Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:47 PM PDT Hi guys. So for background I live in Houston AKA the epicenter of the COVID pandemic. Because it's so enormously widespread, you can do everything right and still catch it just because of the sheer number of people who have it. About two months ago I realized that my sense of taste and smell had completely disappeared. My girlfriend and I quarantined immediately and got tested on a Friday which was the earliest we could get a test. Results were expected within 3-5 days. As the weekend progressed, my symptoms worsened. I started coughing all night and couldn't sleep. It got so bad that I could feel my lungs flaming up and filling with fluid. I called Teledoc for some advice on cough medicine and they said if I had trouble breathing then I needed to go to the hospital. At this point I still hadn't received my results but it was pretty fairly obvious I had COVID. So after two full nights of coughing, trouble breathing, and no sleep I went to the ER. At this point I was mostly just exhausted. The coughing fits were on/off. I knew other people had it WAY worse than me, but teledoc wouldn't prescribe me any strong cough medicine and the stuff they did prescribe was doing absolutely nothing so I didn't feel like I had a choice. I go to the ER which AFAIK should be covered as long as it's COVID related. That's what I was informed of when this thing started. I go to the ER and tell them my symptoms and they immediately send me to the COVID wing. There's like people dying in there. I wasn't expecting to get admitted, I just needed some cough medicine. So they did a chest x ray for pneumonia which came up negative. The doctor came in and said I was presumed positive but that the hospital only tests people who are being admitted and I didn't need to be admitted. That's fine, I've been tested already and I'm just waiting for results. I mean I obviously have it, and everyone here seems to agree. They wouldn't prescribe me stronger medicine because a lot of it might put me to sleep which could be dangerous if my lungs fill with fluid. Okay, I say that makes sense. I go home and eventually recover from symptoms. I get my positive test the next day which I expected completely. Two weeks later, I get hit with an $1,100 ER fee. My insurance should cover it because it's COVID related right? Wrong. The ER didn't classify me as a COVID patient, just an ER patient. I call and try to get it corrected. I mean, I was in the COVID wing with obvious COVID symptoms and received a positive result the next day. Because they did not personally test me, they are refusing to classify me as a COVID patient therefore my insurance will not cover the full amount. This of course was not communicated to me when I got to the ER, when I was assigned a room at the ER, OR when I agreed to a chest x-ray. There's absolutely no way I can afford to pay for this right now. My girlfriend was laid off so I'm the only person working and paying rent. Unemployment benefits have now ceased to exist. This is an absolute nightmare. Is there anything I can do about this? I'm really frustrated because I followed all of the experts advice from day one and am still absolutely screwed. Had I known it would threaten my financial well-being I would have taken my chances at home. [link] [comments] |
Akko Property Insurance - 15$ per month covers all gadgets - too good to be true or legit? Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:17 AM PDT So I was looking for some insurance for my expensive gadgets and came across these guys: https://getakko.com. The company is based out of San Diego and they offer insurance for 15$ per month and it covers literally any item you want to insure from laptops to phones to expensive leather jackets. You can add unto 21 items. It almost seems too good to be true. At first, I thought it must be a fraud company but I spoke to the founder and it seems to be legit. Its just that I can't find much about them online so I wanted to know if anyone has used them and has first-hand experience? [link] [comments] |
Got Rear-Ended, At-fault wants to settle out-of-pocket Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:56 PM PDT Pretty self-explanatory. Was sitting stopped at a red light and was rear ended. At fault suggested we try to settle out-of-pocket. I said we'll see. Went to get an estimate on repair and was about $3,000. He said he'd cover that plus the rental. I said my agent suggested insurance handle since it's not insignificant damage. He comes back with he'd like to settle and have the repair shop send him the invoice. Something isn't jiving here, so I'm just going to file it with his insurance and tell him to call my agent if he has any questions. I told him twice today that my agent suggested we do insurance and I'm cutting communication with him. Right move? TIA [link] [comments] |
General liability insurance for an off grid mountian cabin. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:44 AM PDT We recently purchased a small off grid cabin in the sourthern Sierra mountians. We are in central eastern California, a high risk fire area, and we heat with wood so we cant get a straight up homeowners policy and truthfuly dont want one. Uninsured motorist settlement. Medical insurance is trying to get reimbursed. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 02:54 PM PDT I was in an accident that was with an uninsured motorist. My auto insurance company paid me out. However, my medical insurance is now seeking reimbursement for the payments to the hospital that they made. Can someone explain to me what is going on? I thought this is why I have medical insurance. I have more doctor appointments to go. My medical insurance didn't cover everything, and now my medical insurance wants reimbursement. The bills are stacking up quickly. I am in California if that matters. I was a victim of being rear ended. Now I am paying out more than what I expected. I feel like I am being taken advantage of when I was the victim. Thanks for any help/advise [link] [comments] |
