House, whole town likely burned down, what next?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:52 PM PDT

My daughter just had to evacuate due to wildfires. She JUST bought a house in a canyon in Oregon, like a month or two ago. Her partner works at a school there. It's a small community, and they say 100 buildings have already burned, including his school (and probably his job). That's likely to be the whole town.

Their homeowner's insurance is covering the cost of evacuation, and surely they'll cover rebuilding costs, but if the whole town is wiped out due to this fire, there's not going to be any reason to go back there. Who wants to build a house out in the middle of nowhere with no job and no town? An empty, scorched lot in a burned-out area with no community is likely all that will be left by the time the smoke clears. Of course, they still have a mortgage. They're young and walking away from a mortgage would screw their credit for a long time.

What usually happens in cases like these?

I know it likely depends on their particular policy, but I don't want to dig too deep and ask her too many hard questions right now. She's feeling pretty fragile.

    Master condo insurance process question

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:01 AM PDT

First time using home/ condo/ master insurance, and our adjuster is less than forthcoming with info.

I have a condo in a three unit building. Two weeks ago a pipe broke inside a wall when the portion of the pipe outside the wall was bumped.

The damage to my unit was fixable within a week (flood cut in bathroom requiring the removal of the toilet, vanity, baseboard, then put it back together after it was dry)

I got it fixed ASAP for various reasons, and with an ok from the adjuster. I paid out of pocket to get it done.

The unit under me had to gut their kitchen and bath, estimates to put it all back together are about 25k.

Just got the estimate, the total amount for my unit is fine, but not distributed to match what I paid (ex: I paid 500 for plaster, but estimate says 400; but reinstalling plumbing says 400 and I paid 300. Fake round numbers)

If I am happy with the estimate amount total, can I just accept it? Do I have to provide receipts if i accept the estimate? I will ask the adjuster too, but I'm wondering what normally happens.

The estimate for ther unit under me was low, so he is going to have to push back to get more.

    Thanks!

    Allstate Drivewise glitches

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 03:54 AM PDT

I'm a pretty consistent driver, and only really drive in rural roads. Nearly all of my drives have zero hits, no speeding, no hard braking, no phone.

Every once in a while, Drivewise will say i was speeding or hard braked. Totally incorrect. This is through the app. Anyone know why this is?

For example, this morning, I drove around no one, 55mph, all the way to work. At two random spots on my drive it said I went over 80mph (no way did that happen), and hard breakers (there's no stop signs or lights or cars where it says that happened).

    How to file theft claim

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 03:28 AM PDT

How do I file a theft claim if you know the identity of the thief? Or if the person stealing is a family member? Does relationship matter? How do I get started? I'm concerned about losing my insurance if I continue to live with the thief or if police need to be involved. Totally new to this.

    Who is at fault here?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:36 AM PDT

Hey guys, I was driving home one night and I was going maybe 30-35 on a 25 mph speed limit in a 2 way residential block. I noticed a car in the middle of the road obstructing both lanes and since it was pretty dark the headlights were really bright and I couldn't see much else besides the light. I actually thought the car was moving up the road towards me when I was approaching it. I didn't slow down too much because there was still room on my lane of the road to pass by... until I realized a little too late that the car door was open and I slammed it shut with my car. It turns out the man had parked in the middle of the road with his door open with no hazard lights only his headlights making a food delivery. So I want to ask, is this my fault?

Should I close case with no payment after no-fault accident

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 10:19 PM PDT

A car in my policy was involved in a multiple car collision which resulted on a rear-end impact; the damage was between minor and moderate, the car is a beater used for commuting . None of the other drivers had insurance and the policy report indicates one of the other drivers was at fault.

The damage is probably around 500 to 1k but because of the car, the other drivers lack of insurance and no collision coverage on this car on my part, I assumed we would have to eat the cost and just leave it un-repaired. Out of nowhere, one of the other parties lien holders filed a claim against my insurance by "accident" thinking the car in my policy was the one at fault; my insurance sorted it out with them.

