My W2s say everything is fine and dandy but I logged onto the SS website and it says I've paid $0 into it for the last year.

He has done this to my two other coworkers too. What can I do?

EDIT: i should have more clearly said for the year of 2018. My 2019 is still pending, for a separate reason where he fucked me over again. My coworker said this happened to him personally twice. And he had to call the SS office and have it corrected with his paystubs. Boss feigned ignorance all the while.

EDIT #2: Yes guys I am already getting a new job

Received a 1099 form from a company I never worked for

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:23 PM PDT

I received a 1099 that says that I earned $5,000 in 2019 from a company that I did not work for in 2019 and that I have never worked for.

When I called their HR and payroll departments, they said that their system says that I was hired as a paid intern in 2019. Not only did I not work for them as a paid intern, I was inpatient in a hospital on the date that I supposedly started with them.

The people I spoke to on the phone seemed to believe me, but they did not know what could have caused this or how to fix it.

    My questions:

-Has anyone had a similar experience?

-What do I need to do to fix this?

    -What could have caused this?

-Can I file my 2019 taxes without reporting the income on this 1099, or do I need to wait for the company to fix this issue?

EDIT : I just checked all three credit reports, and the good news is, everything looks okay on that front. There's no suspicious activity.

I stopped my mom from entering a cryptocurrency scam and now she has $1k worth of Bitcoin sitting in her Coinbase wallet. Advice?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:49 AM PDT

Hello, On July 25, 2020 my mother purchased $877.58 in bitcoin (0.0916 BTC) through Coinbase with the intention of investing in a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme called, Qubittech. After some research and convincing, she decided not to go through with it.

The bitcoin has been sitting in her Coinbase wallet a month now and we are quite unsure of what to do with it. Coinbase charges a $15 conversion fee to exchange it to USD, which I would like to avoid to not lose money on the transaction. I am familiar with investing in stocks through a brokerage, however, bitcoin is unfamiliar territory. Any advice?

edit: as u/furstimus pointed out, it turns out she actually made $173.17. Minus the roundtrip Coinbase conversion fees of 1.49%, she made net $142.66. Will probably hold for now to see if it bounces back before selling.

    edit2: numbers for precision.

edit3: Considering the volatility of Bitcoin, the fact that I know nothing about it, and that it is my mother's retirement money, I decided to sell at $1,047.66 minus a CB fee of $15.61, for net payout of $1,032.05. Thanks to all who responded.

Family member was deported, just received paperwork from the IRS stating he owes taxes

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:57 AM PDT

As the title says, my family member was deported back to his home country last year. Based on the paperwork, his 2018 taxes were audited and he owes about $8,000. My family still filed his 2019 taxes for him at the beginning of this year and we ended up getting a stimulus check for him. We deposited this stimulus check into my account since I had been paying for his living expenses in his home country.

Now that I received paperwork stating he owes this money, am I completely screwed, and will I end up having to pay this? I am not really sure where to even begin with this and I'm really worried.

If you have any advice, please let me know.

I received an Amazon order to my name at my house but I didn't order it. Amazon says they have no record of it in their systems at all. What is the scam? Details inside...

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:14 PM PDT

I received a $50 fan to my house, addressed to my name, and the label says it was shipped from Amazon. The USPS tracking number I got from the label says it was shipped from an Amazon warehouse in Maryland. I didn't order this or pay for it, and it's not in my Amazon order history. I chatted with Amazon customer service and sent them a picture of the label on the box. They claim that label is not from them since they always put an order number on the label and this label does not have an order number. I recently heard of a scam called 'brushing' where Amazon sellers are creating fake accounts and ordering their products to random people so that they can leave positive reviews on their own products. But, in this case, Amazon is saying that this did not come from them as the label doesnt seem to be from them and they don't have the USPS tracking number in their system. Does anyone know what could have happened or what the scam here is? Thanks

Pay off loans or Save money in case get fired

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:18 AM PDT

I had about $280k loans due to med school. I signed on to a job thats giving me $150k sign-on loan towards my student debt, but in return will have to work with them for 5 years.

