One of the Partners came around today and handed out envelopes.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 03:40 PM PDT

At first I was worried, cause this is how people usually get fired, but then I heard him say "Hey guys, we got the money for bonuses after all! Thanks for your hard work and sacrifice, everyone!". Pretty crazy, cause we didn't think wer were getting them this year.

They were pretty hefty and thicc af. Made a satisfying slap when it it the desk. I was all exicted for a fat wad of cash, but then we opened it and it was a packet of Kool-Aid.

If that wasn't bad enough, I got fucking orange. Who the fuck likes orange? I tried complaining to my manager, but got the "be a team player" speech. And of course no one wants to trade with me because I got fucking orange. Not even that weirdo in receiving. Meanwhile, my buddy in industry has all the tropical punch he can shake a stick at.

It's bad to leave before the end of busy season, right? I can't drink this shit.

No raises but managing partner showed us pictures of her home remodel

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:40 PM PDT

I love my firm because it's full of a lot of great people with hardly any assholes, but I experienced that moment of r/accounting déjà vu when we were told there would be no raises (and no layoffs) during a zoom call, but at the end the partner showed us pictures of her remodel and the new chandelier in her bathroom. I think her bathroom is bigger than my living room. And now it has a chandelier...

    Another [EY] Rant

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 10:12 AM PDT

Reading the EY post from last night made me want to share this with you guys (on a throwaway for obvious reasons). For anyone needing a reminder that these firms don't really give a shit about you.

My office is currently conducting "comp" discussions with everyone, one on one with a service line partner. However, this wasn't really a comp discussion but felt like firm propaganda. The partner went on a 15-20 minute rant about all the "rumors" on fishbowl that EY is laying off people. Said the same things that Kelly has been spouting. Then went on to say that these are just disgruntled employees and that if I hear anything bad being said about the firm I should stand up and squash any rumors (LOL).

During the last few minutes he mentioned how my class received decent raises due to salary compression but said that we should remain humble and continue to work hard for the firm. Again LOL, I have been working 12 hours a day and weekends on a 6/30 client. This was after telling me he had to get a tutor and nanny for his kids while him and his wife work from their beach home!!!

The best part... during the entire conversation he was wayyyy to close to the camera so I could only see from his mouth down to the chest.

    PIP

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:37 PM PDT

Wow. No need for PIP for a performance based separation.

    This is very interesting. #allhands

    "Per my last email..."

I read this in an accounting context and was even more confused.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 09:16 PM PDT

    Finally did it.

I posted on here about 5 years ago asking about this profession and decided that it was going to be for me.

Went through a small private undergrad but didn't have an offer once graduation came around and didnt want to move back home into my parents basement. So I decided to go to large public school and get my MAcc. I wouldn't change a thing but the difference between the recruiting trails was crazy to me even during COVID.

I landed a job with the federal government and I start Monday! I'm so excited and thankful for all the posts and advice I've gained from this sub over the past years.

    Rant: This busy season sucks

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 01:03 PM PDT

I feel under qualified and don't know anything (assigned to trusts and state returns this week). If someone gives me one more return that has to be updated TODAY, I'm going to scream 😱

Anyone else need something off their chest?

So how did everyone find the cpa pep tax exam?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 12:56 PM PDT

Like come on. I decided to be an accounting major in my junior year, while others had theirs during sophomore year. And then Covid-19 hit. I just got rejected over others who had experience. Wow.

Has anybody heard back from Grant Thornton interviews yesterday? (Toronto)

    I’m so disappointed

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 02:14 PM PDT

Just here to vent. I am a senior in college, 3.7 GPA, somewhat involved in school, networked with all local firms, a team leader for a small construction company, also do the book work for that company. All of this does not matter to CPA firms around me. I didn't even get an interview to two of them and didn't make it to the second round of interviews at the other. I'm just at a loss and disappointed in myself for not being able to land a job. I was turned down to every accounting internship I applied to the past two years as well. I really just don't understand what's wrong with me to these firms.

    (US) PPP loans

As year end approaches, how are many of your clients looking to present PPP loans? Grant or debt and why?

    Payroll Accounting Interview

    Posted: 23 Sep 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I have an interview for a payroll accountant position coming up and it is going to be my second interview (after the initial phone screening interview with HR)

What are some practical interview questions that can be asked for this role? For example, "what journal entry should you make when paying an invoice?"
