“You being a CPA doesn’t mean that you know accounting. It just means that you’re a good student...” Posted: 08 Sep 2020 09:08 AM PDT I had my 2nd round of interview on Friday afternoon with a place for a staff position. I was interviewed by the Controller. Since I don't have an accounting degree (I was an Econ major with tons of accounting credits), I know that my background will always 1000% come up in interviews. Because this happens so often, I have a "pitch" prepared to defend myself whenever this question comes up. As expected, the Controller asked, "you know, you being an Econ major, I'm just not convinced at all how you can be a good accountant. Would you walk me through how your experience be a good fit to this position?" Me: "Yes, absolutely, I understand that my Econ background might not be the norm when you're hiring for accountants, but I have 1 year experience in a smaller public accounting firm, and 2.5 years as a staff accountant position at (my current place). Also I'm a licensed CPA and..." Then he cut me off. "Yea, having a CPA doesn't mean you know accounting, it only means that you're a good student, that's it, but anyways..." On one hand, I was offended. Even though this might be true, was there a way he could phrase it nicely? On the other hand, I was thinking to myself, how many things do I need to do more to prove myself? Is having a CPA and almost 3 years of experience still not enough nullify my Econ degree? I'm not looking for a controller position, just staff at this point. Why is having an Econ degree such a sin?? Obviously my mind was completely shut down and I didn't even ask any questions after the interview. I knew that I didn't want to work there right there and then. Sorry, just to rant. Am I overreacting? Any thoughts would be appreciated. [link] [comments]

What are the options for someone leaving public accounting? Posted: 08 Sep 2020 08:58 PM PDT I am currently going into my second year at a mid sized public accounting firm and I'm not sure it is for me. I'm good at the job, but I just don't know that I have the motivation to commit the hours required to continuously move up the ladder. What other options are there for someone considering leaving public accounting? I know that there are staff accounting jobs and what not but I'm not sure that I want to do that type of work (it feels a little mindless to me). I'm no where near the point where I could get a officer type job which is likely my end goal so I'm not sure where to start. Sorry for the rambling but any advice would be appreciated. [CAN] BDO Canada - Retained By RBC - Company Indebtedness Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:24 PM PDT Covid killed our store, our landlord locked us out, our debt deferal period is about to end, just got word we were assigned to BDO for RBC to recover debt owed to them. How does the process work? We have a personal guarantee for the debt but don't have any assets. What will happen? Any tips/pointers on how to navigate this process? I heard from a friend BDO charges enormous fees (which to my understanding is now my responsibility), how do we keep this to a minimum? How do we facilitate a settlement that BDO/RBC would agree upon? We may be able to borrow some money from relatives but likely won't be able to pay off entire debt owed. We poured our heart, our soul and all our money into this store...it seems the nightmare is just beginning... [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:09 PM PDT Hey everyone, I'm working at a regional firm in audit and it seems like there's been a ton of turnover in our department. I've heard seniors and managers saying that this Is by far their most stressful years and that their backlog is ridiculous. I think it's hilarious to watch the firm get gutted. I actually might take a new position in the next few days as well. Are any of you seeing similar things? Would love to hear stories about this year. [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:50 PM PDT Looking to leave PwC Canada before obtaining my CPA. I've earned about 24 months of professional experience at PwC and am worried about the 10K clawback. Does anyone else have experience with leaving PwC before getting their CPA and were you required to pay back the entire amount? [link] [comments]
Im graduating with 150 credits in my bachelors. How do I best prepare for the CPA? Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:25 PM PDT I'm kind of happy bc I am debt free in doing so. I changed majors and had to take a language in college, and transferred from Cc to a Uni where I had mandatory electives, which resulted in me having 150... People around me are making it out like I will flunk the cpa for not having taken masters related courses. If I grind hard af at Becker everything should be fine right? [link] [comments]

I have 3.0 GPA IN ACCOUNTING and I want to work for the government Posted: 08 Sep 2020 11:45 AM PDT I will be graduating with 3.0 and I wish to work at IRS or any government accounting job. I want to stay away from both industry and public since I have to admit that I am not really fluent in english as I have spent almost more than half of my life speaking korean. Just for a fun fact, I had to take a physical examination for some school application when I first stepped my foot in USA and the examination was consisted of an eye exam as well, without knowing the alphabets, not even ABC, I had to make the letters with my hands to my doctor because I simply just couldn't read. Every alphabets on the chart looked like small and big worms if you can relate. Anyways, my goal is to get a job that requires MINIMUM social interaction. I heard from some dude in government accounting that he had only had 2 interactions with his co-workers and few phone calls during the first 3 months of his job and this gave me a light of hope. How hard is it to get a government accounting job? Do I have to compete with 100 people with masters and CPA for one seat? What are the GPA requirements for undergrads? Are the requirements flexible for some jobs? Is 3.0 enough? Would my fluency in Korean give me some any kind of advantage or boost my competency? I would be happy to work for IRS as a gs5 but I heard the only requirement for GS5 is a high-school degree. Am I aiming too low? or am I greedy for aiming for gs5 without even any work experience in the field? I like to spend time with my lizards and cats, and play PC games at home. I don't really plan to have babies yet or getting married so the low salary and never seeing promotion really aren't problems for me. I'm currently living my second life after suffering from a year long depression and multiple suicide attempts. I want to do something with my life now. I really appreciate any insight of advice in advance. Give me some fuel! [link] [comments]

For virtual Meet the Firms, should I still wear a suit? Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:20 PM PDT I was thinking of just wearing a dress shirt. I reside in California, and currently there is a heat wave. I think some of the forest fires are also contributing to the hotter climate over here in the state. Would it be unacceptable to not wear a full suit, or do you think recruiters and other associates would understand that with the current heat wave, a suit is not needed to make a good first impression? How bad is $45,000 in student loans for an Accounting degree? Posted: 08 Sep 2020 09:19 AM PDT I plan on going straight to industry, so I don't expect to make big 4 salary. How bad is $45,000 for a degree in Accounting? I plan on living in Michigan. [link] [comments] |