So now I have $130k total in student loans. My contract says that if they fire me, I will have to pay the remainder of the sign-on loan (whatever is left of the 60 months). This was unfortunately nonegotiable. The loan amount will need to be paid immediately, or else it will be owed at a 12% annual interest rate.

    Should I:

    A) Pay $2500/mo to loans and pay it off in about 5 years. I can save an additional $2500 in a separate savings account, that way when I reach 2.5 years I will have $75k saved in case they fire me. After 2.5 years, I can put the additional $2500 towards loans instead of that saving account.

    B) Pay $5000/mo to loans and pay it off in 2.5 years.

I would just like to be prepared in case they do fire me for no cause (big hospital system, could see them hiring more midlevels over physicians to save money). I do have enough money calculated to put into retirement savings, emergency fund, personal savings, and all other expenses so really just focusing on the above.

What kind of scam is this? Someone hijacked my walmart.com account and used someone else's credit card to place an order using fake names?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:25 PM PDT

I woke up a couple of days ago to 1,000+ spam emails. They all resembled scammy spam emails that I'm familiar with... ones that look like they're from "Amazon.com", "Best Buy", etc., but are really from "amaz0nwearhous@aol.com" or something similar. Normally, these types of emails have a phishing link inside of them - but none of these emails had links inside of them which is probably why they got by Gmail's spam detection and arrived in my normal inbox. My inbox - there were ~1,200 emails like this, all sent within ~5 minutes. Example content of one message (they are all similarly written - and it's only marked as spam because I manually marked it... it was not flagged by Google's spam detection).

These emails were sent from ~20 or so random Gmail accounts, so I manually searched through my inbox for each one and marked them all as spam. I know sometime hackers will flood someone's inbox with nonsense so that a relevant email will go undetected. In this case, it looks like that's what they were doing... After deleting all of the emails from the spam accounts, the only two new emails remaining were both from the real Walmart.com. The Walmart.com emails indicated that two orders were placed using my accounts with the items being sent to random addresses using credit cards that aren't mine... even though my credit cards are saved in my Walmart.com profile. Both orders were sent to separate addresses. One order was a vacuum cleaner and a plush toy, totaling ~$75. The other was a coffee maker and the same plush toy, totaling ~$125. This all happened at around 4:30am. Once I woke up and after I figured out what happened (6:30am), I changed my Walmart.com password and attempted to cancel the orders. It looks like one item of one order (the $100 coffee maker) was actually delivered anyway.

So what's the deal here??? Why did someone hijack my Walmart.com account instead of just making a new one, considering they didn't use my credit card anyway?

Help. Got screwed over at a car dealership. Quick question

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:51 AM PDT

I'm 21 with a good credit score but limited history. Signed for a 5,500 loan on 24% APR with the dealership, because my parents pressured me that it was a good idea, and the car salesman kept saying that's the lowest APR I can get because I'm a first time car buyer. I don't know anything about cars.

I'm trying to save myself from accruing so much debt. I signed some papers, but still haven't picked up the car or finished paperwork at the dealership. Is it too late to look into getting auto financing with a credit union?

I'm just scared that my credit score will tank because I already signed for a loan with the dealership. Is it possible to have a loan with the dealership, and then pay with auto financing with a credit union? Will inquiring for two loans in such a short amount of time tank my credit? I am going to try to talk to the dealership to see if I can cancel the loan.

    Please help.

How to handle missing appliances before home closing.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:29 PM PDT

I am set to close on a house tomorrow, the final walk through was today. During the walkthrough I discovered that the new washer and dryer, that were there during showings and the inspection are now missing. They were not specifically written into our sales contract, however, the real estate listing advertised the house as washer and dryer included. The sellers are now claiming since they weren't in the contract they aren't obligated to leave them, and have in fact already sold them. What is their responsibility of what was advertised versus what's in the contract? If I decided to back out of this closing would I be likely to get my escrow back?

