Was in a car accident today and had some questions, please help!

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:09 PM PDT

What happened: I was driving my girlfriend's car and someone merged into our lane, sideswiping us and taking the front bumper off. We pulled off the road and I took pictures of their license and registration along with the damages to both cars and the license plate numbers. The police showed up and wrote a report. The car is still good to drive.

Questions: I am not sure how to go about this whole thing? My girlfriend doesn't want to file a claim through her insurance because she doesn't want to pay a deductible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I can add more details if needed.

Edit: I am in Wilmington, North Carolina

Advice on Stolen Moped Found by Police

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 04:51 PM PDT

    Hi there —

My moped was stolen from my property four months ago. Allstate paid for the replacement value of the moped, approx. $1,200 & I signed the title over to them in exchange.

The moped was recovered after someone tried registering the vehicle with the DMV.

I'm looking to take possession of the moped once again and repay insurance for what they previously paid out on the claim but I can't get in contact with anyone other than my local agent or my claims agent who have said that the only option would be to bid on it when it gets sent to auction hours and hours away from me. Do you all know of any alternatives or have any suggestions here?

I really want the moped back without jumping through these loopholes.

    Esurance reviews

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I recently moved to Michigan and blown away by the over doubling of my car insurance premium since moving with Liberty Mutual. I've been shopping around and found Esurance to be offering a rate of about HALF of what I am paying now. I am interested in feedback, either positive or negative, from anyone with a policy there before making the switch. TIA!

Advice on getting into underwriting with no experience in finance?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 10:44 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So for a long time I planned on going to law school but I don't know if that's right for me anymore. I currently work at a law firm for an insurance group of attorneys, often working with LLoyd's of London, and so that's how I came to learn about the position of underwriting. I'm looking for information about pros/cons of the job, work life balance, salary, job prospects, chances of eventually getting a remote work from home position, etc., whatever you have to offer, as well as advice on how to get into underwriting with no background in finance and I really mean zero. My bachelor's degree was in a certain field of political science because again I planned on going to law school and all my internships and jobs have been related to politics, government, and law. I talked to someone I know who works in finance and is transitioning to underwriting and he recommended I get certified online. What do you guys think?

Car insurance using scare tactic, need advice

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Does anyone know if it is possible to have a vehicle insured under a policy in a province where the vehicle has never been registered or owned? Can a policy be changed from one address (ex. Northwest Territories) to an different address in another province (ex. Ontario) without the vehicle ever having being registered in Ontario? My insurance company (TD meloche monnex) is claiming that I have an Ontario auto insurance policy when my vehicle has never been registered or owned or even entered the province of Ontario, and that my claim could be denied in entirety. I did tell the insurance company that my reliable MAILING address was Ontario. Thanks in advance for your help/advice!

    Help with Valuable Annuity

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 08:41 PM PDT

[CA-USA] Uninsured guy's car parked next to me caught fire, and damaged my car. My insurance is writing off the car as a total loss, but the claim payout is less than what a similar car (same make model, mileage, trim) goes for. What do?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:45 PM PDT

Guy parked his car next to mine, and his car went up in flames (due to negligence). He was uninsured. But he apologized and offered to pay for any and all repairs to make it up.

My car's fire damage repair costs exceed the value of the car. So my insurance wrote off my car as a total loss.

But my insurance company's valuation is less than what it would cost me to buy a replacement vehicle of comparable make, model, trim, year & mileage, and doesn't include any rentals or money for rentals.

In California, is the insurance only supposed to pay out what the car is "worth", not what it would cost to buy a replacement car of the same make, model, trim, and comparable mileage/conditions? This difference is almost $2k.

I was under impression that the "worth" or value of my car is the same as what the going rate for the same car is on the market. In California, what is the definition of this worth/value in the event of a total loss? Is there a strict way to determine the value of a car in CA for auto insurance purposes?

And do you have advice on how to get my claims adjuster to close that gap?

Or can I ask the uninsured guy to pay me the difference between what insurance is gonna pay me and the price of a like vehicle? Both fire dept & police showed up to take reports if that matters. And the police gave me specific personal info on the other guy should I go to a civil court.

I understand my insurance company won't be going after the uninsured guy (even though he is a AAA member, he didn't have any policy on that specific car). I also understand there may be difficulties from getting paid from the uninsured guy, even if I were to go to civil court, and that it probably won't be worth the legal costs to go that route.

But the other guy seemed like a good dude & offered to pay for everything to make it right.

You’d be my hero if you could lend any helpful advice/tips to taking Heath/Life Insurance Exam in state of Wisconsin

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Hello wonderful agents in the world of insurance I soon strive to be!

I apologize as this is the first time I joined the sub and posted (even posted to the insurance agents sub alone to be safe Incase this wasn't the right sub - if so please direct me where to voice my post) but I am looking for anyone who would be so kind in sharing advice/tips or a better understanding of taking the exam itself in Wisconsin (bonus points) and what the requirements are... I coming with a background of ZERO insurance and am taking my pre licensing courses on ExamFX AND WOW it's overwhelming. I'm done with the life portion chapter quizzes and am half way through the health. It has embarrassingly enough taken me almost two months to study for this turd of an exam. I completely 100 percent underestimated how long it would take for me to absorb everything the best that I can. I still truthfully get to points in the chapters where I'm just looking at words and I hit a wall. All I'm doing is memoriZing memorizing memorizing and my brain gets to its limit a lot. I'm not saying I don't understand a thing it's just taking me forever because let's be real here insurance is NOT a sexy subject to study. At all.

