    Entire apartment burned down: Questions

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:04 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My entire apartment complex burned down and has been deemed a "total loss". This is my first situation where I have ever had to utilize insurance. Thankfully I have a $10k rentors insurance policy.

How long does it take to receive a pay out?

Do I need to provide receipts to literally all of my items? I walked out with just my phone keys and wallet.

Thanks for the help. This situation really sucks..

My cars were totaled by a drunk driver. Now, his insurance company seems to be faking comp prices to justify their lowball offer for my vehicles.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:04 PM PDT

I own two cars that were both totalled, while parked in front of my home, by a drunk driver. His insurance company is making me offers on the cars individually, but their first offer was in the very low end of what I'd say is reasonable.

I countered by sending some comp examples that were $4000-$5000 higher than the ones he was using, but the loss agent didn't budge. He increased his offer for my loss by only $10!

To justify their seemingly low offers, they included a sheet that shows 3-4 comps in the area, and adjusts their list prices up or down to match my car's stats (for example, they may adjust a comp price down if that comp had fewer miles than my car)

Some of the comps included on their comp sheet seem to have a surprisingly low list prices. Out of curiosity I tried to look up a low-seeming comp by its VIN, but couldn't find any ad online. Next I called the dealer that had sold that comp car--and he said the car had listed for $2,700 higher than the Insurance comp sheet showed! Thats a big deal, because it makes it seem like the insurance company is just faking comp prices to offer me a low price.

Next, I began looking up the other comp cars from the offer sheet, using google cached pages to see the old ads (which are usually expired/removed otherwise). Turns out the insurance company also straight up reduced another comp price by $1000 in their favor, and didn't indicate that yet another comp had been in a crash, and thus was not a very good comp match.

Do you think confronting my loss agent's manager with these facts, and demanding a sum closer to my comps will have any impact on the situation? Or do folks just get screwed in these kinds of deals, as a fact of life?

Are all yellow trap collisions the same?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:32 AM PDT

Is a yellow trap type collision possible if the turning driver has a protected green arrow. Here in NY some intersections have a protected green left AFTER the light of oncoming drivers turns yellow-red. Im asking because i am currently going through a 3rd party claim with a driver who made a left turn before i cleared the intersection. My insurance has already decided its not my fault. But their insurance is not yet accepting liability. What im pretty much asking is can a protected left turn really absolve the other driver. My theory is that the other driver was staring at the light waiting for it to let him turn, he floored it as soon as it did without checking the intersection. The short 2-3 second yellow light explains why i was still in the intersection. I took pictures immediately after the collision without moving my car. The impact of his car is right in the middle of his bumper, and the impact on my car is in the driver side front corner. Most of my bumper was untouched otherwise. Any advice and pointers help. I know that I did not run a red light. Wether his light was green to turn could even be a lie.

**The driver was first in line to turn and was waiting in the middle of the intersection

I committed a hit and run, I feel horrible and want to be held accountable

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 06:13 PM PDT

I don't know where to turn. Should I call my insurance company? Will they help me set things right with the other party? I don't know the other party as no one was inside the car. The cops seem useless as all they want will to book me and charge me for something without actually helping me find this guy and apologize and pay for the damages (which were definitely small).

My question really is can my insurance company help me find the person or avoid criminal charges if I come clean to them? Yes I'm sure my rate and premium would go up, I'll live with it of course.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Have older roof. Heavy storm blew off a TON of shingles during recent storm. Will HO Insurance usually approve a claim even though it's older (15-18 years with visable wear) I have replacement cost and not actual cash value policy.

WI, Resources to find local/regional insurance companies?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 10:54 PM PDT

Are there any resources in Wisconsin that I can use to find more regional insurance companies? I haven't been able to find any so far. I won't be getting my own car insurance(under my dads) for a while but I am curious to see how much it would cost for me. I know of the more national ones like State Farm, Gieco, All-State, etc but I am curious to see how their quotes stack up to smaller regional companies.

How much do you say something is worth when it was given to you

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:18 PM PDT

Insurance is asking me age original price etc and there's a lot of things we were given as hand me downs but still would cost a decent amount to replace.