Edit: Thanks for the replies. I will take this as a lesson learned. I am working with an agent, she has taken some responsibility and is offering part of her commission towards a washer and dryer. The seller's agent told my agent that they had planned on leaving the washer and dryer, but they sold it in retaliation for us asking for the refrigerator in the contract, something they never even told us was a point of contention.

Windfall imminent, what do I do?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:00 AM PDT

    Hi all,

New to this sub and have read through the Wiki as thoroughly as time will allow. Am a resident physician currently (annual salary of 55k/year). Awarded a settlement of ~1.7M from a lawsuit. Nervous about the coming years in managing and investing this amount. Current attorney has informed me the pay out period will be 90 days. Here's what I have tentatively planned as I am awarded this settlement. If anyone could give me advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

    1. Erase debt. Student loans are 163k currently. Plan to apply capital to this immediately. I've no other debt.

    2. Interview. Look for several fee-only certified financial advisors.

      1. Will use http://www.napfa.org and XY planning network to search in my area. I'll look for the word "fiduciary" and other key language to see who's in my best interest.
    3. Emergency fund. Place 1-year of current living cost into an emergency savings account (~45k).

    4. Extra purchases. The only item of worth I know I was to get was a new-to-me certified pre-owned vehicle, as my vehicle is close to 10 yrs old and, I feel, needs updating.

Question, what do I do when I receive the money over the next 90 days? Do I immediately place it in my bank account? Do I look at other accounts to place it in while I begin the interview process with a FA?

I just received a back payment of £11k...what now?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:45 AM PDT

First things first, I'm 18, and I live in the UK.

Around 2 years ago, I got told I was no longer eligible for an allowance I receive for medical reasons. Since then we've been fighting back for it, filling in forms etc. A couple weeks ago I got a letter from the court saying that I am now entitled to my allowance again, and I'll be getting any money owed from the last two years.

I woke up today and saw the money in my bank account, but I don't know where to start. My first though was to help pay off some of my Mum's debt, which won't be cheap but it'll clear a lot of issues, and then I wanted to put the rest into a savings account.

I don't want to spend a single penny of it, but there's also a few things here and there that I've been waiting to buy for ages. It's such an overwhelming situation for me.

Just refinanced my 30-year VA mortgage for 2.25%

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:04 PM PDT

    Hi all.

My initial mortgage was 3.5% and I just refinanced my VA mortgage for 2.25%. I guess I should have verified in a subreddit like this to verify all the nuances of the deal, this is my first refinance. The initial mortgage was for $410K. The new closing costs are $11K. The overall loan amount is $411,748. Monthly Principal and interest estimated: $1774 Old monthly payment: $2160 ............APR: 2.382% The mortgage officer told me that "he got scolded by his boss for locking in a rate that low" - maybe that's BS I don't know.

From these initial numbers it seems like I got a great deal. But, I trust other people's expertise and experience over my cursory, beginner's knowledge. Does this seem like a good deal? Am I leaving anything out that you need or is a concern for the money saved?

EDIT: 0.75 % of Loan Amount (Points) $3,088 Processing Fees: $495 Underwriting Fees: $995

    Thanks for your input!

My Landlord took 80% of my $3600 deposit for bogus charges. What do I do?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:44 PM PDT

I just moved out of a house I was living in for FOUR years. I always paid my rent on time, never late once. I moved everything and cleaned the ENTIRE house, swept, wiped the floors, vacuumed, cleaned, everything.

I figured my landlord would take a few hundred bucks for "cleaning", because that's just the way he is. He never treated me good as a tenant, even forced me to allow him to park his RV in my backyard ... and then increased my rent by $50.

My deposit was $3600 four years ago. Now, I just got my deposit "refund"... of $500. He took almost 80%, charging me $2800 in fees that just seem like total lies and BS.

Picture of fees Landlord charged me for.

Do these fees look odd to you? Can any landlords or tenants give me an idea of if what I'm looking at is true, or BS? I thought after living in a place for more than 3 years, "normal wear and tear" isn't deducted from the deposit?

