Please save the USPS for the sake of the American small business. Posted: 19 Aug 2020 08:52 PM PDT We can't afford to ship with FedEx or UPS. Our shipping costs will more than double, even triple and we will be forced to bleed profits or put the charge on the customer which many of them can not afford or won't pay because the pricing is absurd. It's insane how expensive private carriers are in comparison to our public mail carrier. If we abolish the USPS, the backbone of the American small business and the connection between millions of Americans will be in the hands of capitalists. This is WAY bigger than people think it is. Selling Businesses / Business Valuation Hell. Any help please? Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:27 AM PDT I have had a recurring issue on selling businesses and business valuations. Every broker I talk to essentially says "what do you want to sell the business for". I say, "Whatever the business is worth". Then the drama starts with every one of them- they say they do real valuations, but they seem to either say "I'll sell it for the amount you want to sell it for" or "I don't want to sell it for the amount you sell it for" (reject the listing). The logical answer is then to get an appraisal, so I paid for appraisals. For one company, I hired an appraiser who came back at 417,500 appraisal, so we listed at 420. Its now been on the market 2 years and asking price is 320. I asked my broker if I can lower the price, but he says its already so far below appraisal we can't drop it anymore. I'm on my second broker. I have another business that I have to sell, and again the responses I get from brokers are obnoxious. "How much do you want to get out of the business" is the question they all ask. "Whatever its worth" is my response. Again some brokers are giving me the run around- others tell me to go buy an appraisal. (I've lost faith in appraisals). I talked to an RE agent, and he said "You can sell the properties for about $950k", but then the broker says "you won't be able to get a loan on 950k". I ask "what should we sell it for then?" his response was "Would you take 500k for it?". Logically I think, "If thats what it is worth sure- but thats over a 30% cap rate on the property alone, I've never heard of people selling properties in great shape fully rented for that high of a cap rate... around here its normally 8-12% which is more like 1.2 million. I do recognize that the business is a self-rental, and that makes it a little more challenging... but I feel like brokers should be guiding you through this process and none that I've met do. The only one who I felt like did guide me through it just priced it at the appraisal and now I cant move it! I've spoken to 8 brokers and have not been able to figure out how much to sell a business for, and its driving me nuts. Do I just GUESS at what I think is right and pay them to sell it? or is there a better way to evaluate the value of a business? (Not appraisal or tax value, but actual sale price) [link] [comments] |
How do you review your contracts/agreements? Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:26 AM PDT Hey all, I'm at a point in my business where sometimes I can snag a big client and those typically come with nice thick agreements/contracts designed by their teams of lawyers. For the smaller contracts, I've been going over them myself but for the bigger stuff I'm getting a bit lost. What are my options for getting some help with legal document reviews? Straight up hiring a lawyer? Is LegalZoom an option? Are there any other online services that can help with contractual review? Any other suggestions? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Lawn mowing in Australia - insurance without a abn? Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:03 AM PDT Hi, I currently work part time in a normal job and have a hobby of lawn mowing. I have had people ask me to mow their lawns for a bit of cash and I enjoy doing it and don't mind the extra money. I decided I'd post a few ads online and start doing it every now and then just for fun and for a bit of cash. I do not plan to do it as a full on business and as far as I read up on, I believe you do NOT need a ABN if it is a hobby - is this correct? I would barely even earn $7k in a year. One thing however (hence this question) is I want to have public liability insurance which is $33 a month. I do not want to mess around with that and damage any thing and be screwed. Is it possible to get public liability insurance for lawn mowing without a ABN, does anyone know for a fact? Thanks for anyone who can answer me with a factual answer. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2020 07:56 PM PDT I recently started a small pool service company and to grow it at a decent rate, it's going to require personal funding. It's set as a sole proprietorship currently. Basically, I can purchase accounts(non tangible item) from other companies which over time will help me gain a better yearly income after recovering the costs of the initial purchase. On those accounts it will take around a year to break even, but long term it makes sense. Is this investment able to reduce my yearly taxable income since its an investment towards the business at all? Would this have to be an LLC for it to work or is it doable with a sole proprietorship as well? Let's say I'm on track to gross: 50,000 this year. Would investing $20,000 bring my total taxable income at the end of the year to $23,000? Hope that makes sense. I tried explaining the best that I could to my knowledge. Thank you guys! Seeking advice on a business deal - buying a