Auto insurance - big price difference between quotes. Am I missing something?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:47 PM PDT

To preface, I recently moved from FL to MI. I've been insured through Geico for about 15 years, but when I made the move my 6-month premium jumped from about $250 to $1225. Needless to say, I've started to look around at other insurance companies. I have a virtually spotless driving record (never gotten a ticket, no accidents, never filed an auto insurance claim).

I got a quote from Progressive for the same coverage limits for only about $350 per 6 months. And I got a quote from Liberty Mutual for the same coverage for about $1000 per 6 months.

Now I was expecting some variation in price between insurance companies, but the Progressive quote really blew me away. I have verified that the coverage limits are the same as what I currently have, but it appears Progressive charges a lot less (Geico charges me $507.10 for collision with a $500 deductible, Progressive is quoting $72.00 with a $500 deductible broad form). The quote from Progressive looks too good to be true. Am I missing something?

Dentist denying insurance even though they're in-network

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 04:20 AM PDT

I'm currently looking to get my wisdom teeth (in Ohio) removed and this provider is claiming that my insurance plan does not cover the procedure. However I've called the insurer (Anthem) and they confirmed with me that my plan covers the procedure and verified that the dentist is in-network. So I told the dentist that my plan does cover some of the cost and asked them to call the insurance company to verify with them. However it seems like they didn't called them and now bringing up the fact that I have a waiting period of 12months before the insurance goes into effect even though I have this insurance for 3 years already.

Is there a reason why the dentist would try to refuse the insurance?

Pros and cons to having all insurance at the same provider?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:49 AM PDT

As the title says - what are the pros and cons of having all our insurance policies at the same provider?

Yes, there are usually savings when having all insurance policies at the same place, but what else is there? Are there any downsides to it?

    EDIT: Location is Scandinavia, Europe.

Dental Insurance question regards to Root Canal

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:03 AM PDT

So my partner needs a root canal. We have BlueShield PPO.

Annual max is $1000 Deductible is $50

Root canal waiting period is 3 months but for a crown, it is 12 months.

So he will be getting the root canal done at the 3 month mark.

So that leaves us having to pay for the crown.

Does the deductible or annual max remotely apply to the crown and help the cost of the full price?

The reason why I ask is because I never seem to see my medical payments (not talking about copays. I know that's not included) ever go towards my deductibles so now I feel very confused.

Can car insurance go up for a driver no longer on a policy?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:41 PM PDT

If a driver gets in an at fault accident, and then leaves the policy before a new 6 month bill, will the cost for the remaining drivers be increased in most circumstances assuming no accident forgiveness?

I've been with one insurer for a long time, had no accidents or tickets for 5 years, and was going to start looking for a better price. My sister, who was on my insurance, just wrecked my car (her fault). Will this claim affect my rates with other insurers? Do I have to disclose? Will they know?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:04 PM PDT

Florida - I live with my sister, and allowed her to drive my car, and she was on my insurance. I'm going to remove her from my insurance and stop allowing her to drive my car. I'd like to shop around for a better rate. Will I have to disclose this claim to other insurers? Will it affect my offers?

    Wisconsin PSI Exams

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:13 PM PDT

I'm not really sure where to go with this so I'll come here. I'm in the process of becoming a insurance agent with State Farm. Got my certificate through Kaplan for property and casualty. Now you're supposed to take your exams through PSI. This company is by far the worst company I have ever worked with in my 28 years of living. And I have been around about just every industry you could think of. Not only is their customer service horrific. You have long wait times. Their practice exams don't work. And the material on the practice exams from what I've read is not even on the test. Now I've taken the both of the exams twice. And I've gotten the same exact scores. When I've been getting good results back on my practice exams. The multiple choice questions are worded terribly and have multiple answers that could apply correctly to the question. Being based in Wisconsin and also this being the first time I've ever been involved in the insurance world. Has anyone else had these issues? Is there another place where I can take these tests other than going through PSI? Is it true that there is a testing curve? Like this all just seems like the biggest money scam there is. I apologize if I come off as unintelligent or misinformed but I'm new to this and I feel incredibly short shafted.

    Rat infestation after wildfire

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:36 PM PDT

My home just barely survived a wildfire but between the time of the fire and the time the mitigation companies could come out, there has been a rat infestation. I know renter's insurance doesn't cover a rat infestation but if it's due to the wildfire and due to the lapse in time of getting the mitigation company to the property and another delay by them, will insurance replace any of the items left in the house? I don't feel comfortable keeping anything after it's been sitting in rat poop for 2 weeks.

    Dental benefits struggle

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Hi, I live in Canada. I signed up for late enrollment dental benefits through Manulife about 1 year and 7 months ago. One of the conditions is that for the first year of coverage I would only have 125 dollars worth of coverage, then after 1 year I would have 80 percent. Wasn't a big deal at the time as I didn't need immediate work done.

