Should I pay of all my student loans at once? Student Loans

Should I pay of all my student loans at once?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:36 PM PDT

    Hello,

I currently have ~18k left in my student loans and have ~35k in my bank. I have been seriously considering paying off all my student loans all at once just to be done with them and move on with my life. However, it is currently under a freeze due to COVID. Should I pay them now or wait until things get better after COVID? Anyone else in a similar situation as me?

I am living w/ my parents now, so I am lucky to be saving money. I pay ~400/month for car insurance, internet, etc and 400/month for my car. I make 85k for my job currently as well.

    Thanks for your help.

May have hit the federal loan limit. Mostly a rant.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:37 AM PDT

I'm a graduate student (PhD) getting a doctorate in Education. I've "paid" for every single degree I've gotten (BA, MEd, and PhD) by myself with loans. I knew I was going to hit the limit this year and was bracing for it, but I assumed (LOL) that my school would reach out prior to the semester beginning and walk me through the process of getting a GRAD Direct Loan. School begins Wednesday. I currently have holds for non-payment.

I'm angry because my school still shows pending student loans and doesn't have an option to speak to a human, you have to key in your ID and phone number and wait for a call back. None of my cohort members use financial aid, as all are married and/or more financially stable than I am. None of my friends are currently pursuing higher ed. My family is not supportive. I know what to do- if I have hit the limit, I apply for a GRAD direct loan. If I don't get approved, I complete a payment plan. I'll be fine, and I'll get through this. But I'm still scared and feel very alone.

    Just Finished Sallie Mae

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:50 PM PDT

It's such a GREAT and liberating feeling to know that I am DONE with my Sallie Mae loan. Shoutout to this subreddit for keeping me encouraged, disciplined and determined to get my loans finished.

Also, I've yet to finish paying off my subsidized loan but that can wait since the 0% interest rate just got extended till EOY. Best of luck to everyone that's pushing through!!

Dumb question but where do I even start getting a student loan?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:12 PM PDT

Hopefully a 1st generation college student here. Nobody in my family even knows how to get a student loan and I'm running outta time to get one. I was told Studentaid.gov is only for small grants.

    I seriously need help.

Using student loans to move out?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:23 PM PDT

So to summarize I'm freshly 18 preparing to start my first year of university this fall. I live in an extremely toxic and hostile household with several types of abuse which severely affects my mental health and therefore hinders my academic ability as well. I would like to move out ASAP. I am unemployed and have never really had a real job. Due to this and lack of experience I haven't been able to land any of the jobs I've applied for. I don't drive either so I'm dependant on public transit to get around. And just to be clear I have about $12000 put away in RESPS for my schooling so I'm not sure how that would impact my eligibility for applying for loans but I know I won't need to use a loan to pay for my actual schooling for a little while at least. The thing is I'm getting really desperate as the environment at home is really impacting me negatively and I know I won't be able to succeed in my studies. I live in Alberta Canada and I want to know peoples opinions on taking out loans to be able to move out on my own. Once I was settled I would like to look for a job and hopefully begin saving to pay it off as well as going to school as a full time student. To be clear there is no physical abuse at home and I'm not in any immediate danger from my family except maybe myself if this keeps up lol. I just need to get out and the longer I stay the longer it kills me inside. All of the friends I've spoken to about this are against the idea because I will have a debt to pay and are worried about me financially but honestly I'm at the point where no amount of debt is worth more to me then saving myself mentally.

If you have any tips or advice I'd love to hear it thanks.

$11,000+ in loans too much for undergrad as a cc transfer?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:09 PM PDT

I am a first-generation college student, so I apologize if this is a stupid question. But is $11,000+ too much in loans much for undergrad as a cc transfer? I currently have $5,600+ in loans right now and might need to take out another $5,500 loan (subsidized) this school year (this is my last year in undergrad :) ).

I was in community college before I transferred to my university. There were no loans taken out during cc, all this was from my university. I get a lot of anxiety with loans and I am trying my best to take out as little as possible and pay what I can out of pocket or through awarded scholarships I've applied for. I planned to apply to medical school after taking a few gap years. (I'll continue working as well during these gap years.)

    Thank you!

    References on MPN

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 11:59 PM PDT

Will the references that I put on my MPN be contacted at all for any type of verification? I'm just putting the references down because I have to. I have no intention of missing any type of communication with my loan providers and I have no intention of defaulting or running away from my loans.

So they should NOT be contacted, correct?

