Tough Situation. Great Company and Product, Horrible Management

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 06:04 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Keeping this as anonymous as possible, but I am in a tight situation. I am currently the top rep at my company, and have been since I was promoted from a BDR to AE (approx 3 years). I work at a rapidly growing company where change is constant, and while it's been a good ride, and I've made a decent amount of money... Well, let's just say this Sunday, like every other Sunday I get filled with anxiety and dread for the upcoming week. Can't sleep at night, very unmotivated, anxious, feel a bit out of control.

The anxiety stems from my manager, he is a great sales person, he gets results, but I do not enjoy the way he treats me, or others on the team. Basically he is an extreme micro manager - needs to read every important email, review every presentation, every contract, before it goes out, and I would say 90% of the time he will say how it's all wrong, you're not thinking strategically, absolutely lose his mind over a typo or small mistake, etc. Even on calls, he will text me during the calls saying how x and y is so fucked up and everything is fucked on this deal, how could you do this.. etc... He treats every rep on the team like this, not just me. We had one member just quit and another get fired out of the blue earlier this year, with no communication whatsoever from management.

I have found myself becoming more and more anxious going on calls with him and it's eroding my confidence, any upcoming customer call with him I get anxious about because it seems like there is always something wrong.

Alternatively, I've worked with the CEO of my company, presented decks myself to customers with him on the line, and feel zero anxiety or doubt. Any other managers I am completely fine with and do not feel this.

Everyone on my team feels the same way, most say they always feel they are walking on eggshells.

The tough thing is this hard manager is occasionally really nice, easy to talk to and will be a friend to me - But it makes me feel like I am in some sort of abusive relationship.

I am wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or has advice for mine. The thought of working for someone else brings me joy, but at the same time I really believe in the company and our product.

How does a start up hire a freelance or commission only salesman?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 07:02 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I love this subreddit. I've never posted before, I mostly come here for the awesome advice. Sorry for format and spelling, French is my maiden language and I am using a phone. Hello from Montreal!

I used to be a salesperson (mostly clothes and electronics) until I went to university. I am now a small business owner, we do social media marketing and influence marketing. It's a passion project, we've been going at it for a year now and things are really taking off. The dream honestly (no humble brag just incredibly happy to be here in my business, this isn't my first try) anyhow I just wanted to add the contexte because like most small business owners, it is my baby and I want what's best for it.

I need to hire a salesperson. Someone better than me. Someone who understands the basics of how sales work but also how to find clients like we do and someone who won't be scared by being asked for autonomy and a strong sense of initiative. A mini me of sorts but way better and more experienced.

Thing is I have been looking for two months now. I've asked everyone I know. I tried putting an ad once and that went bad. I felt like I was stupid. I got like 100 candidates from no experience to people asking me questions about the job I couldn't answer (MQL to SQL? I still don't know how to answer that one ...)

So that's what my question is. How do I find that person? I have calculated a commission scale that I feel is fair but I want someone to have enough experience so they can tell me if it works or not and help me lay the foundations to a fair commission pay. Someone driven by success not just money. For me, as a service business, everyone I work with is super important to me. I treat all our subcontractors like hires and let them know how much I appreciate them. They get special thanks and appreciation on a regular basis. I want to actually eventually hire all of them, give them insurance and benefits and they all know it. My team is my biggest strength and I want to find someone who can help boost all that. Am I asking for too much too soon?

Thank you for guiding me with your advice!!

Is clinical or sales experience more advantageous to get into medical sales?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:35 AM PDT

Long story short - ive got a role as a theatre health care assistant in a private hospital with excellent training and company culture (Ramsay healthcare). I will gain lots of experience in terms of being in theatres observing many orthopaedic surgeries such as knee, hip, spine and even eyes and plastic surgery. I would also learn how to interact with surgeons and the insides of how medical sales work with doctors etc.,

on the other hand, there's an area sales manager role for vetplus - selling vet nutriceuticals to vet practices. the pay is almost double compared to the HCA and I will be in so much pressure for an entry role. its covid aswell so I probably wont start off my career strong.

the goal really is to get into medical device sales in the future, in a job requirement for medical sales it requires theatre experience and sales experience (I have neither atm).

I was wondering which experience would be more advantageous? ?

PS I do have a degree and have just graduated in july

What's a day like doing solar sales?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:15 AM PDT

I'm interested in doing solar sales, and I'd really like to be the person who does home visits and talks with the customer. Do you do this kind of work?