Also, to note, the mention of light bulbs being out is totally fabricated. When we arrived in the house, there were NO LIGHTBULBS and NO BLINDS. I left the lightbulbs and blinds, and they were NOT DAMAGED - not that it matters as I PAID FOR THEM! They were mine, not his!

All his cleaning charges seem totally high and redundant. Like he's charging me way too high to begin with, and then over and over for the same stuff. Like "tile cleaning", wtf?

Can someone please give me some insight and advice what I should do. I was really needing this deposit money for finances, but my landlord took it all. I was already considering suing him for landlord harassment as he was a terrible person to me for four years, and THREATENED got ruin my credit and evict me if I didn't leave even though I still had 16 more days left on my 30 day notice I gave him.

The only thing on the list that I can see are true are 1.) The water board damage in the bathroom - very light, not noticeable, but yes did sustain some water damage after 4 years and 2.) the living room window did crack slightly due to excessive heat at one point. I don't know where he got the idea to charge me for the missing CO2 alarms, or the "17 lightbulbs" or the wall covers missing because none of that is true. The "broken blinds" were MY BLINDS! And the "tin foil on window", was simple tinfoil taped to window to prevent sunlight from coming in because I work night shift. How on gods green earth does it cost $20 to remove tin foil from a window that's just taped on???

Again, here is a link to the picture of the fees he charged me for.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

$200 Bogus Uber Charge. Chase Won't Refund.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:18 PM PDT

Last month I saw a charge on my CC for $200 from Uber, which I immediately disputed. Chase gave me immediate credit and conducted their "investigation." The resolution being Chase ruled it was a legitimate charge and I owed the funds. As evidence they provided an Uber receipt. There are numerous things wrong with this receipt.

    1. The biggest is the receipt shows the last 4-digits of the card used. It does not match my CC number.
    2. Second, the receipt is dated from March. My card was charged in July.
    3. Third, the trip was about 200 miles between cities in California. I live over 2,000 miles away. In March we were under strict lockdown due to COVID-19.

I called Chase customer service but they said they can't help me over the phone and directed me to re-dispute via their website's secure messaging. I did so, and after getting the auto-reply that they'll get back to me in a few business days, I haven't heard anything. In addition to pointing out all the discrepancies with the receipt, I also provided a screenshot of my Uber ride history showing no rides in the month of March.

I also contacted Uber who said they could not find any charge associated with my account. They are also "looking into this matter further."

My question is assuming I cannot get a resolution, what sort of recourse do I have? Is this grounds to file a complaint with the CFPB?

What’s the best way to deposit money from one bank’s checking account to another bank’s checking account to every month?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:12 AM PDT

Just did a lump sum wire because 1. i had the lump sum and 2. the fee was negligible compared to the sum. However, i don't want to pay the fee every month. i also want to keep the money separate from the beginning, so i don't want to build up a lump sum again.

Any ideas (that won't raise red flags)?

My 76yo dad just lost his job, is getting $15,000 severance and we have no idea where to go from here in this next chapter of his life.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I am needing help for my dad. He is 76 years old (single) and just got offered a severance package effective August 31st. He has worked there over 30 years and are on really good terms with employer (they are good people, just bad economy for his industry right now - rural dirt-work construction). We are just trying to figure out where to go from here.

I'm working with him to get a budget laid out but wanted to go ahead and get on here to get things to think about and throw our thoughts out there. I'll be able to update with more concrete numbers later (this just happened 30 mins ago).

-Severance is for $15,000 (is this taxable? What is the amount that will actually be deposited in his bank account from this $15,000) -His only income now will be social security. -His initial calculations put him at approx. $800 a month after all bills. This $800 would have to go towards groceries, clothes, vehicle fuel and maintenance, etc. -His biggest discretionary expense is fast food - he can't really cook. -He has a car he owes $5,000 on & an older truck he would like to sell for a few thousand or whatever he can get. The car is reliable the truck is not. -His idea was to pay off the car with some of the severance money, and put the rest in the bank.

