Posted: 18 Aug 2020 04:15 PM PDT The title says it all. For the past 5-7 years I've had the same car insurance company, it's not a major company, just one of those cheap ones that meet the legal requirement of insurance (I live in CA, btw). Over the years, I've noticed the name of the company changes frequently (like, two or three times a year) but I'd never given it much thought, though I had definitely picked up that my company isn't the best/most reputable. Still, as a late teen/struggling college student I just dealt with it and prayed I'd never have to use it. As a result of my current situation though, I've come to learn that my insurance company - and all it's prior names - have done to others what is happening to me, and I'm wondering if that's why they change their name so often (bad reviews); but I digress. Prior to COVID, I moved out of my parents place but kept getting my mail to that address. Recently received letters from the DMV and my bank that stated that as a result of not having insurance since May, I cannot register my vehicle and I have a fine. No prior mail warning of this, and nothing from my insurance saying my coverage had lapsed or anything - or who knows, COVID mail delays are real, perhaps I just never received them for whatever reason, but definitely no notice from my insurance. Regardless, I have bank account statements and confirmation texts that prove I've been paying, but my insurance company has yet to respond to my emails and I'm getting nervous that the money I've paid since May is lost forever and I have no coverage to show for it, so I'm basically SOL and now paying more money than I should have to. When I tried calling my insurance at the start of the month, the reps kept repeating that their system said I'd been inactive since May (I pay each month through an automated voice system, I never typically interact with the reps). I had noticed the the amount the voice would tell me to pay was lower than what I'd expected but I paid it nevertheless, and I noticed when going over my bank statements from July that I'd actually been given a refund on my car insurance that I paid at the start of the month, but I have no idea why. Prior to this revelation, I had randomly gotten a check from my insurance for over payment, but it was only for only some of what I paid and I thought nothing else of it. So I get the sense that their accounting department is a little skewed at the moment, but it should not fall on me if I've been undercharged or anything. Is there anything I can do? Also, they charge an additional fee no matter how you pay, which I recently learned is illegal in my state. Could someone explain this a little more for me, and also advise me on what to do if my insurance company continues to ignore me? How can I at least get the extra charges from my bank removed? Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Who is at fault? Car fender bender Posted: 18 Aug 2020 10:28 PM PDT Hey guys. Just had an incident while driving, minor damage but will need to be repaired. Me and friends can't decide who is at fault, I believe that both parties are most likely responsible for their own vehicles. Luckily I have a dashcam. I was slowing down to confirm the address of the driveway I was pulling into, then wanted to go in on an angle to avoid scrapping my bumper. They came in from my back right off the main round on the right side. No police report for auto accident, is this a problem? (PA) Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:47 PM PDT Got into an accident in PA, not at fault. I called the police, they showed up, I asked for a report and the officer said it'd be available electronically in a couple days and that the insurance companies could access it then. After calling the local precinct, looks like nothing was filed. Not surprised for Philly honestly. I went through the at-fault's insurance and they admitted liability for the accident the day after I gave a recorded statement and I got paid a portion of my expenses. Now I'm seeking medical, missed work, and pain/suffering. The at-fault's insurance already paid out my immediate expenses. Now I'm going after the rest in small claims as the offers I've gotten so far have been absurdly low. Does anyone know if the lack of police report will be an issue here? They already admitted fault, I have pictures, made a recorded statement to them, they paid me nearly $10k so far without a release. [link] [comments] |
Friend is in critical care after being run over, doesn’t have insurance. Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:33 PM PDT A friend was run over by a vehicle and is now in the hospital in critical condition. It's been very touch and go, but we are hopeful he will pull through and things are looking better every day. The problem is the vehicle left the scene, and at this point there hasn't been any leads in locating the vehicle. The second problem is he has zero health insurance. And he lost his job not long before the accident. He is probably racking up huge bills right now. And I know he will need a lot of care after if he does get out. Is there anything we can do? Some sort of insurance we can get him enrolled in? His parents both have passed and he isn't close to his only sibling, so we are trying to figure things out on his behalf. Edit: We are in NY [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2020 12:21 AM PDT So I was in a weird accident, but the details don't really matter (basically no one is officially considered at fault by police bc it was on private property & no witnesses) but I'm going through the insurance process and they need me to notarized docs saying that I wasn't drinking, texting, etc. Welllll that's all good but when I talk to the local notary they say they need two forms of signature ID. I only have one (my license obviously). I don't have a credit card as I'm right out of college & didn't get around to it. I don't have a passport because I've never had enough money for those kinds of vacations. What should I do? I have other forms of ID but just not another with my signature and I'm not sure what other IDs I can get fast that would have my signature. And I need to mail these papers back to the insurance! (Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, I honestly had no idea where to go for this, but if anyone has any suggestions, pleaaase share!) [link] [comments] |