I'm curious if there are salaried jobs with heath benefits doing this type of sales. I don't mind doing some office work, but I like the variety of having the home visits (outdoors with masks) as a part of my day.

Should I be looking in my area or remote for an sdr job?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:39 AM PDT

I'm using LinkedIn to try and connect with people from companies that I'm interested in. I'm looking for an sdr role at an saas company. I'm just confused on one thing, though. Should I only be contacting people from companies that are near me? Or should I just go for everyone in the hopes of landing a remote job? I have no saas sales experience, by the way. I'm completely new to it and looking to break in as an sdr.

    State Farm Insurance

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:31 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I've been trying to find a job in a new city and recently was given an opportunity I would like to take but I'm unsure of. Basically, it's been rough getting work in a state hit hard by the pandemic and my friend offered to speak with his grandfather about helping me out. His grandfather got far in State Farm and even has a building named after him. His grandfather likes me so there's a good chance I could get the job with his help. But there's the thing- the job is selling State Farm insurance. I'd love to do it but I've never sold insurance.

So, I'm left with some questions... Is it alright for me to start with no experience? What can I look into so I have a better idea of what I'm selling? What's the procedure for selling insurance?

I don't want to make his grandfather look bad by vouching for me if it turns out I'm not up to the task. Any help is appreciated, thank you all very much.

    The crazy world of construction

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:14 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I work in a very unconventional company that manufacturers aluminium systems like shade pergolas, partners with a manufacturer of aluminium profiles and coincidentally we also supply world class marble. The CEO is my neighbor, an insane workaholic who has worked on mega luxury projects for the insanely rich in Asia and has his connections.

He doesn't speak English so he's asked me to expand into the EU, US and Canada market and try to secure major or minor projects that could use the above. I'm doing my homework but what would you guys do in my situation? How would you go about this type of challenge? TIA you guys are awesome

Why Does the Timely Rollout of Sales Commissions Matter?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:23 AM PDT

    What to say...what to say?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:14 AM PDT

So, I've been working on a project with a customer for quite some time now, and we finally moved to an order. Or so we thought... Unfortunately, the customer has been completely quiet over the past 4 weeks, and I need to figure out what their update is. Can you say on an e-mail you are ''disappointed'' in the lack of communication from the client, or is that not our place to say?

What I want to convey is that the lack of communication is not in-line with what we would like to achieve with our partnership. Any ideas?

    Should I pass this opportunity?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 10:28 PM PDT

For context, I have no sales experience. I've been lurking on this forum for the most part and have gleaned a lot of great tips from you guys. It's been a great help with all the interviews that I've been able to score so far.

Anyway, tomorrow I have an interview with a marketing agency. On LinkedIn, it shows they've been around for roughly 2 years. They only have 5 employees--only 3 of them are displayed on their actual website. On top of that, I've received a bajillion emails all week saying the same thing, something along the lines of--"Due to time constraints, this will be a group interview at x time. Click this link if you are interested in this role. Watch this beforehand."

Based on what you guys have said, I should run. Because this is a start-up. Right? Other forums have also said that group interviews are a red flag in itself, especially within the US. Also, within their "Watch this beforehand" video, they mentioned something about buying the training. I'm confused because they said they would train us and even went in-depth about the training, too!

    Medicare or Life Insurance Sales?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 06:11 PM PDT

Hello, I was laid off as the industry I was in took a HUGE hit due to Covid-19 (dining/foodservice). I have several months experience selling life insurance as an intern in college, and may consider trying this again full-time. To go back into the industry, I will need to go through education/licensing again.

During my research, I stumbled upon Medicare sales opportunities and I am interested in learning more before I start pursuing licensing.

Can anyone share this experience selling Medicare or life insurance? Has anyone done both? What are some pros and cons? Any advice is appreciated!

    What will it take?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 09:45 PM PDT

Sales managers, if someone were to cold call you about a sdr opening - what would it take for you to consider them for the role?

What would you like them to touch on?

All others - if you were a hiring manager what would you like from someone cold calling about a sdr job?

Can you tell I'm going to be cold calling some managers tomorrow? I'm nervous.

    O&G Sales to Software Sales

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 05:06 PM PDT

Hi all - my friend currently works for a parts manufacturer. As I'm sure many of you know - the industry Is running on fumes, and he's looking to pivot.

He has over 5-years of experience selling into Fortune 500 companies (outside sales, AE-similar role, and also exp. as a sales manager).

    My questions are:

    1) does moving to software sales make sense? 2) if it does make sense - what roles would he look at? Would he have to start over entirely?
