Posted: 20 Aug 2020 04:32 PM PDT So back in april I hired a freelance dev to help me with a SaaS product (I'm an indie dev myself but was busy with a different project). Starts off great, but by june progress slows until I get a minor update once every two weeks. He says he's busy so in July we part ways on good terms and I complete the work myself. Today I found out what he was busy with - a feature for feature direct competitor to my product, which he started in June while working on my stuff. He's not using my code I think, and based on what I've seen it's different visually, but same problem/solution/product features. I know the mantra is "ideas don't matter", but this kind of leaves me with a bad taste.. Is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future? I'm pretty sure non-competes aren't even enforceable, nevermind the fact that I don't have the resources to sue anyone anyways. [link] [comments] |

I know basic coding and can build pretty good websites and apps with no-code builders. I play sports and am great at problem solving and thinking outside the box. I want to start some small businesses such as online stores and Micro SaaS projects but I need a consistent source of income to fund these projects and the tools and learning necessary. I am already promoting my pet care services within my neighborhood and am offering lawn care as well. My previous work experience includes working for my dad at his 7-11 and umpiring Little League games. I'm not looking for long-term work nor a crazy salary but I want a basic income and a job that I don't hate(such as working at some fast food chain). The reason for starting a podcast is to develop personal branding. Its been only 3 episodes and my boss liked my idea of a podcast, and he has offered me a better outreach if I do it as a PR for the job I do. The only condition he has put forward is that it should have an element of climate in every episode. I have the freedom to choose, how I can bring that in. But I'm not really sure how to calculate how much I would spend on things like servers, data storage, etc. to serve X customers on a given month so I can't really picture the amount of money I should ask for. Solo founder for hardware/software startup? Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:00 PM PDT I am in the early stages of developing my startup that would be a hardware product that interfaces with software in the gaming industry, i.e. VR/AR, and I have been working on the hardware side of things for awhile. I am concerned when going to pitch to an angel that I don't have the Team they want to see, generally at least 2 cofounders. I am pretty proficient at hardware design but I have no real experience to speak for other than my day job (different industry), and I'm quite weak on the software side. I am planning user discovery/validation at the moment and I think my point here is that I could use some pointers on where I could find everyday people to pitch to, who use VR/AR products to see if this would be something that they would pay for. As for the programming side of things i am still refining how i want my prototype to be "glued" to games or the software side. Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:50 PM PDT I'm a sophomore in college and have built an MVP for a financial software. The market interest is there, but I haven't incorporated yet. Conversations with smarter people than me (but non-lawyers) have helped me realize that launching without talking to a lawyer specializing in stuff like financial regulation (SEC, Commodities law) might open me up to legal issues. There's plenty of resources on incorporating, but the stuff I've found online about finding lawyers in the aforementioned categories has been a little esoteric for me - any advice on where to start? It's about to be published, and we're responsible for handling all marketing. My first idea to promote it was to start a podcast where we invite contestants and make a gameshow out of solving the riddles; obviously using it to plug the book. Great, but now we also have to promote that too. At this point, I'm treating it more like a startup/brand. Does anyone have specific tips for success promoting their book? Is Silicon Valley / SF still number one? NYC seemed to be catching up, but with COVID, it's unclear if that will continue. Does my pricing model suck and if so should I change it? Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:55 PM PDT My business is a website monitoring and alerting solution, the service provides basic HTTP/HTTPS monitoring with SSL certificate expiration monitoring - since I've seen too many sites with expired ones when there is no need - with plans to add some extra things like response time monitoring before a relaunch. That is the monitoring part, the alerting portion of the service is where when the monitoring detects an outage that it will then go into what we call an 'alerting flow' which is system that will pull notification settings and send out alerts based on them, this combined with our policies allow customers to manage on call lists. With the relaunch planned for later this year I am looking at both increasing the feature set - currently underway - and also looking to make sure the business model works well. That brings me to the question at hand, changing my pricing model. Currently my pricing model is 3 tiers, starter, growth and business. Starter is a basic tier with a limited number of monitors and users as well as support, logs ect. Then growth and business build on that each increasing the limits and other features offered. Currently starter is a flat price and then the growth and business are seat/user count based. The idea behind using users as a pricing factor was that it was a main cost center - monitoring is cheap its the alerting that costs a lot comparatively - as well as some of the other services that offer alerting are priced using users. This pricing model has come with a good bit of criticism over the past 3-4 months as I've been talking to more and more people about the service. I've had many people suggest I go to a monitor/usage based model where I would charge 3 different prices based on the feature set wanted then have a monthly usage where they get so many SMS/call minutes included and then do packs on top of that for fillup incase of many outages. Idea of the new pricing model would be they pay say $1 for 10 monitors at the starter feature set and say $5 at the business feature set but SMS/call packs would be a constant price - I think I might make this more like AWS where the more you use the cheaper it is; though I don't think that will come soon should I take this approch. Another equity question - Engineer with an opportunity to work for a startup Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:32 PM PDT I'm an engineer with the opportunity to work for a startup. We are beginning negotiations on compensation. The startup (of which I will not be a founder) got their first and only round of seed funding a year ago. They've gotten themselves to the point where they need some additional technical expertise, and that's where I come in. The position is paid, something approaching my normal base salary, but without the benefits of a larger company like 401k, healthcare, etc. so it is a small pay cut. I have however never negotiated equity. I've read through some of the posts here, and frankly they are a bit over my head, because I think I don't understand the basics. If I'm offered a 1% 'equity' share, what does that really mean? It seems like that's worthless, unless the company is eventually bought. What other options are available to me at the negotiating table to make sure I get a stake in the proceeds should things become successful after MVP? I'm happy for someone to tell me to go RTFM, if you could point me to where it is. [link] [comments] |

I have a stack of receipts going back months but do not plan on actually registering the business until next month.