Auto insurance for non driver. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:39 PM PDT Not sure If this is the right place for this but I'll try! I'm 28, never got my driver's license and never have driven a car. I am currently trying to finance a vehicle, however, I need car insurance to do so. Is this possible? If so, how would I go about this? The primary driver is my boyfriend, lives with me and has insurance already, but the dealership needs the insurance in my name. He can co-sign but he has bad credit, so I don't know if that's a great idea. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:47 PM PDT Who else has taken the Kaplan p&c study guide? I come from no insurance background at all. So this is all very new to me. I'm scheduled to take the p&c exam on Monday in Nebraska. Do you find the Kaplan guide to be more difficult than the actual test? I've spent 3 weeks studying and completing the material and I still can't seem to pass the final exams. [link] [comments] |
Flood Insurance in coastal area Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:42 PM PDT I'm in the process of buying a home (new construction) and would like to buy flood insurance since I live in a coastal area. The house is Zone X, according to FEMA website, which I believe is low risk. I will be closing on a house hopefully in 1 week and today we discussed insurance. I've chosen the HOI, and I asked my lender about flood insurance and he said to get one after closing. Today, I was watching the news and it mentioned that flood insurance takes 30 days to kick in. So that means I wont be protected those first 30 days? Was I supposed to get flood insurance when i put in an offer? The house wasnt mine and loan wasn't approved at that point either so I didnt even think that was an option. Thanks! Location: TX, US [link] [comments] |
Need advice or car insurance situation from selling a car Posted: 21 Aug 2020 08:19 PM PDT Long story short, I moved to Michigan for a contract position and bought a car. Then pandemic happened and I moved back home in Canada. My landlord's close friend ended up buying my car at a very low price - I didn't really care as the car was pretty old and it would cost me more to move back there and try to sell it. Anyways, I've created a docusign indicating the amount, VIN, color, make, model, year etc as well as indication that I've released all liability to him dated July 4th. He's signed it and has said he's going to book an appointment at the DMV (21 days later) to officially transfer the title (in my absence). He's also provided a Progressive insurance card dated from June 17th to Dec 17th 2020. Unfortunately I haven't heard back from him much. But good news is All being said, should I be worried about any liability/fines?

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 07:30 PM PDT We're buying a house in south dakota and it's an upgrade for us. Will cost close to $400,000. The quotes we're getting on homeowner's insurance are suggesting umbrella insurance. Some will give us a cheaper homeowner's policy if we get the umbrella insurance as well. I'm skeptical. We've never been offered this before. How important is it? Is there a homeowner's insurance company you'd recommend over others? Thanks for your time [link] [comments] |
Insurance company says wife doesn't have Individual OOP Max, just family OOP Max despite card/plan. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 02:56 PM PDT My wife has a HSDP plan for her and our son. We live in Wisconsin and her employer is in Illinois. On her companies benfit website, and on her insurance card itself it states there is a $2000 Individual deductible, $4000 family deductible, $3000 Individual Out of Pocket Max, and $6000 Family OOP Max. All are for in network (which she has done). My wife is pregnant, and I noticed that we were getting more bills than I would expect this late in the year. We got into the website for the insurance company, and on their site everything is just family. It says she hit the $4000 family deductible, and have around $1800ish let of family out of pocket max. There is zero mention anywhere of individual deductibles or OOP. They even looked up her card and claim it they don't see anything that says individual. Her claims themselves are $3800ish. The company says she hit deductible, so all coverage is now 80% coverage by the plan until we hit that extra $1800ish. The agent we were speaking with said "oh, they just print that on all the cards" even though the card has individually printed name and ID. If her printed insurance card says $3000 Ind. OOP Max and the plan summary page says the $3000 Ind OOP Max is the most she can pay for "her share of the coverage", shouldn't she be at her limit? Does this sound right and do we have any legal recourse, as we know we're going to have to pay the other $1800ish with all of her appointments coming up? [link] [comments] |

