Hit by USPS truck while car was parked, it seems as though Geico is using my own policy rather than USPS insurance

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 01:55 PM PDT

    Good afternoon, all!

Recently my 2020 mustang was hit pretty much dead on by a USPS truck while parked, resulting in $14k in repair costs. I got the drivers name and identifying info, contacted Geico, and they took it from there, saying USPS had a very specific way of submitting claims. Today, my insurance agent called me to let me know that my rental coverage would be capped on Wednesday and that I'd need to pay $45/day after that to keep the rental. Additionally, it seems like the body shop/my insurance is expecting me to pay the deductible when I pick up the car.

I'm not an expert at this stuff, but its my understanding that all of these costs should be levelled directly at USPS and not be coming out of my own pocket / be dictated by my own coverage values. Why then am I being told I'll need to pay a deductible and cover the cost of the remainder of my rental if the wreck was 100% the USPS driver's fault, he was on the scene and admitted guilt when the police arrived, and Geico was informed specifically of the party at fault and given the identifying info? It seems as though they're treating it like I was hit by an unidentified driver rather than knowing exactly who the at fault party was.

I called my agent back and left a message and am hoping to clarify this tomorrow, but if anyone has any insight it would be appreciated.

Edit: Happened in Silver Spring, MD

Have medicaid already but now have health issues, can I purchase insurance?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 04:06 PM PDT

Asking for a friend who doesnt have reddit so it may take me a day or so to gain extra information if asked.

    EDIT: In Louisiana, USA.

"Question: I have medicaid and now I'm having issues. I don't know what the issues are despite my multiple attempts to do so within the medicaid system. Now that it has been almost three months of pain with no end or official diagnosis in sight I am considering purchasing insurance with the help of my mother as I could not afford it otherwise. Can I have both medicaid and another insurance I pay for or will I have to drop medicaid? Does anyone have any insurance recommendations? I don't really know anything about it and never had it until my state expanded medicaid in 2016 so I am clueless but I need guidance and help. Also, will I be treated better by the system if I have insurance or is this just how everyone is treated?

Backstory: I am unsure what the health issues exactly are. I have had two sets of xrays, gone to two different physical therapists, a pain management doctor who turned me away because I did not have an MRI, three doctors, and four ER visits. Everyone has treated me like shit and has not really shown any sort of concern or thought of my issues except for one physical therapist who I see tomorrow for the second time. I also have a referral to have an ultrasound done, and the only orthopedic doctor in my area who takes medicaid will call me whenever I come up on the list but that could be a month or more from now. I have been in chronic pain for approx two and a half months. I just woke up like this one day and I don't know why or what is happening but I think muscles and a nerve is involved, but the other day I thought I felt a hard lump which makes me nervous I might have a malignant tumor"

    Rental car accident. Car totaled?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 04:08 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I was recently in an accident in a budget rental car. Since I do not own a car, my only insurance was my Mastercard credit card and I have already filed a claim with them. They should be able to cover damages up to 50k should it be approved once they get all the documents.

That being said, I'm appalled by Budget's assessment of the damage and their claim. They claim that my rental has been totaled. For all it's worth, I just damaged the front left bumper and there was some oil leaking (perhaps engine oil which I'm guessing can be fixed by plugging the leak). The tow truck driver kept the car running on battery (i.e. he had turned the ignition one level on) . Hence by the time I dropped the vehicle at the budget location, the battery had died(and given that this was my first accident, I was too shaken to think about this. I had even informed them that battery was dead). I'm pretty sure that this can be fixed by recharging it or in the worst case, replacing the battery. Nonetheless, I am almost certain that there was nothing wrong with the car to the point where it was determined to be totaled.

What do you suggest I do? Should I wait and see what happens or should I intervene? Will my credit card cover the entire amount even if Budget's assessment is ridiculous?

Lastly does anyone have a similar experience with a rental car? Does the cc generally cover everything or should I be concerned?

    Thanks

I have attached an image of the damage here

The accident happened in NY State. The vehicle was rented in New Jersey

    Additional Insured standard?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 11:07 AM PDT

We negotiated the lease with our landlord and there was nothing specifying to landloard as Additional Insured. Now they are asking for the insurance stating that the landlord is additional insured. When we sent an email questioning. We received a response as this is standard. Is that correct if they never requested it?

    Travel Insurance

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 10:46 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I am soon to travel to a country deemed high-risk (UK FCO advises against all but essential travel, due to COVID-19) so there are a limited number of insurers who provide cover.

One I have found, is very expensive but states cover is provided for medical expenses caused by or resulting from COVID-19, but they exclude SARS-COV-2 and any mutations of it.

Am I being daft, are COVID-19 and SARS-COV-2 not one and the same?

Insurance company for an online gaming friend gave him the wrong policy. He had a fire. They're only offering to refund since the last renewal. Any other options?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 03:36 PM PDT

So technically this is rental insurance, and you guys have home and homeowners insurance. I'm not sure what the difference is. Anyway, I know this is sort of a asking for a friend deal, but I'm hoping he may have some options. He Said he spoke to a lawyer already and he was out of luck. They will only refund to the renewal which was last month. Basically they sold him the wrong type of rental insurance. He has a mobile home and I think he said they gave him condo insurance. This place just burned down and he just started a new job, has no money, and has a kid he's trying to take care of as well and he has to take the kid to his part-time job with him. I suggested he contact the bar association and he said that's who he contacted. I'm hoping somebody might have another idea.