daycare Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:55 PM PDT My wife works at 1 location of a 2-branch daycare center. The owner of the facility wants to retire and sell us 1 of the branches. Both branches share the same name and are within 3 miles of each other. Average tuition across both branches is ~$9000/child. Branch A (the location where my wife works) has a capacity of ~100 kids. Branch B has a capacity of ~50 kids. The owner wants to sell us Branch B. It seems that the owner wants to split up the 2 branches and sell Branch A to someone else, but hasn't yet decided who she wants to sell Branch A to. The daycare as a whole is well-established, and has a great name in the community across both branches. Both locations are always filled to max capacity from year to year. It sounds like a great opportunity, but to me, the glaring issue with all of this is the fact that the owner wants to split up the branches and not sell both together. By splitting them up and selling someone else Branch A, it will create a new, direct competitor for us, who is using the same name as us and will create confusion in the marketplace. Not sure what her motivation is to split up the 2 branches, but will need to have a conversation with her about it. But I'm lookIng for some advice as to if this concern valid? What would be a good way to present this to the owner to persuade her to sell us both branches? [link] [comments] |
Seasonal Business? Act Now if you want Covid Gov’t Funding Posted: 19 Aug 2020 07:29 PM PDT The new GOP "skinny" bill drops the much needed $58 billion in proposed loan funds for a new program set up to aid seasonal businesses, with incredible terms (1%, 20 years, and up to 2x revenue). Unlike most businesses, seasonal business that could not run this year due to covid have to wait an entire year to "reopen" and need help more than non-seasonal businesses. In 60 seconds, you can use resist.bot to write your congressional officials. Tell them to make sure that ANY bill that they pass with small business consideration and more PPP money includes Marc Rubio's proposed coverage for seasonal businesses and its SBA 7(a) loan options. Act Now, the bill is currently getting proposed and it may get a vote as early as this weekend! [link] [comments] |
Software for Booking Appointments Posted: 19 Aug 2020 10:10 PM PDT Hello Folks, Quick Question: Does anyone know of any software or tool I could set up that would allow potential customers to book a service with me. I plan on have a small TV mounting business and want to be able to showcase some services that people can take advantage of. Basically, the customer would go to the page select what type of installation they want, collect payment, and then somehow I get an alert that the customer has booked a service. Anyone have any ideas they can share on pulling something like this off? [link] [comments] |

I have no clue on the FDA and USDA or whatever other approvals that I need to take. Can anybody share some ideas on where to start or any consulting service that they used? [link] [comments] |

Thinking about starting a valet business Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:10 PM PDT I've been working for a mid sized valet company for about two years now, and I've by now realized that my boss is basically never involved other than telling me when to work, I just show up and work. So I got to thinking that if I was able to get some private parties (I live close to some extremely wealthy areas that hire valet for parties commonly) to hire me to valet, and I was willing to do the necessary legwork to make it happen, I could do it on my own. I have the experience (have been doing this for 2 years), and compared to most of the other kids that work for my company, I'm definitely one of the most competent. So I would imagine that I'd need some shirts, an umbrella and cabinet, a sign or two, some cones, and some tickets. But those are basically negligible compared to what the insurance is going to cost. So much so that I wouldn't even bother looking into that stuff until I determined that this was plausible. I don't think I'd end up parking for a restaurant, so I'd probably just be looking at parties. In that case, I'd possibly be able to do the work myself, but in some cases I'd probably end up hiring some of my boys that I trust. So I'm looking at I think some sort of basic liability insurance as well as workers' compensation. I know my valet stuff, but I couldn't even ballpark that insurance cost. Like how would it even be priced? By event? By worker? By month? I should add that I would only operate from late-spring through the summer. If there's some sort of massive oversight in my logic, feel free to flame me because I'm 19 and maybe I don't know shit but this sounds like a semi-solid-respectable idea to me. [link] [comments] |
