I hit a parked rental car- are they trying to scam me?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:09 AM PDT

    Edit: This is in Wisconsin.

So, Friday I'm coming home, I had three beers over 4 hours but was not drunk. As I'm parallel parking, another car raced down the street (we have a lot of stolen car joyriding and other crime in the area, it happens) so I back up super quick and hit the corner of a car. I get out, start writing a note, and then the people who's car it was (live about 5 houses down) came outside and walked up to me. They first said they saw what happened (car speeding down street) and understood how I hit them.

Then they said it was a rental, and had to be back by Saturday and was gonna cost money. I told them they could bring it to a body shop and if I couldn't pay it they would charge my insurance, or that I could talk to the rental company and give all my insurance info and let them settle it.

They were really upset, said they would have to pay for while it was getting worked on, they would be liable, etc. They then said I was drunk and started to record me. I was just standing there and said "you have all my info, I'll cover the repair or my insurance will". My anxiety was through the roof and I was just standing there.

Today, Monday, they called and said that it would be $2000 out of pocket at a body shop. I said I couldn't afford it but they could file the claim with my insurance. Now they're saying if they bring it to the rental, they'll owe the full amount until my insurance pays it. They're saying if they bring it to a body shop, they'll have to pay for each day it's in there.

They wouldn't give me the rental company to contact them.

They said they're going to just show the cops the video of me being "drunk" and then they won't be at fault at all. They've also used vaguely threatening language like "be fair or we'll have to settle this the right way"

I'm not too worried about the video, I look like an idiot but not drunk. What do I do though? If my insurance contacts them and they say I was drunk, what then?

I just have no idea how to handle this situation. I am beyond confused.

It was more than sixty days ago. Any chances?

UK Car Insurance - Renewing after claim

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:28 AM PDT

Unfortunately2 last week I had a small accident whereby I rolled forwards into another car - the road we were entering was clear and I expected him to move on to it; silly error. My front grille/bumper is cracked in and I need to replace parking sensors.

2 nights ago, my car was keyed up and down the sides and I suspect it to have been a neighbour of mine :(

I've been told by my insurer "renewal premiums are based on 100 factors and a claim will bear the same weight whether it is fault or non-fault. You are obliged to inform us of any incidents, and the fact that we are informed of an incident will affect your renewal anyway".

My question: Should I fix both issues (separate claims) through my insurer or look to fix elsewhere to try and preserve my low premium?

    0 years NCB (6 on a motorcycle), £400 excess, £~400 premium currently.

I'm sick and need health insurance NOW.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:35 AM PDT

I've been back and forth with Marketplace.gov since March. I was dropped from my moms insurance Nov 2019 (I think she had Medicare because she is disabled) but they did it right as enrollment closed and I had filed for an appeal. Didn't think to apply for Special Enrollment because I thought they made a mistake (I was supposed to stay on her insurance until 26) but it ended up that I was denied again for "making too much." I've tried applying for Special Enrollment after I got out of unemployment from being furloughed. Denied. Appealed. Denied. Appealed again. Now I'm waiting, in the end of September. I know I can apply Nov. 1st but I need short term insurance until January 1st 2021. I live in TN, I'm 24, non-smoker, no pre-existing conditions and have had a steady job since I was around 19/20. I get recurrent UTIs but I think mine might've become a Kidney infection and I need a urologist and possibly an ER visit if I keep getting worse. I was looking at Golden Rule and Farm Bureau but if you have advice please help. Thank you.

Office Visit Claim - Deny Unless Secondary Exists? Bonus HSA question.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:06 PM PDT

I have a hi-deduct / HSA plan through my employer. I went to an MD office a couple months ago. Looking at the EOB online, the submitted CPT(?) codes were vague. The denial by my insurance looked to me to be due to this. It had the standard "we asked for more information; your doctor's office didn't response" verbiage as well.

I got the bill for the full price because of denial. It makes reference to "couldn't submit to secondary b/c of primary payor blah blah blah"

My question is: I called my primary insurance. They asked for secondary insurance info. It seems to me the primary has no functional need to know wtf the secondary is paying; only to validate the secondary is indeed the secondary. What am I missing?