Can an agent "score a great premium" for a friend? (State Farm)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 08:51 PM PDT

    US/TX

Was talking with a friend today who is house shopping and his plan to bundle auto+home insurance came up. I told him what coverages I have and what I'd suggest for him, he said, "eh, I won't worry about it, I'll just leave it to my State Farm agent that always gets me the best deals since he's good friends with my ex-wife's dad (and he still likes me even after the divorce)."

I called immediate BS - I've assumed the agent can offer what underwriting allows, and that's the end of it. He swore up and down, "nope, while we were still married this agent got State Farm to offer us a home policy in an area that was otherwise not being offered and when I bought my car 3 years ago he got me a premium $400 less than the next closest I quoted, so I'm just keeping him to get the same kind of deal when I buy my house."

I said I'd check here to see if an agent really has any swing like that. Any chance there's truth to the story he's telling, or just a tall tale?

Delta Dental Insurance and turning 26. Please Help.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 08:30 PM PDT

First - I'm sorry if this post doesn't belong and feel free to delete if so. I'm new so I'm not sure.

Hi Guys! So I turned 26 in July while in the start of my Invisalign treatment. I'm on my parent's Delta Dental insurance plan but was told this coverage would end at the end of this year. I explained to the Delta lady that I was mid-treatment and would basically have to pay like $3,000 out of pocket if I lost it before my treatment was finished (May 2021). So I asked her if it would be possible if they could pay-out the entire coverage all at once instead of the usual monthly payments - that way the treatment will be completely covered before the end of the year. She actually said that she has witnessed that before and basically the employee (my dad in this case) has to write a letter to his employer requesting them to allow the insurance to do this. Has anyone done this or heard of this?? I'd love more info. Even info on how to write such a letter to the employer. TIA!!

Do I need my own flood insurance for my condo or is the RCBAP enough?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 08:22 PM PDT

My lender has the below requirements for flood insurance:

"The unit must be covered by the condominium association's Residential Condominium Building Association Policy or an acceptable private master policy covering the entire building. The coverage amount needed to meet our minimum requirements must be at least the lower of:

    1. The maximum coverage available per unit under the NFIP, which is currently $250,000*; or
    2. The replacement cost value of the building, divided by the number of units in the building."

I have confirmed that the RCBAP covers the replacement cost of the building. But my lender is insisting I need my own flood insurance as well. What gives?

    Auto Accident Claim

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 07:09 PM PDT

    Hello,

I was driving back home to CA from ID back in June, while passing through OR, the emergency exit window of my toy hauler broke free (Latch keeping it closed broke at the hinge), while I was slowing down and preparing to get off at the nearest exit which was a mile away, a car which was behind me decided to pass while the window was flapping around (it was a windy day, the hinge was at the top of the window so it would flap open fully then come back down). They pointed at the window and i gave them a thumbs up and they continued driving.

After they had passed I saw glass fall twice and hit the road both times. Once exited, I pulled into a gas station and started to take the window out so we could get home since that was the quickest way to get us back on the road. After about 20 minutes when I was about to leave the driver of the car pulled up and said a piece hit his car. There was a TON of small tiny scratches all over the car. My father-in-law was in a truck behind me and confirmed with me that he did not see any glass hit their car either.

I thought the guy was trying to scam me so I drove off until pulled over by an OR state trooper a while later. He got my info, the other parties info, and said he searched the other vehicle and couldn't find glass anywhere, also didn't understand how a piece of glass could do that much damage.

After getting home we didn't hear anything for over a month and then recently got contacted by my insurance company asking if I want them to pay out the almost $5000 in damage to the other vehicle. They said damage looked to be consistent with glass striking the vehicle, even though I never saw any hit the car.

So should I have my insurance pay this out or should I have them deny coverage to enterprise's car and risk a small claims suit? I'm not really sure what my options are at this point and it's more of a he said/she said deal. I would rather my rates not go up from paying out but in the back of my mind there is a possibility while trying to focus on the road, what the window was doing, and getting ready to pull off the exit that I Just didn't see a piece fall out.

    What are my options?

How long does it typically take for progressive to let me know if my car is totaled?

    Settlement Release

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 09:48 AM PDT

[WI] I am suing my roofing contractor because the roof he put on is leaking in 11 different places. It must be completely replaced as no other contractor will touch it.

I paid him $6800 to get the job started and have withheld the other half ($6800). I plan to sue him for recovery of the $6800 I already paid.

His insurance has been adamant they do not cover workmanship, only resultant damage. They have been good and will provide ACV of the drywall, insulation, etc.

When I receive and sign a release, I assume I am releasing the insurance company from further liability and their insured from liability for the damage... but will I still be able to sue him for the $6800?

