Posted: 31 Aug 2020 06:29 AM PDT EDIT: Thank you all for your helpful contributions. My mind is a little more at ease, and I know my girlfriend's family feels a little better knowing they aren't getting toted off to prison for 20 years. They were very concerned. Thanks again, and I may post an update if anything worth noting happens. Hello /r/legaladvice, I'll try to keep this short. This happened in the state of Illinois [not Chicago]. For the past few weeks, someone has been harassing my girlfriend's parents and their neighbors with a drone. This has been especially disturbing since it's usually when the women of the neighborhood are in their pools in the back yard, which has been specifically noted and corroborated multiple times, it's very creepy. The thing will fly over people's yards and pools, drop down to get a better view, and then hover there, recording for at least 10-15 minutes each time. So after a few weeks of this, and the neighbors calling the police, but the police not being able to do anything, refusing to do anything, or find the operator, my girlfriend's parents took action on what they perceived as trespassing and invasion of privacy. So the next day when it came back, they took a BB gun and popped it in the chassis. The drone was still in working condition enough to fly off just fine. I assume it returned home without issue because about two days later, my girlfriend's parents received a letter taped to their front door with a still image from their 4K footage, and threatening to press federal charges with penalties "up to 20 years in prison" unless they pay him $1500 immediately for "destroying an aircraft with a weapon". According to some cursory Googling (I am no lawyer, obviously), the owner of the drone was already breaking several FAA regulations including: >5. Keep your drone within your visual line of sight, or within the visual line-of-sight of a visual observer who is co-located (physically next to) and in direct communication with you. This is not possible with the heavy woods in the area, and depth at which this person was flying into properties. >6. Do not fly at night unless your drone has lighting that allows you to know its location and orientation at all times. These flights would sometimes occur around or after dusk. >8. Never fly over any person or moving vehicle. This drone would regularly hover directly above people to specifically record them. >11. Do not operate your drone in a careless or reckless manner. I mean come on, this is clearly gross and harassment. Okay, now that I've got my complaining out of the way, does this guy have any real leg to stand on? If he attempts to press charges, is it likely he would be successful? I just can't imagine any respectable court of law siding with this guy for what has obviously been some form of trespassing, sexual harassment, invasion of privacy, and recording without consent. Any advice? EDIT: Thank you all for your helpful contributions. My ex-wife just got a DUI a block away from picking up our daughter Posted: 30 Aug 2020 06:27 PM PDT Don't know what to do next, my mind is racing at 100 miles per hour. My ex-wife and I share split custody of my daughter and she picks her up on Sunday night. Tonight she texted me saying she was in an accident just around the corner from my house. I walk over there and her car is totaled and there were cops talking to her. Apparently she hit a tree really hard and thought that it was a minor accident. The cops performed a field sobriety test, which she failed, and then made her blow. They made me stand back, so I don't know what she actually blew, but they handcuffed her and took her into the station and told me that they couldn't tell me anything and she would have to tell me once she was released. She has another DUI from a little over 2.5 years ago and is still dealing with that. The fucked up thing, and what is wracking my brain, is that she was going to pick up our daughter in that state (which I wouldn't have let her). I'm pissed off beyond belief. Ready to take full custody of my daughter, but I know there will be a fight. What ground do I have here? What can I do? EDIT: Thanks for the replies. Still trying to figure out what's even going on. Cops won't really tell me anything, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow. Going to contact a lawyer and see what they say. EDIT: I live in Illinois [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:21 AM PDT Throw away cause we're both on Reddit. We own the house 50/50. The down payment was hers but I've been paying most of the mortgage payments. We don't have anything in writing other than joint ownership of the house. The house needed a lot of work and we're expecting to make a pretty good amount of money on it. But I'm not finished with the majority of the work. I'm doing the work myself, I'd like to stay in the house and finish what I've started. What should my next move be? I'm overwhelmed and still in shock. Found out last night. I'm in MO, USA. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 09:04 AM PDT My roommate and I are renting a house in Denver, CO. Our lease is from July 1, 2019-September 30, 2020. At the beginning of August we asked our landlord if we could terminate our lease a month early — my roommate is moving into her new apartment September 1st and I'm moving to Utah for a new job after losing mine due to COVID. In response to our request, our landlord said he would be flexible around the end date. On August 27, he asked us if we could be moved out by August 31 (we have this in a text message conversation), to which we agreed and scrambled to be moved out by this weekend. Today, August 31, we texted him that we would be completely moved out by the end of today and asked how to proceed regarding security deposits and whatnot. He then tells us he hasn't found anyone to move in yet, so we still have to pay for September rent. This is where I'm looking for advice, since he asked us to be out by August 31 and we have the text conversation, can he go back on that and still make us pay for September? [link] [comments] |
Water company making up over 6000 gallons? Posted: 31 Aug 2020 10:16 AM PDT So i recently recieved a letter from my wayer company saying my property has had excess usage from its normal 1400 gallons to 7300 gallons and i will be getting billed accordingly. This set off red flags for me as my tenant calls me if the wind blows funny. So i called her, shes been helping her daughter for the last few weeks and hasnt been home and nobody else lives there. So i called a plumber and meter guy i know and we set off to check the house. Its a single story rancher with 1 bathroom. The house has been inspected top to bottom by 2 professionals and myself. Nothing is abnormal and my tenant says she hasnt done anything out of the oridany. When i called the utility company they immediately started rambling off possible problems saying it had to be me (had already gotten everything checked). The weird thing is a bunch of people in the county are having the same issue, sudden ridiculously high usage that they know they dont do. Water company is saying its all us and we better pay up.......this is in west virginia if it matters and any help would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Sued by former employer for relocation a year after termination Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:10 PM PDT I worked for a large company that game me a sign on bonus and relocation. When covid struck they began sending people home and started laying others off. They asked if I wanted to leave or be furloughed so I left and moved states to work for another company. This occurred just under a year of being at the company but because they offered to let me go I was told I would not have to payback the sign on and relocation bonus. Now, a few months shy of a year after termination I get called by a third party law firm saying I owe a massive amount of money and fees/attorney costs and they will be taking me to court if it is not payed today. I worked in VA, now in CO, and the law firm is in TX. If that matters. Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. I'm needing to decide if I pay a 10 percent down payment to defer the court proceedings for 14 days while I figure this out, should I lawyer up, or bend over and pay this large sum of money I do not believe I owe. Thank you, ABC [link] [comments] |
Someone is using my home address as theirs to buy a house in a different state. Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:27 AM PDT Ohio- So, last week I have received mail w my address on it , for someone else from MY mortgage company regarding thier loan application. I literally saw my mortgage company name on it , didnt think anything of it ans opened it. Then realized it was in a different name . Today I receive a Hud loan application packet with that same 1st name they used in the other letter this time w a different last name, to refinance a quarter million dollar home in another state. The loan numbers on both pieces match. Her application states she lives at my address for the exact amount of time we have lived here since we purchased our home 3 years ago. My husband thinks there is nothing wrong with this. But this seem super skeptical to me and I have not a clue on what to do about it. I cant wrap my head around why someone else is using my address as theirs. Any advice anyone has would be very helpful. This is really stressing me out. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:32 AM PDT I sold my car in May 2019 when I learned I was moving out of California (I'm in TX now). I sold it to one of those kinda seedy "Cash for Cars" companies (We'll call them "CD" for the sake of this explanation). I have the receipt and bill of sale. In November 2019, I received a parking ticket in the mail from the city of Los Angeles. That same month, I also received mail informing me the car was involved in an accident, and another car was totaled. I responded to the parking tickets via mail (per the instructions on the ticket) explaining I was no longer the owner, and attached the bill of sale. I responded to the insurance company via email with an explanation, the bill of sale, etc... I received a response from the insurance company saying I was off the hook. I also contacted "CD" and told them to remove my name and info from the car. They told me they would take care of it. I hadn't heard anything since December, so I assumed it was all taken care of. Fast forward to today This morning I received in my mailbox:
I suppose my main questions are:

New townhome doesn’t have mail, internet, or trash service [Iowa] Posted: 31 Aug 2020 10:11 AM PDT TL;DR: This brand new complex has no internet, no trash service, and no mail service. There is no time table for these beyond "we are working on it" (but they still expect the full rent amount of course) I moved into a brand new townhome this past week, I never was able to see the property prior to signing the lease due to it being new construction. Since it was only a year lease I didn't think it was that big of a deal, all the renders online looked really nice, I was good with it. Due to Covid, construction was delayed by over 2 months, which I understand. However I think they cut corners to get back on track. They also pushed people into these units before they were reasonably ready for occupation. Right now we have no mailboxes so I have to go to the post office to pick up my mail, this wouldn't be a huge problem but my work hours are longer than most and the post office is not open other than when I'm working. I will have to take time off work to run to get mail for the foreseeable future. We also have no trash or recycling service, their solution for this is that we should walk around the construction area of the other buildings that aren't finished and find a trash bin somewhere and use that. We also have no internet. I didn't know that I wouldn't have internet right away until after they had me sign the lease. As I'm currently working from home this would've been a huge dealbreaker. They've offered to cover the cost of adding a hotspot to my mobile plan for 1 month ($10) so that's what I'm doing for now but that's less than ideal. There's also no timetable for when internet will be installed, so it could be more than a month. Overall I feel like they cut too many corners and allowed tenants to move in way too early. Luckily for me I moved in when I did, my neighbors moved in a day before I did and said they didn't even have water for the first day. Is it reasonable of me to request a large rent concession as my standard of living is nowhere near where I believed it would be when I signed the lease? Are there any other options I might not be thinking of? How large of a concession should I request? How should I go about asking for one? Should I request one now, or after everything is resolved so I know how long everything was an issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:08 AM PDT My mother has never been able to take care of herself or her children. She's been on the welfare system as long as I can remember. My father had majority custody of me and my siblings growing up except for weekends and a few years where she put in more of an effort to keep us. Long story short she is once again without a job and without a home. My husband and I have worked hard and own our home. We said we'd like my sister to stay with us as we have a second bedroom. My mother intends to move into a house with three of her friends 40 min from the rest of the family and far from my sisters friends. My sister said she'd much rather stay with us. My sister has been 'home schooled' by my mom, as in she's lied on all the paperwork she files with the state and my sister is now 16 with almost no education. I want to start her in some GED prep courses and I've been looking into alternative diploma classes because my sister has expressed interest in college. My mother essentially has no plan for school for my sister, has medicaid that most doctors wont take. I spoke with my mom about giving me guardianship so I can take over my sisters schooling and get her on a decent health insurance plan. She said no. I believe she wont give guardianship because as of right now my mother not only gets to claim my sister as a dependent on her taxes, but she also has the SS checks that my sister receives because of her father. My mother wants to parse out amounts of it to me a month instead of the money meant for my sisters care going to the person caring for her. I've been looking around for an attorney because I'm obviously going to need help with this situation, but I wanted to know what mine and my husbands rights are and if you think we will be able to gain custody/guardianship. This is in Maryland. Any advice about things I haven't thought of that I need to do for mine and my sisters well being would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 10:21 PM PDT About six months ago my husband and I received these weird Instagram phone calls and messages from an account I've never seen before. They were threatening to hurt me and my 1 year old daughter including pictures of her in the messages with captions like "cute child". They sent more messages to my husband trying to lure us out to places to "meet up and talk" regardless of us not knowing who they are. When we blocked the account the person ended up sending my business an email claiming they were going to "see us tomorrow" and "maybe then we will take things more seriously". The next day a box of dead fish was left in front of our business with a note reading "someone is going to get hurt". At that point I filed a police harassment report, but we have no video proof of the person doing this, so it's a dead end. We never replied to any of the messages, just