Also: I saw reference in a thread on here as to whether a poster's plan was an HSA plan, with regard to how a claim processed. Would an HSA plan allow charges to remain high during deductible period, but reduce them to "allowed charges" after deduct is met? Thanks.

    advice--Insurance company says they'll pay 100%. I end up paying 100%

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:56 PM PDT

My company has two options for health insurance- high deductible, and low deductible. I have the high plan, which means I basically pay 100% until the deductible is met. Recently, I went to a therapist, and the first appointment was covered completely by my health insurance company. I called them to ask about it, and the customer service rep said that due to Covid, they were paying for telehealth appointments for mental health. I asked if future appointments were covered, and the person said yes.

A couple appointments later, I'm getting bills. I call again, and a different rep tells me the same thing. all previous appointments are covered; all future appointments are covered. She said that sometimes the computer doesn't catch everything because of the recent Covid amendments. She would correct everything.

This repeats for the third rep.

On the 4th call, this rep (rep 4) is telling me that they don't cover my appointments. I will have to pay. She sends it up to her supervisor, because I feel cheated.

I call again in a couple days to follow up, and rep 5 says what the others said. everything is covered.

Rep 4 leaves a message saying that she confirmed that my high deductible plan wont pay for any appointments until after the limit has been reached. I ask for her to listen to the other phone calls. I want to know what they were reading that said I would be covered.

Should I have to pay for my appointments? I believe the fair thing to do is for my insurance company to at least pay for all the previous appointments. When the customer service reps tell me that I wont have to pay, it directly influences the appointments I made.

    OR charge for dental work

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 04:39 PM PDT

My 4 year old had a giant hole in her tooth. It wasn't bothering her to much but it was only a matter of time. Dentist said she needs a root canal but my daughter absolutely hated the dentist. No way this work was going to happen with out anesthesia. We felt the safest place was the hospital.

So they scheduled an OR room and get the paperwork done. We got pre-approval letter for the work to be done. I got codes from the dentist and I remember calling and asking if they were covered and they were.

Everything went well, it took a while to get the bill, but we get the bill and it turns out we were charged $17k and my insurance decided the OR room was not covered. I was told the code used was unlisted so it's not covered. Looking back at the pre approval letter it only mentioned the dental work to be done. Not the OR room or anesthesia. Fortunately the anesthesia was covered by my medical.

Any suggestions to help? The only suggestion so far was to ask the dentist to write a letter of medical necessity and if approved it would be covered under my medical insurance. Is this a likely to happen?

    Thanks in advance

"Work in Progress" - Dental Insurance w/ Crown Replacement

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:30 PM PDT

My Mother (68) has several crowns. One just fell off and needs to be replaced.

Because she has no insurance (on Medicaid), the procedure is about $1800 per tooth, which is out of our price range.

She is looking at getting the DeltaCare USA plan, which covers crowns at a much more manageable price. The only hangup is the following stipulation:

benefits are not provided for any dental treatment-in-progress started before joining the program (such as teeth prepared for crowns, root canals and impressions for dentures).

Her crown was put in years (10+) ago and has only now fallen out. She has not had any work done to repair it. Is getting a new crown going to be covered if she enrolls in this plan?

Raising a sinking house in the desert

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 09:25 PM PDT

Y'all were very helpful with my last question so hopefully my next one is just as successful 'cause it's for a friend. This is about a homeowner's claim in New Mexico. Currently the house of my friend is having helical screws installed to raise it up and prevent further sinking. Yes, this is a house sinking in the rocky, arid desert of New Mexico. The homeowner is being denied any compensation for raising and securing her home.

Here's the story. Approximately 35 years ago our main home builder (small town) began filling in an arroyo (drainage) with fill/rubble removed from job sites. The filling spanned 4 lots, about 3 acres. The fill/rubble included large pieces of concrete and asphalt and boulders up to 3' in diameter. Also discovered today was a tire. The depth of the fill has not been resolved yet but 6' to 8' is what I expect to find.