My initial advice to him was to put the remaining severance in the bank and treat it as a supplementary income and not a lump sum. In other words, if he gets through the month and spent most of that $800, he can budget out $200 of that severance as a little spending cushion. If he can keep to it, the $200 would supplement his descretionary income and be his fun money for the month or cover unexpected expenses to keep him from charging to a credit card and could last him 3-5 years depending on how it is taxed and whether or not he uses some of the money to pay his car off.

Should he keep making car payments and not pay off the car?

That is just one of many questions. We would appreciate all the help this sub can give.

How to deal with bill collector

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:57 AM PDT

Hi! So I recently saw on my credit report that I have a bill in collections.. after looking into it, I definitely remember the service (medical bill) but didn't pay it mainly because I'm an idiot and thought I had already paid it. But now it is in collections. But I never remember getting a notice about it going into collections, and it says its been there since March, but I haven't gotten calls, mail, anything about it.. I want to get this settled so I can try to get it off my report.. any suggestions?

    Easy start Certificate

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:30 PM PDT

I have Navy Federal with a certificate for the 1 year Easy start with a minimum start of 50$ and maximum of 3,000$ so I put in 3,000 to max out my dividends I'll make for the year but it didn't stop at 3,000 it just keeps letting me add to it? Is it suppose to be able to let me and I'll still only get the 3.3% back or is there an issue with the system allowing me to add it? I have another certificate I can put up to 10,000 in but that's only a 1% rate should I call them and tell them or ride it out?

Descriptive Website to compare Cost of Living with State and Local Tax built in

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Lost my job back in May and fortunately I've been given severance that will run out at the end of September. I am very close with a couple of job interviews and I have one verbal offer. The verbal offer is in Texas while the last stage interview(on Monday) is in Illinois. I've poked around the internet and have not found a website where I can input a zip code to compare cost of living from one area to the other.

The Nerdwallet(LINK) one explicitly mentions that it does not include taxes, strictly housing, food and entertainment costs. I was wondering if such a tool exists similar to the Nerdwallet one but with the taxes are included. At the very least the big taxes that may differ(state income and state property come to mind).

$2000 Dental Bill for Out-of-Network Dentist

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 03:03 PM PDT

This summer I experienced excruciating tooth pain and scheduled an emergency appointment with a dentist found on Google. I had exceptional dental insurance. I went to this dentist and he referred me to an endodontist. I got a root canal and came back to this dentist for a crown. I gave him all my insurance info and his office told me I was good to go. He performed the procedure but asked my to pay $300 up front. I am not very savvy about this stuff so I agreed.

Fast forward to today, I received a $2000 bill. His office said that he was out-of-network and I would have to pay out of pocket. I called Delta to see what my options were. They said that he should have had me sign an agreement acknowledging that I was getting service from an out-of-network provider. I was not presented with this agreement and I did not sign it. Now after begging and screaming, he has reduced the bill to $1100.

In this time, I have been laid off and am not able to pay. Do I have any options? Of course had I known he was out-of-network I would've gone to a different dentist. I feel lied to and cheated. He wanted to make money off me and didn't want to lose out on business.

Med-school third year dropout. What’s next?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:17 PM PDT

For my sister, she dropped out third year just now (or will in a couple days) because she couldn't handle it and it was pushing her to the brink and id, ya know, rather her pay off her loans than my mom paying for her casket. Sorry if that's too dark. It's 400k.

Anyways, she does have a masters and obviously did work in the hospital for school, it took her to different cities in our state of AZ. What are the next basic general steps? Is she just gonna be in debt for the rest of her life? I'm most likely becoming a psychiatrist so I'll probably pay her back for everything she spent on me with her school money over the past couple years but I won't be finished with school and residency for another 14 years. I might be going into the FBI but I don't wanna get executed when I return to my country to visit family so, yeah. Sorry this isn't about me idk I'm just worried.

Is it done for her? Is the rest of her life finished? The second she turns the drop out form in she's gonna be paying 2k a month to the school and another 2k for rent, not to mention everything else for her and her cat. I'm giving her 600$ to help with rent this month. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!
