[US] I Failed All Four Sections of The CPA Exam

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:42 AM PDT

I failed all four sections of the CPA exam on the first try but I am now a CPA. I don't think it matters. No one has ever asked me in the 7 years since becoming a CPA, so I thought I should tell someone.

Just a reminder that good grades in college don't necessary exempt you from studying for the CPA exam.

*Reposting from my earlier post as a reminder to those feeling failure right now.

Why does the media love to shit on accounting?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:26 PM PDT

We are the butt of every office joke in Hollywood. Accounting is synonymous with boredom, receding hairline, corporate drone, crushed dreams, etc.

I was reading Phil Knight's (Founder of Nike who worked in public accounting as a CPA) autobiography and he loves to shit on his accounting career in the book. He said he was a beancounter when he worked at Pricewaterhouse. He said seeing his job title as an "accountant" on a tax return crushed his soul.

Is this career really this depressing? Are we all losers who chose to settle for the most boring job possible on earth?

I don't want to do AP for the rest of my life. Help!

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:13 PM PDT

I got my BA in Accounting back in 2013. I hated the subject, but had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, so I stuck with it, did enough to pass and didn't join any Accounting societies or do any internships. When I graduated, I started doing accounts payable and I feel like I've been stuck here ever since. My title at my current job is "Staff Accountant", however I don't feel like I do many staff accountant duties. My department is just myself and the controller. I handle all of the AP, AR, file sales taxes, bank recs, prepaid and fixed asset reconciliations, and a few other things, but it's just basic accounting and doesn't require any technical accounting. I don't want to be stuck doing these things forever and I want to learn how to do financial reporting eventually, but I don't know where to start. I've expressed interest to my controller, however she's always too busy to train. Anyone have any experience with making the leap from AP to doing actual technical accounting work? I don't want to be a CPA, controller, CFO in the future. I am fine with being a staff accountant for the rest of my life. I just want to learn how to do staff accountant duties since I feel my current title is over inflated and if something were to happen with my current job,I wouldn't be able to apply to another staff accountant job since I'm technically not qualified.

    Beating accounting puns to death

Some perspective for some of us here, in our cozy salaried office job... accounting might not be a good fit for everyone and clients might get on our nerves from time to time, but don’t act like we don’t have it good

    Recruiting

A recruiter from KPMG has contacted me about possible opportunities (I'm a senior in college and haven't had an internship). How serious is this enquiry?

Nonprofit I am interning with has neglected their books and I dont know what to do

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:03 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I hope all is well.

I am currently an intern with a small nonprofit. They have not been keeping any track of their finances for the past year. They want me to help with the financial reporting but I know it will take a lot of time because of the financial reporting requirements for expenses (function/nature). I got them a Quickbooks account and I am going to go through this year's transactions to categorize them. My question is since they are behind on their books, how can I make the most up to date financial statements without going through all of last years finances? Do I create an entry with a rough estimate of balances for last year end? I hope that makes sense.

Also is there a quicker way of "catching up"?

What to expect in a 15 min video interview?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:38 PM PDT

I have a 15 min video interview with a mid-sized tomorrow. I'm guessing this is not really a full-on interview but a screening call.

Will they ask me behavioural questions??

Stick with mid-size or switch to small firm?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:23 PM PDT

I currently work in the corporate tax group at a mid size accounting firm. I've been here for about a year and will get my CPA license in the next few months. I work reasonable hours and see a clear growth path within the firm. I enjoy the vast majority of my coworkers and our office space is super nice (if we ever return to offices).

However, a family friend who owns his own small firm (5 people FT, 14-18 during busy season) reached out to me and wants me to join his firm. I would expect to be Partner by age 30. We haven't discussed pay yet as he was mostly just floating the idea out there if I wanted to learn more.

Anyone here been in a similar circumstance? Would love to hear some tips or advice.

Accepted Full-Time Offer after completing Big4 Internship for Fall 2021 but now planning to apply/recruit at other Big4 firms. Is this a terrible idea?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:27 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm trying to decide whether it would be a good idea to apply through campus recruitment at other Big4 firms despite already accepting an offer at one after completing an internship this past fall (meaning that firm will be on my resume).

I really want to apply and look into other positions at other Big 4 / consulting firms where I believe I would have a slim chance of getting into (management consulting, etc) but would be an amazing opportunity if I somehow am able to get it.

I'm happy with my current offer, but I feel the urge to "hail mary" and see if I can get anything better. Also I want to do this as a hedge against unforeseen circumstances because of COVID.

My concern is obviously the repercussions of

    1. Potentially having to renege my offer.
    2. Recruiters becoming aware of my activity (I hear that recruiters tend to talk to eachother about applicants) -- in this case will they retract my previous acceptance offer?
    3. School disciplinary actions

My biggest concern is associated with both companies finding out about my actions. I understand I will be burning a bridge, but the Big4 is so big would they be able to keep track of this long term? Will I be left with no job offers?

Lastly, what if I applied to completely unrelated sectors/roles (ex. engineering, industry, etc).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! I'm not the only person considering doing this so feel free to share your thoughts if you're in a similar situation!

    [CAN] Deferring CFE

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 12:38 PM PDT

I will have to defer the CFE until the next offering.

This summer was the absolute worst. My grandpa got diagnosed with the most aggressive brain cancer in July and his treatment lasted until last Monday. After that, we had to take my sister to the hospital since she passed out.

Idk why but this all really got to me. Idk if I'm making excuses or being weak but it was really for me to focus during my studies.

I'm thinking of deferring the cfe as I am not feeling prepared for it at all.

I feel like a failure and a someone who gives up so easily. Why am I like this.

I'm so anxious and nervous rn and idk if I will be making the right choice.

Why did all this stuff happen during this Crucial time đŸ˜”

CAN CFE - Studying between days 1-3 - Recommended or chill?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 04:03 PM PDT

Was just wondering what the majority of people did during the CFE.

I was leaning towards chilling to recover from the mental toll Days 1 and 2 would have.

Do you recommend studying instead during each day?
