Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

    Local vs Global SaaS discussion

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Hi All! I'm curious to see what your opinion is with regards to the market that a SaaS business is built for. As far as I see it, in the developing world, really the way to go is with hyperlocal transactional apps. Very few small companies are going to compete with the likes of google, atlassian, salesforce etc, because they dont really have these geopolitical boundaries. Email is email anywhere in the world. So rather than trying to go global, I feel as if there is a lot of push for very localized apps that adapt to specific regulations, taxation, payment providers, and even geography (quick example being motorcycle based delivery apps that are more common in Latam than in the US).

Very curious the see what you think of the concept of either going global or local. If there are any good reads about this, please share, i'd appreciate it a lot.

My side project is gaining some traction. Am I onto something.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:54 PM PDT

I got laid off due to covid and haven't been able to find a dev job since. To stay sharp on my dev skills I made a political compass website 2 weeks ago and it seems to be gaining some traction. It's gotten 20k views in the past 2 weeks. Where do I go from here. should I monetize with ads or should I sell.should I monitize at all right now? Is it too early and would I risk loosing the community surrounding it.,,

Launch quickly and have demand that outweighs resources or launch slower whilst ramping up resources?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:18 PM PDT

The startup mantra is to launch quickly, break things and get feedback asap. We're about to launch a niche delivery service and already have a number of clients. A single client with many orders almost outweighs our current delivery capabilities.

Obviously I feel like the smart thing to do is activate each client slowly as we can accommodate them to stay on the safeside but I'm also feeling like we should just go balls to the wall to keep the whole thing moving forward quickly. I equally don't want to disappoint our clients too.

Would appreciate other opinions even though it feels like it's quite obvious what we should do. Thanks

Am I entitled to reports/updates of a startup I own stock in?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:04 AM PDT

I left a startup where I was employee #1 and have significant stock. The company is still operating. While the end of my time with the company was bitter, and I have not spoken with any of the team members for over a year, am I entitled to any formal company updates?

Need advice if I should scale and invest in this project.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:47 PM PDT

Hey folks, first post here and I need some advice. 3 months ago a couple of friends and I set up a small mvp for a hailing service in specific routes in my country (not US) and it's been growing somewhat faster than we thought it would, requiring some more time and investment.

The problem is 90% of our drivers operate without proper licensing. We are worried if we scale and become visible, we may face some legal issues about our drivers not having licenses.

We let drivers set their own prices for the trips and we only charge platform fees for per trip proposal to avoid some the known issues in this industry. The routes are mostly longer than 10km, inter-city and are not properly covered by public transportation.

Can you please give some advice/tell your opinion if we should invest and provide licenses to the drivers which will significantly decrease the profit margin or leave it to drivers, claim to be just a marketplace platform ( which we are ) when called out and see what happens? Thanks for advice and this awesome community!

    LLC Question For Startup

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 08:48 AM PDT

Hi All - My partner and I have started a business and found an investor for a $2m investment. He has very little involvement and is more a silent investor. His attorneys drafted up an LLC and I'm reading the agreement and I noticed the following :

    Distributions of Available Assets:

First, to the Members in proportion to their respective unreturned Capital Contributions until each Member has received distributions under this Section 4.2(a)(i) in an amount equal to such Member's Capital Contributions; and

Does that mean that he will get all distributions until his investment is paid back ? I would not want that since we are all contributing something and would hate go not get paid myself until the full $2m is paid back. Thanks so much for ant guidance or advice !

    Social Networks in 2020+

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:18 PM PDT

I have always wanted to build a social network, but I feel like the whole market is very saturated and everything has more or less been done by all the big companies like Facebook.

My question is what are the thoughts on how realistic is it to pursue building out a social networking application in the coming years

    Early Startup Marketing Firms

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:07 PM PDT

I'm an early startup founder, doing everything bootstrap at the moment. I'm looking for resources to help for marketing the company. I'm currently in Beta so I'm trying to get additional users for full testing and I believe a marketing firm can help.

Does anyone have a marketing resource that works well with early startups?

Looking to start a new project in hardware. Any industrial design fundamental courses that you can recommend?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:30 PM PDT

So my previous venture was software based. I didn't know anything about coding when starring, but I self taught myself the basics. Of course I didn't carry out create the whole project on my own, I hired a developer to do most of the work, but I was able to understand the developer and comunícate very effectively with him, suggest ideas and solutions and by the end contribute to the codebase itself. I would say this knowledge was key in the success we had.

