My B4 experience doesn't align with this sub

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:46 AM PDT

As I scroll through this sub and read about the post about people complaining about their B4 experience it made me realize how different my experience is. I been at a B4 in the Midwest working IT Audit/advisory/tech risk (or whatever the other firms are calling it) for a little over a year now . Below is the list of how my experience is different

    • I have never stayed on past 7 pm
    • The only times I have worked 50+ hour weeks (our team does 45 hour weeks year round, no busy season) is because of traveling or recruiting events I volunteered for (actually volunteered, not pressured or voluntold)
    • Never had a manager text me at 10pm or text me at all
    • I get mentored and have realistic project deadlines

Don't get me wrong. I still have deadlines that cause me stress, and its annoying to have to account for every hour of my day and assign those hours to budgets (heaven forbid you go over budget on something), but overall its not that terrible

I guess I just wanted to make this post for all the college students who browse this sub. Idk about these other people's experience, but not all B4 offices are a cluster of hell and doom

Offmycheat: In public accounting, it really annoys me that some Associates and Senior Associates work so hard and put themselves second after work.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:45 PM PDT

First of all, nothing against them being working hard and being ambitious in career... but few people working so hard are the ones who set a bad tone and ruin "work/life balance". I hate being on same engagement with these people even if they never mention working a lot. It's still annoying seeing their chargeable hours way up there bc they wanna work their asses off for whatever reason. Bonus point for annoying when they put personal growth behind work such as ones who complain about not having time for CPA study then working 60+ hours. It's stupid to put behind personal long-term growth for a freaking job... Unless it's an urgent thing day or two before an important deadline, I'm logging off and studying for CPA. Me first, partner's ass and his $ second. This honestly seems more prevalent among younger people who started with a decent salary in public accounting and maybe they dream of more and more... It's great that they're ambitious but really wish they'd just chill out and realize work doesn't really care about you as much as they praise your work.

Good Part Time Jobs for an Accounting Student?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 03:33 PM PDT

I'm a senior accounting student that will graduate at the end of Summer 2021. I plan on doing an internship next summer, but would like to start getting some relevant work experience. What are some good part time jobs that I can get while in school?

What skills should I start working on?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:29 PM PDT

Hi, I'm currently in a community college working on an associate in arts. After I finish this degree, I'm planning on transfering to a 4-year university to pursue a BA in Accounting.

What skills do you recommend me to start working on so that I would be good at my job when the time comes?

Accountants with Dogs, how do you take care of them during busy season?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:18 PM PDT

Now that I am working from home all the time for at least the rest of the year, I'd love to get a little friend! Just curious how other accountants properly take care of the dog during busy season being in the office all the time especially when things inevitably get back to normal.

Does it matter which firm I choose out of mid-sized?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:24 PM PDT

Is it always better to work at the biggest and better known firms?

I have an offer from BDO. I also have an offer from another mid-sized firm that's regional. It's as big as BDO in our city but it's strictly regional.

I liked the people and the vibe from the regional firm better than BDO. But should I just choose BDO because it's more well-known?

[CAN] The CFE is next week! How are we all feeling?

This past week I have done minimal studying, just been reading the Densmore flow charts and debriefing old cases. Feeling like I should be cramming at this point but I just want it over with. How is everyone else feeling?

Is it reasonably realistic for an American to get a decent accounting job overseas in China?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:13 PM PDT

Hi guys. I am a third-year Accounting student at FIU in Miami, FL. This is also my first semester in Beta Alpha Psi. As of now, I have not had any related internships. Yesterday through BAP, we had some KPMG representatives speak to us and give us some useful information. One of them mentioned that they have offices overseas and that sometimes there are opportunities for employees in American offices to be transferred to work in international offices in another country.

I am American-born, ethnically Chinese and would really be interested in working in China. My Mandarin is not great though so working with an US firm over there would be even better. Would any of you know any more information about this topic? Do the other Big 4 firms also have opportunities to work in China? Is it difficult to get one of these opportunities? What are some of the pros/cons of making a move such as this?

Need some advice on what I should do

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:42 PM PDT

So I'm planning on pursuing a career in accounting but I didn't make this choice until later on in my college career. I'm currently in my senior year about to complete a BA in Economics from Berkeley, and I'm also working on getting my AA in Accounting from a community college (I started last semester so only a few classes done).

Is it possible for me to go work in accounting after I graduate with basically ACCTG1/ACCTG2? Or should I finish getting the AA/complete more of the classes and then try to find an entry-level job? In other words, is it possible to get a job now with just those two classes or should I complete more before I begin recruiting?

Also, on a different note, is getting a certification in QuickBooks worthwhile/will it help me stand out on my resume?

    Baker Tilly Hunger Games Reward

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 04:53 AM PDT

So as a reward for making it through round two of the pandemic hunger games, BT is giving everyone a $350 Amazon gift card (nontaxable) as a "thanks for hanging in there". At least I can get a real desk now since we're working from home until probably next May.

Any other firms shelling out stuff to keep people from leaving? How are we all hanging in out there?

Career Advice for Public Accounting Long-Term: Tax, Audit, Consulting?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 08:32 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Asking for career advice about public accounting and which route to choose. I'm starting in the winter in audit at a regional firm as a recent graduate, and am looking to do stay in this career path for a while (~7-10 years). My goal is eventually work abroad, and I'm hoping I can transfer over to that location within the company. I know there are a lot of factors to my plan (like visas, and COVID-19 to name a few). However for the sake of this post I'm mainly asking which of the three job categories is best to sustain a long career in public accounting.

    Background:

    • Chose audit as I've had some internships in this field, so I went with what I knew. Also, I'm betting on the exit opportunities that should open once I leave the field.
    • Personally I like the work culture of tax since you don't have the issues of travel, and dealing with clients like with audit. However, I didn't want to get specialized too soon. Also, many people I spoke with said audit tends to have more exit opportunities (not sure if entirely true so feel free to say otherwise).

    Main questions:

    • For those of you've who've been in public accounting awhile, or know people, what is the advice you have to staying in this sector long-term?
    • For those of you who switched (e.g. audit to tax), why did you change and what would you advice be?

    Thanks for your help!
