This is an email that EY sent out. This year there were no bonuses, no raises, and now a request to work to an extra 5 hours a week? Honestly, the audacity. There are people on the bench. Note: EY changed the policy of a standard 40 hours to 45 to compensate for "overtime."

    COVID/Sick Leave update

I responded to this manager that I'm not super comfortable providing medical info and to have the engagement partner reach out if it was necessary. I reported him to HR and I got a huge $100k bonus and this manager now got fired and his license revoked and now from what I hear is living in a broken down tent under a bridge in City Park.

I kid. I kid. Not to kill your justice boner, but I never got a response from the manager and the EP never reached out. I also did not report to HR. I did; however, get an email from a Senior Manager on the engagement that I don't work with much that expressed his sympathies— apparently his sister came down with COVID and it was rough.

Anyway, I'm doing fine. Semi functional as long as I keep up on ibuprofen and DayQuil seems to help symptoms. Sleeping lots which is always nice.

Ps. Thanks for the gold/hugs/whatever awards. But you can have them back if it means I stop being sick. Haha.

It is AMAZING how long I can stare at the tax form instructions and guidance to end up only having about 50% confidence in my answer.

Put notice in at B4, leaving right after October 15

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:10 AM PDT

Pointless thread but just need to get this out.

B4 tax manager here, I've just put in notice to leave after the October 15th deadline and it feels great!! 6 years here at B4 working crazy long hours and always putting work first ... and I'm so glad to finally leave. Will be joining a smaller public firm and I know busy season hours will still be tough but I'm confident they will not be as bad as my current B4 firm nor as long. To all of you grinding out the B4, best of luck!!

After an incredibly long and frustrating process, I finally received my CPA license number today!!!!

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:02 PM PDT

Words cannot describe how happy I am for this process to be over. From start to finish, the California Board of Accountancy was absolutely terrible to work with and I am so relieved to be done. For everyone still going through it, stay strong and stick with it. You will eventually get your license. Below is a timeline for anyone curious about processing times during COVID: - Submitted the completed application (all exams done, including ethics, all education and experience support was received by CBA, finger printing was done, check was included): April 24, 2020 - Check cashed: June 3, 2020 - Initial notice from CBA that my application was under review: June 19, 2020 - Notice that experience & 3 1/3 education units were missing: July 28, 2020 - Resent signed experience form via email and contested education deficiencies: July 28, 2020 - Experience was accepted: Aug 21, 2020 - Education was re-reviewed and approved (they admitted to making an error first time around): Aug 24, 2020 - Application approved and initial license fee was requested: Aug 24, 2020 - Check delivered to CBA: Aug 27, 2020 - Check cashed: Sept 3, 2020 - CPA License number received: Sept 21, 2020

Regardless of which firm you’re at, if times are good or times are bad, the common thread that ties us all to each other is that the beatings will continue until morale improves.

Accidentally selected all 4 CPA exams when submitting to NASBA

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 08:19 PM PDT

I had planned to just take FAR, but per the NASBA site I have to pay for all 4 at once. I know I probably fucked up but does anyone have experience with this? Would I have to submit another application?

I sent them an email but I'm not sure if it will do anything.

Struggling/lost newly qualified ACCA - further studies/general advice?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:43 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Based in Dublin, Ireland. Recently qualified ACCA, financial services trained. Average ACCA grades (few fails), average degree before it. In short, average candidate. Left my last role to finish my exams (and as had some plans to emigrate after, cheers Corona). ACCA member since June and not a sniff of a job. Obvs the market isn't its usual self, but how few interviews I've bagged is worrying.

Naturally trying to improve myself in the downtime. Doing CFI Financial Modelling cert ; doing some data analytics certificate in local Uni. Wasn't planning on doing major further study (eg MSc) but given the market and the world hunkered down, it would be a good time to do 1. My dream would be to get into corp finance (pipe dream) and failing that FP&A/Management accounting. Should I pursue an MSc FInance? Would a top 70 worldwide programme. Or is it less important than the ACCA plus relevant experience, etc? Should I hold off for an MBA down the line instead?

Or any other guidance/suggestions? All advice welcome.

Would FDD or valuations be better for breaking into IB?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:10 PM PDT

I am wrapping up my first year in audit. I have been networking with people in transaction services and valuations groups (internally and externally), but am having a hard time figuring out which one I should really target if my goal is to leave for IB eventually.

Question about CPA fees pay back [CAN]

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:52 PM PDT

In my offer letter it states that if you leave the firm voluntary or involuntary before 2 years of completing designation you will have to reimbursment employer 100% of cpa fees.

I've seen many people leave after 1-2 years of working, does the new employer just cover the cost of the fees? Does that usually get confirmed in the interview? What's was your process for the fee?

    Work Life Balance

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:53 PM PDT

I have a serious question for you in public accounting. Do you enjoy your work-life balance? I graduated with my bachelors in 2003 and never sat for my CPA. I spent 12 years as a tax auditor for the state working no more than 40 hours per week and am now a tax manager in a dealership selling Heavy Duty trucks and still work no more than 40 hours per week. I often wonder if I messed up not getting those last 15 hours, sitting for the CPA and going into public accounting. I also am not sure if like to work 80+ in tax season and 55 the rest of the year. I finished school in the middle of the up front 120 hours to 150 hours.

    ETA: 40 hour work weeks.