1 year and 7 months later I finally get some work done thinking I have 80 percent coverage. I then find out the next day that Manulife is only going to cover 125 dollars worth of the 800 dollar bill. I even have an email from febuary of 2019 saying that after 1 year my coverage goes up to 80 percent.

Was there a mistake on their end or are they just straight up trying to scam me?

Why is insurance so high on 3rd vehicle?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:55 PM PDT

My husband and I recently bought a third vehicle that our son will eventually drive once he gets his license. Our other vehicles are a 2009 F150 and a 2016 Toyota Highlander, and we just added a 2007 Toyota Camry. The monthly premium on the Camry was ridiculously high, even though it's the oldest /least expensive of the 3 vehicles. I can understand why it would be high if our son was already 16 and if we added him to the policy, but we hadn't even added him yet. Can anyone help me understand why this would be?

    Edit: I live in Minnesota.

Neighbor Sprinkler System Activated, Flood Damage - Renters Insurance

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:22 PM PDT

    Edit: located in Virginia

Apartment sprinkler system was fully activated in a unit that is two units next to ours (>20 story building). I am currently staying out of state. I spoke with the building manager, they said it was contained to that unit and there was some flood damage to our unit. From my understanding, our damage should be minimal (carpet, maybe TV/outlets ruined). This is no problem on our side, building manager confirmed any valuable papers were okay.

Our renters insurance covers 30k I believe.

What are next best steps? I am under 25 and have contact with people who are somewhat knowledgeable, just never been through this before.

Also, the building email said it started from a candle at 5am. Knowing our neighbor behavior, this is clearly false, is there any recourse? Does it matter? My understanding is there will be a fire marshall opinion or something similar. Regardless, no injuries and seems there is limited damage to us.

Thanks all, sorry for rambling as I am in a bit of disarray but otherwise in a good state.

CT - A few high level questions about long-term care insurance

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:50 AM PDT

Mother, 71, has been paying into long-term care insurance for nearly 20 years. Full trust, POA, HC Reps have long been established, but I believe we are now getting to a position where we might need to look into this policy she has been paying into, and possibly start to utilize it. I'm going to be getting more details on the policy in place this week, so I don't have a lot of information other than the premium is roughly $330/month. We obviously would like her to be able to stay in her house as long as possible. Here are some vague, high level question if anyone has and idea:

    - When I call about this policy, what are the pertinent questions I need to ask? Terms, monthly payout amounts, etc?

    - What type of care might a policy with the premium above entail? The policy details are obviously paramount here, however I can say that whenever we were given the choice to "pay more per month" for something "better", we did. In talking with others, a lot of people with LTC insurance choose to pay for "in home" visits and care out of pocket first, and save the LTC insurance for when she actually has to go into a facility for the long hall - so there is a strategy to all this.

    - My sister has been staying with her for the last few months, basically doing everything she can't do herself (shopping, driving, appointments, dog care, medications, etc.) I handle all finances. My mother can still do some things herself, i.e., get around, exercise, dress, bath and eat, at least for now. This is becoming more difficult for my sister while trying to also maintain part time work elsewhere. Can we set up an arrangement, through TLC insurance or otherwise, for my sister to be legally and officially qualified to be compensated for the care she is already administering anyways in the state of CT? If so, what does that process look like?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Understanding Self Insured Employer

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:57 AM PDT

The company I work for is relatively big (~2000? Employees) but my particular union is about 1200 employees. They are self insured under a plan from Blue Cross Blue Shield. So doing my homework and understanding how self insured works, brings me to my question. We are all contributing 10% (~$45) weekly of "the cost of the health plan". Well the company isn't necessarily purchasing a plan for every single employee. It pays the doctors bill after you go, aka self insured, blue cross being the middle man.

So in reality we are paying 10% of what the plan is valued at which is ~$20k , not what the plan actually costs... I'm I right? When asking the company, blue cross, etc about 10% of what number that we are paying, no one will give me an answer. I'm I understanding this correctly?

Dumb: Car stolen, no comprehensive, title not transferred yet so can't file report. Any moves?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:56 AM PDT

Project car got stolen yesterday in an extremely low-crime area; Didn't have comprehensive on it. I also haven't transferred the title yet, but do have a bill of sale and signed title. The thief had escaped a nearby hospital and found the keys I left in it, doors unlocked and windows down (was airing out cleaning products from earlier in the day). So basically the most owner-at-fault theft possible. Great. Obviously I can't try to update my insurance to include comprehensive same-day since the report, when filed, will include the theft date, and that's kind of shitty and was my fault regardless. Officer advised I get a "rushed title transfer" and make the report quickly, which I'll do. Any weird tricks with this odd scenario? I honestly just want some money back for the car, was about to sell it at a loss.