I don't even fully understand if the Health and Life portions are bagged into ONE exam or if I have to take two separate exams. I of course have been avoiding calling customer care for the examfx because I'm sure they might think I'm a big idiot for asking in the first place.

    Please help me!:) thanks!!

Catalytic converter anti-theft device vs. insurance coverage

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:23 PM PDT

I was about to pay $400 to get a metal shield protector installed over my car's catalytic converter because theft is insane in my area (California) and replacement is wildly expensive due to legal parameters.

I checked with insurance re: coverage if stolen - I would pay a $500 deductible and they'd cover the rest (can cost $1000+ to replace). Same if it happens again (not impossible). There is no insurance incentive to add anti-theft devices, like how airbags/alarms can get you a discount.

Anti-theft devices are deterrents but not 100% protection. So if I pay $400 for a protector device, and the thing still gets stolen, now I've paid $400 + $500 deductible. Am I missing something here or does it actually make more sense to just not get the anti-theft device? Are there any other questions I should be asking my insurance? Thank you!

    Anesthesiologist out of network

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:56 PM PDT

I got a procedure done at an in-network hospital by an in-network doctor. But, apparently the anesthesiologist was out-of-network and the hospital has sent me a bill for the anesthesiologist. I had already paid all the deductible for the year and this procedure was supposed to be completely covered by the insurance, apart from the copay.

I had also filed an appeal with the insurance explaining everything and talked about the RAP clause but they say RAP Clause just requires them to pay the minimum medicaid amount ($100). Should I fight with the insurance or negotiate with the hospital and pay it off?

The anesthesiologist's hospital sends me a bill every month, they have talked to the company and have patiently waited to resolve this issue. They have threatened to send me to collections once, but I managed to convince them to talk to the insurance and get the collections part on hold. Don't want this to hurt my credit. Would appreciate any help.

    Some specifics:

    • Insurance: Aetna
    • State: Indiana
    • Procedure: April 2018
    • Latest appeal date: July 2020
    • Bill Amount: $700

Car totaled. Insurance company comp cars have more miles but they are valuing my car at less money. What is the best way to negotiate?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:50 PM PDT

I had a 2019 Nissan Leaf that got totaled. It was a Leaf SL with the tech package. It had 8,000 miles. Leafs aren't that popular so there aren't a lot of used 2019 Leaf sales nearby. Both comp cars were a Leaf SL. One comp they showed me had 25,000 miles and sold for $20,999. The other had 16,000 miles and sold for $24,500. So they offered me the mean price of those 2. I tried arguing that it should be worth at least as much as the car with more miles and they said no. They also said other cars are actually cheaper but didn't have any to show me.

They also suggested I look for cars that aren't local since I can probably find a cheaper one that way.

Anyone have any tips on other ways I can argue that I should be getting more money?

    I am in Orlando Florida.

My mom backed into my car

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:36 PM PDT

So in 2016, two months after I purchased my car, my mother backed into it and created a rather large dent on the front fender. I did not get insurance involved or make her pay to fix it because at the time she did not have very much money. However now she is making close to 10 grand a month and I asked her if she was finally fix my car. To wish she said fixing that will not make my car look better because I have one small dent on my trunk. And she refuses to fix it. Is there a way I can still file an insurance claim on her, the only issue I may see other than how long ago it has been is that she does not drive the car that she used to back into my car anymore so I cannot show both dents from the accident

    Edit. This is in Louisiana

Multiple people driving one car, one person is insured

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:32 PM PDT

Hi! Question, I am moving in with two of my friends to a new state for 4 months bc COVID. I am shipping my car from Colorado to NC, I am insured on my car but my friends are not, but they would like to drive the car when we are in NC. Should they be added to the insurance to drive the car? What would happen if they were not and got pulled over? What is the occasional driver thing?

Wasn't aware phone call visits weren't covered by my insurance...

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 04:28 PM PDT

So I had an appointment back in April with my psychiatrist and was charged incorrectly for it so I had to contact my insurance to get that sorted out. They fixed that, but then she asked me about my appointment saying it was put down as a telehealth call and I told her it was actually a phone call. She then proceeds to tell me that phone calls are not covered and she has to change it to say 'phone call' now and that she will submit with and that we may have to pay out of pocket now. I wasn't aware phone calls weren't covered and was not told so by my doctor or his office.

I am wondering if this is something we can get sorted out? My family just doesn't have the means to pay full price for my appointment and I feel sick that I messed this all up by not knowing the correct thing.

    Thank you!

Insuring a Geodesic Dome in Florida (do I eat the shit sandwich?)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 03:49 PM PDT

1982 built 2400 sqft geodesic dome with shingle roof last done in 2003. Not in a flood zone. Two hour drive to the beach.

