Make your recruiter earn their commission

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 05:57 PM PDT

We give recruiters a lot of shit on the sub, so here's some food for thought on the subject. I'm an accounting manager in a contract position that recently turned full time. Part of my responsibility includes approving division expenses, pretty typical. A few weeks ago a new invoice drops into my queue and it's from my temp company, the invoice is for me. Naturally I did a little bit of back of the envelope math and that's where I learned fun fact #1, my pay rate from the contractor was about 40% of my bill rate. So when a recruiter is pushing you to contract work, now you know why - and if you're in a situation where you have to go contract, know your value.

So I kicked some ass, took some names, the company I'm contracting to extends me a full time offer. There was an issue with part of the offer letter; so I had to send it back for amendment. The corrected offer letter comes back from a different email chain though. Fun fact #2, the recruiting agency that was already taking 60% out of every dollar they billed for me was getting a 25% commission on my full time offer - and that had been negotiated down from an initial ask of 50%.

So don't accept it when that recruiter tells you they're too busy to get back to you. Fight if an offer comes back below expectations. Because I promise you that my recruiter did not earn 60% on my work as a contractor, did not put in the hours or sweat to justify 25% on my full time offer. So if you use one, they're getting PAID for you. Make sure they work for it.

The Corona Meta: Two Jobs at the Same Time

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 08:54 PM PDT

This started off as a joke but the more I think about it, the more I think this can actually be pulled off. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for those in public accounting due to their insane workload but for industry accountants, this could actually be a thing.

What I'm proposing is applying for another accounting job at a different company, getting that job, and then setting up your work from home station to run two laptops and 4-5 monitors at the same time. This way you are continually logged on at both companies and can switch off doing your two roles. It's perfect nowadays because everyone is working from home and permanent remote work is becoming an actual thing so you would never really have to come into both of the physician locations you are employed at.

This also works for industry accountants because in my experience, a typical industry staff or senior accountant role is fairly straightforward for an intelligent individual and an 8 hour workday can easily be performed in 4 hours or less for a high performer. It also works because HR departments won't really check if you're employed somewhere else.

I know it sounds crazy at first but if properly pulled off, you can be making in the $200K range and still only netting around 50 hours a week.

    Thoughts?

How do y'all commit to a time schedule? I'm almost nocturnal right now

couldn’t hold back anymore and cried on my way home because i feel so useless as an audit associate (just wanna rant...)

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:09 AM PDT

I'm using a throwaway account. I am feeling so depressed and any kind advice would be appreciated...just got to get this off my chest. So a little background about me, I graduated uni with an accounting degree last year and soon after secured a job with a mid tier audit firm. Have been working there for around 10 months or so as a first year audit associate. Well it was the first interview I received and I just jumped at the opportunity. Many of my peers start off at big 4 firms and I only wish I could do so but I bombed my phone interview as it was so ridiculously hard... interviewer was asking me about audit fieldwork procedures when I barely even started my audit module in uni...received a rejection email in 30mins. How embarrassing. I would never have known how to answer these questions even though I did prepare. Anyway that's all in the past and I just pretended that didn't happen.

Today I guess I low key pissed off the partner as he called me into his office asking me why a page in the FS i printed out is different from his version. Anyway i gave him the wrong answer and he was furious. All i could say to him was i honestly don't remember what i have done. Then after thinking it through minutes later i realised what i did, which was actually not wrong but i should have kept him updated on the changes. Oh well, it was just me having another bad memory day to royally fuck things up.

Not to mention this whole workplace is seriously toxic. For the months up till covid was a thing, i was working 10-12 hours a day, no OT pay given of course. The client's office was a 1h+ bus ride away so pretty much came home at 11pm every day. I was not assigned a senior, but was working directly with a manager who assigns me to work on the subsidiaries myself. Of course I didn't know shit so I was basically just rolling over wp and doing up similar working styles to last year, only to find myself bombarded with comments that last year's methods of doing things ain't gonna work anymore because new partner taking on the engagement m decides he wants to do things his way, so more testing and details.

I was trying my best to do up these work papers and ask the manager anything i'm unsure of. I feel bad for bothering him because he is so busy with other clients as well. Although it is mostly done, I feel like don't know anything especially the hard bits and it makes me so depressed. I am a sham. It's been 10 months.