blocked the person. We own a restaurant and host/hang a variety of street art from local artists in our city. Turns out this person is harassing us because they have my husband mistaken for someone they have "beef" with in the street art world. We've just been hoping they'd gotten bored with us not responding and would go away on their own. A few days ago they leave a blasphemous review about our business claiming they got violently ill. It's definitely them because they used the same email and alias to harass us before. They have pictures of their street art as well as the same Instagram account name that messaged us before on their profile. I've contacted the review site and they refuse to take it down because they can't prove it is a false review. Is there anything else I can do to legally stop this person? At the very least is there any way I can get the review taken down? Edit: We are in PA [link] [comments] |
Tree Issue w/ Neighbor [USA/Georgia] Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:25 AM PDT Hi All, I'm having a minor issue with a neighbor who owns the home diagonally across from the back of my property (our property lines only touch in the back corner). Recently a rather large tree on his property, near the back of his property line, has been struck by lightning (twice). The last time, it threw huge chunks of bark/wood about 6' in length and 1-1.5 inches thick like shrapnel into my driveway / front yard (along with my neighbors yard who borders his yard directly from behind). No damage was done, so we let him know what occurred and that we were concerned about the tree (it's a rental property). He had several tree services come out and give him quotes. The best quote was $3000 (it's a larger old growth tree that's probably around 100ft high). The options that he presented to us were: 1) Leave the tree to do what it will. If it strikes our house, insurance will cover it (both his/ours). If it doesn't strike house, we are responsible by statue to clean it up. 2) Myself and my neighbor chip in $400 each, and he pays the remaining $2200 to have it removed. Now, I really have no issue chipping in $400 to not have to worry about this in the future, and will probably do so. However, given there may be additional negotiation, I wanted to know legally where I stand if that damaged tree were to fall into our driveway / property. I believe Georgia law says that you are responsible for the tree if it falls onto your property (even if it's not rooted on your property), but also has a clause that says unless the tree is dead or diseased. Does anyone know if a lightning strike (tree is visibly split) counts? Is there anything I should get for evidence of damage (other than photos of the tree) in the case that negotiations go sour and we can't come to an agreement (and the tree stays)? Thanks! Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:54 AM PDT Florida My fiance and I jumped the gun a little bit cause we were homeless and moved into a house that is turning toxic quickly. Our landlady claims she doesn't have to give us anything more than the vague lease I have (and can share a picture of) that states we need to give her 60 day notice and that our lease is 6 months long. Well since then she has added weird rules verbally such as we can't be in the house when she has an appointment to show the house and in the off chance we can be here she demands we stay in our room. Now I'm a diabetic so I need to be able to eat when I start feeling sick... We aren't allowed food in our rooms and she takes hours with these appointments. This landlord doesn't believe in diabetes or any other health issue, she in fact informed me that I could easily get rid of my extensive medical history by eating right and exercising on a damaged foot. We are expected to clean not only after ourselves but the other 2 roommates and the landlord as well. She stated since she lives here too she can do whatever she wants and deny/remove people as she sees fit. She also told us she doesn't have to give us back the deposit if we break any of her rules.. Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:39 AM PDT I work in a grocery store in South Carolina. About a week ago I slipped on a carpet that had water underneath it. I told the manager and him and someone else came and cleaned up the water, and asked if I was hurt. I didn't feel anything at the time so I told him I was fine. The next day I noticed pain on my elbow, and thats when I realized I hurt it from the fall. I didn't think much of it at first, I thought I had slept on it or something, but the pain was constant throughout the whole day, so I told the store manager. We did all the paperwork and all that for an associate accident, and i was sent to a walk in clinic, where I was told that it was just bruised up, but I shouldn't lift anything heavier than 20 lbs and to come back in two weeks. I go back to work the next day and almost slip in the same spot. I ask around a bit and I'm told that multiple people have fallen there before, they just weren't really hurt. What's happening is one of the coolers in the produce section leaks and gets water under a carpet, which causes the carpet to have little traction and if you step on it wrong that part of it slides along the floor. This is a reoccurring issue and the managers surely know about it. Should I just ignore it and try and not walk on it, or should I tell someone higher up? I'm not really worried about hurting myself but this sounds like a hazard for anyone else, especially people that don't work there. I took a video of the floor under the carpet being wet just in case. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2020 07:11 PM PDT My current lease ends August 31, 2020 and I have paid the rent for the full month of August. My landlord asked if he could have the keys back on Friday (August 28) so that he could have the house professionally painted and cleaned before the new tenants move in on September 1. I explained to him that I would not be able to move into my new house until August 31 and he responded saying "I went ahead and cancelled my paint guys and my cleaning crew. I'm going to count on you to do the job that they we're going to do... I'm going to bring you all the paint samples I have for this house". I am a full-time medical school student and I cleaned and painted to the best of my ability (the house looks great just minor knicks in the trim which he didn't give me paint for) yet he said his new tenants are "very meticulous". I paid a fairly large deposit + an additional $800 for my pet. Before this whole ordeal, I was not expecting to get much of my deposit back. However, now that I've done a lot of the work how do I make sure I get most of my deposit even if the new "meticulous" tenants ask for a professional painter/cleaner after they move in? Also, was I obligated to do that work because I wasn't able to move out early? Edit: THANK YOU ALL! I've moved into MY new house! No more landlords for me! I've taken plenty of pictures and videos of the house before turning my keys in. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:04 AM PDT I bought a home last year in PA, and an insurance company (I'll call "A") started sending me FAT letters in the mail with a proposal for home insurance (I'm not sure how they even got the address of the house I was renting at the time). This included premium policies, asking for signatures, etc. I looked them up online, and they had terrible reviews. I never went with that company but went with a different insurance company. I never responded to that company, never signed anything, literally never even spoke or dealt with anyone from that company in my life. Fast forward to yesterday, (almost 8-9 months later since they sent me that packet in the mail!) and now I receive a letter from a collections agency stating that Insurance Company A "has placed the above reference account with our office for collection activity." It says some random account number, and says my "account balance" is $103.00. It literally says nothing else on the document except when their hours are, how I can submit payment and that I have 30 days to respond or they'll believe the claim is valid. Please help! Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:33 PM PDT Location: USA Maryland My dog was mauled by two dogs that ran loose and bit him on his leg and neck/chest. He required surgery, stitches and stents, a bill of $1300 so far. I realized that I also got injured on my wrist during the attack while trying to break them up. The owner gave a name and number but in the rush I did not confirm it and it seems this was fake. I have no way of contacting him. There is security footage of the event, but the building says they cannot share it with me unless I have a warrant. The county police have been unhelpful and not taking a report. I didn't realize I was injured at the time however, so I'm guessing they are considering it only an animal attack. The officer basically said that it's not worth the resources to investigate with a detective. What can I do to get the video so I can identify this person? Am I out of luck if the police do not want to cooperate? This happened in a public courtyard of the building complex that has the footage. Is there any liability on their part? Thank you. Father's landlord died, landlord's friends are trying to kick him out (Hawaii) Posted: 31 Aug 2020 11:30 AM PDT Hi Reddit, my (23f) dad (69m) is currently facing a rental issue. He lives in Hawaii. For context to the situation, my dad currently lives in basically a yurt on his wealthy friend's property who was the same age as him. My dad is not very well off financially but physically is in much better shape than his landlord was so they had a verbal agreement to where my dad would live on the property in the yurt and would pay him rent as well as take care of this guy's dogs, do some yard work, pick up groceries for him, etc. basically just help him out with day to day tasks. My sister (19) informed me that he is currently paid to live there through October. My sister lives in Hawaii with him, I live in Colorado. As noted before, the landlord already had heart issues and was pretty much bed ridden. A couple weeks ago the landlord went on an extensive two week drinking bender to the point where my dad had to call an ambulance for him and he was taken to the hospital. Two days ago my dad got word the landlord had passed away. My dad is very upset about this situation because the landlord was his friend and the landlord's other friend's are