I was told by my insurance that I could just close it or pursue the claim using the Uninsured motorist property damage(UMPD) limit that applies in this case ($3500 in CA), which I was unaware of. From what I know, statistically people involved in a car accident are more likely to be involve in another even if it was not their fault; insurances use this to calculate premiums an so I am wondering what would be better. Should I let the claim be closed and not seek out any compensation from the UMPD limit? Will this still affect future rates even if no payment is made? Or, should I pursue compensation given the claim/accident is already on record and they will very likely use this to increase premiums(will they?) in the future?

    Car Accident Settlement

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 09:44 PM PDT

I was involved in a minor car accident a few days ago. I was turning right when the car to the left of me turned into me. I'm waiting on the insurance company to let me know who's at fault. If the other person is found to be at fault how does settlement with the insurance company work? I've never had to deal with this before. I've been a wreck since this happened.

Finally received manager contact info for a homeowners claim I've made where the adjuster has been giving me the run-around. Looking for any advice on how to best speak with the manager.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:33 PM PDT

I'm sure some of you know my story as there was a couple weeks I was posting here often. Well, surprise surprise. We're still where we were 3 weeks ago when I stopped posting. I finally managed to get contact info for a manager and I'm hoping you guys can provide me with some insight on what to say to him as I've never had issues with an insurance company before and want to know how to best approach this.

Quick recap, my father passed away a couple months ago. He was left unattended for a little bit along with his dogs. Needless to say, the house needed a remediation team to come in and clean up the mess relating to my father's passing. I put in a claim with his homeowners insurance (HO3 policy) and over the last month and a half the adjuster has truly been giving me the run-around and will not answer anything. I'll break it down by week (starting week of 7/20). Skip to next bold if you don't care for breakdown.

7/20: File claim with homeowners. Adjuster says nearly immediately they will likely deny the claim as the moment my father passed his deceased body became a pollutant and pollution remediation is not covered by the plan. I looked over the policy, as did an estate attorney (not insurance attorney), and a private adjuster. All 3 of us agreed there is nothing in the policy that would note him to be a pollutant. There is a pollution exclusion, but it does not discuss natural wastes, bodies, bacteria, etc. at all. It expressly notes things such as metals, acids, etc. as what is excluded. Adjuster said he'd get back to me end of week with more info.

7/27: I call adjuster as he never got back to me. He said that state case law (my father passed in Florida, I live out of state) backs them up in stating my father and any fluids, gasses, and liquids are counted as pollution when he dies. He said they will be denying my claim by end of week. When I asked him to cite the exclusion within the policy he said he would send me a denial letter with more info after his managers approve it. I asked him again to cite it or the case law so I can review and understand. He said I can wait until I receive the denial letter to discuss further, then ushered me off the phone. I called back a few days later to try and get more info. He said the same thing and told me he will be in touch by end of week.

8/3: He didn't call back, so I called to get more info. He said he now wants to ask more questions. I sent him pictures of the damage and a quote from a biohazard remediation company. He said he would "put the denial on hold for now". He said they likely will still decline but he will entertain more information. Said he'd be back to me by end of week, but since my dad dying did not cause physical damage (he gave the example of my dad falling through a window, they would cover the window being replaced as the peril was caused by his action, not pollution) to not expect anything as the damage done was caused by pollution.

8/10: Seeing a pattern? He did not get back to me by end of week so I called. He reiterated there is nothing they can do and that he will be getting the denial packet ready for me. I asked him again to cite the policy and the state law. He said he will send me a letter with that info. I asked him to explain to me then how my father is suddenly a pollutant upon death. He said that's just how it is and state law backs them up. I asked him to offer more clarity and all he did was repeat my father's body is a pollutant and they don't cover pollution remediation. Any additional questions he said will be answered after I receive the denial letter. I asked for his manager contact and he said he will send me all that with the denial letter, but the denial letter will take a while because his manager is on vacation. I ask again for manager info. He said again he will deliver it with the denial letter. We get off the phone.

8/17: Adjuster randomly calls me mid-week to say that he wants to ask me a few more questions to see if "they can do anything for me" (i.e. themselves). I answer his questions. He says he'll get back to me end of week. I ask for his manager contact info. He says he'll email it to me. He does not. I email him and like prior emails I sent, I get no response.