I tried to get these braces when I was 19 but my health provider refused me but since then my jaw pains have gotten worse. I know medicaid doesn't cover ortho past 21 but I'm wondering can I please my case about this and hopefully get them to pay? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:08 PM PDT Should I try to amend a police report with several factual errors(including my name) that claims "fault could not be determined" or just start an insurance claim with the other driver's employer's insurance and contest the police report to them on the phone / at trial? I have photo evidence and witness testimony. This is in texas [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:38 PM PDT I bought a car in Chicago, IL abruptly after my car died at the beginning of January. The dealership gave me full bumper to bumper coverage, and I immediately signed up for a nationwide car insurance plan. While I was caught between the confusion and what I needed, I also signed up for Spartan Auto insurance. Am I paying for insurance that I don't need? How do I go about cancelling through Sparta Auto if so? I called them because I received a really intimidating letter saying I didn't have some type of insurance. Now I'm tight on money and realizing that I probably am over paying but at no certainty. Thank you in advance!! I'm absolutely clueless about car insurance. [link] [comments] |

Not at fault. Should i let them pay out of pocket or go through their insurance? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:36 PM PDT In Georgia, United States So basically, this women hit my bumper. I was stopped, red light other cars stopped in front of me. I assume she wasnt paying attention and hit me. She gave me her phone number. I called police. They did a report. Police told me that she told them she hit my car. She took fault. I was kinda stressed out by the hit. Thought the damage was really bad. But it wasnt. My bumber should be replaced. It has dents and scratches. Thats what it shows on quick inspection Her father is the one who owns the car. Not sure if she is covered. They seem to want to pay out of pocket instead of having to pay a deductible. Should i go ahead with that? Im not at all evil and i know some insurance rates will go up. Should I contact my insurances and let them handle it? Or should I just call theirs up and start a claim with their insurance company? I heard that when insurance finds that I had a not-at-fault accident they might raise mine up too. This is like my first accident ever and I am definitely not at fault. And unsure who I should call up first or whether I should wait for their insurance to call me. [link] [comments] |
How to handle insurance company issues. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:47 PM PDT I'm starting to get annoyed by one insurance company I deal with for my business. Its been problem after problem. My next issue that I'm dealing with is that I asked for a quote for a vehicle, we didn't have auto insurance with them. I never got a reply (typical with them), and I needed insurance so I went with a different company (who turned out to be cheaper anyway). To be clear, they answered my initial questions quickly, but when it came time to actual get an amount, they never replied. I never signed anything, never got told anything about the policy, saw insurance cards. I only found out about this policy when I received a bill in the mail over a month later. I contacted the insurance representative, and they agreed to cancel the policy, if I provided proof that I had other insurance. I can tell they were already annoyed also. Now they have sent me a final bill, for less than their original amount, but I can't agree to pay that. Honestly, at this point, this is a long drawn out issue, that they haven't handled correctly from the start, and I do not want to contact them again because I am starting to lose my patients, and I know I will get annoyed. I also get the feeling that they won't remove the charges, so there is almost no point. The last time I had an issue, I had to show up at their office, and talk directly to them, which was an honest waste of time because I stood around for almost 15 minutes while they were figuring out what was going on. With everything going on, I would prefer not to go to their office, I am trying to avoid going out as much as possible. What is everyone's opinion here? Anyone have any suggestions going forward? I already know when my current policy expires, I am getting a different company. [link] [comments] |

Consumer exploitation during pandemic - what recourse is there? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:08 PM PDT I have finally been able to lift my head far enough above the abyss of my pandemic life to have discovered that my car insurance company- Liberty Mutual - added a complete stranger to my policy and has been charging me about $80/mo for this unknown added driver since November of 2019. When I called to report what I believed to be a mistake or perhaps fraudulent activity, they basically defended their position that this random person "was associated with my address" and that I needed to notify them by X date if I didn't want this person added to my policy. The person is probably whomever moved into the house I was renting at the time. I never received the letters they apparently sent me about this issue because they were mailed to my old address. Furthermore, they claim that because I didn't update my address until recently, they're basically entitled to the money they have been charging me for the past 10 months for this complete stranger that was added to my policy. When I asked how to go about rectifying the problem so as to receive reimbursement for the charges, they just passed me along their chain of "customer service" reps who are trained to give the same canned responses. I find it hard to accept that this kind of exploitation is just par for the course, especially during a pandemic. I have been completely under water trying to hold two low-paying jobs while also parenting a child at home so some things have been overlooked— monitoring my car insurance policy is one of them. Is there any kind of recourse against this nefariousness? