    Sad but accruate

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 08:09 PM PDT

3 months into my industry position in internal audit. And for the first time since I started, I finally feel like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Yes, I know it'll be a long road ahead, probably 2+ years until I fully understand all the work I'm doing.

But for the past 3 months, I've completed tasks that I may not have fully understood (as in the WHY I'm doing what I'm doing).

But this week, something finally clicked. I'm starting to understand what types of questions I should be asking, I'm able to look at things from a broader perspective, I'm able to better articulate what it is that I'm looking for, and it just feels great to see the things I learned in school being applied to the real world.

Just thought I would share. A lot of times the things posted on this sub come from those who are very experienced, and as a newbie, I just wanted to share my experience :)

Edit: also would appreciate tips on how to be more confident in my work. Being new in the field, I second-guess myself a lot, and I would appreciate tips from others on how you boosted your confidence and started putting yourself out there.

The bias towards big 4 is too real

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 12:43 PM PDT

Long story short, big 4 employee was selected over me for a senior accountant position at a small-mid size company (400m revenue).

My background: 2 years tax, 1 year audit at regional firm (200+ professionals), CPA, extensive experience in the exact industry as the company I'm interviewing for, got along well with all my interviewers and made it to final (3rd) round.

Other candidates backgrounds: 1) pwc 3rd year associate, no CPA, only worked on 3 public clients (no experience in the company's industry at all). 2) BDO 1st year senior, CPA, all private company experience.

All worked through the same recruiter I have good relationship with, so I was able to get this info.

They chose the guy from pwc.

Goes to show how far that little brand name on the resume can take you.

Told some non-accounting acquaintances a year ago that tax interests me because I'd like to help out with tax avoidance without realizing the connotation. Still cringe thinking about it.

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 12:39 PM PDT

I was just casually talking to a group of people who kind of knew me about career plans and I talked about public accounting and eventually talked about how I'd like to get into tax and maybe a specialty where I'd essentially be helping companies with "tax avoidance."

Everyone looks really shocked and mildly disturbed (we were all on a humanitarian volunteer trip, ironically in a country known for tax havens) and I repeatedly explain that it's a legal thing and try telling them the difference between it and tax evasion. They didn't seem to care and now I'm permanently known as that "guy who wants to help companies pay less taxes."

:( I later learned that I'm not supposed to call it that for that very reason.

    Upcoming Salary adjustments

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 03:27 PM PDT

I'm nervous for what our firms are going to tell us come year end. My company already mentioned salary adjustments (b/c of the work from home benefits) but didn't go into too much detail.

Knowing them, I have a feeling they're going to do salary cuts/adjustments because they think I'm saving money by WFH. They act like I'm saving so much money by WFH, as if my utility bills and other bills didn't go up.

Am I the only one who is nervous about this!? What do y'all think?

    Big4 vs Rotational program, Canada

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 03:51 PM PDT

Hey guys, I recently got an offer from a Big 4 in the GTA for an audit role, but I also received an offer from a CPA rotational program in industry. Everyone know's the big 4, but the industry company is a global organization mostly dealing with insurance.

The base pay is a lot better, 25% higher than the big 4 offer with a better bonus too I believe (not sure what big 4 bonuses look like, but this one is like about 7-10% of base) and the work life balance would also be much better, probably like 40-45 hours on most weeks. Its a 3 year rotational program.

I wasn't sure what would be the 100% better option, but i'm leaning towards the big 4 offer. Was hoping for any advice. I don't know if I want to work in the insurance industry all my life, so was thinking Big 4 would give me more options. Also heard big 4 exit op's are good, but wasn't sure how they compare to if I went the rotational program route.

Any advice or experience is appreciated. I gotta make the decision in 3 days.

Would sending this email to a recruiter be weird or just "too much"?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 07:44 PM PDT

Okay so I am a junior accounting major and I am applying for internships and what not. I had a campus interview with a recruiter today which will determine if I get second round interviews.

One of the main things that was giving this recruiter pause was my expected 150 credit date(they can't hire me full time until I am CPA eligible 150 credits). She was worried that if I get a winter internship, then I won't be able to take courses during it, which would push my expected 150 credit date back. I could tell this was a pretty big concern for her.

I just recently discovered what CLEP was, and the community college I went to before university accepts a bunch of CLEP credits. Also my state board accepts CLEP credits.

I was thinking of sending an email to this recruiter explaining that I definitely won't be having to push my expected credit date back because I discovered this thing called CLEP, explaining what CLEP is, providing a few links showing which clep courses my CC accepts and a link to my states nasba page that says they accept CLEP(as proof that CLEP isn't bullshit just incase she never heard of it)

Is this all too much/unnecessary or weird? Like I'm just one of many students she interviewed and who knows if this issue even is the make or break for me getting a second interview. I just don't want to miss an opportunity at an internship because they are concerned about the amount of credits I'll have.