    Car insurance question

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:07 PM PDT

I just moved out of CA to get away from a toxic situation. I just got a car and it is still registered in CA. When I purchased a car a few weeks before I moved (move was last minute) I got insurance for 6 months out. Can I keep my insurance as it meets the requirements for my new state or do I need to cancel my policy and get a partial refund and get new insurance?

If you have industry related experience, I would appreciate your advice.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:05 PM PDT

I'm a junior at Washington State being pressured to declare a major. I decided on a statistics/computer science major called Bachelor's of Science in Data Analytics. It requires Linear Algebra, Calclus 2, several courses in statistics and algorithms, and then a specialized track.

The specialized track choices include an actuary option (27 semester credits). I'm eyeing it as a potential career path.

More about my future plans: I intend to certify my competency in statistics with a graduate certificate in statistics at University of Calarado, Denver.

Essentially I'm eyeing the idea of creating statistical algorithms for insurance industry. Here's my biggest concern:

I'm aware insurance industry doesn't like uncertainty. Therefore I'm worried their ideal candidate is a fulltime office worker. My biggest desires in a career choice are in descending order:

    1. Remote work so that I may travel or live where I wish when I wish it. (My idea of being truly free)

    2. No fulltime job as to persevere what little time I have left in this world. (Note: I am happy to do my 6 to 12 months of training fulltime, but wish to work part time after that).

If you have industry related experience, I would appreciate your advice.

    Umbrella Insurance Confusion

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 08:16 AM PDT

Hey Reddit fam! I'm a 24 y/o new grad and I'm looking to have some financial peace of mind with great insurance coverage.

    • Since umbrella covers auto, and most insurance companies don't give umbrella policies unless you have high auto coverage ... wouldn't it be the cheapest/smartest idea to get as low auto liability coverage as possible to qualify for umbrella and then get a $1M+ umbrella policy?

    • Say I move to a city and don't need my car and no longer need auto insurance, but I need renters insurance. Is it worth it to get umbrella coverage without a car?

Purchasing an Auto Insurance; Turning 25 In November

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:35 PM PDT

I am planning on purchasing a 6 month auto policy (I think that is how you say it?) from Geico for a 2010 Toyota Highlander I am purchasing. I am a 24 y/o male in Philadelphia and will be turning 25 on Nov. 15 of this year. If I purchase it tomorrow, will I be paying my current rate until the policy is over in February, or will it automatically decrease come after my birthday? Do other companies offer anything like a 2 month policy if it doesn't decrease I can purchase in the meantime? Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you!

Can my auto insurance company deny me coverage if I don’t live at my permanent address listed on my drivers license?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:26 PM PDT

I don't want to list my current house that I'm renting in another city, since I may not stay here for long. However, this is where my car stays every night and this is the city where the car is driven 90% of the time. However, that address doesn't match my address on my drivers license, which is my parents' house where I used to live but do not anymore.

My insurance company just refused coverage for me since my renewal is coming up. I have never made a single claim in the 4 years I've been with them and I pay my premium in full every year. What the hell??!!!

Edit: I live in Ontario, Canada

    Progressive home warranty

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:14 PM PDT

I have a new homeowners policy thru progressive for my new home. Recently had some septic issues that the licensed septic inspector should have caught - I'll be following up with the licensing board.

I bought the policy thru progressive but it is actually through Plymouth Rock. I did add the home systems coverage, which does state it includes septic.

My question is - does using that "home warranty" count as a claim against my normal policy - thus running the risk of a drop. Or is it a separate thing?

Also, if I call to inquire with progressive, will they count that as a claim? I know some companies have that practice.

    Thanks!

Condo Insurance coverage denied for unit with no thermostat?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 03:32 PM PDT

I'm a first time homeowner, closing on a condo on October 15. I went to Progressive (my car insurer) to get condo insurance but was told that none of their underwriters would cover my unit because heating is not thermostatically controlled (it's heated by central boiler/radiators in the unit). The building was built in 1927, so it's obviously old, but it's been well maintained and the boiler was actually replaced last week (with a 30 year expected life).

While I understand that if I lived somewhere very cold my insurer would want to be sure that pipes didn't burst, I live in Seattle where that's not much of a risk.

Is this a thing? Insurer's having policies preventing them from insuring units that don't have a thermostat?

Advice on under 25 first time insurance

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:45 PM PDT

I'm 23 and moving out of my parents house. I will be renting and need to commute to work. My dad is offering to lend me his SUV but I will be responsible for separate insurance.

Ideally - I would only drive it for up to 1 year and by that time I would have saved to buy my own car.

Questions I have: 1. Do I need to change the title to my name ? It is under my dads name. This would mean paying around $500 for title change and new plates, and I would rather save this money since I am not buying it from my dad, just borrowing

    1. Does it make sense to pay more to get comprehensive and collision insurance for my situation? I want to save money but also want to make sure I return the suv to my dad in the same condition as he gave it to me after the year

More details - - 2010 Lincoln Navigator - max value ~ $7000 - my daily commute is 25 miles round trip on the highway - vehicle will be parked on the street and not the best neighborhood - Illinois based - been driving since I was 13 with no tickets or crashes