8/24: Surprise, he doesn't get in touch by end of week. I call him instead. He says they now want the police report so they can review what the police noted and see if "that can help my (more like their) case". I told him to answer me on the policy and how it notes biohazards count as pollutants. He said to refer to the pollution exclusion in the policy (it does not exclude biohazards nor anything that sounds like bodily remains; it's all manufacturing remains, soot, and acids). I asked him to cite the state case law. He said he can't find the case law, but he'll get it together and send it along to me in the denial letter once his manager reviews it. I ask him to send me citations and manager info. He said to draft an email with everything I want in it. I do. I get no response.

8/31: I start sending a follow-up email daily as he has not sent me any info. He finally calls me later in the week to say that his manager is on vacation (again) and it will be a while before I receive anything. I tell him I don't care and to send me contact info for his manager and whatever manager is available. I also ask him for citations again. He says the citations will come in the denial letter. He sends me the manager contact info at the end of the week.

So that's where we are. This has gone on a painstaking amount of time and at this point it's seriously aggravating me. I now have contact info for his manager, but I'm unsure as to next steps. Obviously I need to call him as the adjuster isn't giving me any information whatsoever. How should I best handle calling the manager to discuss the claim? Should I ask him all the questions I was asking the adjuster (i.e. cite where in the policy this is excluded, cite the case law, explain to me how it will be denied, etc.) or is there a better way to approach this? I've never spoken with insurance companies before beyond a call or two, so this is new grounds for me.

I appreciate any help and can answer any questions. Thanks, all!

    Car Insurance Advice Please!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Okay Reddit fam. My insurance wants $170 down, and $150 a month for insurance. I got a new car, full coverage. And a FR44. I think I need to keep looking around. There was a lapse and Progressive wants to be asshats and not reinstate my policy. It was cheaper before at $134 now all of a sudden $150. It was because my license was not active and I paid DMV to re activate it. I'm just lost. Stay with them or look elsewhere. This was through a local agent. I'm in US, Virginia by the way.

Lost an appeal for lab work. Owe ~$1k to hospital. Advice for negotiating a lower rate as a lump sum?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:41 PM PDT

Apologies if this isn't the correct sub. If there's a more correct one is be happy to redirect my question.

I had some lab work done (3 standard blood panels) a bit back. Normally with insurance it comes to $100 or less. This time it came back just over $1000. I lost the appeal with Cigna.

At this point I'm fed up and just about ready to put this behind me (I'll consider it an expensive one time lesson).

    More to the point:

I called the hospital that did the tests and asked if they would be open to a lump sum payment (I opened with an an additional $450 to the $150 I had already paid) to wipe the slate and clear my account instead of continuing a payment plan for a total balance I can't super afford since I've been unemployed since April. I was told "that's not the way they do things" and told to apply via their financial assistance link online.

Am I crazy? Being able to negotiate medical costs is normal right? Insurance companies do it all the time. And for my tests (cbc, vitamin d, and another comparable one that I can't recall atm) the cost on my end shouldn't exceed the $600 I'm offering once you factor in the amount insurance has already paid.

    Thanks in advance.

Are these mortgage insurance quotes competitive?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:40 PM PDT

My mortgage broker included a Mortgage Insurance option with these quotes (listing joint sums for 35M/29F couple from Toronto, Canada):

    Life: $87 CAD

    Life & Critical: $203 CAD

Life coverage is up to $1M; critical illness is up to $500k

This offer is for term insurance in case someone dies.

Are these numbers competitive or should I look elsewhere? I need to submit the form tomorrow morning. Thanks for any advice!

Help! Insurance company only pay part of the supplement and a lower labor rate

The other party's insurance company denied part of the supplement and only be willing to pay labor at $44/hour where the shop charge $48/hour. I have a detailed list showing which repair procedures are denied by insurance company. I have not spoken with their adjuster yet. I need some advice on which procedure is necessary for the repair and should be pay by at-fault-party insurance. How should I convince them to pay for it as well as the price difference in the labor rate. Thanks!