[AL] Asbestos, Hotels, I'm freakin out, man Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:03 AM PDT I awoke recently to find my hot water heater bubbling water all over my kitchen. Immediately turned it off and called insurance. They had someone from remediation out that day. The house is built in '58 and I just bought it in Nov (first house). After determining that the water had stayed mostly in the kitchen (it drained into my crawlspace via a floor duct) the remediation guys pulled up a small section of floor. They saw a dark-layer and thought it might be asbestos, so they took a sample for testing, sealed the area, and left. They tell me I'm at least going to need cabinetry and flooring, so I move everything out of my cabinets to another room so they are empty. 3 days later, sample comes back negative for asbestos, and they come back to continue demolition. They spend about 20 minutes with a skillssaw cutting around the perimeter of my cabinetry, and then make a couple big cuts to section off the floor into big chunks. I'm hanging out watching, because there's a layer of cool, old vinyl somewhere in the sandwich of flooring. They get done cutting, and pry over a large chunk of floor. Immediately, they see brownish, clayish tiles under the layer that they tested. The tiles are 9 x 9. They did not test these tiles The guys go get their respirator/masks and tell me this is probably asbestos and I should evacuate. I call a little reptile, and they immediately put me in a nice hotel. I'm cool. Sample comes back positive for asbestos, I may get moved to a house rental since this is going to take awhile. So far, I'm totally happy with my insurance. What I understand is, they need a specialty company to come in and remove the asbestos and finish the remediation process, then there will be an estimate of the repair cost and I find someone to do it. Sounds good so far. My concerns, though, are.... -The guys were sawing for awhile and there was sawdust everywhere. My ac was running, all my kitchen stuff I removed from the cabinets, all my bedding, basically my whole house now has a layer of sawdust and asbestos on it. It's not a big house (1,600 sq ft). I have a 6 year old. How on earth do I get everything cleaned and safe? Is there some way to clean my stuff? I don't want to have to get rid of all my stuff, but I don't want it covered in asbestos either. IDK what to do. -So far, I've been saving receipts for food. But I've never owned a home or had an insurance claim for anything like this. What do I need to know that I'm not doing? I just want to know that when all this is over, my home is safe to live in and I don't know how to ensure that. -Since the flooding damage is in the kitchen, but the asbestos might be everywhere in the house...are they going to tear up all my floors until there is no asbestos anymore? Or just stop where the water damage ends? BC I grabbed some clothes and dog food and left, the workers made it seem like it would be very unwise to spend one more second in that house without a mask on than necessary so ....what happens to everything in my house? It's all just kind of...there and I don't really want to go back in there. What about my ac that has been running and by now has asbestos throughout it? -The more I think about this the more worried I get. At the end of the day, all I want is to know that my house is safe to live in again for me and my family. And I don't know what I should be doing. I've been googling about asbestos remediation and trying to learn some about it. But this is all the very first time for any of this for me. On top of that, kid had their appendix out 3 weeks ago. Online school started this week. I'm freaking out, man. Thank you to anyone with time to read my long-winded tale of woe and knowledge to share about my situation. [link] [comments] |
Motorcycle stolen from towing lot, who is liable? Posted: 18 Aug 2020 11:12 PM PDT Not going to go into extreme detail on the situation because it's still ongoing and I have an attorney, but it's complicated and I'm scared so I am just asking the magic 8 ball that is reddit for thwir take. Long story short My insurance lapsed on my motorcycle (I wasnt aware, thought it was bundled, but I digress). I found this out because I was ran over by a delivery truck driver who wasnt paying attention. (Im 0% at fault) . My bike was crushed but still repairable. At the advice of the delivery truck managers, I had the vehicle towed to a lot so their adjuster could come by and do his thing. After about 2 weeks, I hadn't heard from anyone and it struck me as odd. I decided to make a trip to the towing company lot to get some pictures of the bike before the repair. Bike wasn't there. The lady at the lot said someone broke in and stole my bike about a week ago. They waited 4 days to repoet it as stolen and no one contacted me, my attorney, nor the delivery company's adjuster. I went to the lolice station to get a copy of the police report, found out they didn't even list me as a victim... they listed the towing lot. I spoke to my attorney who advised me to get added onto the incident report, so I did. That was a week ago. Everyone is fighting over who is responsible. My insurance lapsed otherwise I'd of just had my own knsirance cover it and let them fight for it via subrogation. My understanding is that the towing company itself is 100% liable for the theft since the bike was in their possession so to my understanding, thsir insurance should cover it. But again, everyone's fighting. How does all this work? Is the towing company liable for the loss? Do I need to file a claim with their insurance or do they do that? [link] [comments] |
