How do I tell my boss that one of his clients made me a large offer to work for them & I want to take it?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 11:04 AM PDT

I work for a medium-sized marketing agency as director of digital marketing.

I received a message over LinkedIn from a recruiter asking me if I know anyone looking for a marketing director position. I asked him how much they were offering and the number he gave me was 3 times the amount I'm currently making.

As it goes with recruiters they don't tell you the name of the company until you & the company are willing to meet for an interview.

After sending the recruiter my resume the company (large manufacturing company) wanted to meet with me immediately. The recruiter gave me the name and location of the company and that's when I realized it may be an issue.

I went and met with their CEO who met me at the front door with a massive smile and said "when I heard it was you I was so happy!"

We sat & chatted about his business like we were old friends & he even said he didn't feel like this was a job interview.

I always give the impression during job interviews that I really want the job, If they make me an official offer that's when I start thinking about whether or not it makes sense.

The CEO called me the next day and made me an official offer - They would pay me an amount that is 2.5x the amount I make now. (I negotiated a private office and a bit more compensation :)

The question for anyone who made it this far is, I really want this job...

Is it right for me to take it?

Am I stepping on my previous bosses toes?

Is this a blatant non compete?

Most importantly - How do I tell him about the job and that I want to take it?

Asking for a Raise in a Unique Situation

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 03:23 AM PDT

Hi all! I'd like to ask for a raise at my company but have a unique challenge. I'm American but live abroad in a country where the cost of living is incredibly low, and am significantly underpaid for my position, which is for an American company. The argument when I was first hired is that "we pay based on the market you live in, not for the average salary of the position". I had to accept as it was a unique opportunity for me, however now that I've been with the company for over a year and have established myself I'd like to ask for a raise.

Any ideas on how I can dismantle the "we pay based on the market you live in" argument? I would understand if I was natively from the country I am living in, but the fact of the matter is the job I'm doing and the qualities I have as an employee shouldn't be defined by where I live. I'd love to create a document demonstrating all the value I bring to the company, but I'd like to tackle head on their argument. If they would even just pay me 10-15k more a year, it would still be low by American standard but high for me and I feel like it's a perfect compromise. Love to hear thoughts here! Thanks!

    Airlines...

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 02:33 AM PDT

Airlines are hammered right now and historically low levels. But I can imagine whoever is selling from here must be selling for a loss, therefore reminds me of a panic seller mindset.

All the rich guys already left with the first Covid dump. This second dump must be sellers who believe they will be bankrupt and not bailed out.

Think about it. Do you think Germany will dump Lufthansa and suddenly will start to fly with Emirates or Saudi Arabian Airlines? Do you think these airlines are not linked to any national pride? Do you think they will let them die that easy? I believe worst thing that will happen is state will buy them and they will become state owned companies, or they will print money and give to them.

World is too big to travel by car or boat, there is no going back to stone age. Therefore I believe these second dump sellers will regret so much when world starts to learn to live with Covid, or a vaccine is found, which is not too far away considering there is already 42 vaccines on trial with humans right now.

I am curious if I am the only one thinking this way. What's your perspective on this?

FYI, some US airlines still in the green compared to March, but EU is lower right now.

Advice for selling a Piano Client List?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 11:58 PM PDT

I've been tutoring for 6 years from my home studio and am making the transition to full-time work. How do I practically sell my client list? The teacher would have to have their own studio and be close to where I live (Australia) or travel to student's homes. What usually happens with this? Any experience or tips?

Weird Question... Top reasons business people go to prison?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 10:28 AM PDT

    Hello all!

So this came across my mind because my father went to prison for money laundering, tax evasion, and mortgage fraud after my parents split up. Parents split up when I was 4, he went to prison when I was 6 or 7. He's been out for a few years but never have talked to him, I'm 21 now. He owned about 1,000 units (apartments and single family homes) - I still think he owns them?

I do online marketing and work with travel content creators. It's always been in the back of my mind what happened to my Dad and for me to be as ethical as possible in all aspect of life and business.

My big question is.. What are the top reasons business owners go to prison? And what mistakes can I avoid as a young business owner?

    17 risk taking

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 10:17 PM PDT

I have 3k in an emergency fund, and 2k in savings. I'm trying to grow my savings to 10k in a year. I am going to make a car detailing business. Materials are north of $800. Should I just pull 1k out of emergency fund and buy the materials for my business? 3k seems like a lot considering I'm under 18. It's about 3 months of what I make independently. I want to kick off my business immediately instead of waiting around for my checking to grow next paycheck. If I wait to order everything in a month then I may not have the same motivation to start a business.

Question about LLC and Business credit card

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 07:27 PM PDT

Hello Everybody! First off, thank you for taking the time to read my question! I appreciate the help!

My best-friend about a month ago started a online retailer for a particular trading card game selling singles (No its not Pokemon/Magic etc. any of the big ones - those markets are already established) This is for a currently growing card game. He's been having some great success with it, and we have decided to bring me onboard as another owner to help fine tune things, build the growing community of players, and grow the business.

My partner already formed a LLC in Oklahoma - in the research I've done I know we need to reform that LLC into a Multi-member LLC. However here is one of the tricky parts - I currently reside in Colorado and plan on relocating my family to Texas in like a year or so. I can't seem to find a straight answer for this on how to do this. The business is staying in Oklahoma its just my part since we will be partners in different states. How do we go about doing this without getting in trouble from the Goverment or IRS knocking our door come tax season!

2nd question - We are looking into getting a Business credit card to have all our purchases centralized and trackable. My partner when he created this business was applying to use a personal card and was getting rejected (For the life of me I cannot recall why, it wasn't bad credit, I'll ask and address the answer in the comments) anyways after he did that, he just said - I'll just get a business credit card - well he got rejected for that, for being rejected for the personal card to many times, haha. Got stuck in that cycle. Will reforming "reset" this cycle - or do I need to be the one to apply for the business credit card this time?

It sounds like we are a bunch of "ding-dongs" we aren't (at least some days, haha) just trying to get some of this complexity cleared up so we can continue to strive for success and we want to do it correctly. No jail time us for. Thank you all for your input!

Question about job interviews in the business field?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:12 PM PDT

I'm in school right now for supply chain management and I'm looking for an internship, so I have a career fair soon. The registration form asks for hobbies and I put video games and said that especially since the pandemic it's been a good way to still have fun with friends without being unsafe. Is this okay to put? I know video games isn't the most impressive hobby but idk what else to put

17 years old, detailing business... how much do I charge?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 05:23 PM PDT

Hey y'all! I'm 17 and I need to make $10,000 this year I already have $5k in savings but 3k of that is my emergency fund so I need to make around 8k. I'm wanting to open up my own little interior car detailing business, so I can quit my supervisor position at a fast food joint. Materials consist of many different chemical agents, and a nice steam cleaner and vacuum. The total of all the supplies is north of $600. How much should I charge for detailing per car?