The filling was completed over several years and then sat dormant for maybe a decade and the lot changed hands within the family (mother to son). Then a house was constructed on the filled in lot in 2008. The house was occupied by the builders son for 4 years then sold to an unsuspecting single school teacher, my friend. She enjoyed living in the house for about 4 years until it started strange things started happening . She didn't realize it was sinking but doors began sticking and walls started showing cracks. Eventually (last year) two windows broke. This is when she started seeking help.

I'd like to back this story up slightly and add that the original builder of the home still owned the uphill lot. The filling continued and eventually forced sheet draining directly into her lot. She purchased the adjoining uphill lot and a trench was dug to prevent any more water incursion.

The final amount of subsidence was 4.5" and is currently taking 13 screws to bring it back up to level. The interior slab will have to be drilled and injected with a controlled density fill to raise and level it. Right now the bill is $40K and that doesn't cover broken windows, destroyed interior tiling, replastering and finish work to the sidewalks and driveway surrounding the house.

State Farm has denied her any claim and has said they will pay none of this. Is this how homeowners insurance works?

    Term Life?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:55 PM PDT

So I'm 20 years old, and just signed up for a term life plan. 500,000 for 20 years at 35.00 per month. My friend, who is the same age and height (but weighs 50 lbs less) got a rate for 17.00 at 500k and 30.00 for one million. I weigh 200 pounds and am 6 foot 3. He weights 150 at 6 foot 1. is this a good price? Also, there was no medical exam.

Please help a new car owner pick out auto insurance?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:52 PM PDT

I live in Maryland. 34 year old guy who rents. Single.

I originally signed up with Allstate when I was at the dealership buying the car, because I had to have insurance before they would let me buy, of course.

But now I'm looking around and Progressive seems to be my best option as they are the cheapest I can seem to get. They are offering their "Choice" insurance for $66.04 a month or $320 if I pay in full today.

But that is so cheap I am wondering what coverages I'm missing out on or don't have the proper amount of $ invested in. Can someone help me figure out what I need? Like I said I live in MD, I have a new 2020 vehicle, and I basically use it to drive to and from work about 25 miles a day, total. Occasionally I'll go to the park or a movie on the weekend or a restaurant.

I'm not interested in Snapshot or any of those devices you have to plug in to your car. I just don't like the idea of them.

Hopefully someone can help me figure this out. Thanks!

My parents are claiming that there will be an insurance liability issue if I share the same address as them, despite having a separate insurance plan. So they want me to find a new place to live. Is this true?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:05 AM PDT

I'm not really sure what to flag this under. But I really need to understand what they're talking about.

For reference, I have 2 accidents under my driving record. Both are not at fault, both were in the same year, but had never affected my rates on my own insurance. The first accident I was rear-ended. The second accident, someone ran a red light and collided into my vehicle.

My parents on the other hand are blaming me for their own problems with auto insurance. I haven't gotten a clear reason or example yet as to how this would be an insurance liability issue should "anything" happen, if I share the same address as them.

Now they want me to get a new address and their excuse is for liability reasons if anything happens.

State Farm Possible Total Loss Texas

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:51 PM PDT

    Hi all.

I have a 2012 BMW 328i, 2.0 4 cyl turbo, (Paid off vehicle with full coverage through statefarm).
I started having intermittent steering issues where I would lose power steering and decided to take it to a shop to get it fixed.

I take my car in to an independent BMW shop to have the steering rack replaced and they told me i had *extensive* damage and would need a whole new front end. They claimed I had bent control arms, busted shocks, busted ball joints, broken steering rack and bent wheels, and that the easiest thing was for me to get my car totaled out because it would cost 10k-12k usd to repair.

This is where I frantically called my insurance to have them assess everything and thus, opened up a claim.

I decide to take my car to BMW for it's second opinion(no other reputable BMW shops in my area) and they tell me I need a new steering rack, all new passenger side suspension, rear rotors and programming. They quote me $8,700 usd in damages but do not mention my car being totaled out.

I am HIGHLY worried that statefarm will give me some awful total loss check, Awful for me would be in the $5-7k usd range. KBB value gives me a $6k usd starting point for poor condition, NADA(which I've heard has inflated prices) gives me an $8k usd starting point for poor condition.