Tree fell on garage, total loss Posted: 18 Aug 2020 02:25 PM PDT Last week my city got the worst of a massive storm. My neighbors tree fell on my garage destroying it. My adjuster came out and agreed it's a total loss but can't complete the inspection because it's unsafe to enter and told me to just send him the the measurements. Where I'm at a loss is the stuff in my garage. I have a homemade jet boat I've been building for about 4 years now that I'm clueless as to a value. I also have a larger amount of tools and other items. I know some are salvageable but it's too dangerous to go in there and when the trees removed there's a chance that the garage will come down completely. How do I go about this? Nothing like this has ever happened to me and I'm clueless. I'll try to respond to any questions when I can, I'm still without power and my cell service is spotty [link] [comments] |
If my GF From Mexico comes to the US and drives my car, will my insurance cover her and is it legal? Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:56 PM PDT Title pretty much says it all. my GF is Mexican. lives in Mexico has a Mexican drivers license. Is coming to visit me in Texas. I obviously have car insurance. If we were to drive to a national park could we legally switch off while driving? and would my car still be covered by insurance while she drove it? or would she need to have American car insurance for any of that to happen? Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:36 PM PDT Hello, I recently moved out of state and my old insurer tried to charge a LOT more than what i was paying in my home state. Naturally i got a new insurer and got a state minimum policy with a premium of $525.00 per 6 months ($117 DP followed by 5 withdraws of $84), a while later i got a notice in the mail that my policy was enabled but due to credit reasons or driving history?? my new premium was set at $695, I thought all was fine I just had a new slightly more expensive monthly payment of ~$140 (they didnt notify me of my new monthly amount due) until I started doing the math for myself. As of now I have paid the company ~$180 ($117 DP and a $63 past due balance which was before my first months pay cycle) and am scheduled to have another ~$192 (no idea where this number came from) taken out of my account tomorrow totaling around ~$372, therefore my payment per month for the rest of the policy (4 more pay cycles after tomorrow) should be $90-$95 ($323/4 Pay Cycles + $1 ATP + $11 Policy Fee), are they doing this to keep my monthly payments relatively close to the same from here on out or am i missing something??? Insurance Benefits offered from work Posted: 18 Aug 2020 09:33 PM PDT So I work retail and I get offered a wide variety of insurance plans to choose from (dental, health, vision, etc). I happened to choose vision insurance from Aetna, my coverage doesn't start till the end of this month and I plan on leaving this job after as I am offered a better position elsewhere. I've been paying for my insurance for a while now and was wondering to see if I could just utilize my benefits and get a new pair of glasses before I quit my job. Would that cause an issue in the future? Will I have to end up paying for the insurance even after I quit? Edit: I live in Alabama! [link] [comments] |
Fender bender, not at fault, other party wants to pay out of pocket. UPDATE Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:58 PM PDT Hello, all I defiantly need some more guidance in this. About 2 weeks ago I had a minorish fender bender resulting in my car being scraped all down one side with a few large dents. At the scene of the accident, I got the insurance info of the driver and all seemed fine and well. However later that day they called me explaining that since the driver was there daughter and their rates would skyrocket if they went through insurance they'd be much happier to pay out of pocket. I went ahead and got a few quotes and sent them over to them. Both quotes were around about $1500. Today I got a call from the dad, the gist of what he said is basically $1500 is too much for such an old car (1994 Taurus) he has a buddy that he thinks could do it for less (parts only no labor), he also said that he'd be happy to just give me $500 dollars to forget about it all. Here are my questions,
My parents would like me to go the out of pocket route since I'm also a kid and they'd want to do the same in this situation. I don't want to be a jerk but the accident was 100% not my fault, I really don't think I should have to pay anything or lose anything. I realize my car is on the beater side so I don't expect a lot. I'm in MD FYI Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can I File Claim Against Neighbors Renters Ins. for Harassment? Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:33 PM PDT My neighbor has dementia and has been intentionally harassing my pregnant wife. She has filed a false police report against us and stomps throughout all hours of the night as well as other things. This has resulted in my wife bruising her teeth due to the anxiety the neighbor has inflicted. Would we be able to file a BI claim against this neighbors renters policy? I am thinking no because the neighbors acts have been intentional however I would appreciate any insight. We have medical records indicating that the bruised tooth was a result of this ladies harassment. Thanks. State: AZ [link] [comments] |
