Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:57 AM PDT I recently got a call from my former boss. He offered me a higher account management position with a mouth-watering compensation package significantly north of $150k with performance-based bonuses. It is very tempting. My wife thinks it is a no brainer. I think it'd be a step backward. My small business may not be much but it is mine. What do you think? Here is a bit of the backstory: I had worked at this particular big marketing agency for 8 out of the 15 years of my professional career in marketing/software engineering. While there, I produced some of the most successful campaigns for F500 clients. Nonetheless, I was underpaid and invisible. I ended up quitting last year to start my own boutique digital agency. Things have been going fine for the most part. Sure, COVID-19 complicated my plans a bit and I had to recalibrate, but I am still here chugging along. I admit, sometimes I do feel the full weight of being responsible for my team's livelihoods especially in this non-assuring economic/political/social environment. Nonetheless, I enjoy what I am doing now despite the struggles that come with small business ownership. On the other hand, a guaranteed salary like that would help me sleep better again. Also, the new position would put me in direct point of contact with some of the major companies in the world. Would it be dishonesty to consider that as an opportunity to build relationships for the future relaunch of my agency (if I decide to accept)? FYI I'd have to shut down or sell my current agency if I were to accept (conflict of interest clause). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:07 AM PDT Hi guys I'm thinking of starting a pressure washing company, I'm based in the UK and I'm 20 years old so want a little side hustle that can hopefully turn into my own business, I would start off with just a little jet wash doing small jobs and work my way up to a professional setup cleaning large scale driveways, patios, decking, the lot, any ideas if this a good idea? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:26 AM PDT I'm a small C-corp owner/single employee company. I let my previous accountant go a couple months ago after months of unanswered calls, emails, bad advice and generally just feeling like they didn't give a shit. I use Xero and Gusto, the books aren't super complicated, money in, expenses out all from one credit card. I've gotten quotes from several CPA's through the "Xero Recommended" tools and ended up finding huge firms that were pushing bookkeeping services more than CPA work, or CPA firms with absurd rates for my one person company. Almost everything is virtual now, any tips on how you found your accountants? I'm located in NYC (And understand that the costs are higher here) but I can't even find a good way to look for Xero based accountants in the state/surrounding area. How do I find the smaller firms? It's gotten to the point that i'm in a time crunch with September 1 rolling around the corner. I'm expecting to pay anywhere from 1k - 2k for the tax prep, and based on my research I think that's a reasonable range for the services I need. Any pointers/tips? [link] [comments] |
Do you ever message your employees after work hours? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:35 PM PDT Background: I own a small woodworking company. Artisan stuff. Hands on work, working in teams, sometimes in a workshop and sometimes installing on site. Six person team. Generally I've generally been a 'don't message the team off the clock' kind of manager. But had an incident happen recently and want to throw it out to you all for feedback. We were on site with one new team member and a more experienced team member, on a Friday. Challenging day, things did not go perfectly, and we ended up having to problem solve a bunch on the fly. New employee was having trouble getting the flow of the install (fair enough for a newbie) but there were some instances, like standing and looking at their phone when not being directly given a task (as opposed to finding something useful to do) that were not productive. Day ended and we were working up till the last minute and new employee had to leave for something they had booked, again fair enough. Once I got back to the workshop I fired them a quick message saying a few things they did that were good, and a few that were less than ideal (the phone thing among others). Not coming in too hot, but trying to be clear about the expectations and get it out there while the day was still fresh in everyone's mind. We were going right back to the same site on Monday to finish up so wanted to communicate asap before the same things came up the next day. After sending it, had some self doubt as to whether it's reasonable to text an employee feedback after work on a Friday, even if well meaning. This spurred me to ask how you all (who are in similar positions) deal with whether or not to communicate with employees after work hours. [link] [comments] |
My suppliers selling on amazon and to individuals at wholesale price is destroying my business Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:58 AM PDT In the past I would buy products wholesale and sell them at my store. Now the suppliers have slowly been brought up by one bigger supplier, who allows and individual to go to their website, make an account and buy ONE ITEM at wholesale price. Not only that but the supplier has their own store within amazon where they've put their entire catalogue, selling everything slightly cheaper than I can afford to (even more so when you consider that I can't offer free shipping if someone orders online, whereas an amazon prime member will get that free shipping). How can any small business compete with this? We can't just find a new supplier, they are the only supplier and they've bought all the competition. Previously the supplier had promised to not undercut bricks and mortar shops, but that's what they're doing. They don't care for small businesses. Isn't it in their interest to have as many small retailers selling their products? Once were all out of business it'll just be them selling direct through amazon with amazon taking a big cut and eventually making their own version of their products probably. It's very depressing after decades of business. It seems buying wholesale is dead since everything is drop shipped or fulfilled by amazon. Any advice? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:07 AM PDT Hi, I'm currently trying to start up a small earring business but am struggling. I only want to make back the money to cover costs (and maybe a couple of extra dollars, just for my time) but I'm struggling in promoting my Instagram and Depop. I honestly do not want to invest more money but I feel there is no other way to advertise. My target audience is the younger generation as I've made earrings shaped like cigarettes and bongs as well as plenty of other designs, like food and cartoon character themed duos. Please share your experiences. Tia x [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:58 AM PDT My partner and I offer a dog training service. I have a client that booked services with me for an aggressive dog and another dog that didn't have behavior issues in April. The aggressive dog bit 1 person and they reached out for training. The dog was a rescue and they were aware that the dog could be aggressive when they adopted. They didn't exercise caution and the dog bit a pizza delivery guy. We only require a deposit (per dog) to reserve kennel space. We have limited space. Payments and deposits are non-refundable for this reason. This is explained on our contract. The client paid in full for both dogs. The client admitted that the dog has heart worms still because the refuse to use the "fast-track" methods to treat the dog. We recommended that they speak with their vet for the vet's professional recommendation. The vet said it would be best to wait until the dog was free of heart worms before sending the dog to train. That meant we had to reschedule until August per the vet's recommendation. We didn't want to strain the dog if it already was in danger from the heart worms. The client agreed to do this. In June, the client reached out again and said that they needed a waiver of some kind taking responsibility if anything happened to their dog during training because of their heart worms. They said that the dog had bitten 3 more people and that they needed the dog to be picked up for training as soon as possible. We explained that although that is a difficult situation, we needed to respect our schedule because everyone pays for their appointments. They requested a refund and we referred them to their contract. That made them upset. They made threats of legal action and going online. We said they could do so if they wanted to. We weren't refusing service or denying them service. In fact, since they booked we have been accommodating them the best we can. They reluctantly agreed to keep the training to August. They also admitted that one of the people that got bitten by the dog was a construction worker that was in their home. I asked what happened they said they left the dog in the kennel, left to go speak with the neighbor, and while she was gone one of her kids let the dog out of the kennel and it bit the guy. That's negligent. I can only assume that the other 2 bites were also a result of negligence. Fast forward to August, they have been a headache. We attempted to address some of the threats they made while they were upset because we wanted to make sure that we were all on good terms and moving forward. They got super offended and started making more threats. We tried to be flexible. We tried to work with them. Nothing was good enough. Eventually, we decided we didn't want to do business with them after dealing with them for 5 months. We decided that it would be too much to deal with and that the danger we would be putting ourselves in with their dog was not worth the trouble we were receiving from the client. We made an exception to our refund policy and refunded them 50% of what they paid. That wasn't enough. The client is ex military. Last night we got a letter from an Army lawyer requesting their full refund because we were the ones that decided to not work with them. We have 10 days to pay out. We don't feel that it's fair for us to lose out because of their negligence and their threats. How can we fight this? Should we even fight this? [link] [comments] |
New business one liner activity. Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:24 AM PDT Hey all! I'm a new business owner and have been working on a one liner, marketing pitch talking about what problems I solve and the benefits I offer to my potential clients (standard stuff). (Note I'm not a sales person) Without context I posted my pitch below. I'd love to hear some feedback on what you think I do, what you'd expect from engaging with my company, if this is something most businesses look for, and any suggestions. Thanks in advance. —— "Most businesses don't know how customers experience their brand. How to ship baked goods from a small, independent business? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:34 PM PDT Not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this question. If not, forgive me. For the past year I've been researching how to run an independent cookie/bakery business under a cottage food license. Typically, the rules state that orders can NOT be shipped, and must be picked up locally. However, I've seen a few bigger businesses offer shipping on their cakes and cookies (places like Milk Bar, Junior's Cheesecake). And even some really small businesses which give me the impression they are made at home have their goods shipped (The MonAlicia Bakes). Am I missing something? Is this just something anyone can do and I'm unaware? I'm from Los Angeles, California. [link] [comments] |
Please help finding clothing manufacturer Posted: 21 Aug 2020 10:29 PM PDT I am a young adult interested in starting a small online fashion brand. I have ideas and designs but I am just missing a manufacturer. My friends has a manufacturer where they just send designs and they will send her the clothes. I am trying to find something like this but I am struggling. I am pretty inexperienced and don't know what to do. Any suggestions of decent priced clothing manufacturers that can ship worldwide? [Canada] What Services can a non CPA provide? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:01 PM PDT I'm in BC and I currently have a Bookkeeping firm where I only do basic bookkeeping. I don't have my CPA and am not thinking about getting it. What other services can I provide without my CPA? Can I do payroll and tax prep? If so my goal would be to provide bookkeeping, tax prep, and payroll and then outsource the tax stuff, since this would be more convenient for the clients. Or should I just focus on Bookkeeping myself and hire a CPA employee do to the taxes for the clients. [link] [comments] |

My brother and I trying to figure out if we can operate a business from two different states. Posted: 21 Aug 2020 03:34 PM PDT I live in Oklahoma and my brother lives in Texas. We are finishing up the LLP for an apparel business in Texas but want to know what I have to do to be able to operate in Oklahoma. Does Oklahoma recognize a foreign LLP, from what I research on I only see foreign LLC's, or does Oklahoma even require it? If anyone has an information I would really appreciate it. This is our first business. [link] [comments] |

Using home as collateral on business loan Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:23 PM PDT I am considering purchasing a small business and the lender has confirmed that I will need to put a second mortgage on my home in order to be approved for the loan. My wife and I are discussing the pros and cons of this and her biggest concern is if the business goes under our home will be repossessed by the bank, regardless of whether we are still making the loan payments. My understanding is as long as I am making those loan payments on time, the bank doesn't care if the business is still open or not. Is there anyone with experience who can tell me which one of us is correct? [link] [comments] |
Should I start my S-Corp myself or through accountant? Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:43 AM PDT Hello, I'm in the process of starting a business with my wife. I just spoke with my accountant and he said they charge $1,000 for filing an s-corp which includes all of the documentation (EIN, tax ID, etc) It looks like I could do it myself using Inc File and purchase the Gold package for $250. Am I missing something here? What is an accountant doing for me that justifies paying the additional $750 for setting up an s-corp? I am going to use him for the tax prep (he charges $800). I just can't wrap my head around the initial filing costs. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
