    Big4 focus on D&I

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:40 PM PDT

Anyone else feel like there is too much focus on statistics and metrics that they can present rather than common sense? It's taken on a whole new level recently at the Big4.

I'm of Mexican descent and suddenly I'm being referred to as a "latinx" metric, it's so dehumanizing, makes me feel like my ethnicity is more important than my work.

Was in a presentation where a Big4 firm presented their "D&I" statistics. The overall percentages by ethnicity almost exactly mirrored the US as a whole, which is what you would expect.

They then went on to spend 20 minutes explaining why this was not good enough and they were aiming to increase black representation to 35% of overall workforce, in order to be the "top-rated diverse firm" in the country.

The stated plan to achieve this is to change entry requirements for "diversity hires" (their words not mine) and to make "targeted interventions" in promotion decisions and decisions on who leads high profile clients.

Maybe I'm way out of line with popular opinion, I don't know, but it all seems so artificial to me. So many buzz words and metrics with bits of pseudo-science thrown in instead of anything that genuinely makes sense when you step back and think of it.

Anyone else participated in any similar presentation recently?

Audit or tax and raising a family

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:52 PM PDT

I'm 30 years old and will be graduating in spring next year. This is my second degree so that's why I'm graduating later than most students.

I got a tax internship at a national firm that will start after graduation. My first option was audit because I heard that you have more job opportunities in that area but now I'm not sure about it. I would like to get pregnant in the near future and it seems that working in the tax area would make it easier to have a family as you don't have to travel that much. In addition, my first language is not English and I've heard that in audit you need to communicate with clients very often and that is not my strength. If it's possible I would like to work from home part-time, are tax or audit jobs more flexible in that regard?

Last year it took me so much time and effort to prepare for fall recruiting so I'm not sure if I should do it again this year to try to find an audit internship. My other option would be to just do the tax internship I already have.

Thank you for your answers. I'm also considering industry jobs too. I wanted to start in public because I heard that you get better job opportunities after staying with them for a few years. I will not try to get pregnant right after I start working but maybe after a year and then I would decide if I want to stay or find a job in industry.

How about working for a small cpa firm that does taxes, do they usually demand as much time as big firms?

    CFE Day 1 SWOT Analysis

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:36 PM PDT

Is anyone else confused by the level of detail Densmore tells you to go into for SWOT versus what CPA provides in their solution?

I'm not sure if I should be going into each point and explaining the impact of the SWOT like Densmore does, or just stating it like CPA does.

Is anyone a CPA marker that can offer insight onto what CPA expects/wants to see?

    Thanks!

Off the rack suits for Short guys

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:20 PM PDT

Hey, any short guys (around 5'5 to 5'7) here that have had any luck with off the rack suits and from which retailers? I'm looking to buy a suit for work but want to avoid anything too expensive as I won't be wearing them that often. I'm looking for something that looks professional with acceptable quality. Which size fits you the best off the rack? Which retailers do you recommend? I do plan on visiting a tailor to get it altered for a better fit. Thanks.

Current Big4 Senior at EY. Is it ill-advised to directly message recruiters of other Big 4? Looking to make a lateral move.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:57 PM PDT

Can you believe CPA is asking for "volunteers" to help administer the 2020 CFE Exam. Who in there right mind would volunteer to be at risk to get covid for FREE?

    Hilarious imo

What is the state of the Accounting Industry in the Covid era?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:55 PM PDT

I'm currently working in industry. I've had a few people in my department laid off, I'm now filling in parts of their roles. Honestly I'm kind of looking to exit of out of my position and look for a better position elsewhere right now. How bad is it in the other sector of the accounting world.

Why do people post on Linkedin that they attended virtual networking events?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:32 PM PDT

It's honestly so cringe to see these "Attended my virtual event for PwC/KPMG/Deloitte/EY today. Super eye opening experience. Tags every recruiter and staff they talked to"

I understand recruiters encourage people to post these because it's free marketing for the firm but have some self-respect. don't jerk off to a firm that hasn't even hired you yet. it's so cringe because we all know these posts are just a desperate attempt to get on the firm's good side. just send a thank you email like a normal person.

Interview Question Help: Describe an example of when you demonstrated independent judgment and initiative in determining how to conduct an audit or advisory assignment.

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:50 PM PDT

I am totally drawing a blank on this. I am in a niche section of audit but mostly do compliance and jerk off staff work. I'm not sure how to describe anything I've done to answer this question that sounds decent at all. Whats a scenario that would sound decent?

It's also a written interview question, so that's.... interesting

    Indirect tax interview

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:30 PM PDT

Hello, everyone. I'm having an interview on indirect tax with a big four accounting firm in order to get a job as indirect tax staff. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what might they ask me regarding indirect tax and any recent news on the topic. I am from Mexico but I was told that they have many international clients so I am guessing I have to know about international stuff. Hope someone can help me and thank you.
