With looming Tiktok deal estimated at $50B, MSFT gains 4% or $64B in value

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:21 AM PDT

Markets seem to really love this move and if the Tiktok deal goes through it's almost like a "free" purchase for MSFT with their stock gains.

According to Forbes Tiktok is estimated to be worth about $50B right now: https://www.forbes.com/sites/elanagross/2020/07/29/a-reported-takeover-bid-values-tiktok-at-50-billion

MSFT is also sitting on about $140B in cash at the moment too so an all-cash deal is also possible.

Imagine buying a $10 burger and getting $12 back on it.

In tandem with the underrated stock thread, post your biggest risk stocks

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:15 PM PDT

I'm talking about those big risk big reward boys

I'm talking the stocks your friends think you're crazy for investing in

I'm talking about the penny stocks you're buying an insane amount of to get rich when they blow up

My bid is PLNHF. Not because I know anything about them, but because my coworker is CONVINCED that they will be the largest marijuana distributor in the US. So we are both dumping money into it to try and get rich when (not if, WHEN) it blows up.

    What are yours?

Fed TLT buys Tues-Thurs guarantee a 50-125% return on options

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:52 PM PDT

The Fed is pumping TLT tomorrow and Thursday again by several billion dollars.

Tomorrow at 10:30am - the Fed is buying 1.75 billion in long bonds tomorrow and will raise TLT by at least 0.5-1.0 (10k contracts of /zb)

Wednesday at 10:30am - the Fed is buying 6 billion in 5yr and 7yr notes. TLT will get a reciprocal pump

Thursday at 10:30am - the Fed is buying additionally 1.25 billion in long bonds and 500 million in 10 year notes. This buy will again raise TLT by 0.5-1.0

OPTION PLAY - Purchase TLT 170c 8/7 before this happens

IV is only 15% and there is virtually no skew which equals a huge increase for each dollar change in price. I made 30% increase on my orders opened today when TLT gained on only $0.60, image below.

    Terrible 401k options

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:35 PM PDT

35 m, and have a 401k with no match and our offering is through Principal. We have terrible fund options and the fees are very high (most close to 1%). For this reason I have not been maxing out my 401k but I'd like to see if this is foolish.

I max out my Roth IRA every year, but should one max out a 401k even if I have terrible fund options?

Should I sell or hold UAL and NCLH?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:19 PM PDT

So I bought UAL n NCLH at 40 and 20 respectively for $400 each, and currently they are at 31 and 13. I've read reports of them not starting anytime soon so I am willing for it to be a long term investment. However, now that the chances of bankruptcy are higher, I'm unsure whether I am to sell or continue holding. I know people panic sell and that's bad but now that the financials for UAL n NCLH r that bad and UAL needs the government to bail them out, is it really panic or a justified sell? I will be at a loss of $100 each.

I have bought shares of Delta and Boeing but I'm not concerned about them, more so of UAL n NCLH. Seek your advice. Thanks!

I am currently writing my master thesis in Finance and thinking about including the fear and greed index in combination with a trading rule. Unfortunately I can not find any data, besides graphs.

Does anybody know where I can get historical (CSV/Excel) values for CNN's Fear and Greed index.

What happens to average investors when our economy of growth comes to a possible end?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:30 AM PDT

    Basically the question above.

I suppose a lot of people on this board are just general Index fond investors, and I was wondering about this a while ago. The current economy is heavily based on the promise of growth, may it be through productivity increase, more resources, new markets etc.

So, I believe very strongly that the current economical situation will recover, even if it takes 10 years. I recently read "This time it's different", and I don't see an indication why it should be.

However, I'm wondering what will happen if our growth based economy just can't grow anymore. It's obvious that we have limited resources on this planet, even if we're not even close to using it completely though. But there are boundaries (Also due to climate impacts etc. What happens if we hit these boundaries? How will the economy continue, and what will investing look like?

Hi there, From an aggressive risk takers perspective which one is easier to execute and profit: picking and holding a few stocks (maybe less than 5) or timing a diversified basket of stocks (e.g. index trend investing). Kindly share experiences. Thank you.

The logic of dividends and stock prices

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:41 AM PDT

I've watched Ben Felix's videos and read his blog posts on dividends. I feel the general points he's trying to get across is that dividends have no real benefit over capital growth and people place too much importance on them, largely for psychological reasons.

It's often stated online that when a company pays a dividend, it's share price must drop accordingly by the same amount.

What I don't understand about this is: if outstanding shares are owned by shareholders (not the company), why does the company paying a dividend have to affect the share price? I can't seem to wrap my head around this.