Now, I have a hardware idea I would like to implement but I am in a similar position. I know nothing about hardware engineering or industrial design. Can anyone recommend some free courses/resources where I can build up a some solid fundamental understanding of hardware building.

    Thanks in advance!

Create startup or join another one?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:51 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a junior dev. I'm unemployed and living with my parents for the last 5 months, in a small town. I've been looking for a job for the past 3. In the last month me and my friend created a SaaS that we think has a lot of potential and we want to release it in ~ a month.

Meanwhile I got a good job offer recently in a large city. Money is good job is good. However the company's product is in a similar space with ours (not directly competing though). They don't allow any side job and they sounded pretty strict about it. They also claim all IP made on and off work-time related to their company. So I can't do both.

Now I'm in a position I'll have to either accept the job or decline and try to start my own thing. If I don't accept the offer the downsides are many:

    1) Parents will have to keep supporting me (they are ok with it but still it doesn't feel that right)

    2) Zero social life. No friends. No dating potential. Only me and my cofounder who will be in another city. This has been already the case for the past 5 months..

    3) Money could take a while to come (we have verified the need but still it takes time to build it to a solid income)

    4) More pressure to succeed. If I don't in a few months I guess I can start looking for another job, but it could take a while again..

The only pro is that I really believe in the idea and I like working on it with my friend.

On the other hand if I accept the job:

    1) I'll be living on my own in a big city.

    2) Good social life, meet new people and get more dates (I know the pandemic is here but still, better than here)

    3) Stable income, good money, will get more experience. I can start a think 1-2 years down the line but the current opportunity will be gone then most likely.

The main con would be that I won't be able to work on my idea, or get any shares. We will also probably have to cancel the launch. I will always have that "What if" inside me itching.

Experienced devs and startupers, please help me make a decision! Thanks!

What web hosting to use whilst validating MVP?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:28 PM PDT

My partner has made a website for our online business using HTML, Javascript and CSS skills he taught himself a week ago and we want to host it, but we don't know how or where. I'm pretty sure it's a static website since there's no server side functionality yet, but it has some advanced features like a HTML look up table. From what I've read, hosting on AWS seems like a good idea since we can scale it easily and it's free for a year whilst we test the concept, but is it easy to do? Even AWS has options like EC2, S3 and elastic Beanstalk so it all feels a bit confusing. What would you recommend for free/cheap hosting and if AWS is the way to go what route would you recommend? Thanks in advance

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 06:06 AM PDT

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

What is the best criteria to give away stock options in pre registration of a startup?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:27 AM PDT

I am launching a tech startup and to motivate our early supporters who are advising and contributing some hours, I am promising them that we will give them stock options once we register. I have no idea on what basis and how to give stock options. How many options we should plan to give away and on what basis?

I’ve been asking for days now and I haven’t gotten a response

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 06:40 AM PDT

I need to do some sales, email, and customer onboarding automation. So basically I want to trigger emails based on actions that happen inside my web app. Which tools are good for this, and like how do they exactly work? Like I want one email when a user signs up, it'll be like a welcome email. How will the app that i've setup know that the user has signed up. Is there some type of code that goes into the sign up process? Where can I keep track of the data I collect when a user signs up (name, email, company, role) etc. Does this data go automatically to the app im using for this automation? I'm so confuseddd, can I have a conversation about this with someone? or feel free to drop a comment.

How do I go about signups for a third party service app?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:51 AM PDT

Our startup connects people with businesses and allows customers to make purchases from said businesses through our app. It may sound cliche but it is basically like an Uber/Lyft or a Doordash for this specific niche (with our own unique twist on things). Anyways the issue our startup is facing is getting signups from businesses in a timely manner. We are thinking of potentially hiring salesperson to go out and sell this platform to businesses in targeted cities while we also target businesses using the internet. We are hoping someone has experience and would be able to provide us with some insight on how they have managed to successfully accomplish this sort of thing.

Any recommended systems for someone just starting up?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:21 AM PDT

I have been searching for a while for great systems to be much more productive and accountable than I am right now.

I have tried Pomodoro for a while and would like to try different things.

I'm asking for suggestions of systems that you have used during your startup phase that has made a significant change in the day to day and the long term life.

    something like GTD or something.

    Thanks for any help.