Car totalled, not at fault driver had no liscense and tags were bad

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 03:58 PM PDT

So basically my childs father (T) drives a car in my name but he has no liscence and the tags are bad but we DO have liability insurance.

So today I was driving behind him on a 2 lane road and in the left hand lane there was a car stopped with his turn signal on waiting to turn. The car randomly starts turning to make a U turn right in front of T without giving anytime for T to stop and they have a head on colision. My daughter (2) was in the car and I pull over and we get her out of the car because its smoking.

T has some minor injuries and doesnt want to go to the hospital my daughter seems to be okay with no noticable issues. Either way the other driver is completely at fault and we have a claim started already.

My question is will the liscence/tags affect the insurance claim even though it was irrelevant to the cause of the accident?

    Thanks ahead of time

    Car Insurance Cost 18 Male

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:53 PM PDT

So, I am planning on buying a 2009 Kia Spectra, since its a decent car in my price range, but when I went to look for insurance, I checked Geico, Allstate, and Progressive...

Geico wanted to charge me $882 PER MONTH!!! Which I find insane, last year, I only made just over $3k because I have to rely on my parents to get me to work... so I would only be able to pay for 3 months of auto insurance with a full year my my pay...

Allstate refused to even give me a quote, I tried using their online quote, and I even called them, just didn't even want to give me a quote for some reason...

And then there's Progressive, who wants to charge me $207 when I sign, and then $321 per month for the first 5 months...

Obviously the way to go would be progressive, but considering how I have no history of accidents, or tickets, I don't feel like either should be that high... But for some statistical reason men are stupid and have to be "unsafe drivers" so they pay more... Still though, $300 a month would be about 2 weeks of my pay (although when I have a car, and insurance, I can work more, so possible only one week)

Is there any way to lower the cost?

I've taken a defensive drivers course to save an extra like 5 maybe 10%... but I just feel like $300 a month, or $800 a month is INSANE when the average cost for auto insurance where I live is around $97 a month...

    Edits:

Since a bot told me to add this, the state I'm in is New York

I also feel like this is worth adding, I live in more of a suburb, rural area where not many people walk, and there aren't too many people driving around at once, I also work just before after noon rush hour traffic, and get out after 8... So theoretically I should have a lesser chance of getting into an accident just by there being less people on the road.

What Type of Auto Insurance Should I get in This Situation?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I am not sure what all goes into the rates you receive.. so I am a 23 YO w/ an excellent credit rating of approximately 765. Recently started a job making 70k. No prior accidents or anything.

I drive a 2006 Cadillac STS and it isn't worth very much. I don't think I need anything like comprehensive or collision.. but then again not sure. Basically, I don't care if my car gets totaled (I would just buy a new one).

That being said, what do you recommend to get? I heard USAA was the best to go to..

What does 'sacrifice' mean in Institute Cargo Clauses?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Sorry if this is not the right subreddit to post. In Institute Cargo Clauses B, according to paragraph 1, the insurance covers the loss or damage to the subject matter insured caused by general average sacrifice. What does sacrifice means in this context? Can anyone give me a simple example? Thanks in advance.

If a person on your car insurance gets in an accident and rates go up, can they be normalized by removing the person from the policy?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT

For example if a child gets in a wreck, and the prices of the child go up, will they go back down if you remove the child, considering that it was the child's fault of the wreck?

    Question about possible mechanical vandalism.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 09:14 AM PDT

I have full coverage on my current car.

I had brakes going to the floor and brought it to a repair shop. The guy tells me that someone put oil in my master cylinder because my brake fluid is hella contaminated.

I have an extended warranty on the car. It went into effect in May since my manufacture warranty expired in April.

I got my car towed to the dealership so I could make use of that warranty.

The dealership guy told me that if it was a man made error with my fluid that the warranty may not cover the issue. Was asked about recent repairs and I've only really had the oil changed recently. Right before my warranty ran out I had some work done at the dealership. And that's mostly it.

If my extended warranty gives me the shaft and doesn't wanna pay, is this something I can make a claim on my car insurance for?

    Ho6 condo policy

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 05:45 PM PDT

I'm worried about my condo in Biloxi Mississippi because I didn't not purchase flood insurance because my insurance advisor said I probably do not need it. Hurricane season is coming up and I'm wondering if there is any way about getting around as it may be to late to add it and I'm worried something may happen to my floors because of all the rain.