Does anyone have experience with statefarm and bmw values? I have always kept my car maintained regularly but will need to get all my service records in order.

I do not have any engine or transmission issues, interior is in great condition, small scratches around the car, one minor wheel scuff.

TLDR; my car may be totaled out by my insurance company and I'm afraid that the check will be entirely too low.

How long does it take to get health insurance on your own?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:06 PM PDT

I'm kind of in a bad situation, and lost my job. I've been waiting a really long time for them to send me Cobra information, and whenever I contact them, they are still working on it. I'm close to running out of medications, and I'm not sure what to do. Is it possible to get Cobra on my own? Is healthcare. Gov a better option at this point (it's been a month)?

    Hertz rental car hit me

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:33 PM PDT

He came onto oncoming traffic and was at fault, police came and wrote a report. My car is semi driveable but I shouldn't be driving it, I have liability only. Texas takes 10 days for the report to be available so unless he admits it to his company it could take a while.

Can I get a rental for now and bill hertz later?

Business insurance: Is it really bad to say we don't require certificates of insurance from suppliers?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 02:44 PM PDT

How catastrophic is it to say on an application that we do not require insurance certificates from vendors. I've only ever worked with large corporations and assumed they were insured. I usually ask when I remember to but don't always get a COI back. Is it going to be horrible if I answer on the new application that we don't require them?

Never got compensated for not at fault accident

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 02:25 PM PDT

A little over a year ago I was coming home from work and a motorcycle sped through a stop sign and hit my passenger side, hard enough to make me spin and hit someone's fence and smash in my entire passenger side. For a few weeks afterwards I couldn't move my right arm all that much.

When the accident happened, the guy who owned the bike was there. He told me the guy that hit me had stolen it and that he would pay for everything with his insurance. I got the police report, i could only take pictures of my own car then that was it. I was driving a 2000 Civic if that matters.

I didn't get any money, and it turned out he didn't have insurance on the motorcycle because you don't have to have it in Florida. So that gave me nothing either.

A few months ago I got a call saying the guy who hit me was still in the hospital and was suing me for his injuries. I got no follow up or anything, no idea what's happening with that. To this day my insurance has said they can't give me anything, I even got an attorney and they said they can't do anything for me because he didn't have insurance. I even went to physical therapy because they said it would help my case, but then they dropped it.

So my question is, what do I do? Is there anything I can legally do? Is it too late to get money from it?

ETA: I went to the hospital I think a day later.

Insurance has decided that the drug that they've approved the dosage for two years now requires preauthorization 10 months into our plan year. Is this normal? WA

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 02:19 PM PDT

My wife has been taking the same medication for years. When we tried to get it refilled this month, it was denied. After talking to them, they have decided that, 10 months into our plan year, the dosage they've approved for the last 2 years now requires preauthorization. I don't think this will be a huge problem to acquire, but it has caused a huge delay in getting her medication, and caused her to miss doses. Are they allowed to change coverage terms mid plan year? Are there steps to take to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Medical bills after a not-at-fault accident (PA)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:40 PM PDT

I was recently in a car accident that totaled my car and resulted in me taking myself to the ER from the scene. The other party accepted 100% liability. The property damage, deductible, and everything related to the car have been sorted out (thank god), but I'm now dealing with all of my medical bills.

I'm in PA, so my PIP fee scheduled and paid for my bills up to my policy limit. I didn't have health insurance at the time of the accident, so I'm now getting bills in the mail... which have already added up to be tens of thousands of dollars. I've been contacted by the BI rep of the other party's insurance company, and they obviously wanted to settle right away, and I said no. I inquired about them covering my medical expenses (and told them I don't have health insurance, which would normally be secondary to PIP), and they are saying they'll only pay a certain percentage of the medical bills. This makes no sense to me as I have 0% fault for the accident and would otherwise not have incurred these bills.

    So here are my questions:

    1. Shouldn't the other party's insurance be responsible for and cover 100% of my medical bills if they were 100% at fault? If they only cover a fraction of them, I'm still left with thousands of dollars worth of medical bills.