Purchased this property in 2016 and have up to now been paying about $2100 a year in property insurance. Well now they've dropped me due to the age of the roof.

I've had two roofers come out to look and both recommended some simple repairs but neither guy recommended a whole new roof; it's just not time yet. The first guy said it'd be $25-30,000 to reroof it because it's so steep. I've talked to other dome owners who've said similar. Obviously I'm not in a position to spend that on a roof right now!

So I try to price new home owner's insurance and I can't seem to find anything under $3-4,000. I feel that would add too much to our monthly escrow payments. I haven't tried Citizen's yet. Wondering if lender-forced insurance might be cheaper?

If anyone has advice about insuring a "unique structure" I'm all ears.

What Are a Manufacturer's Options if a Single Reseller Requires a Higher Aggregate Coverage Limit?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 03:26 PM PDT

Is there a way to purchase additional coverage for the benefit of that individual vendor? Some other way to supplement the overall policy without increasing coverage and costs across the board?

Basically, the situation is that we might have the opportunity to sell our product through the website of a major big box retailer. However, they may require that we have coverage that's several multiples of what we need anywhere else. If anyone has run into a situation like this before I'd be interested to hear ideas.

Auto insurance for a very-low mileage driver? (OH)

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 11:39 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm a 22 year old male in Ohio who both lives and works downtown. I tend to get around mostly by walking, including for my commute (although I'm still WFH due to COVID). I don't know exactly how many miles I drive in a week, but it's under 40 for sure, probably under 20 many weeks.

What insurance carriers tend to give the biggest discounts for this kind of mileage? I'm doing the test drive for Root Insurance right now, as they supposedly factor mileage pretty heavily, but I see a lot of stories about them hiking rates up so I'm a little concerned. Who else should I be looking into?

[CA] Accident involving rented e-scooter, car insurance heavily pursuing payment. Any advice?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 03:01 PM PDT

I was recently involved in an incident using a Lime scooter (the scooters you rent with an app on your phone). A friend and I were traveling down the sidewalk of a one-way downtown street in a major CA city that had an alleyway splitting the block in half. As we approached the alleyway from the sidewalk perpendicularly, a driver pulled out of the alleyway about 5-10 feet before we crossed the sidewalk in front of the alleyway (a building blocked our site of cars in pulling out of the alleyway), and I unfortunately hit the driver's car as there was no way I was going to stop in time. I hit the front fender of the car, banged my knee up a bit, but was overall okay and stopped to exchange driver's license information with the driver. I didn't give them my car insurance as I was riding a rental scooter, and I also don't travel with my insurance in my back pocket.

Long story short, Lime denied my claim, and the driver's insurance is not claiming liability as it is apparently illegal to ride the e-scooters on the sidewalk (even though pretty much everyone does). The driver's insurance company (coincidentally, the same as mine) has an agent pressuring me to file an auto claim, even though I've called three separate agents explaining the situation and each agent has advised me to not file an auto claim, essentially telling me a claim filed on my behalf would not benefit me in any way as my car was not involved in the incident and that I shouldn't do it.

One of the agents advised me to file a renters insurance claim, and when I asked the pursuing agent if that would suffice, she told me she does not believe a renters claim would be viable in this case. In short, I have no idea what to do in this case with the pursuing agent telling me to file a claim, while my insurance is telling me not to file a claim. The pursuing agent said she needs payment soon from me, and if there's anything I can do to not have to pay, or reduce the payments that I would owe, I'd would greatly appreciate the advice.

TL;DR - Hit a driver's car on a rental e-scooter, their insurance agent keeps pressuring me to file an auto claim and requesting payment, my insurance says they won't do anything if I file one and it would be pointless. Is there anything I can do?

Totaled car - Geico insurance question / URGENT please !

So my moms car got totaled last night . We were in standstill traffic & someone rear ended us in full speed . We're in NYC . My brother was driving & my moms out of state, the insurance is in her name . She has Geico , can she deal with insurance over the phone or will she have to come back ? I don't want them returning the car just because she couldn't get to them in time . Insurance is also supposed to give her a rental car temporarily. We still haven't told my mom that her car was in an accident ......

    Do I have a case?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:37 PM PDT

I was involved in an accident at a T-intersection where I was driving on the cross street (the one that form the top of the T). The other person was driving on the street that is perpendicular to the cross street. When that person made a right turn onto the cross street, they hit my car at the back right side door. Their insurance company, NatGen, asked me when I saw the other car, to which I said about 2 meters before reaching the t-intersection. Using that, they assigned me 10% of the fault because they said I should have stopped when I saw the other car. However there was no way I could have anticipated that the other car would not yield. I had the right of way and no where in the rule books do I see anything expecting me to make a sudden stop in such a scenario.

The adjuster also have been ignoring my calls and gave me the runaround whenever she responds in emails. She also have the wrong location and wrong time of the accident on file. I filed a complaint with the Department of Insurance but they will get involved. Do I have a chance in court?

If you were driving straight and there are multiple smaller streets feeding into your street along the way. Do you stop at each of those t-intersection whenever you see a car coming from the perpendicular street? Is this the expected rules of the road?