Need help with figuring out what Health insurance to get.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 05:39 PM PDT

    Located in USA, North Carolina.

I've never had health insurance and figured I need to get some soon because of blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart issues I've recently learned I have. I also have infertility issues and my main concern is finding a good insurance company that will potentially cover a uterine surgery and IVF in the future. There's so many companies and I have no idea what to even look for.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Health Insurance: Do I as an almost 26-year-old student, unemployed and living with parents qualify for Medicaid?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 04:51 PM PDT

For context, I am a Pennsylvania resident. I had a few questions about this:

If I am living with my parents and they do NOT claim me as a dependent, I would apply as a household of one, correct? I would not include any information about my parents?

What if my situation is fluid? If I start a job in the near future while my application is being processed or after I'm approved, how does that affect my Medicaid status?

If my current insurance plan ends next month, does the penalty apply before my application is approved or before I submit the application? In other words, if the approval process takes a month or two, would I be vulnerable to the penalty during that time?

Would my parents somehow be penalized at any time if I'm not claimed as a dependent?

Thanks in advance for your input.

What is the cheapest auto insurance for modified cars in Canada?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 02:28 PM PDT

It's legal to modify your car in Canada but you have to disclose all your mods to the insurance which tends to make the cost go up. Does anybody know the best car insurance for modifications?

    Good neighbor car partner

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:53 PM PDT

I am beyond frustrated. A deer hit our car on May 20th and I went back and forth with Allstate for about 3 weeks because they said the car was totaled, but the valuation was way off. Ended up boosting the value 2800 and suddenly they didnt want to total my car. Repairs then took about three more weeks. This is supposedly a "good neighbor" recommended shop by Allstate. The first time we went to get our car, the damages hadnt been fully fixed on the side door. They took another week and a half to fix that correctly. When we went to get it that time, the battery was dead, then after they jumped it, I found that the AC (they had to pull it out? To vaccum glass out) wasnt working. They said they outsource the AC stuff so they would have their guy look at it the next week. We leave, then not five minutes later they tell us to come back because they found it just needed a fuse. We picked it up and for the five minute drive home, the AC worked. It has been two weeks since then and we have barely driven the car because of staying home more and the fact that the battery dies after each use now. Today we HAD to get our emissions done so we decided to try and get the battery problem fixed, but when we put in a new battery, we discovered the AC wasnt working again. I know the shop says they gauranteed their work, but I dont know if they even know what they are doing. I ended up driving over 105 miles in the GA just trying to get the computer to reset and it wouldnt work, so I dont know of they have messed up something on that too?

Anyways, what are my options at this point? Do I have to take it back to the place that has never fixed it correctly? Will Allstate help at all in this since its technically still broken from our claim?? Thanks!!

Parents avoiding to pay for auto insurance, but I already inherited a vehicle. What are the steps I need to get the cheapest standalone liability insurance? I am 18.

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 01:41 PM PDT

I am willing to pay for this on my own since I do have a job and almost living on my own. What are the cheapest options?

Haven’t had auto insurance since march. Penalty when I resume?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 12:27 PM PDT

I stopped auto insurance when I stopped needing a car around March, so almost 6 months ago.

I have to go update register my car this year ima few months, at which time I intend to get insurance before I go otherwise they won't let me register presumably.

Thus, I'm wondering how long I can go without insurance such that when I do get insurance they don't add a penalty bonus cost. I imagine they will add that to recoup their losses for the months I didn't have insurance, and possibly more. Perhaps it's too late?

I had root insurance and will continue to use them even though their prices are higher now. They gave me a quote and it seems I can purchase it but idk how long it'll last.

    Thanks!

    Upgrade or nah?

    Posted: 22 Aug 2020 11:30 AM PDT

I'm about a year out from having major jaw reconstructive surgery. Currently we have a high deductible plan with UHC and open enrollment will be coming up in November. My initial instinct is to upgrade to a policy for a lower out-of-pocket bill come surgery time but I'm concerned they might not approve it if the process was started prior to upgrading my plan. Anyone familiar enough with how insurance operates to know if this is a valid concern or not?