Also, i guess the manager keeps dumbing things down for me and was pretty much treated like an intern/paperwork person. i had to single handedly print out sets after sets of FS, bind them, prepare and print out letters, collect stacks of minutes, type them all out, and more admin matters. And that is for 15 subsidiaries.

I am also treated as invisible in the office. It's kinda weird. The partner/'managers pretty much ignores my existence. Manager will assign a task to my colleague, who would then tell me about it and get me to do it instead of telling me directly. It's weird. My team under the same partner consist of other people also occasionally help out with this engagement although they have since moved on from this one. I am still stuck at this same engagement clearing up the residuals ever since i joined this firm 10 months ago. They also often joke with each other which I can't even bear to join in since i am awkward and depressed.

I am losing my confidence as time goes by and partner flaring up today just made me feel so sad that I fought back tears in office. Everyone probably thinks i'm stupid. I don't even know why i can't even get a simple task right and i hate that i'm the designated paperwork admin person forever. Quitting isn't an option because there's a bond and i guess it would be hard to find a job during this pandemic...

Thanks for reading this long ass rant... just had to get things off my chest.

TLDR: guess i'm too useless for an audit associate to be assigned paperwork / sorting of GLs / admin printing stuff / clearing of comments when i hadn't got a clue what's going on in the first place / no directions, mentor (im assigned to a manager who is always busy) / bothering clients to clear those comments since i don't even know if that is something an auditor should know (i even straight up showed them the comment sometimes) / basically having no clue.

Just trying to see things positively even though things aren't looking so good.

Any hope for someone like me ..?

Final shot at in-school recruiting, please help me get it right

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 07:00 PM PDT

So this will be my last recruiting season as a student, and last year didn't result in any offers. I am determined to be better prepared this time around, but I feel a little lost on what I should be focusing on right now. I am attending full-time this Fall, and part-time Spring 2021. At graduation, I will have my 150 hours/required courses for my CPA.

I have the availability to do an internship this spring with such a light schedule. But since many internships can turn into a full-time offer, it feels odd to be applying for a spring internship and fall staff accountant roles at the same time. Can anyone fill me on the etiquette for this?

Or should I be focusing solely on full-time offers right now, and use the part-time semester to study for my CPA?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

ADHD Auditor working for Public firm - need HR advice?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 04:14 PM PDT

    Any advice?

I was diagnosed with ADHD recently and realized thats been the cause of my poor work performance over the last X amount of years.

I joined a mid-size Public Accounting firm last year and performed poorly in my 1st yr. Should i tell HR about ADHD or a Manager i work closely with? I hear revealing this condition may put a target on my back and backfire. Not sure if I should just shut up n cope, or say something to someone.

Will having passed all exams for the CPA be a guaranteed way to get a job?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I graduated school in May and got 150 credits in June, already purchased Becker. Unfortunately my FT offer was rescinded due to covid and was laid off, have been unemployed since May. I have been applying to 2-3 jobs per day for weeks and sent over 100 applications and haven't gotten a single interview. I'm thinking of just passing all the exams while I'm not working and doing a minor bookkeeping gig. My question is that once I get a few of them passed will I more likely be hired. Unfortunately it seems the window is closing for the summer tax season. I know you need 2 years experience to get a CPA, I have about a year due to two consecutive internships. Would passing all the exams be almost as surefire as having a CPA?

Any managers / team leaders out there?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 06:47 PM PDT

How much do you guys work? I have a team of 4 under me that do various amounts of work. Two of them have way more work to do than me - I'm merely responsible for the work they produce. So I review the financials they produce and advise them on any issues they have. I was brought in because the Vice President / cfo was way too busy to work on these.

It's just....I don't have that much to do when the team is working on their financials and budgets. I check in on them to make sure everything is on track, will meat deadlines, and review their work. I definitely provide value in that I catch a lot and improve the quality of the final product.

But I feel guilty for browsing the web while they work hard to meet a deadline. Idk, is there something else I should be doing as a manager?

Splitting workload with other 2 isn't an option, by the way, because they are too junior and have different roles.

Is it too late to be asking people out for virtual coffee chats?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 04:36 PM PDT

I'm going through recruit right now (Canada) and most applications will be due by the end of this month or early September. While I've been attending a lot of virtual networking events, I haven't asked out anyone for a private coffee chat.

Do you think it's too late at this point to send some emails for coffee chats?