Can someone ELI5 why this works and exactly how dividend payouts affect share price/capital growth of a company?

US Manufacturing PMI (ISM) rises to 54.2, beating consensus expectations for 53.6

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:34 AM PDT

Today's release seems like a spot of good news following the disappointment of last week's economic news, where durable/capital goods orders and jobless claims both missed their consensus expectations. I break down the US Manufacturing PMI with charts and analysis here (if you're interested in reading more - I recommend it).

Here's what I would say are the three key takeaways from today's manufacturing report for July:

    • New orders rose to 61.5 and was led by wood products, furniture and primary metals
    • Production similarly rose to 62.1 and was led by primary metals, wood products and textile mills
    • Employment rose to 44.3, but remained under 50, so employment is still trending down and has yet to return to growth (this is consistent with the elevated initial jobless claims numbers and stubbornly high continuing jobless claims)

Please leave your comments below and make what you will from the above for your investing decisions!

7-11 (ADR): Difference between SVNDY vs SVNDY?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:58 PM PDT

I think one is an ADR, and one is an ADR of the stock on the Tokyo exchange, but I just don't get the differences between them, and I can't find much from looking online. If one is the ADR of the Tokyo exchange, then the other is an ADR of presumably some other exchange? I don't think either trade on USA markets directly.

Help me with picking digital health / telemedicine companies.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:13 AM PDT

What are your favorite digital health companies?
I'm closely following DXCM, ABT and TNDM, as I see them as the leaders (from tech point of view) on their respective field of glucose monitoring and insulin delivery. This is a field that I understand quite well, as I have diabetes myself.
I believe that telemedicine is on the rise, and the current virus outbreak may accelerate companies that build health devices and services around their device. Can you recommend similar companies that have a good product or a service, that are worth following, if I believe that telemedicine market is going to get bigger in the next couple of years?
For example, one can think of remote diagnostics (portable EKG, ultrasound,or companies working on tricorder devices ) with a service that connects the patient with the doctor, without having to visit the doctor.

Starting to add dividend stocks in my portfolio - Is it worth it?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:28 PM PDT

Hey guys, boring investor here.I currently have QQQ, IWF, and THNQ. So far, so good!

I wanted to stretch my passive interest in some ways through dividend ETF stocks.I'm planning to reinvest the gains over time or turn the dividends into cash for my portfolio.I will start to allocate 10% of my portfolio in one dividend ETF, is it worth it for that ratio?

Any recommendations for a high dividend ETF that I might be interested to start with?

Where to park 100K looking for Real Estate

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:48 PM PDT

Maxed out 401K (TSP) - Maxed out ROTH IRA & ~$50k in investments

I have liquidated $100K for a 20% down payment that I pulled from Stocks for a down payment. Right now, all I am noticing downward housing market long term. I am using a Broker Associate to help me find a triplex or fourplex. The housing market is a sellers market and my concern is waiting and allowing inflation to hit my $100K over the course of 1 year, or to buy something below its cost and be upside-down. What are the best actions I can take in these times?

Additional Notes: looking for 350k-550k price range, estimated interest 4.25% for income property which requires 20% down. I currently rent and will not buy where I live (bad location) because I hope to job transfer to the Springs in the next few months to a year

    Someone enlighten me on Peloton

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 03:00 PM PDT

How is this stock any good? I just passed by a brand new physical store yesterday and they have like 3-4 staff in an empty shop (worst time to open?) They have a prime location and rent will not be that cheap despite the virus. If all their offerings are online why don't they stay online especially in this new world order...? Physical stores will definitely diminish ROE.

Secondly, for those of you that workout, how is this any different than AthleanX? He offers free videos on youtube and his subscription is lifetime. Yeah I mean it's not live training with a personal trainer, but anyone with some level of experience can piece together their own workout using AthleanX exercises on youtube. And there are plenty of people like AthleanX + other equipment incumbents like LifeFitness or TechnoGym that could copy Peloton's model.

I just don't see how this company is worth anything. Then again, some nobody said a good company doesn't mean a good stock.

EDIT: Also, I don't believe Peloton would be successful expanding into Asia because the size of homes is just too small to fit a bike machine. So lots of negative points to think about overall.

    Is the Dragon Portfolio overpowered?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:05 AM PDT

For those that have read about dragon portfolio, what are some critics you have of it? Besides the long volatility component not being readily available for retail investors.

This is my second time reading it, and I still have yet to find any critical flaw or weakness of the portfolio. It just seems flawless. Is there something detrimental to it thats not mentioned?