already trying to take over. Yesterday, one of the landlord's friends showed up and took away the two dogs my dad had been watching and started talking about how they were going to move my dad out and take over. Today my dad got a call from one of the landlord's other friends that they think he poisoned the landlord and killed him so he could have his property. I am not sure if this man has any family or what is listed in his will. He was not married and I do not think he had any children (it was assumed he was gay but never confirmed). I want my dad to get a lawyer but again he is not very well off financially and this is on the Big Island where everything is just a little bit harder to accomplish. I just don't want to see these people come in and try and push out my dad when my dad and this man had a verbal contract for the last year. Any advice on how to move forward would be appreciated. My Sister stole $6,000 from my mom while she was sick Posted: 31 Aug 2020 01:37 PM PDT Atlanta, GA I've been taking care of my sick mother for about a month now. She's dying of end-stage liver disease and suffers from a disorder called hepatic encephalopathy, which causes memory loss and extreme confusion. When she was coherent, she gave me the passwords to her banking accounts to monitor and make sure bills were being paid, nothing funny was going on, etc. I logged into her Wells Fargo account for the first time yesterday and discovered that my sister has been transferring (the account is a joint account) lump payments to her own checking account for about a month - to the tune of over 6 grand. I confronted her and realized right away she was on meth again (and dating an abusive meth dealer that takes her car and phone from her). She admitted to it and said she would pay it back as soon as she could. Later that day, I texted her again, and her boyfriend responds. It's clear that he is the one (probably both of them) that is stealing the money. He, of course, told me the money would be back in the account by the end of the day today (lie). I was able to close the account this morning and salvage whatever was leftover, but someone has to be held responsible here. The medical bills are piling up and I am at the end of my emotional rope. My dilemma - it's a joint checking account, so the transactions aren't able to be deemed as fraudulent, because she was a signer on the account. I also don't want to involve the police if I can help it - as a matter of personal politics. What are my options? Small claims? Good ol' fashioned ass whooping? [link] [comments] |
Forced out of job after turning in report on harrassment Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:15 AM PDT I spent 6 years working a medical facility (NY). Last summer, I began a report on sexual harassment, done to me by my boss. Last fall, I received a text from my boss, meant for the director of operations, which included a heavy insult about me. He sent it to me on accident. I figured my boss would force me out before I could tell on him. I immediately called HR, told them about this incident, then completed and handed in the report a week later (10+ pages). HR stalled a while, then during winter called me for a meeting. I was told they didn't doubt any part of my report. But then they asked if the harassment had continued since I came to them. I told them no, and they suggested to me the matter should then be resolved. The harassment included a moment of forcibly grabbing a private area of mine, "playful" punches to my shoulders and ribs, disclosing very private, personal information about me to all of my coworkers in a meeting (to which, I was told, all the workers shared a huge laugh), receiving a lewd photo via text that was explained as an "accident", lewd comments, and of course the ugly insult I accidentally received. HR told me that my boss was punished, but that they couldn't tell me how. I knew this was inadequate but didn't want to fight anymore, so I left it alone and carried on with work. The year went on quietly, until one day some weeks ago, my boss started up again with minor, sly things. I got angry and asked him how he still had his job after sexual harassment. I called HR that day, then spoke to my director (a man who knows about bosses antics but ignores them and in my view, helps to cover it up). He asked why I called HR. Since our facility was handing out severance packages, I told him I meant to inquire about getting one myself. He scoffed, explaining I wasn't there long enough to be eligible, and that I knew how tight we were after COVID-19 changes in our routines. He beseeched me to quit. I explained to him that I had done nothing wrong, and since this was how I fed my family, I had no reason to run off. That weekend, two coworkers approached me, separately, after hearing about what happened (but without me telling them any part of the drama I had with boss last year), and told me that before I began working there, the boss was already accused of and taken to court over sexual harassment. They said loyal coworkers went to court for him, smeared the accuser, and the boss was acquitted. The next shift, my director called me into his office. Despite what he previously said, he suddenly reversed his position on severance. He told me he spoke with