Dentist failed to bill insurance properly and is billing me instead Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:03 AM PDT I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this or not, but I'm at a complete loss right now. eta: I'm in Illinois, USA, and my insurer is located in Missouri. The dental office is in Illinois. Several years ago, one of my children had a procedure at a dental office. We paid ~$400 upfront because the receptionist told us that part of the procedure wasn't covered (sedation) and to cover our portion of costs as well as our deductible. I then provided them with copies of our insurance cards (two insurers) and my information. Of note: The primary insurer had pre-authorized the procedure. The secondary insurance had not, but we really weren't expecting much coverage from them other than for perhaps the sedation. They were mostly medical with some minor dental coverage. A full year later, I received a bill for them for $2,500. It stated that the insurance company (one) had denied the entire procedure and I owed the full amount of the bill. I immediately called the dental office to find out what had happened since the procedure should have been covered almost entirely. The person in the billing department told me that the insurer had apparently requested some additional records that the office had failed to provide. She'd look into it and make sure they got what they needed to pay the bill. Cool. I promptly dismissed it from my mind. I'm busy, I work full-time, I have three kids in school, I have a partner who works full-time and a busy volunteer schedule. I really didn't have a lot of mental resources to dump into this situation, which I really did believe was resolved. It wasn't. A month ago, I got another bill, same dentist, same amount, same insurance "denial." I was shocked. I contacted the dentist again. Got someone in the billing department who claimed my insurer had denied the claim outright and the bill was entirely my responsibility. I told her that they needed to file it again with the records. She insisted this wasn't the case and hung up on me. My partner contacted the insurance company to get some background info, and this is when we got a fuller picture. According to the insurer, the dental office was supposed to send X-rays and surgery notes. They didn't. The insurer requested them, and the office never sent them. The office had a full year to file, and they didn't. Essentially, the clock ran out, and that's when the office billed me. When my husband called, the insurance company agreed to "restart" the clock. I'm not sure if this is typical or not, but we greatly appreciated it. The patient responsibility (our part of the bill) should have been less than $100, when everything shook out in the end. But yesterday, we got ANOTHER bill along with threats to send the bill to a collection agency. So here's where I am. This is a large bill for my family. Even if it wasn't, I am incensed that this office basically jacked around for years with this bill, failing to do even the least bit of work to file it properly, and now they're coming back on me. I don't want my credit ruined over it -- but I also really can't afford to pay a bill I shouldn't owe in the first place. Do I have any options here? Would an attorney help? Is my credit going to be borked? I'm so frustrated and angry and, quite honestly, outraged at the whole mess. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Aug 2020 08:17 PM PDT I'm sorry to ask for this but I don't have parents I can ask and my husband and I are both confused. I have a home owners policy. My house is still on loan. I made a claim due to a leaking roof after a storm. It was checked out and they said it's very hail damaged and needs replaced. Then without telling me anything else they send me a check for "Actual cash value" and a letter that says if we report the job done they give us another payment. But we have a 4k deductible. I DO NOT have 4k sitting around. I got an estimate and then my adjuster said I just have to give a contractor my itemized list? 😕 Please someone explain like I'm five lol I'm in Nebraska. Homeowners Increase With Claim? Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:16 PM PDT NJ. What are the chances my homeowners increases after making a claim for a refrigerator that died during a recent power outage? Two weather related insurance claims in a year Posted: 18 Aug 2020 07:17 PM PDT IA - For some reason I've been gifted with two major storms this year that caused some damage at my house. First was a hail storm that caused around 4k of damage which I did a claim for. Now this second storm was a wind storm that appears to have caused around 3.5 - 4k of damage. Question is, with these being weather related events, will I have a hard time finding good insurance from other companies if I shop around in a year or two? I was told by my insurance agent that they won't raise my rates or drop me directly because of a claim (which I think is the law). Just curious if this will effect me down the road. Thanks! Moving car after buying insurance (Michigan, USA) Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:42 PM PDT Hey, I jointly own a pickup truck with a friend, and I have nowhere to store it for the long term, so it stays at his place. When I tried to buy insurance, they said since that it was at his place, he should be the one who buys the insurance. However, he cannot buy it, as for some reason his parents insist that if he pays for insurance on one car he should pay for it for all of their cars (lmao). Is it possible to just move the truck to outside of my place for a week, buy the insurance, and move it back? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 18 Aug 2020 06:16 PM PDT I know this might seem dumb. But I'm studying for my exam the third time. I am taking the live courses tomorrow and Thursday. Of course I will take notes, but is there certain things that I should put on flash cards? Like the difference between HO types or what is list for coverage and what is not. Anything will help. I know certain thing apply to my state. Which I also can't directly find on exam fx. [link] [comments] |
Reporting minor rear-end hit and run? Posted: 18 Aug 2020 05:45 PM PDT Today at a red light my wife and I were rear-ended. We (slowly) stopped an the intersection and second later we were hit. It was a minor bump so I did not get out (middle of an expressway), just gestured the guy behind us to pull over after the intersection, he nodded in agreement. We did stop, he did not, and that was the last we saw him. I have only front facing dashcam and I did not get the guy's licence plate assuming he will pull over with us. There is no big damage to our car only some scratch and his license plate bolts pressed on our (plastic) bumper. I feel fine, so does my wife. We recently moved to the US (California) and are rather clueless on what should we do in this situation. Should we contact our insurer and file a claim? [link] [comments] |
