurance, but I don't even know this mans name. I'm not really sure where to go from here. I don't want to escalate the situation because I still have to live above him, and I'm afraid of the anger issues he has displayed. Will calling my insurance with no information other than my story and his address do anything?

    Edit: I live in Pennsylvania

    Best dash cams

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:46 AM PDT

Yesterday while heading back to work I was going towards an intersection. It was sunny. I thought it was green got closer and noticed cars were stopped on the other side. My light however was not red but yellow. I kept looking at the traffic light and slowly proceeding through it was still yellow at least to me. There was another vehicle proceeding the other way that slammed on its brakes. When I got through the intersection I looked at my rear view mirror and the light was red. Fortunately there wasn't a collision but I'm wondering if I shouldn't get a dash cam for situations like this.

Is there a downside in reporting vandalism to my auto insurance?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 12:16 PM PDT

In short, my car was parked on the street and it looks like someone kicked it in two different spots. The damage isn't too bad visually, although a body shop told me it would be around $2,500-$3,000 to repair. I have $1,000 deductible for my auto insurance and live in CA.

I'm wondering if there is any downside on reporting this as vandalism to my auto insurance. From what I read, my rates should not go up if I submit this claim? Is there anything else I should consider that will negatively affect my policy?

    Car insurance question

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:01 PM PDT

Hi, My 28 year old nephew who is on my car insurance policy got a speeding ticket about 8 months ago and his court date for the ticket is in the middle of October 2020. I told him that I'm going to remove him from my policy and have him buy his own insurance because I don't want his ticket to affect my insurance cost so my question is, if I remove him from my insurance policy today will my insurance still check his driving record once renewal period comes which is in may? Will my insurance premium go up during the renewal period if i remove him now? His court date is in October but i want to remove him now regardless if his case gets dismissed or not. Thanks for all the help. I'm in California

Coverage Amounts needed for home (FL)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:46 PM PDT

Is there a calculator somewhere I can use to help give me a guideline of how much coverage is needed for my dwelling coverage? I'd like to find one for personal property as well, but with enough legwork I could do that on my own. I'm getting started on a detailed home inventory as well, based on information here, so that will help. I want to make sure I'm getting quotes for the amount we need - as I suspect we might currently be underinsured, but the policy is nearing renewal anyhow. I know there's a calculator, but I'd like to find out for myself to understand better, instead of relying on any agent who makes their living by getting me to buy a policy.

    Question about coverage for newborn

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:45 PM PDT

please help! So my first child was born 7/19. I added him to my health insurance plan retroactively a few days later. His mother and I are on different insurances, all of the recent pediatric appointments have been claimed to my insurance. Today, she received a bill for 2k for baby and 1.5k for her (give or take).

Do I have any chance of getting this transferred to my coverage? I was under the impression his coverage began under my immediately.

So we had an accident, sent car to auto body even though it was a mechanical issue. Come to find out auto body shop is telling insurance we are trying to commit insurance fraud, never looked at the car properly(put on lift, look at under carriage). Talked to insurance yesterday and they said I need to pick a new auto body shop and we can get it reestimated. Did my homework and picked a new shop and now insurance is saying they will not allow it to be moved and to save both of us money I shouldn't move it. In USA Arkansas

    Auto Insurance (USAA) in Ohio

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:07 PM PDT

Hello, my son (17) was at fault in an auto accident with full coverage. My daughter (16) was in the passenger seat. Son was turning left from a turn lane across two lanes with the nearest lane backed up to a stop. Lady in an SUV waves him through, he unfortunately goes without checking the furthest lane and now has his first citation.

My daughter was in the passenger seat, (she's okay, minor bruising and soreness) where the impact occurred so we took her to the ER to get checked out just in case (family doctor said urgent care, urgent care said they don't see MVA patients due to third party insurance so ER it was).

**Our insurance company wants me to sign an offer to accept a $500 medical payout on her behalf for her pain and inconvenience. Is there any hidden trick here? I can't figure out why they would send me $$ for her potential injury when my son who is on the same insurance plan (mine) was the one driving.

    Any insights?

*I NEED HELP* What do I do regarding my auto insurance claim?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 09:25 AM PDT

So on 08.19.20 I was hit by an uninsured driver who tried fleeing the scene when he hit me but was chased by neighbors near by where I was hit and was escorted back. I happen to just find out my vehicle (06' BMW 330xi) is considered a total loss with $17k+ in damages to repair. I'm deeply upset and very irritated because I worked very hard for that car and put all of love and money into it.

The guy who hit me originally lied to me and the police officers handling the accident about having insurance so I later found out the next day when trying to make an insurance claim through "his company" that he doesn't have an active policy through their company and never received a payment to begin his policy so after finding out that information, we made a verbal agreement that he would pay me a $1,000 for my deductible along with $500 for a rental car for the time I'm without a car beings he was uninsured and I had insurance but I have an out of pocket deductible and unfortunately I don't have rental coverage in my insurance policy. I also informed him of possibly taking him to civil court if he doesn't follow through with our verbal agreement especially with how he has handled the situation after hitting me.

I pay almost $400 so I thought rental coverage would be tacked into my policy but I guess not. A week went by and the guy never followed through with paying me and gave me the full run around. Again, I told the guy originally that if he doesn't follow through with paying me the $1,500 that he agreed on, the officer told me I should seek civil action especially after finding out he doesn't have insurance and he did hit me and try to flee the scene. Well, a week later he sends me a mean drawn out text about how I'm a princess brat and he's trying to get me that money but he has mouths to feed and I'm not his first priority and if I just gave him a little longer he would give me the money so I can shut up and go on my merry way. Even though I kindly gave him a week since the accident and he gave me empty promises throughout the whole week and never followed through.

So, I got some legal advice and was informed to give him until 9:00am before I was supposed to meet the attorney (Monday, yesterday) at 10:00am. He never texted or called so I proceeded with meeting the attorney. I gave him a week and 5 days to pay me.

The attorney informed me that instead of suing someone who probably won't end up following through with paying anyways and if he did follow through with it, the attorney would be taking a 3rd of the money I receive so he told me what he would do if he was me. He told me to request a Proof of Loss form from my insurance company and with it, write down the amount of pain/inconvenience it caused me, the amount of repairs for the vehicle, the amount of medical attention I needed after the accident, etc and send that over to the insurance company and they have 60 days to respond with saying something along the lines of "we can't give you that much but we can give you this much" or "we can give you that and will be sending you a settlement check for that amount."

    Is that all accurate?

Is there something else I could do?

I have full coverage insurance but that guy literally just took my baby away from me that I've worked so hard for and literally tried fleeing the scene after he hit me and he isn't receiving any punishment for it (besides a minor failure to stop at a stop sign ticket) while I'm over here struggling and suffering from his mistakes. I could of had a child in the car and he didn't even care enough to check. I got hit by the worst possible person and I just got back into school while working full-time so this isn't a easy or stress-free experience for me at all. I just want to know what I can do and how I can get the most from this awful situation.
