Today I had my first customer

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:57 AM PDT

Hopefully these types of posts are allowed here.. I didnt know who else to tell

About a month ago I decided I was tired of sitting on my ass during this covid crisis after losing my job. I started my own computer / tech repair business and have been hard at work getting everything together for the last 4 weeks. Yesterday I was feeling pretty burnt out and wondering if it was even worth going ahead with as I wasn't getting any customers book in.

Well this morning I had a client contact me via Facebook to service his machine, I picked up his machine performed all the work and returned it to him that afternoon. He was so happy with my work he recommended me to 3 of his friends and they have ALL booked in for the same service next week.

    Over. The. Fucking. Moon.

The sleepless nights trying to organise things, sort out my social media page, getting everything sorted with the government etc and making sure I'm doing everything correctly is paying off. I understand that this is just the beginning and things will begin to get much more difficult but as it stands my hard work made me $400 and I couldn't be more proud of myself.

Edit: thank you ALL for the overwhelming support, I feel so motivated right now to charge through this and make this happen. It's been a dream for as long as I can remember to have my own repair business and I think if I stick to it I can really make it happen. I had worked under others for 5+ years and damn it feels good to be doing it myself, I've taken everything I've learned and applying it here and it seems to be working. Thanks again everyone!!

Also: that customer just gave me a 5 star review and its made me just that little bit more happier than I was before

Edit 2: WTF MY FIRST REDDIT AWARD!! THANK YOU!!

Is it possible or true that you could sell any item and be successful in Ecommerce?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:15 AM PDT

So to give some context, this question comes from all the youtube videos and news I see. I see self made ecommerce people talk about their success stories of selling simple chinese alibaba/aliexpress/etc watches or jewelry. They say that they made hundreds of dollars a day and they were successful. The problem is most people in e-commerce fail and there must be so many competitors selling cheap items so shouldn't it be hard to sell. Or could I possibly be successful selling any item as long as I execute the marketing/strategies/website/etc correctly.

Looking for something like Slack but with strict permissions.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 03:36 AM PDT

I run a small pre-school in the uk. Management and each age group have tablets to use the online learning app. The software is a custom apk so there is no access to the play store, email, or any other apps, just to make sure the kids are safe. One limitation of this is that communicating with each other is just verbal (often forgotten) or post it notes (messy and get lost). I'm looking for a solution like slack, but no way in sending photos/videos/docs, and limiting communication between the 3/4 tablets.

Is there anything like that available?

Setting up a business, while working for somebody who would be a customer. Any issues?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 03:11 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So as above I currently work in manufacturing and in the business they use many disposable items, cloths, gloves etc. I would buy products online and sell to the company to make some profit while saving them some money.

Due to my job I can speak to the managers and put the cost saving to them and get products trialled and if they like it should get the custom.

I dont see an issue as I am still saving the company money. None of the managers are the owner ( big worldwide business)

Can this cause issues in the forseeable?

EDIT: I am UK based if that changes anything.

How do I know when it makes sense for me to rent an office space?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:24 PM PDT

I have been doing wedding planning/florals for a little over a year now. I am lucky enough to be in a business where I don't have many costs, and I was able to quit my full-time job after only a few months and do weddings full time.

I have gotten to a point where I feel like renting an office space makes sense for me for a few reasons. 1) I feel like I would just be more productive in a separate workspace and I feel like I would have more of a work/home separation which is hard for me right now. 2) it would be nice to have a space to meet clients in. 3) my house is tiny (600 sq. Ft.) and I am running out of room to store wedding decor, etc. that I have accumulated. 4) I don't have much space to do florals at home and whenever I have a floral order my house is pretty much filled with flowers for a few days which gets annoying.

I have made enough profit over the last few months to be able to afford to rent a space, I just don't know if I can trust that that will continue. I also have a shed in my backyard that I can potentially covert to an office, but it is pretty small and it will be costly and a lot of work to convert it.

I don't know if anyone can really answer this question for me! Just looking for wisdom I guess!

Take home pay for non-technical SaaS founders

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 09:44 PM PDT

I recently tweeted about something I don't see most folks talking about:

    Take home pay.

Everything is roses and sunshine when folks know you make $20k MRR or $60k MRR. And if you're a developer you're probably holding onto a lot of that.

But as a non-technical founder? One who has to pay for most things to be done?

    Nope.

    https://twitter.com/itsjustamar/status/1297059639125635073

TLDR - I, at least, was shockingly underpaid (perception vs reality) for years and only just 'made it'

    Any experience with "Wishpond"

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 09:09 PM PDT

I'm not sure if "Wishpond" is just a Canadian company but wondering if anyone has heard of it, or had experience.