HR, and was told to make me an offer. I was told the amount of time I'd receive severance. I asked him about the figure I'd receive for each payment. He told me it was my "average pay". I explained that I couldn't make a decision unless I had the actual figure. He asked me what I brought in on my last 2 checks, and confirmed that my pay didn't fluctuate, and told me the figure would be based exactly on this. I was given the night to decide. I called him the next day and told him that I'd like to take the offer, but that I still wanted the number. He got annoyed, saying he already explained it to me, and that it "couldn't possibly be" anything other than what I bring in on average. I asked him to send me an email confirming an offer was made to me, and I accepted. He told me a to get in touch with a rep who would explain everything to me. After a few days, the rep from HR who received my fall report called me, and told me the number, which was much less than my average pay. He explained that the pay didn't include what I brought in on my shift differential, which was a big part of my pay. I told him that this was repeatedly not reflected in the offer by my director, and that I believed this was done on purpose. That day, I told HR and my director that in light of the figure being misrepresented, I would like to renege the agreement. I was told by two employees before this that we had 2 weeks to renege on the deal and keep our jobs. HR was doubtful I could get my job back and I explained that I understood I had some time to renege. They wanted to know who told me this, which I found irrelevant. They dragged their feet, asked me if I would accept a position somewhere else in the facility, told me they'd get back to me before vacation, and dragged some more. Finally they reached me, the same person who got my report last year, and told me I couldn't have my job back, or any other position there, because of COVID cuts. I have not signed the severance documents because there is a general release clause that states I cannot attempt to hold anyone there accountable for anything they've done. I would like advice on how I should move forward. At the very least, my ex boss should be stopped. The boss is an impulsive, cruel, and perverted person, and I don't think after enduring bullying and harassment and the like, I should just simply turn away and let them do this to a third or fourth person. I do not have the lewd photo that was sent to me, it disappeared some minutes after I received it, but I still demanded (on text) an explanation, saying my S/O saw it and was furious (which was true), and he excused it as an accident. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Is my apartment complex allowed to move tenants who test positive for COVID-19? (MS) Posted: 31 Aug 2020 12:28 PM PDT I live in Mississippi, in an apartment complex that primarily caters to students (though I am not a student). I found out recently that my complex is moving people who test positive for COVID-19 out of their assigned units and into unused units in the basement for the duration of their quarantine. Would this be something that's allowed, given that we sign a lease for a specific unit? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2020 08:40 AM PDT I work for a small (~10 employees), but very successful company in the event/wedding industry in NYC. My boss told me to go on unemployment so they could keep the company afloat, since our main source of income was drastically reduced due to the pandemic. Then, they told me they still expected me to work my regular hours, but to not clock in and out using our system. Just keep track of the hours myself and email them to our bookkeeper each week. They said they would pay me "once this all blows over". I was very skeptical about claiming unemployment benefits while still doing work for them, so I did some research on my own. Based on what I found, I could claim unemployment as long as I didn't work more than 4 days a week and made under $504/week. My regular hours before had been earning me more than that, so I told my boss I needed to reduce my hours to be able to claim unemployment. From March to May, I worked 3-4 days/week and should have earned ~$350/week. I sent my logged hours to my boss and bookkeeper each week. Then in mid-May, my boss told me to stop logging my new "regular" hours, and only log hours when my boss emailed me to do something. Since then, I have worked little to no hours and rarely hear from them. My employer has not paid me since we started working from home in early March, and I do not believe that I will ever get paid for the hours that I worked back then. However, I've strongly disliked my boss and the company that I work for ever since I started. It's an extremely toxic environment and is very poorly managed. I've felt that this pandemic was a blessing in disguise giving me a chance to finally get out. As things are opening up here in NYC, I have a feeling that my boss is going to ask me to start working full time again soon. But after not hearing from them for weeks and still not being paid for any of my hours over the past 6 months, I don't feel comfortable going back to work for this company. Legally, am I required to continue working for this company? [link] [comments] |