    2. My insurance/PIP was directly billed by the hospital/provider, and they paid up to my limits. I basically did nothing until then. I also noticed they often did not pay the full amount, which as far as I know, is indicative of fee scheduling. Can I ask the other insurance company to do the same for my medical bills (fee schedule, then pay them directly)? The BI rep seemed to want me to collect all of the bills and send them to them, then cut a check for the percentage they mentioned along with the settlement amount.

    3. Do I just not pay these bills until I have everything sorted out with my BI claim? I'm assuming that would have a negative effect on my credit, which I'm not happy about, but there are literally thousands and thousands of dollars worth of bills, as I've mentioned. I'm not concerned with getting a huge settlement or anything - I just want my medical bills to be paid. I don't foresee any additional treatment necessary in the future (I've had a full recovery), but these bills are still coming through even months later, so I'm assuming I won't be settling for quite some time.

Thanks in advance for any insight. I'm in my early 20s and don't have many people to ask about these kinds of things, let alone people with experience in auto insurance/BI claims.

ETA: It also may be worth mentioning I have full-tort.

What's going on with hurricane flood claims the last few years?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:39 PM PDT

I'm a catastrophe adjuster for NFIP flood claims. The last few years we've seen a number of storms that have produced major flooding, but almost all of them have produced very little in the way of flood claims. Everything since Hurricane Florence in 2018 seems to be a "bust", or at the very least have produced much less work then would be expected. Sally has reportedly caused major residential flooding, but when I asked my adjusting firm for an update this morning, they told me they've seen very few claims. "less than 100" to them, I'm told.

What's going on? Is this a trend with a cause, or just a string of flukes? Where are all the flood claims?

    Premium increase after total loss

I have a vehicle that is right on the border of being declared a total loss. I was at fault, so using my insurance for repair. I'm in Nevada, so threshold for repairs is 65% of fair market value.

Which has a greater effect on insurance premiums, having the total loss on your record or getting the vehicle repaired?

Was going-to get business insurance via 1 company IF they were able to process before my local brokerage, they were not but are still trying to bind me / charge me...

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I needed insurance for a project Friday-morning, spoke to an agent from a company across the country (CA, I'm in FL) and we'd worked-out that I'd be getting a plan from him BUT it was explicitly in-context of him being able to get me my certificate-of-insurance that day(last Thursday) IF he could not, I was going to pay a lil more by going through my local brokerage.

So- on thurs I did the electronic-signatures on the forms to sign-up for his policy, and then went through the electronic-payment. I spoke to him on the telephone, he tells me I should have my proof-of-insurance within 1-2hrs (it was this proof-of-insurance that I required by end of day, otherwise I'd be getting it the following morning/friday morning at my local broker before heading to the job) After waiting an hour for my insurance-certificate to hit my Inbox, I got an email saying payment was rejected (card had the $$...) I tried calling him and his boss, to no avail (well before end of business hours) The following morning I went to my local brokerage, got my coverage, and began my day- around 1pm the agent from the CA company calls and says I should check my email as my certificate-of-insurance should be there, I was exasperated and basically said "What are you talking about?? The payment was declined, I tried calling you guys and couldn't get through, I never took another step with you guys I went to my local broker this morning as I'd said I would" and he tells me he'd pushed the card through(unsure what the nature of the initial rejection was, but it was rejected)

His superior had me send proof of my local-brokerage insurance policy on Friday, but it's Mon and they're still being wishy-washy, just spoke to a new employee there who says they'll "Call the insurer to get authorization" to refund the deposit and cancel the policy (she says "it shouldn't be a problem since you've provided proof of the insurance you got" but honestly I'm floored he went ahead that following morning and charged the card, wasn't even my card in fact it was a friend/client's who was spotting the down payment and she is understandably floored that there's (2) separate insurance downpayments sitting on her card right now!

Thanks a ton for any help, and FWIW the local broker's policy was more expensive and I have emails with the CA-company's agent making clear that if I couldn't get my insurance-certificate IN-HAND for my Fri-AM job then there was NO DEAL as I had a backup who could do Fri-AM and that I only wanted to go w/ his out-of-state company if I was able to get my proof-of-coverage sooner than I could from my local broker(which was 9:30AM Friday)