    Help understanding total loss situation

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:53 PM PDT

While driving last week, a woman failed to yield and turned in front of me. I was unable to stop and we crashed, along with 2 other cars hitting me in the rear. (She was found completely at fault and cited by the state police.) Now I am trying to understand all the nuances of what to expect.

Basically, my car is a total loss. I am waiting on confirmation, but with the front end looking like it does and 5 out of my 6 airbags going off, I highly doubt it would be classified anything else. I am still paying on my car (bought it 5 years ago with the idea that it was a good priced investment that would last me 15 years).

For the sake of this scenario, let's say I owe 7k and the car is worth 12k. I do have gap insurance, not sure if this even applies. If I'm understanding what I'm reading, the insurance company will pay me the 12k value which I then have to use to pay off the remaining loan balance, leaving me with the remainder (5k) and no damn car, and nothing to show for all the money I had spent on this vehicle. Can anyone please verify if this is correct or if there's anything I'm misunderstanding? If this is correct, I'm honestly furious since I spent this money and have nothing to show for it due to someone else's stupidity.

Is Allstate’s exemption on food/medicine deliveries for personal policy holders still in effect?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Earlier this year Forbes seems to had mentioned that since April due to COVID19 shutdowns a number of insurance companies including Allstate are providing an compassion exemption and covering some "commercialized" activities they don't normally cover under their personal policies such as food/Groceries/medicine deliveries. Without the need to purchase an additional rider. Which I know Allstate has one but only for Uber/Lyft rideshare or Ubereats. The articles claims that for Allstate this policy would stay in effect as long as the state of emergency is still in effect. Though I would like to know how they consider whether the state of emergency is in effect. Ie is it still considered in effect in California, or nationwide? Apparently no agent I talked to has an answer to this question.

Also does this apply to third party app based delivery companies such as Instacart or only restaurants, pharmacies, or grocery stores that send their employees to deliver items?

Got hit by someone on interstate

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:22 PM PDT

So I was coming home on I75 in central Florida when I went to go around this black scion I was in the center lane and she was in the center lane. I went into the far right lane to go around her. As about 1/4 of my car was passing her she swerved into my car her back tire hit my front bumper (you can see the rubber burned on it) it's super obvious where she made contact. She then proceeded to completely lose control of her car flying. She whipped hard back into the center lane sending her car flying into the far left lane and slamming into the median. I pulled to the right shoulder and came to a stop about 75 feet up from where she came to a stop on the railing.

I get out and head down to her car she's fine and calling the police. I basically said ok cool and went back to my car I didnt have a chance to take pics. I cross the highway again and look at my car it looks basically just alittle wounded. Nothing serious some rubber burn on my bumper and my front quarter was dented in and the headlight is broke. Her car was totally done for.

The state trooper shows up and takes all our statements. The trooper I had didnt seem to listen at all and basically just told me insurance will figure it out... ok cool. He tells me the other trooper will get with me and ask what happen. So she pulls up 20 mins later and walks up to me with a ticket.. and tells me "so you understand your at fault in my opinion so here's a cite for failure to maintain lane" I was flabbergasted. I didn't even get to say anything to her She just came out with that. So i ask her why i didnt get to tell her what happened? She brushed it off and said she got the story from the other driver and how her car looked. She never even looked at my car. I was completely blown. Now I'm scared instead will also find me at fault.

Iam I wrong here? Was I at fault? I was already completely in the 3rd lane when she hit me. I dont under stand it. The trooper said on the ticket I "rear ended" her when the damage on my car is on the side of the car and her damage was on the back quadrant. Not on the back at all.

    Any advice please?

I currently have good health insurance through my provider (hit my $5k deductible and have 100% coverage right now) - however, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (22 yo) at the start of COVID and have since seen several specialists, with a bunch of scans done.

I am also a nursing student and plan to quit my job to concentrate on school full time. I am wondering:

    a) When my insurance plan rolls into next year, will my current health insurance premium go up now that I have a pre-existing condition?

    b) When I quit my job and need another insurance either through Covered California or s new job, will I have to pay a higher than normal premium or have worse coverage because of my pre-existing condition?

    Thanks so much in advance!

If I get in a wreck and Geico tells me it's not my fault. Do I lose my accident forgiveness?