FedLoan account showing future payment due date of 2/2021 instead of 1/2021

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:23 PM PDT

MyFedLoan acknowledged the executive order extending student loan flexibilities through 12/31/2020. Can we assume that any payment not made in 1/2021 counts toward PSLF?

My parent consolidate student and PLUS loans, how do I unconsolidate them?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 04:19 PM PDT

My parent consolidated all of my student loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) with their PLUS loan for their own personal reasonings/gains without informing me (and still hasn't, I only learned by eavesdropping on a phone call). My major concern here is when I begin paying back my loans, I don't want it to be a group effort. Without getting into too much detail this, this is a way of them staying in control of and micro-managing my life, and I am distancing myself.

How do I unconsolidated them? If I tell my provider that I had no knowledge and gave no permission for them to do this would they be understanding of my situation?

Loan options: 2nd bachelors or masters after capping

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I am about to graduate with a bachelors in the next couple months. Probably by June next year at the latest. I've been paying out of pocket for the last few years due to having capped my student loans (thanks Westwood). I also can not get any private student loans, as for some reason despite my credit being good, they won't give me one. I have no idea why.

I have decided to either go back for a Masters in Information Technology, which I know I can get funding for, or another bachelors. Problem is I don't know if I am able to get federal student loans for a 2nd bachelors. Whenever I do research, I am not finding any resources on getting a 2nd bachelors so I'm wondering if any of you have any information in that area.

    Recent graduate: Avoiding interest capitalization

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:37 AM PDT

Hi everyone, so I graduated this year and my federal loan interest is currently not accumulating like many other people. I saw that might be extended until December. However, I was reading about interest capitalization, where any unpaid interest will immediately be applied to the principal....

From the My Great Lakes Site:
"Capitalization is when unpaid interest is added to your loan principal. This can happen at specific times during the life of your loan, such as when your loan enters repayment for the first time, or after a deferment or forbearance period ends. When you're in school at least half-time or you're in your grace period (the six months after you leave school full time) you usually don't have to make payments on your loan. Before your first payment is due, any unpaid interest that has built up is added to the amount you borrowed (capitalized). From that point on, interest accrues on the higher balance so you end up paying interest on interest. On federal student loans, capitalization occurs only when it's required by Department of Education regulations."

They also said the way to avoid this is to make payments in school or during the grace period...I haven't been paying anything yet. My question is, should I be taking advantage of this time to pay everything I can on these loans? With MGL I don't think you can apply payments directly to interest?

do i have to claim money from parents?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 02:48 PM PDT

i'm filling out my application for September now. my parents gave me 3000 dollars towards school. my living expenses and my tuition are significantly higher, and for the previous semester (where i did not receive funding from my parents) i was only eligible for aprox 5440. my question is do i "have" to claim the 3000 dollars on the application form when applying? i'm worried this will significantly lower the amount i receive and wish to receive the same amount as last semester as i am barely surviving :( i obviously don't want to get in trouble however, does anyone have any advice?

I hit my Undergraduate loan limit and need help with private loans.

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 11:48 AM PDT

I've never had to use private loans before and it's very confusing. I tried to get a loan through a private loan company without a co signer but it was basically impossible. Are there any company's you guys recommend or that I should stay away from? Also, do they just mail me a check? Deposit it in my account? I need the money to pay for school ASAP. Any advice?

    Refinancing Perkins Loan through ESCI?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 04:18 AM PDT

Looked into my local credit union for options on refinancing a $6200 loan from Heartland ESCI (Perkins Loan - 120 months 5%).

They offered 3.79% at 5 years. I've been lucky enough to have gotten a job during the middle of the pandemic that pays 40k/yr pre-tax. Would it not be in my best interest to refinance that loan? I have student loan debt through Navient (about $50k) in Perkins Loans etc that is setup for IBR right now.

    Student Loan Refund?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 06:51 AM PDT

I am taking out about 10k in loans for grad school. About 6k of this went towards my tuition and I was notified by FAFSA that 10k was indeed taken out. Will I get this money back as a refund in a paper check, refund to my bank account, or something similar to that?

Withdraw this semester to take classes in Spring, will all my loans defer?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 04:10 AM PDT

With the student loan waiver extension, I'm considering dropping my 2 classes this fall so that I can extend my deferment date for repayment in the Spring, when I could graduate. Right now I'll graduate in Dec.

I'm paying a ton of money off on my loans with the current waiver, and I want to keep that going before I'm forced into paying all my loans evenly (I'm not sure I want to consolidate yet as I have 7% loans and 3% loans).

I just paid off my last private loan, so all I have are federal loans right now. My loans are from a previous degree.