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Aug 2020 02:14 PM PDT Hey guys, So I'm buying a house ($186,000) and I was given some quotes. I'm struggling a bit to understand some of the stuff on the quote and I'm needing some help. Total premium is $760.00 On the second page, theres a discount/surcharge that has info on wind/hail for $180.15 and it says its included in the total premium. Windstorm or Hail Percentage deductible (first page) is a negative amount. Im confused on how these items add up and why the windstorm of hail percentage deductible is negative. The other quote I received is for $855.00 and the differences are its 1% deductible for windstorm/hail (instead of 2%), personal property coverage is 100,500 (instead of 90,400) and the loss of use is 40,000 (instead of 20,000). Thank you! Location: TX, US. [link] [comments] |
What are the max amount of cars you can have on auto insurance policy? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:17 PM PDT I've heard 4, but do different insurance companies have a different max number? I have a couple cars already that are fun to drive and I would like to get another one. I have a car that I inherited from my dad when he passed and I don't want to sell it, but I didn't know if having it would put me over the max allowed on a policy. If different companies allow a different number, I might have to change companies to accommodate? [link] [comments] |
Travelers New Car Replacement Package Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:59 PM PDT I'm looking to switch to Travelers. They offer me a good quote and new car replacement seems nice. Has anyone used Travelers new car replacement? Or, any feedback on Travelers in general? I'm in CA. [link] [comments] |
Dual insured- ending coordination of benefits Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:31 PM PDT I'm leaving my current job to attend school full time and my current plan will end at the end of this month. My employer's insurance has been primary and my husband's secondary. M husband's insurance will need to become primary. Any advice to make this a smooth transition? I understand I need to notify any health care providers of the change and my pharmacy. But how do I make this simpler? I don't want my husband's insurance to deny claims because they are used to being secondary. Location: Indiana [link] [comments] |
PA P&C test-- which book is "the book"! Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:44 AM PDT Hello again! I decided to start the Pennsylvania P&C certification process. I have all the info regarding the 24hr pre-exam courses and how to sign up for the exam. But what is this elusive "book" that I'm told all new Insurance folks have and follow? Are they referring to an exam prep book? Another specific book? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Acquired flood insurance policy, need tips on how to best be prepared in case I need to use it Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:40 AM PDT Happy Friday redditors. I live on the Gulf Coast in an area that was virtually demolished by Hurricane Katrina. As you may know, we've got some storms headed to the Gulf, so I've decided pretty late in the game here to get a flood policy on my rented home. It won't take effect for 30 days unfortunately, but I plan to renew it as long as we are in this house. Our home is 1000 sq ft to give an idea of how much furniture, etc. is in the house. My policy is for $12k. (I made a list of every valuable item I could think of and put a dollar amount to it and came up with about $8k and that's how I concluded $12k would be enough). I plan to go through the house and take pictures of serial numbers on electronics, pictures of the furniture, etc. Most of our furniture was inherited from a previous landlord, so I have no information on the purchase price or anything like that, but it is nice furniture and I would like to be able to replace it with something comparable if it were ruined. My fiance built his computer, so it will be complicated to inventory all of those items but I will leave that to him. But if anyone has tips on that lmk. My biggest concern is really the little things that add up, and how I would recoup on those. Things like clothes, shoes, jewelry & knickknacks, pots and pans, kitchen items. Just all the basic things that would need to be replaced if I were to have everything in my house ruined from the storm surge. I cannot and will not take a picture of every item of clothing I own, nor every pot and pan by itself. Is there a reasonable way to ensure that I can recover on those items? If I show a closet full of clothes, will an insurance company not conclude that a full closet is worth at least a few hundred bucks? Should I just take pics of the few nicer/more expensive clothing items? So basically, I'm looking for advice on how I can be prepared now in case I need to use my policy later. Thank you in advance. Edit: I am in Mississippi [link] [comments] |