They've reached out to me and I'm very hesitant when I get emails like this out of the blue. Of course any googling of them is just testimonials posted from their website so I can't find an unbiased review

If you haven't heard of Wishpond, they're a marketing platform to help small businesses expand

Seriously considering incorporating a C-Corp in the US as a foreigner (Professional Services: Software)

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:49 PM PDT

In my country, I am one of the directors at two separate companies. We hired a consultation firm who were taking care of all the legal work to keep the company in good standing. I am already used to doing a lot of paperwork and I create some of the company's internal processes which are then run by with the consultant firm to make sure it's all being done correctly.

Now I'm interested in incorporating in the US. I already have clients there so it makes sense to me. I'm aware of the risks of double taxation and this is fine by me. There are so many choices for the state of incorporation but I was thinking California since that's where we'll be operating from.

How do services like LegalZoom or BizFilings compare to say hiring a consultation firm for incorporation and other compliances?

    SBA Disaster Loan

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:00 PM PDT

Can someone please tell me the terms of SBA disaster loan. I tried looking around their site, but couldnt find the details (and i havent received the loan paperwork yet). My loan will be < 200K, and so will not include personal guarantee. The summary of T&C says that the loan is backed by business assets. Keeping covid in mind, what if i dont have any business assets left? If my LLC was to go bankrupt, and i have to sell the assets to recover my initial investment, i wont have any money left to re-pay the loan. Any idea how would this play out?

Any recommended Credit Card or ACH Services to implement for your clients?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:23 PM PDT

I am starting a bookkeeping service and would like to give my clients the options to pay via credit card and ACH.

I am getting quoted the following for these services: - Credit Card: 3% and $0.15/transaction. Monthly fee of $18.50. - ACH: $65 initial setup fee and $0.22/transaction.

There is also a payment card industry compliance fee that is $119/year.

    Are these quotes fair?

For others who offer similar payment methods, any suggestions or companies to avoid?

I am just starting off so would like something cost-effective.

As a small business owner, what benefits and compensation do you allow yourself?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:21 AM PDT

I'm a new small business owner and I service other small businesses. I'm taking a vacation in September and because of the nature of my business where emergency services could be required, I have made arrangements to see that they are taken care of in that event and have informed my customers of this and the reasons why. I feel like I'm getting some resentment from these other business owners because I allow myself a vacation. I'm going to continue to take a vacation around this time every year. I'm just curious if there are other small business owners out there that also allow themselves to have a life outside of work.

Edit: I should note their resentment, if any, really isn't my concern nor the purpose of this post. Just curious if I am truly that different in that I own and operate a one person business and still allow myself time off. Thanks for any and all advice but I promise you I'm doing fine.

Payment processing question about a subscription service.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:54 PM PDT

I run a physical store that has a monthly membership feature and I am looking for a payment processing system that will allow me to charge the customer's card/account on the day they signed up. The bank I work with said this helps with showing a constant flow of revenue throughout the month instead of just one lump sum every month and just a few sales the rest of the month.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

We own a Flea Market. In this Flea Market all sales are handled at front registers. We currently are having trouble keeping track of our inventory. We have over 100 vendors that have a lot of things in each booth. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a solution. Does anybody have any ideas that could help out?

    Starting An RV Park

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:28 PM PDT

My dad recently came into some land and 2 RVs near the lake he lives at and is in the process of turning it into an RV park.

Does anyone have any experience in this field and any advice on running a successful one? I've read it can have a good return rate once it gets going, but not sure how long that'll be.

If you have experience in it, any do's, Dont's, pros & cons? How did you set your pricing and did you offer any other amenities there? He also came into a boat that he's restoring the interior on.

This is out of my area of expertise so any help is appreciated. I own my own design business so I'm sure that will come in handy somehow.

is there a way to set up send only email for employees?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:53 PM PDT

I have a lead generation employee who does great and generates about 5 leads a day for. A good lead is when they get email address from business owner to send information about our offerings.

I want to set up an account where my lead generator can send an email on my behalf but don't get any replies or incoming emails of that account. Is this possible? What tools do i use? We use godaddy for our emails.

Employer Match from Two Member LLC?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:33 PM PDT

Is it possible for a two member LLC to "company match" a retirement plan like a solo 401k or some kind of IRA? Right now my LLC partner and I only use traditional IRA's to lower our taxable income but I was wondering if we are missing out on something larger?

2020 and 2021 will be some high earning years for us where we only need to member-draw about 60% of what the LLC made and would love to sock away the rest without paying taxes on it. The following years will be more like owner-drawing 95% of the profit as we will be slowing way down on jobs we take, so I don't want to convert to a S Corp for two good years, but would be interested in learning if the LLC can write off some earnings towards retirement accounts for one or both of us or if we can contribute more that the Traditional IRA limit in something else that could lower our income tax and/or grow tax free.