    Thanks.

Someone just stole my 2500$ roadbike. How do I file a claim on my renters insurance?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 10:53 AM PDT

I have USAA, my deductable is 250$.

    What are my first steps?

    EDIT - Spokane Washington.

The person used bolt cutters, and actually left them on the ground, they have not been touched. The cut lock is still as it was left. I only discovered this 20 minutes ago.

Edit 2. Police contacted me, precursor to a police report is sorted out, evidently there's so understaffed in Spokane that I won't have anybody contacting me until Tuesday. Not a clue why.

An adjuster for my insurance called my wife, and said they would cover $700, unfortunately the frame alone still retails for $2,100. She forgot to put that into Langston pro, versus normal Langston frame. I'm not sure how much of a difference that's going to make though.

unfortunately I think I'm just going to have to suck it up and write it off because the deductible is 250. And covid-19 has sucked my account dry lately.

Edit 3 : okay fair. Guys I realize I am naive. I'm 37 years old, and I've never been in a car accident. I've never had to file an insurance claim because I am insanely meticulous with everything that I try and do so it doesn't blow up in my face. when something trivial like my bike gets stolen, also my trek mountain bike was stolen 3 years ago before I had renter's insurance, I just dismissed it and thought I learned from The experience because I forgot to lock the bike. I did my due diligence I thought I was on the right side of logic here. No I don't understand the right process for this crap that's why I'm asking these questions.

I find it really hard to believe that I've already gotten three private messages saying that I'm the retard.

You're probably right guys. by all means tell me how to live my life differently.

For those of you that have helped I really appreciate the input. Your perspective that you are providing has been very beneficial. It's helped me get in contact with the right departments and proceeded to get this resolved even if it is just to document the issue for future reference. If there's anything I've learned from this...

    It's that i don't know what the f*** I'm doing anymore.

So if you have any other perspectives please comment accordingly. Life lessons suck.

Did anyone else try Root Test Drive?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 09:33 AM PDT

I'm a couple trips away from the end, but my score suddenly went from 10/10 to 9/10. It says my smooth braking is slightly low. But I brake way smoother then pretty much everyone around me, but I live in Baltimore and people always dart out into the street or cut me off. Is there anything I can do to improve the score. If I brake any earlier It'll become more dangerous rather then safer. Also, does this thing really k ow who is driving? My mom drives like she's crazy (so do I when I force this app closed and turn off all my data lol), but I sometimes forget to disable the app, and my score has gone down and trips were added when I wasn't driving.

Hood damaged by object down up off road by car ahead of me. Is this still considered a comprehensive for an insurance claim?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:57 AM PDT

Driving on the highway and object was thrown up off the road and struck my hood. ( Have dashcam video!) The car only has 5,000 mi and not a mark on it until now. I think most of the marks will buff off because they seem to be almost sort of rubbery. It does look like there is one long scratch that won't buff out. I'm not even sure I want to get it painted because the car is so new and I hate to remove the factory finish, but I know it will irk me forever when I take care of it. I have taken excellent care of it, hand wash only.

I worked in insurance many years ago and flying object was a comprehensive claim. I only have a $200 deductible. We did have a claim last year that I am not sure how it was coded as far as liability because it was a driver versus driver situation, although our version logically is the only one that could be true. It was a title 59 claim in New Jersey and I have not had any success with the municipality that caused the damage. I have yet to file small claims.

So my two concerns are whether flying object is still considered to comprehensive, and whether my rates could be affected by this type of claim. I have a good company that didn't used to raise rates on every little thing, but these days they may be.

I guess my additional concern is whether I should just go have this buffed out and waxed and live with it or if I should take it to a body shop. flying object

Roof replacement - Is this how an insurance claim normally works?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 05:55 AM PDT

In Texas. We have Liberty Mutual. Knowing our roof is missing shingles and we've had hail from various storms, we decided to call them to inquire about it. They set up a time for someone to come check it out, which turned out to be someone from a local roofing company. He got up there and inspected and then said he would give the information to the insurance company and then we could move forward with replacing the roof. The next day Liberty Mutual informed us that minus our $2300 deductible, we were covered for $9300 , the estimate that roofing company gave them to replace the roof. They asked if we wanted to move ahead with it, using that company, or if we wanted to find another roofing company. We told them we wanted to talk about it.

I thought an adjuster and/or inspector that actually works for Liberty Mutual would come out and determine if it was covered and for how much. Should we have gotten some kind of report from them that shows what this roofing company is going to install for that $9300? Do we get a say in what brand or quality shingles they use? I looked at our account online and it shows the claim, but there's no report, details, etc. Should we call other roofing companies to come give estimates...and what if their estimates are all higher than the roofing company Liberty Mutual sent out? We've never made a claim for the house before...is this how it's supposed to be going?