POS/Credit Card Processing fees recommendations anyone? Posted: 19 Aug 2020 07:22 PM PDT After many years my dad is finally letting me integrate a POS system for our apparel/footwear retail store. I've been doing research on which POS would best fit the type of business we own, but damn there's sooooo many options out there I'm going crazy. I'm kind of leaning towards square plus because it's only $60 a month and it comes with an online store and can integrate quickbooks as well. But the only thing I'm iffy about is the credit card processing fees per transaction (2.5%+.10). We do about $15-20k in sales monthly and average sale is between ($60-$140) so I'm sure the fees will add up. Is there something better out there that has Lower fees, but great POS experience like square or I'm going to have to choose lower fees and not so good POS? I would appreciate any input, thanks. Does anyone know how to fill out the USDOT application for RV transportation? Posted: 19 Aug 2020 05:04 PM PDT Trying to help my girlfriend and her dad. He has a 2018 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck that he wants to haul RVs with across Stateline from dealerships for customers to pick up. We can't seem to put the right information down on the app, and also when it asks what we own, there's no option for pickup trucks, only semis, box trucks, etc. Anyone have experience with starting a transportation service with pickups that can help me, or if you know of a youtube video or something similar that can help us? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2020 10:31 PM PDT How do I start my own business? After getting fired from my job last month, I've been dreading getting another warehouse job. I hate it. I hate working for someone. The past year I've been driving a cargo van delivering office furniture. I liked it. I'm out in the field and have more freedom. That's until I come back into the warehouse of course.. I want to buy a cargo van (I drove a Ford Transit) and have my own delivery service. More specifically I want a product I can ship around the states. I can't think of anything. Mattresses? Solar Panels? Windows? Something I can buy in bulk and sell off of. I have about 40k to invest in. I like being on the road. I like being in charge. I want freedom and I need your help. Thank you [link] [comments] |

Is it worth it to try and sell my painted and embroidered totebags on etsy? Posted: 19 Aug 2020 10:00 PM PDT I'm trying to sell painted and handmade totebags but I can't sell anything in my local online shop since the buyers there don't like to spend more money on handmade items and the local online shop is full of fast items like fast fashion and etc. that are cheaper and most people there prefer those. But i'm wondering if it's worth it to sell on etsy since i have to pay fees when i open a shop and have transaction fess and all. I'm also not sure if it will sell but i think my handmade totebags have a better chance there to sell, but i'm hesitant because of the fees and if it'll be worth opening there? [link] [comments] |

Looking at buying a competitor and need some information. Posted: 19 Aug 2020 09:51 PM PDT Hi all, We are looking at buying a competitor that is about 50-80% our size (changing due to one off jobs). I am after any advice on potential traps or red flags, what are some good questions to ask (them or myself), any good books on integrating the competition and their clients (from a people perspective, not a legal) or any other info and advice. LLC and paying self without pierce the Corporate Veil Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:05 PM PDT Hey all -- I am starting my own business, starting an LLC and figuring out the accounting. Do i need to make myself an employee and add myself to payroll to protect the LLC / my personal liability? I know I cant just withdraw money and pay myself it will pierce the corporate veil. I already have separate bank account and business credit card, but what else should I have setup to make sure there is disparity between personal stuff, and what I may need for a company? What is a good resource for accounting software that is inexpensive or free that can track ins and outs, assets and liabilities, AP / AR etc etc etc. and should i add myself to payroll? Also, my initial investment, if a portion is going to "pay myself" is that tax deductible from my personal as now it belongs to the company? Thanks!!!! [link] [comments] |
Small business owners, how is your daily fight with Spam? Winning? Losing? Posted: 19 Aug 2020 03:25 PM PDT I'm posting to hear your daily dealing with spam, will be delighted to hear what you use and how effective it is. Our story: Neverending spam, for reasons of massive exposure. I own more businesses, lots of email addresses, lots of domains, many from year 2000 or so, still running. As years went by, we started getting tens of thousands of pieces of spam per day. We have both Bayes filtering and all major blocklists out there implemented. The problem is, I see that mass spammers are actually winning this fight, generally. We gradually went from tens of thousands to around 1000-2000 per day through training the filters. So there's still a lot not blocked (fast moving spammers). We considered Gmail but frankly our customers' emails often are blocked by Gmail, too zealous. Didn't work for us. Also, blocklists and Bayes often have their bad matches too, so important emails might go into the pile of spam you can't dig through, or never reaches the inbox. Anyway. These days I've finally managed to implement our custom in-house spam filtering solution that kills the remainder. We went from 1000 to around 10 spam pieces per day across multiple addresses. Finally breathing. No longer having to dig through a mountain in the Spam folder. So now we're looking at this thing we built and looks great, but it's only us using. I wonder if we should make a startup out of it, build it into a platform, offering low cost filtering, separately or in conjunction with existing platforms (works also with any free mail out there or domain host email) . Do you think there is still need for something like this today? Do you still need to filter more emails? Or, is the problem fixed on your end? Your opinion would help me a lot. And perhaps others, if there is still such need. But anyway, if something works or doesn't, would be glad to hear. Thanks in advance for any insight! [link] [comments] |
